Hi everyone reading this! I have a QUESTION for you all! If you loved the original Kamigawa and you think this set is great, could you please elaborate as to why? Really excited to play with these new cards!
I’m glad you’re opening Draft boosters instead of Set boosters because it helps give us a better idea of what packs might look like while we’re playing limited. Thank you!!

Hey Gavin, I really enjoy those background stories and long opening videos, especially when it comes to the draft boxes and commander decks. :) I have one question regarding the full art lands: recently you mentioned that during Amonkhet players did not enjoy the experience of opening full art lands just in some packs and that you've learned from that. Therefore we had full art lands in every packs in THB, ZNR and the recent Innistrad sets. Why then did you go back to the split distribution? Actually, isn't the chance of getting full art lands is even lower given the dual lands in the basic land slot? Did you sleep on the things you've learned in Amonkhet? Nonetheless, the set looks great and I'm looking forward to prerelease in my LGS and wish you all the best from Germany!
Because the "Harmony" sub-mechanics (or whatever they call these) was made-up on the fly and was forced onto the set.. Since the beginning, they wanted to make a Japanese set (NOT Kamigawa) with a lot of Vehicles/Mechs. Halfway through development, they decided to make it Kamigawa.. adapting Enchantments to be the side that contrasts progress. As per the story, these creatures are blessed by a Kami (like an aura). Visually represented as if they are possessed by one (with the flying objects around them). The Kami aren't originally Enchantments (which might have been a good idea at the time). And not even Wizards would retcon that .. even if they changed the Orochi's look for no reason (and even created a story for it).
Hope reconfigure sticks around. Like the idea. Helps out those equipment decks for sure. Never a good time to have too many creatures or too many equipment. (Something you “don’t want to sleep on”)
I think it is nice that the introducing of the cards take a while so that the thinking where it could fit and where it sees play comes more in mind. I made the experience that the talk about it gets there a better idea for the cards then go over it at the preview site
With all due respect to them -- Do not worry ever about anyone who says these videos are too long. They can play them at a faster speed, or watch them in parts. There's no benefit at all to making these shorter. As may be obvious, I love them, keep it up, Gavin!
Yep! As WotC often acknowledge, not everything they make (e.g. VIP Boosters) is for every player - that includes this video. To have viewers engaged for 2+ hours is a statement to the quality of the content. Thanks Gavin!
This pace is great, IMO. Your excitement for the set is definitely making me more excited for it! And the slower pace gave me a chance to read the cards and see what's going on.
Love the video! There a a lot of pack opening videos on this platform, but none where a person with a deep inside on the development of the cards talks about them. It is very interesting! PS: I'm disappointed that I don't get a full art land in every pack -.-

Wow, the nostalgia is so real! I remember drafting Kamigawa with my friends at a 24h Burger King bc the LGS closed too early. This set has sparked so many forgotten memories that I actually teared up watching the video.

When I clicked on this video, I thought the time was 20 minutes. When you said this vid is already at 22 minutes I realized how long it was. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this or if you've answered this before but are you guys limited in design when it comes to making non-human humanoids? Is it for balancing purposes or more to do with the world or story being told? I'll elaborate more below... We returned to Kamigawa which I remembered had a unique humanoid race for each color (Kitsune, Moonfolk, Nezumi, Akki, and Orochi for white, blue, black, red, and green respectively), and yet for some of those races we ended up with more humans in that respective color than the unique race. For example, there we six cards throughout the set that either were or made a moonfolk in blue at the same time we got six blue humans. There were no other moonfolk (not counting Tamiyo). We also only got five Nezumi in black but six humans in black as well. Then when it came to multicolor legendaries we got seven unique humans but only one of the other five races got any love and that was the Nezumi with Greasefang. To make sure I wasn't wrong in my claim I went through every card revealed in the set just to make sure I had the necessary evidence and so people don't think I'm just pulling these stats out of my imagination I'm going to go ahead and put my findings here: [key: M = mythic, R = rare, U = uncommon, C = common] Kitsune: 9 white cards (2 R, 3 U, 4 C) Moonfolk: 6 blue cards (2 R, 1 U, 3 C) Nezumi: 5 black cards (1 M, 1 U, 3 C), 2 multicolor cards (1 R, 1 U) Akki: 7 red cards (3 R, 2 U, 2 C), 1 multicolor card (U) Orochi: 9 green cards (3 R, 2 U, 5 C) Humans: 7 white cards (3 U, 4 C), 6 blue cards (1 R, 3 U, 2 C), 6 black cards (2 R, 2 U, 2 C), 8 red cards (4 U, 4 C), 4 green cards (1 U, 3 C), and 9 multicolor cards (6 R, 3 U) [total of 40] This is the legendary spread as well: Kitsune: 1 White Moonfolk: 1 Blue Nezumi: 1 Black, 1 Multicolor Akki: 2 Red Orochi: 1 Green Human: 1 White, 1 Red, 7 Multicolor Could you tell that I'm a tribal player? It's not all that big of a deal but I am curious. I don't see why Satsuki couldn't have just been an Orochi or Naomi a Kitsune apart for their being lore for these characters already and it didn't feel right not to give them a card (I'm not too up to date on lore, though I did read the last 3 parts of the Kamigawa Neon Dynasty story just to see how Tamiyo was compleated).
so im confused - can u attack with transformed sagas right away or not - don't they have summoning sickness or something after entering the battlefield from exile?
Unless they have haste, which some do. Just making them flip would have probably been fine, but the rules quirks are then a problem because Sagas typically sacrifice themselves when the last counter goes on, so you have to make it a new object to remove the counter mechanic off it.
I mean the "samurai or warrior" thing is a step in the right direction, but I really think we need a creature type crunch. Soldier, knight, warrior, samurai. If anything, shouldn't samurai be parallel to knights? It's a lot of different types to express the same idea.
How is blending Samurai and Warriors "a step in the right direction"? Making NEW Samurai that makes the older ones better was the right way to go.. not a 3 color Mardu Legend that doesn't even assist Bushido. Maybe one that allows for all color of Samurai to be played in Commander (looking at Isao). Mixing them with Bant's Exalted and now another group that is HEAVILY supported dilutes Samurai even further.
The idea that blue is below green for treasure creation is surprising. It makes sense from a balance point of view, blue has card draw and is gated on mana (even if green gets to do both now) but green being better at artifact token generation than blue is a flavor miss for me.
so excited to get my products! We just revisited Kamigawa and I already want a 3rd visit! It's nice hearing your thoughts on each card, in terms of design, flavour and playability.
Was there ever any consideration of putting the phyrexian watermark on Tamiyo's Compleation? It's really a shame that the watermark was forgotten on Jin-Gitaxias, too
An oversight.. probably because they don't do Quality Assurance, testing and such as much as they should. You know.. the reason cards are banned before the set is even out.
Why would it be? It's the FIRST opening of the product (before anyone else even has access to it).. of course it's modified to make it look better than it is.
Loving the longer opening video styles, remember that on UA-cam folks can increase the play speed but there’s no function to add gems of design details the way that you can. Don’t sleep!
I loved this. You had 2 hours worth of things to say so a 2 hour video was totally appropriate. That said, I do have a critique. The explanation for not making Yamazakis with partners with is hard to understand when there is a card with partner being printed. It would be nice to get a more full explanation of what's happening here.
My only disappointments with the set were no reference or callback to Azami. A blue saga about Azami was warranted. She is a very popular commander and an admirable character. And the other concern is that the Commander product has entirely new Myojin instead of new cards for the originals.
I'd dare say that these Sagas that function as pointless references or fixed-reprints are a waste of design space.. Adding a card that actually told a story (a lore-rich card) of what Azami accomplished during/after the Kami War, wouldn't have been more interesting. Specially considering she was basically sacrificing students just to expand her knowledge with "forbidden" truths.. At least they gave such a treatment (story-wise) to Azusa
Great Video. I like the long Videos, with the explanations, designstories and so on. You are part of WotC and can tell stories other UA-camrs cant. If for someone they opening is too long, there are plenty others Videos and Content Creators, who just open the Box and look at the rares.
Ive noticed that we have black colored cards with the commander set symbol, however neither of the commander have black in them. Where will we be able to find these black commander cards if they arent in the commander decks?
"if it makes a good uncommon but a jank rare, make it an uncommon" is thoroughly awesome as a designer perspective.
Seems pretty obvious to me, glad it took 20 years! I think they need to get away from complex === rare
If only they applied that to their mythics as well.. or at all.

Love this set so much! Only missed thing I'd say was a call back to Sensei's Divining Top.

Then when it came to multicolor legendaries we got seven unique humans but only one of the other five races got any love and that was the Nezumi with Greasefang.
To make sure I wasn't wrong in my claim I went through every card revealed in the set just to make sure I had the necessary evidence and so people don't think I'm just pulling these stats out of my imagination I'm going to go ahead and put my findings here:
[key: M = mythic, R = rare, U = uncommon, C = common]
Kitsune: 9 white cards (2 R, 3 U, 4 C)
Moonfolk: 6 blue cards (2 R, 1 U, 3 C)
Nezumi: 5 black cards (1 M, 1 U, 3 C), 2 multicolor cards (1 R, 1 U)
Akki: 7 red cards (3 R, 2 U, 2 C), 1 multicolor card (U)
Orochi: 9 green cards (3 R, 2 U, 5 C)
Humans: 7 white cards (3 U, 4 C), 6 blue cards (1 R, 3 U, 2 C), 6 black cards (2 R, 2 U, 2 C), 8 red cards (4 U, 4 C), 4 green cards (1 U, 3 C), and 9 multicolor cards (6 R, 3 U) [total of 40]
This is the legendary spread as well:
Kitsune: 1 White
Moonfolk: 1 Blue
Nezumi: 1 Black, 1 Multicolor
Akki: 2 Red
Orochi: 1 Green
Human: 1 White, 1 Red, 7 Multicolor
Could you tell that I'm a tribal player? It's not all that big of a deal but I am curious. You have to wait 1 turn before attacking, yes.

Different plastic on the box? No Wizards Logo?
The idea that blue is below green for treasure creation is surprising. It makes sense from a balance point of view, blue has card draw and is gated on mana (even if green gets to do both now) but green being better at artifact token generation than blue is a flavor miss for me.
Started out with a land..... I knew this set would supply them.
Hello, Can you move less your hand while holding the cards ? It gives a trembling effect making it difficult to read the cards.
I am 58 minutes through the video and loving every minute of it! This gave so much good insight on the creative process of this set. Thank you Gavin!!
This was fantastic, Gavin. Absolutely loved hearing the long form narrative - your passion was apparent (and is definitely shared!)
so excited to get my products!
No wizards logo on the box wrapping? Is this actually a random box?
Why would it be?
It's the FIRST opening of the product (before anyone else even has access to it).. of course it's modified to make it look better than it is.
take the longer you want, the video was amazing :)
filigree familiar is probably kaladesh or aether revolt if I think about the aesthetic the art had
Where did you get that play mat it’s really nice
I normally hate 2-hr long videos... but for Kamigawa, I will make an exception.
Loving the longer opening video styles, remember that on UA-cam folks can increase the play speed but there’s no function to add gems of design details the way that you can. Don’t sleep!
omg awesome draft box! I had a chuckle each time you said 'Don't Sleep' on this haha.
Love the long vids, Gavin!
Don't sleep on the preview video Rebell Son did for 4:17 this card, it's a work of art
Do u get the box for as an employee, or with a discounted price, or was it provided by wizards for the video? Thanks for the video Gavin!
Loved this, and am so hype for the set! i won't sleep on this set for sure :P
Wow, I'm so Bloody hyped for this set. I didn't expect to see an opening this early. Thanks this is awesome, Take your time, I want to see every pull!
So we have a return to kamagowa, when are we going to get a return to Lorowyn? The new daybound/night bound seems perfect for a Lorowyn set.
The next time they have a fantastical (yet nameless) set requires something to make it stand out and sell more halfway through development .
Awesome! Thanks!
Love this set, thanks for the detailed presentation !
Don’t sleep haha. Also I love that you explained all the cards and the design behind them.
Hey Gavin I thought Kappas were extinct in Kamigawa. But we got a ninja turtle! What’s up with that??
"Because it was coooooool"
34:51 I hope that someday we make a secret lair of these using dual lands.....................from Ravnica... (Everyone sighs)
Please no gates
Set boosters exclusively.
