This is aimed directly at God, in the style of a lament, like many of the psalms. Tyler is expressing some of his doubts about God using Old Testament references, challenging God to strike him down for it. This is the 'implicit demand for proof' - if God did strike him down, it would be enough proof for Tyler that he exists. I agree that he probably was in a dark place when he wrote this. Maybe he wanted God to end his life so he wouldn't have to. Maybe he thought he deserved nothing else. Either way, God didn't respond in the way he asked, so I guess it ultimately shows that belief is a lot harder and requires actual faith. It also shows that God is big enough to handle our questions and doubts. Just my take on it...
Praise God that's amazing! It's awesome to see how God uses peoples gifts and testimonies to reach others. Thank you for your continued support and God Bless!
“Set fire and destroy” into “make me look away” I think is reference to sodom and gamora where God make them look away from what he was destroying. And the title implicit demand for proof means he’s asking God for proof that he exists
By the looks of it, most of the other comments explained the song a bit. In regards to that, I just wanted to point out one of my favorite lines, "Strike me down I am calling your lightning." As most have pointed out, Tyler is demanding it as a means to get proof that God exists (hence the title "Implicit Demand for Proof"), because if he gets struck down then that will be proof enough. But I especially also love that one line because the way he says it is "I am calling your light-ning" which makes it sound like he's also saying "I am calling your lie." This makes sense given that a lot of his songs/lyrics back then dealt a lot with questioning God and his beliefs, hence why there are lines like "Why would you let us use your name?." It isn't much, but I've always loved that one line since the tile is an "Implicit Demand" and he'd hide a line like that in the song.
Another amazing song. The man is truly blessed with his abilities to write meaningful music. I appreciate those who take the time to listen to and share their music, so thank you. 💛||-//
Glad you checked this one out! I think Tyler is at his most vulnerable here. I think he's basically begging God to give him a sign (demanding implicit proof), even if it means destroying him (rain down and destroy me). He just wants to know God is really there. He's in such a bad place and doesn't understand why God would allow him to be there (I am very perplexed by your ways). When he says "why won't you let us use your name" I think he's talking about using God's name in vain in frustration. He want to scream out angrily, but he knows he cannot. Just my two cents! This is the first track on the self-titled top album, btw.
This is the very first song on twenty one pilots first album I think this song is pretty universally agreed to be about his faith and wanting proof God exists - even if it means striking him with lightning he would at least know for sure God is real - also the lyric video was a bit off as the one line that confused you was backwards on the lyric video - it's really "why would you let us use your name?" - he's talking about using God's name in vein Hope that helps!
The song is called implicit demand for proof. This song is about Tyler's doubt of God, and demanding a sign. I don't think rain down destroy me refers to his mental state. Revelation 6: 15-17 says, "and the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens, and in the rock of the mountains; and they said to the mountain and rocks, "fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of wrath is come, and who can stand?" It gives the theme of the story. It takes place during the time of God's wrath on the world, and he's asking the rocks to fall on him because it would be much better to die than suffer the wrath of God. It's called implicit demand for proof because he's having problems believing in the goodness of God when the world has gone through so much destruction due to tje 4 horsemen, and the antichrist. He's asking himself where God is in this time that looks like the world could end at any moment, and that would be better than what he's going through in the story.
I know I’m late to your channel but interesting note about the lyrics. I’m pretty sure the lyrics on Apple Music are Tyler’s lyrics and are correct (several clues I won’t get into here). On Apple Music it says “Reign down and destroy me.” I think the alternate spelling of reign adds a significant layer to this song. Also on AM it doesn’t say “why won’t you let us use your name,” it says, “Why would you let us use your name.” That makes more sense to me, like we’re looking around at Christians who are giving God a bad name and asking why He allows it.
Your eye is improving, yay 😃! About that line that confused you> i think the lyric was written wrong. I think it's ""why would you let us use your name"" (as in vain)...
As for "why won't you let us use your name", Tyler's in the city of Dema run by demons called bishops that rule using a false religion called vialism. People who believe in vialism believe that you need to destroy/kill yourself to be happy. This religion powers the city, and the bishops. The bishops probably teach God doesn't want them to use the name of Jesus because Jesus would save them from vialism, and the bishops, and the bishops would lose their power over the people in Dema. Vialism is probably why he asked God to rain down, and destroy him, but I'm not entirely sure.

Announcement just came out that NF is going to be a father!! I suggest a celebratory congrats reaction or some other video idea?
I'm definitely going to do an NF reaction soon. Such a blessing to hear that news! God Bless!
When he says, “why won’t you let us use you name” Isn’t there a verse in the Bible saying we can name our child after the messiah?
I’m pretty sure it’s “why WOULD you let us use your name” I think this lyric video was wrong about that one lol...
Thank you for the heads up and all the recommendations. God Bless!

It's why *would* you let us use your name. Basically, I'm saying why would you even give us the opportunity to disrespect you
