    The Ducati 1199 Panigale S is a mould-breaking superbike, but how will it fare against one of our favourite supercars, the McLaren 12C? Will the McLaren's sheer power and incredible braking power be too much for the Ducati? Or will the Panigale's epic power to weight ratio rule the day? Our last supercar vs superbike outing at Cadwell Park saw the Nissan GT-R beat a Ducati 1098 - will the Panigale level the score this time out?

    To end all arguments, here it is. All things equal the bike rider will always be faster driving the car than the car driver will be riding the bike! It takes some skill to drive a car that fast, it takes more skill/technique and about 10 times more courage to ride a bike that fast.
    Bike/rider wins this test on all fronts.

      dave175a chances are 99% of bikers have driven a car probably more than a couple times chances are they went fast a few times, but not everybody has ever ridden a bike or know the first thing about going fast, little unfair to say the bike is more skilled, tiger woods is probably a better basketball player than Lebron is a golfer does that make him more skilled? just saying going fast in a car isn't as easy as people make it sound, agree you have to be a little more fearless on a bike, crash at 150mph dangers starts to become more equal for car and bike.

      MrFred1075 it takes alot more skill to ride a bike than to simply turn the wheel inside a safe snug little car.

      Thats bollocks, tecnically car is far more complete than a bike, basically bike is half a car, and depends on the agility of the rider honed over yrs of riding just like a gymnast, and if what yu are saying is true
      the entire moto gp wuld be competing in a much higher profile F1 or and other auto series but they are not, and many hve tried a hand at car racing and failed miserably, ( Casey stoner, carl fogarty ,wayne gardner, kevin schwantz) only Vale could hold a candle to the professional race and rally drivers.

    While a bike has more torque, the car has much more ground contact with 4 wheels. So, the more curves the more the car will usually gain on the bike. Being able to have the double or more ground contact helps putting power to traction.
    Bike's achille wheel remains ground contact, which is about one postcard size.

    I think this all comes down to which your regular owner would be faster in. Most people are able to coax more performance out of a supercar than a superbike and pretty much everybody would feel safer pushing the envelope in a car.

    • @hunghuge7717
      @hunghuge7717 10 років тому +7

      True but what about price? Most people can't afford a 12c where most people can afford a superbike. Even if you count riding gear you're looking at around £15k for most superbikes. Doesn't matter if your regular owner is Schumacher - they're not getting more pace out of a car of that price even if they're only half trying on the bike.

    • @hunghuge7717
      @hunghuge7717 10 років тому +3

      ***** I completely understand and for this test it doesn't matter but there should always be the caveat that the car is out of most people's realistic price range. Just trying to add a little relevancy. As for most bikers not being able to get over 30% - I'm sorry but there are a lot more car drivers who don't know what their car is capable of. Even if we take that 30% and allow a car to run way more - maybe 60% (which is unrealistic but I'll play to your idea), in that price bracket you're talking about cars like a Fiesta ST - even that is way more than most superbikes. With that kind of competition the biker doesn't need to get the most from it because it's so much more capable in the first place.

      its much harder to get fast on the bike there alot of physical and mental limitation as well as fear of leaning the bike put 2 relatively new rider and driver on superbike and supercar most people will go faster on a supercar i have both and i can tell you i can get with 5 seconds of a gt3 racing driver with the same level of car but im at least 10 seconds of the pace of sbk rider on similar bike on a gp track and i have been riding for at least 10 years in advance group.

      Short technical track with alot of low speed corners favors the car long big gp track that have alot of straights and fast corners favor the bike unless you have 1000hp super car with semi slicks and proper aero like the new zr1/sf90xx or senna where it will most likely beat the bike in pretty much any track but to even have a chance with the bike you need at least a gt3rs level of car to take on today modern crop of 210+ superbike with winglets.

      Cadwell is biased for cars. Tight and very twisty in places. Donnington is fast and flowing with a long straight under the Dunlop Bridge. Any car without downforce will have a really hard time beating a bike around a track. Friction is not a function of area of contact. So, a bike can theoretically have as much mechanical grip as a car. Also a good portion of a motorcycle's weight (i.e. the rider) is always in the right place, changing the weight distribution to better suit braking, cornering or accelerating, whatever the bike is doing at that moment. However, when you start adding downforce of the order of 3 times the weight of a car (say F1), bikes just can't keep up.
    That was the technical part. My heart says, no car can ever come close to the thrill of riding a motorcycle. For me, its the next most thrilling thing to do after gliding close to the ground in a wing-suit.

    These sort of comparisons are only "sort of" interesting. I love bikes and all thing about them BUT whereas any Wally (or Wilma) can drive a car real real fast, to put in a comparable performance riding a bike it takes a very specialized and finely honed skill.

    • @godofwar424

      Riding a bike well is an art. There's simply no other way to put it. Any moron can drive a car fast, even around corners. Whereas a moron jumping onto a bike trying to out-corner somebody experienced even if that person has a much faster bike will end up flat on their ass.

    • @ianrkav
      @ianrkav 10 років тому +3

      Ian Dickinson Yes generally. But driving a car well is an art too. Any moron can drive a car, or ride a bike, fast in a straight line, but come to the twisty bits and both will be off the track. However, It does take a bit more practice on the bike for the twisty bits.

    This is so awesome... Thing about bikes is that everybody can afford them. You get the same performance than million dollars cars but at a price tag that the average joe can afford. That is why bikes are so amazing. $20k bike vs $178k car and the bike still won. That's an awesome performance to money ratio. Truly amazing! Both awesome machines though! Good day!

      yeah but bike are hard to ride coming from a person who owns both my ducati v4 is alot harder to ride then c43 amg in fact my times on track are quite similar i was able to clock my c43 at 1:21 seconds and my v4 speicale at 1:14 seconds at bira circuit mind you that im avid fan of bike riding while car is more of status symbol to me it only took me about a few track day to get my c43 to that time while it took me years to hit 1:15 on my v4 in fact my first time on the v4 its near 1:35 even i did better on my c43 on the first timed lap i did a 1:33 even now i was not able to extract the full potential of my bike in fact my bike should be able to do a sub 1min at bira because troy baylis did a 1:03 at bira with a 1199s and my v4 speciale is so much better it takes alot to be able to ride fast on a superbike alot more scrafice and effort in cars all you need to do is get the lines rite the breaking point down and the steering in sync with the trottle on a bike you have to all that and also move around the bike from left to right brace for braking and tuck on the straight its alot more physical im completely and physically depleted after a long 10 lap stint on v4 while i can ride almost all day in the car im not trying to compare the c43 and the v4 the v4 will easily rape the c43 if given the rite rider but that the thing about bikes very few can ride them well

    I won't say who is faster on the track, cars or bikes. But, to get a car of that performance level you need hundreds of thousands of any currency. On the other hand, most people can afford to buy that Ducati, $20,000 - $30,000 depending on options and location. You would also have enough left over, compared to the McLaren, price to buy some lessons to learn to ride it that fast.

    In my mind ,usually, car should be faster,but, some race tracks are there for bikes better...
