Ribbon Mic Drum Overhead Shootout featuring the Royer R121, Shure KSM 313, Coles 4038, and the AEA R84. SoundPure Pro Audio Expert, Travis Hall, talks more about using ribbon mics as drum overheads in the third installment of our Drum Overhead Series. All four mics were recorded in our pro studio with the Phoenix DRS 8 mic pre and our Apogee Digital Symphony converter. Check out our other drum overhead videos, where we discuss SDC and LDC mics in more detail. If you like what you hear, check out this gear at SoundPure.com or call us anytime at 919.682.5552. I got C and D right.
Thank you, I was literally just trying to hear the royer vs the ksm313 and there are no shootouts online and I’d still even call soundpure to order since they have the only videos for it , but dang it can grind my gears when nobody puts done the answers to what was what mic even years later because right here and now I’m just in that manic mode where I’m trying to a b everything I can and just cross more potential candidates off the list until I find what I like AND can use as swiftly as possible . Or idk maybe I’m the only atypical engineer who does this lol
Terrible that there is no mic reveal
Sound Pure UA-cam channel is pretty bad or uneven.
the second recording sounded soo much better to me!
If B really is the Coles then I'm really digging that one....D was my second favorite.
same here!
Coles is my favorite for drums and horn. AEA for vocals.
NO MIC REVEAL??? I AM A STUDENT DESPERATELY TRYING TO FIND A 121 ALT FOR AN UPCOMING SESSION AND THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SO HELPFUL NOT HAVING A MIC REVEAL FEELS LIKE EMOTIONAL ABUSE UGHHHH
Can you please post the mic’s on here I don’t want to have to call years later
D is my favourite by far
Real toss-up between B and D for me, I would say B sounds best with light EQ, D sounds best with the close mics added in. Don't care for C at all after EQ, as it sounds thin and nasally, with too much mid-range emphasis. A sounds quite crisp, but is lacking some of the warmth present in B and D. Of course, they all sound pretty good, and you have to wonder how much different placements would affect their sound. I'm sure if you placed C slightly closer to the kit, it would get a little more boomy/warm sounding, and a little less clinical...
You have to volume match these for any serious comparison to be made...
is it me, or 3rd and 4th pairs sound like there are some pretty evident phase issues? a bit annoying. Also, be useful to know which was which by the end of the video, if you were looking for people to make a decision on what to buy. Cheers!
Coles are killer.
I really love A and B. What mics are them?
Thanks for the comparison ! If I had to choose one pair, I'd ask myself the following: which pair would I want to EQ the least, (ie: which one is for me the most "mix-ready"), and it was B. After seeing that SPOILER it was the Coles, which I already really favored in other comparisons, I need to get myself a pair of these. They just seem to have the right balance of good natural tone and "vibe", "mojo", whatever you wanna call it. They rock.
A 1:22 B 1:37 C 1:51 D 2:06
Is it just me or was C out of phase with each other?
Could you please do Coles 4038 vs AeA N8 vs AeA r84, but really get in there and do OH, Front of kit, Front of kick, room mics?
Can’t believe I watched this and there wasn’t a answer. I will never by anything from this company just because of that.
If I had to guess though.
I’d say that the shure was B
The Royers were C
And I came to hear the Coles but to me they could have been A or D. The similarities between the R48 and Coles would be hard to tell. A and D both sounded great to me when I’m looking for a Vintage Ribbon sound. Guess I’ll never know though.
That is a nice State Faults shirt. Amazing band
by far B is best
Can you pm me which mic is which please? Cheers
I thought D the least natural with some annoying hi eq. B was the 2nd most eq pleasant. C was the smoothest and most balanced with a wonderful natural compression however it also killed the top air more than the others, but that aside i thought c ws best and a was second last.
1st C
2nd B
3rd A
4th D
post eq the coles is the shit. really 3d and detailed image while retaining size and warmth.
Andrew Jones the royers sounds pretty damn honest though. no wonder classical guys are all about 'em.
I called and asked:
(SPOILER ALERT)
A: Shure
B: Coles
C: Royer
D: AEA
That's not true, Shure KSM313 is the brightest here and it's B for sure. Here are correct answers
Mic A - AEA R84
Mic B - Shure KSM313
Mic C - Royer R121
Mic D - Coles 4038
Exactly, thats what they told me aswell! A-R84- B-Shure C-Royer D- Coles....Steve is full of it!
and who is who ? , i like the B
Listing these in the description would have been amazing :
Set A : KSM,
Set B : R-121
etc…
Appreciate the effort. Thanks for the demo.
stereo image is awful.
They all sound the same after the eq
too bad it wasn't just a straight drum beat
Aren't the OH mics a bit too far?
