You need to use a pound coin to get that smooth British sound
😆 (Rule Britannia starts playing)
We dont even have those pound coins anymore!
Or just use a smooth metal disc
Yes that's true
I searched through my mums coin collection just to find an old pound coin
I remember seeing Adrian Belew using this technique with Talking Heads back in the day! Love it!
Wow, I didn’t know that! I was guessing someone may have tried it before. He’s like the original guitar trickster. The Born Under Punches solo and Jonny’s go to sleep glitch is another connection between them!
That’s exactly right!! Brian Eno on production- love what he did with that album. The glitchy guitar part in that track is amazing!
@@junokarah3495 me too! Love eno
That makes sense since the Radiohead guys are a big King Crimson fans
The magician's alliance won't be happy about this one
We demand to be taken seriously!
Love the amnesiac sticker!
Could you cover his technique in nude where he kinda strums the muted strings before playing a note?
Good idea! It’s a tricky little technique!
I see this technique for the first time on The House of Cards from the basement video, and I shocked! Because when had been listening to the album, I thought that sound was a marneot with lots of fx...
A trick from Dave Gilmour, with the best example Echoes (live at Pompei). Gilmour used a heavy weight style slide with no opening for a finger.
I love Echoes at Pompei! Don’t think I ever noticed that, I remember the “seagull wah trick” though (found that one myself by accident plugging a Cry Baby in wrong in my early days 😆)
Great title. If anything combines 2 things I love I’m in. Johnny and Arrested Development reference, I’m interested.
Love this sound ! With the use of a volume pedal you can also cut out the scratchy sounds when moving between notes and then use delay to fill in the empty spaces . Super excited for the video!
radiohead and arrested development together is not something i thought id see
These are the important things
Your tele is beatiful Joe
Wonderful. Thanks for unlocking. Suggestion for another vid. EOB’s part in Ful Stop.
Nice reference in the title! lol
Please do bring more of this. I'm definitely adding this to my arsenal, as soon as I check if I can really pull it out, lol
Very cool! More short vids like this please!
That's so good. I really love your channel and wait for every video!
Cool. More of this kind of videos please!!
Excellent use of the force, Joe!
this is awesome thanks!
I love the Arrested Development reference!
Look at banner Michael!
@@JoeEdelmann3 Illusions, Dad. You don’t have time for my *illusions*.
This is awesome stuff! Will try it when I cover High and dry! Thanks mate!
Perfect timing, I was just trying to figure out how to do this yesterday, so thanks a bunch. Love the arrested development reference too btw
Sounds so pretty, really spacey.
upvote for Arrested Development.
Yes finally!! I know what pedal i’m gonna buy when I get my salary. Godd bless you Joe
Great, I'll try it right now loooool thxs for UR lesson
there was a typo. auto-correction has been activated loooool
cant wait!
in the song generates a sound of peace, hopefully you can play the other version of "videotape" from the 2006 bonnaroo concert 👍
This is great, i’ve recently started to use a screwdriver to make some different sounds like this, as godspeed you! black emperor used on their 2nd lp, guess now i’ll have another weird way to play the guitar now
i was wondering what he did in high and dry
least obsessed radiohead listener.
Arrested development AND Radiohead !?
We now need a video about how he uses an actual bow...
where did u get ur sticker !!
EBay! I think 😂
Fantastic technique for getting some really unique sounds, once you get the right tone/effect settings you can get a lot of mileage out of this... And you demonstrated it really well! What's next on the list?
I’m working on another Bends-era tune with Taka at the moment, and thinking of some other tutorials and demos!
JOE U ARE A GOD
Lace sensor pickup
😎👍
Would love to hear where it is in high and dry. 🤔
In the very beginning for example! That little soft three note line before the vocals come in.
adrian utley of portishead does this same thing with a screw driver
Really??? Which song?? Never noticed.
Que genial!!! Por fin podré realizar ambientes tipo ballenas :3 gracias!!!!!!
this is the only one i could never really nail / FINALLY
Joe looking like Alex Turner
I just wanted to be one of the Strokes...
Can i use on accoustic?
no entiendo nada porque no hablo ingles, pero me interesa
In the 90s people used to say that he used a 9v battery or a vibrator.
Haha, hadn’t heard that one! I know he used a finger massager for the start of Anyone Can Play Guitar?
Pretty sure Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction used a vibrator on Mountain Song.
@@antonio_sousa28 now that makes more apparent sense 😂
@@JoeEdelmann3 yeah, it fits the scheme. Reeves Gabrels used one in Tin Machine too, in the early 90s.
hey, where is the link to see you´r friend Cody in action?
Does this and/or using a coin as a pick damage the strings in anyway
Not really! The serrations aren’t that sharp, just enough to grip the string.
what's the name of these picks?
Well, any old coin with a serrated edge will work! I used a US quarter here!
would be cool if you show how jonny do the noises from "sing us a song" in exit music part
It’s a good question - somewhat similar technique but he mainly scrapes the coin on the low E string above the frets, also quickly sliding it up and down in addition to back and forth! My friend Cory did a good take on it in our OK Computer cover - you can find that on Burne Holiday’s channel!
@@JoeEdelmann3 i checked it out, really cool techquine, and also such beautiful cover
Can you show us how he used it on Exit Music? I'd love to be able to genuinely cover that.
Check 2:48 of this one! ua-cam.com/video/16izdtkzEz8/v-deo.html he scratches more wildly above the frets and across strings
👍

"Use the force to find the notes", lol! You're too modest to call it what it is, i.e. talent.
Hi Joe, love your videos. I'm curious, does Jonny use this technique in Present Tense and Separator as well? I hear something like this in the live version of Present Tense in Lollapalooza Chicago.
I believe those two examples are your garden variety tremolo picking (with a similarly smeary reverb on top) rather than the coin, given how quickly and fluidly he moves between notes on those!
@@JoeEdelmann3 Ah! Thanks Joe. Nice to finally know what it's called and how he does it!
Jonny used this technique since the the early 2000’s, since they toured Kid A and Amnesiac
What's the name of the song?
Radiohead - House of Cards!
I love house of cards
Can you tell us list of Jonny's pedalboard? or at least Ed's. Tnx Joe!
Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/kTUgjC-1rfs/v-deo.html and thekingofgear.com !
Who’s the thumbs down voter ?? ....... Johnny Greenwood don’t like secret giveaways 👎😂👌👌
She turns illusions for money...tricks
I used this technique in this song: ua-cam.com/video/8cH4PtaElFo/v-deo.html
Nice!
Shit it's already been invented 😔
Now go smoke a joint and do this in your room for the next 6 hours.
I’ve never noticed this on House of Cards as I continue to skip it religiously.
its my favourite on the album 😭
