that detail about the kimono at 15:55 is the type of cultural blind spot that could so easily be overlooked without a consultant. I really appreciate Mendez Hodes' insights here.
I'm looking into the kimono detail as it seems similar to the Western convention that women's blouses have the buttons on the opposite side, for ease of a retainer helping to dress a lady. It would seem that reversing the kimono in a similar fashion would help the burakumin involved in the funerary rites, much like some of the ways morticians cheat the clothing onto the deceased in order to make them presentable for viewing. I'm also reminded of the Army tradition of never putting the US of a wool blanket on top, as it supposedly signified a bunk that was now vacant due to the previous soldier's death. I don't know the veracity of the tradition, but I know sergeants major would throw the biggest of fits over little details like that.

What for!? Kamigawa was originally made by people from the outside, bringing a distorted and interesting perspective to what Japanese culture really is. Now they went out of their way to ground it more into reality just to please foreign markets, and to revert that magic touch that created it in the first place? No wonder Neon Dynasty SUCKED as a Kamigawa set.
I really love this set and this setting. I really hope that in the future there would be another set like this to build upon what is already there. Plz make this possible MTG!
Cultural consultants are only necessary when dealing with marginalized minority groups… Scandinavians are basically just white people. They already know everything they need to know about white people. *sarcasm*
Please do this kind of video for each subsequent premier set, at least. I enjoyed hearing each panel members' experience, and particularly appreciated James Mendez Hodes's contributions to the discussion as a cultural consultant. I'm planning to recommend selections from this video as evidence of careful DEI work for future iterations of a Master's course I recently taught.
@@Commander_Skullblade It felt more like a 2 set block. Kamigawa should have that as well if theres any justice (and I didnt hate Innistrad btw) instead of moving to an entirely different plane.

There is an issue when a mechanic is tied to combat yet it doesn't help you do more damage to your opponent. Also how they would die to damage removal since part of their stats were locked behind creature combat. Mechanics that depend on your opponent usually just don't work.
@@faerie7dragon I disagree. Dies to removal is a weak excuse. Yes, they don’t directly help you deal more damage to the opponent, but they do allow your creatures to survive your opponents creatures in combat. Which in a way, does allow more damage potential via having multiple combat phases.

I genually enjoyed this round table and am impressed about the depths with which the cultural consultant has been implemented in the creation of this set.
After 8 years away this set is bringing me back to MTG. And to now know the amount of work and care and cultural sensitivity and knowledge that went into this set, not just by Mendez Hodes (who is amazing) but by WOTC for leveraging a culture consultant in this way as well as the rest of this team, makes me even more excited to rejoin the MTG community (and to get all the cards in this set).

As someone interested in Asian culture, I really appreciate how, at least in the conception of the set, you really sought to not take the easy way out but instead double down on representing the culture you're aiming to portray. This only makes me more excited to experience Neon Dynasty and relish in the artwork and the flavor of the set!
I'm so amazed with the depth that the cultural consultants are bringing to this set. I'm excited to discover more of this fresh yet traditional identity of Kamigawa!
I would've loved to hear more from Emily. She said like 10 sentences throughout the whole thing. I love the concept behind videos like this, but make sure everyone gets their turn with the talking stick, and that no one gets just put at the table for an attempt at "diversity". I'm sure she had many things to say, but none of the questions were offered to her. Magic is played by all kinds of people, so do better at showing us that it's made by all kinds, too.
In all likelihood this was a longer discussion cut down to a tighter 26 mins, but I agree it's unfortunate we didn't hear much from Emily. Honestly, I'd love a series of one on ones with somebody like Jimmy or Gavin Verhey just chatting for an hour with various leads such as her about each set!
They build sets to sell singles to Commander players. Tribal support won't sell powerful singles. If you ask me, the technology clashes with Magic's esthetic so hard, I'd buy a box just to burn it, if it didn't give Wizards my money in the process.
@@rosedoesntknow1853 I am pretty sure there are powerful singles and expensive ones for tribal -Morophon, Urza's incubator, herald's horn, coat of arms, door to nothingness to name a few. The reason why WotC do not do tribal decks anymore is because they are afraid that they will get out of hand like how they did with Edgar Markov and UrDragon deck back in the day when they were released in 2017.
It would be nice if they managed to make it cover classic era Kamigawa as well as Neon Dynasty. Neon Dynasty is great for bridging the gap to D20 Modern / D20 Future for telling Shadowrun / Blade Runner stories, but I don't know if I necessarily want my classic D&D characters roaming into those stories. Doesn't matter how Masterwork or magical your weapons and armor are when you're dealing with lasers and monofilament blades.
And I wanted to come back to my comment, now that I've watched the video, because it got me thinking that if we do get a Kamigawa D&D book, then it'll essentially replace the less than ideal Oriental Adventures material that certainly didn't seem to have a cultural consultant involved. On that note, it will help update the loosely Asian themed continent of Sarlona in Eberron, which is under the thumb of the Inspired and their Quori masters.
i really wish they gave more time to the rest of the table to speak, as much as we appreciate Mendez's contributions it felt like most of the discussion was focused on what he had to say. Which is great for a one-on-one format interview, but kinda disappointing in a roundtable discussion.
The aesthetics and art of this set are absolutely beautiful! I just hope there's a neat game-mechanical representation of the cyberpunk future tech in addition to the ninjutsu representing traditional Japanese warfare.
I’m just happy they finally corrected the placement of the Soratami long ears which should be on the side of the head based on Ittoku’s original concept arts and not on the forehead, which makes absolutely no sense. This always irked me. Now if they will only update Tamiyo…
Am I the only one wary of all these changes and art directions? We now have Orochi without feet, samurai without bushido, Kitsune with elongated faces, robotic rats driving motorcycles, DJs, good Ogres, spirits that dont look like spirits, Kappas (even though they are suppose to be extinct) etc. I am a huge Kamigawa fan but this so far doesnt feel like my Kamigawa.
This community is so amazing I love magic the gathering I grew up playing tabletop magic with family. Something I look forward to is seeing more wonderful ideas. And Avacyn Angel of Hope. I look forward to the day when I see Avacyn on MTG Arena. *If she already is I'm a fool and can't find her lol.
Many of my friends said that giving a future aesthetic was gonna kill it by needing to include firearms but this just proves my point that just because technology progresses doesn't mean all tech progresses. Like in the art provided I have not seen a single gun at all. So it's still swords and sorcery and fantasy and no guns.
I think it's also a bit narrow-minded to assume that guns, drones, etc. are the inevitable destination for weapon technology. A tech-enhanced sword could destroy a standard firearm, with the right tech.
I really wonder what kind of mechanic/s the Samurai will get to employ. I like something defensive kind of like pay X to gain 1st strike, if a blocked creature is killed by the first strike, this creature can block another creature.
Extremely happy to see how amazing this set is being handled. I hope we continue to get videos like this and see this level of detail in every set. Thank you MTG!
