It's also a good trick to make a stereo effect chain on a simple sound so you can hear what it does and use the chain whenever you need to place an instrument or vocal in a specific place , this saves a lot of time in mixing
That is one of the two reasons I ever actually save effect racks in Ableton! The other being when I create an effect chain that just captures the sound perfectly of specific producers' iconic instrument/bus-specific effects. Most notably I have one saved for Kaytranda (hats & bounce mid-bass), Tsuruda (grain delay racks for everything percussive), Dr. Derg (similar to tsuruda, but more SWANG & steeze vs Tsu's dirt nasty lane of things), & Sam Galantry (for improvising simple leads through & making them sound wild/helping me find inspiration). I also have this kinda thing for master chains, but I am not ready to put myself on blast like that talking about them lmao
I am VERY new to production, I understand the method and expected end result, but I don't get how the two are related. Could someone please explain it to me like I'm five?
a few other cool tips. if you’re using a mono sample library. open up two instances of the instrument, pan one left and one right. then, put the midi in the right channel two semitones up (or some other small amount), then pitch it back down 200 cents so it’s playing the original pitch. it makes it sound like it’s multitracked. then to make it even more realistic, you can slightly alter the start time by a few milliseconds and the velocity. if you take the differences far enough to where it’s noticeable, you can get this really cool classic rock guitar vibe out other instruments.
Really creative and innovative. Subscribed. Alternatively: add a few tricks randomization to two instances of the same MIDI performance pushed left and right, especially if they have fast envelopes.
You are the best teacher, sensei & mastermind!!!! Like you! The best presentation of the material, so that you understand everything, do not waste time and achieve results as soon as possible.
Dan Worral did a video on headphones not being in stereo, and then found that mid-side delay of only like 0.1 ms nets you incredible width, AND also depth, without the penalties of phasing.
@@queenpurple8433 except that you already know he has hundreds of videos about sound engineering that explain all the science behind his points. So you think physics is full of shit? KHS pitch shifter +12 and -12 semitones on L, -12 and +12 on R, adjust grain lengths to taste. Result: Wide broken up sound that is very useful for creative genres
Good stuff! One additional: free plugin called Wider sounds totally different from dimension expander, and also mono-compatible. One should have both, in addition to these tricks.
@@WatchMyShorts303 sometimes I want ”bad”, it’s not transparent to tonal stuff, sounds a bit chorusy, but transient are handled better than in dimension expander. So they’re good tools for different widening.
Had this video show up in my recommended, super helpful! My only critique is I wish you would have demonstrated the effect on the mono mix for more of the methods you showed. For example, the HAAS effect results in comb filtering when played back in mono, and mid/side EQing can result in level differences between the mono and stereo mix. Otherwise, great video!!
You are the best, and I mean it, you literally tell me tips that I never knew much info about, but not just that but you tell us multiple ways to do so if you're able to
There's that thing in FL studio called EQUO, spectrum is devided to 32 or so bands just like in eq with finite amount of bands (forgot actual name) and you can pan this bands however you like, that gives really wide sound with absolute mono compatability, so yeah, there's that.
Hey Aiden been listening to your album a lot and was just wondering what genres you’d classify crystal energy and waterfall as?! The album is fire much love as always ✨🤪
You missed mentioning contrast. Turning stereo sounds int mono or reducing the width will make the sounds you want to remain wide to sound wider just by contrast. that way you don't have to go as heavy on widening tricks which can also be destructive to the sounds. Making use of contrast alone does a whole lot for acheiving a wider and bigger sound. especialy when reducing the width on everything that doesn't need it and then widen the things you want extra wide. the width will reach quite extreme levels.
Thank you for this great video! your explanation is really good! By the way, what is the name of the first plugin Dimension Expander? which brand is it?
Play C and C # notes together (or any other with one semitone of the space) and add distortion. Pitching it up with the pitch bend will make it speed and slow down. Then add more effects to polish it
@@illford yeah thats true just if you listen to them youll notice its not the low end thats wide its divided into sections (low, Low mids, high mids and highs) they'll wide everything to correlation other then the lows
i feel like everything except vocals should be spaced out, i personally like it when vocals are as intimate and centered as possible. except you're doing something different than just a normal song.
You want real wide sound , record the same track twice with (live) automation and pan them L/R. Those tiny differences is what stereo is all about. The same sound with a stereo mic setup, think like that. Trickery works best as an effect! not the image of the instrument itself Ask yourself why a reverb sounds so wide. The problem of thickening sounds up with say chorus, is that the rest of the tracks will sound more flat in comparison and will also need that treatment. I would recommend f.e.; a separate chorus channel to group the effect if you really want to go the 'lazy' way. Make your own effects instead of relying on ancient tricks, so you can sound the same as the next guy/girl. .....It's way more fun. All these technicalities can also stand in the way of the production itself. The point is getting to a song and make it unique to you. You can't have something that is not there in the first place. Use that as a motto. Go Bruce Lee in your mind; Be the FX! LOL XD
