This performance demonstrates how masterful of a guitar player he truly was. This is why he could entertain thousands with just his voice and guitar. Being a guitar player myself I can tell you his accuracy and skill on guitar was top level and combine that with his singing and writing skills, we'll never see another like him. A legend.
Saw him at Madison Square Garden at the peak of his career, in the round circa 1976. I had front-row seats. The place was packed to the gills with > 20K fans. Amazing show. I had awesome photos taken with my Canon fTB SLR. Pictures were stolen by a so-called "friend," but at least I have the memories. RIP JD.
I saw him live once in the mid-70s. It was John, a 6-string, and a 12-string. That’s it. He was only accompanied once. That was during The Eagle and the Hawk when the three giant screens behind him featured video clips of eagles and hawks in their native environment. Throughout, John was the only human and the only musician. When I saw and heard all the beauty he could produce from a 12-string acoustic guitar, I was so inspired that I taught myself how to play guitar - on a 12-string. I could never call myself a guitarist, but I was a professional singer, and I could play well enough to accompany myself on stage. I have been a loyal John Denver fan since the early 70s, and still am to this day. I can’t wait to see what kind of music we make as a duet act in Heaven.
I saw your comment and i have to agree!! Completely and wholeheartedly. Though I’m older now and not like i was. Ive been told by people who have listened to me play and sing over the years that they thought they were listening to Johns recordings. Theres no greater compliment and I appreciate there words BUT... I know John was, is and forever will be THE MASTER!!!!
John is a superb fingerstyle guitarist... as a fingerstyle player myself I can tell you he has superb tone and precision and flow.. I can't come close. No need to comment on his voice Absolutely beautiful. Perfect lyrics.
Sharon here: His guitar was his solace, his companion, his expression. He sometimes played with a full orchestra behind him, but it always boiled down to John and his guitar. It was really all he needed.
John Denver was one of the few musicians that performed his live music as good or better than the recorded version. I saw one of his concerts back in the 70's and was blown away by the perfection of his vocals and guitar playing as well as the band that accompanied him. I did not hear a single note that was sharp or flat. To this day I have never seen another performer that could match his performances.
Really love John Denver so much, when i hear his music feel so peace, and i love how his picking the guitar, really beautiful❤ i wish i can play guitar like him too. Rest in peace Denver🕊️

Was just him, all alone, not a single other person with him, no opening act, nothing Just him and us. He performed for 2-1/2 hours, and it was fantastic. It really takes a special gift to be able to connect with an audience like that. He had a way of making you feel like the whole thing was just between you and him.
Sitting next to a campfire listening to him, makes me smile and remember the voice of a poet. He was a blessing and he left us way to soon. So if your feeling sad, just play a song by John and you will fine a smile coming on your face.thank you Mr. Denver .
My grandma passed away 3 years ago yesterday. John was her favorite artist of all time. I hope she's up in heaven attending a concert of his right now ❤
Saw him many times over the years, such a loss. Always enjoyed Darcy Farrow......and recently my wife and I retired to a small farming town on the Walker River - Yerington!
What a beautiful song. It's one of my favorite John Denver songs of all time. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert several times and he put on a fantastic show and he seemed like a genuinely nice man. May he Rest In Peace.

Said it before, will say it again, this live version became my favorite version by him, eclipsing his studio verion. Then again he was an artist that got better as he got older and his songs grew with him.
John was in the best voice ever then imho , so glad I saw him then during the Wildlife Concert in '95 befote his tragic passing 😢 My first Denver concert was back in 1974 ❤
First heard Darcy Farrow in my car, driving through picturesque Truckee, north of Lake Tahoe - where this ballad was set. Maybe because of where I was, I still remember. It was a brisk twilight, and snow flurries just began. Many years ago, John kept me company as I drove. Anyway, his mesmerizing lyrics and melody brought me to another time, not far from where snow was currently being pushed off my windshield. Toward the song's end, I was shocked to hear of Darcy's fate. I got off the road in a stream of tears, fumbling around for a tissue. However, the only cloth available was my coat sleave. Such is the realness of John's songs. RIP, I miss you.
I would say top 3. John was an amazing singer and songwriter, but a list of great guitarist (acoustic or electric) I think would have Lindsey Buckingham ahead of John Denver.
His music and voice had a sound that has not and never will be matched. This song is my favorite. I loved them all though. This world is a poorer place without him. I felt his leaving this world very hard. No one knows this but you do now.
Just a man with a voice, song and guitar. Simplicity and perfection not seen often. He inspired me to become a songwriter and I have learned so much from him and after 30 finally wrote a nature song I think he would like.
The more often that I listen, the more I miss John, his voice, his guitar his music. The first time that I heard him sing Darcy Farrow got me hooked on his songs, music and voice.
Such a beautiful, beautiful song. Oh how I miss John Denver. I was first introduced to his wonderful music by a dear colleague when I was still in my teens and I have loved his music ever since. My one regret is that I did not ever get to see and hear him in concert when he was in the UK. All my love to John's family and to John. x

Had a blast with a whole bunch of strangers as we shared those binoculars. Boy did they ever get passed around. I miss days like that so much.

I love playing this.... Capo-3... Key of 'D'... seems to suit so many 'voices'..... So often we 'have' to follow the 'key' of the other Musicians... or visa-versa!!! xoxoxox
Such an underrated player, to play chords he plays while finger picking and singing songs as diverse as he did is so difficult and he just made it look effortless
Underrated? Hardly. His voice was so great that two of the members of the Chad Mitchell Trio invited him to join them... in the mid-sixties. BTW.... How's life in Northern Ireland?

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It’s a beautiful and sad story and John does a wonderful job with it. I know many songs have a story behind them and I would love to know the story behind this song.
Innocent and beautiful Irish folk style and a very underestimated musical talent. Too pure and innocent for this current world I’m afraid……….I have Loved this all my life. Thank you John Denver
This song is special to me because I live in Reno, Nevada. The Truckee River is very popular here and we get our water from the Truckee River. Yerington town in the song is Yerington the town about 1 hour from Reno. Virginia City is about 15 minutes away from Reno. Carson Valley Plain is a half an hour south of Reno. I've always liked this song. I like all of John Denver's songs. Rocky Mountain High is my favorite song of John Denver's.
One of the greatest folk singers of all time...i felt so touched/ emotional when i heard that he crashed his plane & died, that day i had bought one of his C D's i was almost in tears ,i tried to play guitar because of his songs ...His songs are so nice , the melody, the instruments that they use, & the way he plays his guitar...i will never, never forget him, that distinctive voice so talented, how i wish to be like him , thank you John for your beautiful music, forever ur a legend...😘
When I want to be alone and just day dream I put John's Darcy on and set it on repeat....I can't help having a tear or two. I live very close to the Carson Valley...so beautiful as is this masterpiece. Thanks John RIP
My dad lived in Gardnerville, Nevada. Close to the Walker River. Every time we drove there from LA we had Johns songs on. This one especially. Through the June Lake area we played Rocky Mountain High….
I weep when I hear his beautiful soothing voice. I have no fear of dieing...how could I? John paved the way...I'll follow his lead...for it will be heaven indeed❣️ 💖🌈
🔵 although John Denver was most famous for his exceptionally beautiful vocals and song writing ability & beautiful melodies , and not so much for his guitar talent ; many of his tunes are quite difficult to replicate on the guitar , including this one ; literally took me two years and about a couple hundred listens to learn to play guitar for this beautiful folk song just as John plays it here ; JD is my first and top most Loved Inspiration for acoustic guitar songs ❣️❣️ 💙
I sit here with the tears running my mother favourite singer we saw John in the March that awful year when he left us in the October mum has advanced vascular dementia I play John's music to her every day this song proves John was a musical genius and to steel a saying from another master of music Waylon "sad songs and waltzes"
Yes, those of us who saw him in concert were lucky. We took away a tiny sliver of him that we can call ours. Doesnt it feel that way? And does it still make you cry to listen to his exquisite voice, as we know, that he is no longer here?? All these people who die in plane or helicopter crashes. Stop this, stay on the ground, will ya?!
Where the walker runs down to the Carson Valley Plain There lived a maiden, Darcy Farrow was her name The daughter of old Dundee and a fair one was she The sweetest flower that bloomed o'er the range Her voice was as sweet as the sugar candy Her touch was as soft as a bed of goose down Her eyes shone bright like the pretty lights That shone in the night out of Yerrington town She was courted by Young Vandamere A fine lad was he as I am to hear He gave her silver rings and lacy things And she promised to wed before the snows came that year But her pony did stumble and she did fall Her dyin' touched the hearts of us one and all Young Vandy in his pain put a bullet through his brain And we buried them together as the snows began to fall They sing of Darcy Farrow where the Truckee runs through They sing of her beauty in Virginia City too At dusky sundown to her name they drink a round And to young Vandy whose love was true
Another great singer taken from us too soon. I’ve read the FAA plane crash report that took John Denver’s life. Won’t post any details about it, suffice it to say that it was traumatic. I learned to play guitar by listening to his music, and ultimately learned to fly in part so I could understand what inspired John Denver.
The fuel switch was hard to get to. Low on fuel. He had asked the pump attendant to take a ride w him but attendant was on duty so wasnt allowed. John told him he didnt need gas as he'd only be less than an hour.
Simply amazing. I didn't know John Denver. I had heard the songs "Sunshine On My Shoulders and Don't Close Your Eyes Tonight" in the eighties of the last century, but I didn't know who it was. I recently discovered his other songs and I am delighted with such perfection. The intros are perfect and I don't even know much about music. The combination of his voice with acoustic guitar, piano and electric guitar is excellent. The media highlighted other singers from the 60s, 70s and 80s, but for me John Denver is better than all of them. I'm Brazilian and I recently learned to like American Country music. His charisma and simplicity conquer the audience in every clip I see. I saved about eighty of his songs from UA-cam, made a playlist and listen to it every day. He had the gift of God. Unfortunately, he died in 1997, still young, but his voice and songs will always be remembered. Today there is so much musical crap in Brazil and in the world that it makes you want to cry, but when you listen to John's songs, you don't want to stop listening. Listening to such beautiful works accompanied by passion and kissing a lot is priceless. One day we will meet John in eternity with God and we will be part of a perfect choir forever.
I am not an American and English is not my mother tongue. But ... John Denver is like a person I know personally for many years. Never met him, never been to his concerts but fell in love with his music since I was 13 ... that was in 1975. In 1986, I was lucky to attend college in the US but still not fortunate enough to attend his concerts then. Pocket wasn't deep enough. 😆🐱

Completely agree ...I also am a guitarist . Contrary to popular belief he was an awesome composer ...I miss him.
Exactly!
I've said for years that his finger picking is criminally underrated.
This is flawless fingerpicking...something I study. A highly skilled guitarist for sure... that's exactly why he makes it look easy. Beautiful tone.
The aesthetic human qualty in the timbre of John's voice is absolutely one of a kind, and surely one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard

I miss John.
I'm not gonna lie. I get a little emotional when I listen to this. There was a time in my life when THIS was my most favorite song in all the world.
John Denver... Earth's Ambassador
I will listen to the most beautiful love song ever written forever
When I want to be alone and just day dream I put John's Darcy on and set it on repeat....I can't help having a tear or two. I live very close to the Carson Valley...so beautiful as is this masterpiece. Thanks John RIP
My dad lived in Gardnerville, Nevada. Close to the Walker River. Every time we drove there from LA we had Johns songs on. This one especially. Through the June Lake area we played Rocky Mountain High….

Going through JD,s discography on Spotify and found this gem! And that's why I'm here again xx

Hello Rachel's
I miss him so much. Lucky to have seen him in concert in 1972.
EYE SAW HIM IN 93.
A VERY TREASURED MEMORY ... R.I.P MATE
Jillian clark wish he had listened to you!
Where the walker runs down to the Carson Valley Plain
There lived a maiden, Darcy Farrow was her name
The daughter of old Dundee and a fair one was she
The sweetest flower that bloomed o'er the range
Her voice was as sweet as the sugar candy
Her touch was as soft as a bed of goose down
Her eyes shone bright like the pretty lights
That shone in the night out of Yerrington town
She was courted by Young Vandamere
A fine lad was he as I am to hear
He gave her silver rings and lacy things
And she promised to wed before the snows came that year
But her pony did stumble and she did fall
Her dyin' touched the hearts of us one and all
Young Vandy in his pain put a bullet through his brain
And we buried them together as the snows began to fall
They sing of Darcy Farrow where the Truckee runs through
They sing of her beauty in Virginia City too
At dusky sundown to her name they drink a round
And to young Vandy whose love was true
Another great singer taken from us too soon.
I’ve read the FAA plane crash report that took John Denver’s life. Won’t post any details about it, suffice it to say that it was traumatic.
I learned to play guitar by listening to his music, and ultimately learned to fly in part so I could understand what inspired John Denver.
The fuel switch was hard to get to. Low on fuel. He had asked the pump attendant to take a ride w him but attendant was on duty so wasnt allowed. John told him he didnt need gas as he'd only be less than an hour.
Yup me too at a small airport outside of Denver...they called it .."""touch and go"""
I loved it ‼️
Simply amazing.
Was mentioning of pocket necessary 😂😂😂😂
