    I cannot put enough emphasis on how grateful I am of your work. I discovered Radiohead about 3-4 years ago and I had reached a point where I found it hard to get inspired with new content. That emptiness is now filled thanks to you! You are a brilliant musician, and quite an inspiring guy! Thanks for all!

    Wow. Great walk-thru, Joe! You articulated the concepts behind the techniques so perfectly. Really enjoying all the content you've been putting out-keep it up!! Trickster was my fav thus far but I just heard your song, Marionette, and it's awesome! Cool to hear the RH influence "creep"-ing its way into your original stuff now. Jeez man, thanks for taking the time to show exactly how to play these Radiohead tunes. Its tricky for someone like me to figure this stuff out, even WITH tabs. You get the tone and playing spot on. And btw, your covers with taka are the closest covers to Radiohead that Ive ever heard. Ive had the pleasure to travel and see Radiohead live a ridiculous amount of times. An amazing live band and your covers are bang on. 🙏☘️☘️☘️

    Nice vid. If I had to choose 1 pedal it would be delay. With a good delay you can make harmonies, chorus, phase, reverb & if you use enough, background synth sounds. There was a period of time I didn't have a drum set or drummer & I would use delay from earlier parts of the song to create fills later in the song.
    If I keep watching these I'm going to end up getting back into it. While I wouldn't consider it a bad use of time, I don't really have that time.
    So far every vid I've watched from this channel has great information. It's not mucked up with technical jargon, it doesn't build up some small technique as the end all of play style, it's not flashy or click baitey & the creator is pleasantly average (no offense, your cool but not intimidating). You get just enough of a technique to expand on but not so much info that it's overwhelming. These vids remind me of a casual sit down with a fellow musician. I was lucky to work at an instrument repair shop, my tips were rarely money but often technique. These vids are going to make me buy a guitar again and lose sleep.

    Hi @JoeHedelmann thank you for all the informative videos you make about my also favorite band. For once i noticed a mistake in one of your videos. A dotted 1/8 note = 3 x 1/16 note or a 1/8 note and a half, not a 1/4 note and a half. I only specify this to help readers of the comments of this video understand exactly what they’re doing if they choose to apply your advices. Again thank you very much for the generosity and accuracy of your videos that i really appreciate.

    Hey man, you are so awesome and your videos are so well done. Just one huge request. try and ask how many of those disclaimers at the beginning are necessary or are anything anyone would actually care about. it is a little like purgatory when you are wanting to just get to the technical explanation of the concepts you are curious about and there is about 4 minutes of disclaimer before you get to the only thing you actually care about.

    Hey! Huge Radiohead fan here and loving these videos about how they get their awesome sound. I had a question about the Present Tense section: how are you palm muting the strings when playing that arpeggio? I've been trying it out but it feels weirdly unnatural. Thanks and awesome vid!

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 роки тому +2

      Hey! Thanks!! It’s less of a true palm mute and more just tapping the strings with your palms right before you finger pluck each string. So down motion palm taps strings, up motion thumb or finger plucks the right string. It is a little hard to describe or get down, but you’ll get a feel for it!

  • @Eurobailey80
    @Eurobailey80 Рік тому +5

    Thanks for the video and the detail! I am a little confused around setting the dotted eights for identikit. If I have tap tempo on my pedal - do I just tap in the bpm of the song and then use the subdivision on the pedal (which has dotted eights?) . When I do this the tempo seems too quick?

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  Рік тому +4

      That is another way to do it! You just have to be wary of what you’re counting/tapping as quarter notes (the bpm). The song has a double time feel so the “quarter notes” should be somewhere ~150bpm or so I think!

    • @Eurobailey80
      @Eurobailey80 Рік тому +4

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  2 роки тому +4

    • @sofraYT
      @sofraYT 2 роки тому +4

      @@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks. I have the pedal and I’m slowly understanding more and more (first pedal ever bought).
      I’m practicing Thin Thing by The Smile which, I believe, is in 6/8 (at least Jonny’s guitar) with bpm 95. It is kind of hard to match exactly, and you have to find the exact settings.
      Therefore I asked.

    You should look into the software Max/MSP, Joel. Im pretty sure thats how jonny made the stutter delay for the solo in go to sleep.

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  3 роки тому +3

      Indeed it is! TKoG’s pedal among other things is meant to emulate what his Max MSP patch is doing (recording a variable length buffer and playing it back at random intervals). I’ve done a similar patch using Pure Data (the open source version of Max MSP style object programming made by the same creator). Tons of fun!

    Do you think the spring reverb on my amp could sub for Jonny's sound or would a digital reverb pedal be better? Thanks

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 роки тому +2

      glennc100 depends on what you’re aiming to do with it! You can definitely get some good ambience for Jonny’s tremolo picking, coin sliding , etc out of a classic amp spring. After all, the reverb side of Jonny’s Space Echo delay pedal (and of the original tape units) is a spring-style, and he uses that sound element from time to time. On songs like Decks Dark, however, the benefit of having a dedicated pedal (modeling a spring or other types of reverb) is that he can aggressively stomp it in and out for bursts of reverb, which you could only get in a spring loaded amp by kicking or shaking it (which I don’t recommend unless you’re Lee Perry 😝)

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  3 роки тому +6

      That it is! Yeah, a little tricky at first but it starts to get a little easier with practice. You could count it like drummers do with a “1 e & a 2 e” and tap on the 1 and the second e, that helps flow a little faster!

    Thank you for this.
    Question: Di you think the ehx canyon pedal would kill a couple of birds with one stone for Radiohead effects in general? It’s got pitch stuff and modulation

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 роки тому +5

      The Canyon is a very cool pedal! I think it's definitely versatile, and no doubt you could conjure some Radiohead-esque atmospherics with it, but in my mind (without much experience with it) its still very much a delay in terms of function, rather than a multi-fx. I think for pitch effects you'd still want something more Whammy-like, and for modulation a Small Stone or some type of tremolo. But as always, depends on your budget and your needs/tastes.

    Hi ! I've been trying for a long time now to achieve the delay setting for Present tense. I own a srtymon Timeline. trying to tap as you do but not working well and not very comfortable with the 5/16th either. would it be possible to put it in a Delay sec to add / I suppose quarter note with no feedback / the other settings being "standard"? thanks!

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  22 дні тому +1

      At 92 bpm, 5/16th is around 815.2 milliseconds, so maybe you could try using a 815ms delay?

    Pardon my ignorance Joe, but what's your logic in your 4 count before tapping out the delay? Is it just to get your initial tempo?

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  3 роки тому +4

      Yep, just sort of gearing up for the tempo and what the subdivision should feel like! It can be helpful if you’re playing with a band and want to lock in to them first before putting a syncopated rhythm in. But it’s not totally necessary! ☺️

    I'm considering a RE20 because from what i heard online its awesome...
    But I'm wondsring how it compares to other delays such as EQD Disaster transport or boss dd500 / Re500 or something else that can get that tone and more.
    One thing that scares me is the RE20 converts everything including the dry signal to a digital signal. Thoughts?

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  3 роки тому +4

      Levi Jesse the RE20 is very awesome and has a very specific vibe but a lot of cool features. EQD is also badass and the Disaster Transport sounds great, it’s a bit more of a “bucket brigade/Memory Man” type voicing and although it’s true bypass the effect itself is digital signal processing also. The DD500 like you said is a swiss army delay that will get you a lot of styles if you’re looking for more than just a great tape echo simulation.
      In short, can’t go wrong with any of the three! But if you’re looking for a tape style specifically, I think the RE20 has the special edge there.

      dont understand why people think digital is bad. technology has moved on and you can't tell the difference between digital and analog now
