  • Dr. Barry Jones joins Kaitlyn to answer a question that we have probably all wondered at some point: Why do we fight God in our hearts? Dr. Jones gives us a theology of sin - where it started, how we encounter it, and what God has done to defeat it. Then he offers some practical help for addressing the sin we find in ourselves: practices of prayer and surrender that acknowledge our dependence upon God to save us from the power of sin.

This is a beautiful conversation. What a wonderful, life giving blessing! I love the idea of seeing sin as a breaking of shalom. I've been deep in my Bible, and this rings utterly true. God communicates His heart to us through His Word, and He wants us to seek Him. Breaking shalom by sin is the complete opposite of seeking Him. God loves us, and He wants us to love Him truly and to desire to be with Him.❤ Thank you!!

Your sinful nature is in your flesh, which you will leave behind when you move on from this life.
Working with other believers and God is the best way to overcome it here on earth.

How do you know what "sin" is if it isn't just breaking the list of rules?

    • @bkucenski
      @bkucenski 6 днів тому

Sin is when you're doing less than loving God or loving your neighbor. The OT law is not a rigid set of rules, they are merely 613 examples of being less than loving. And there are countless other examples throughout the OT and the NT.

    • @aosidh

@@bkucenski the examples are pretty confusing. What does circumcision have to do with loving god and your neighbor? What does stoning your neighbor to death for minor infractions have to do with loving god and your neighbor?

@@aosidh great points. Let's talk about that tomorrow.

@@bkucenski I'm not necessarily trying to give you a hard time! It's just that you brought up the mitzvot. Most Christians solve this problem by simply ignoring the bad commandments, without stopping to think about why there would be bad commandments in the first place 😹

@@aosidh I actually went through a Jewish resource for the 613 laws and went to the Bible and got all the original verses and removed their interpretations.
One of my projects is going law by law and writing commentary.
I highly recommend you do that yourself.
Circumcision, even in the OT talks about the circumcision of the heart, not just the flesh. The heart was always the point.

Epiphany … maybe 😂 As I was listening to the talk of in the beginning things being the way God intended, and then sin entering … It occurred to me that in a way, God did create us with capacity for sin. God gave us choice to choose to trust or not, as did for the angels as well, to image things of God or something us into the world. So I was just pondering this aspect which is new thinking for me, and interesting to consider. Perhaps its not that sin was this big bad thing that invaded the world, if the ability to choose always existed, then it was good to have choice, the risk of created beings choosing something other than God was good and worth it to God. I also wonder if sin has really increased over time, because if its just us missing the mark and mistrusting God, perhaps its just compounded with so many humans, so it seems like it increased but its more the number of people and the level of that sin in humans. Hmmm? Interesting new thoughts for me

There are not 10 commandments. There are not 613 commandments. There are two commandments: love God, love your neighbor. Everything else are non-exhaustive examples of how to do that.
That's why the "laws" are scattered throughout the entire Bible.
God didn't suddenly remember to tell people something 2000 years later.

Because the human heart is naturally wicked, per Jeremiah 17.
Because people who have been born again of a living hope, by the grace of God, are still living in their own mortal bodies (called “tents” in 2 Corinthians 5) until we die. Likewise, believers living a fallen world wrestle against the lusty temptation to sin (Ephesians 6:12) for the rest of their lives, but can take comfort in the fact that their Lord savior and king was tempted in every way, but was without sin (Hebrews 2:18, Hebrews 4:15).
Christians still sin, but their NATURE has changed; they don’t live in sin any longer

Why Does the American Version of God such a Big Jerk? Or should my focus be directed towards the New Hebrew God version or the Old Hebrew God version?
Since the Hebrew Torrah Bible was written by "Only Males" that made the decision of what was "Important" and what was NOT IMPORTANT. What human destination has this gotten mankind?
Uh Ah, that's what I thought...?
