  • From time to time i love to set my mics in comparison. For me it is the best way to learn about their advantages and disadvenateges in sound and to hear what happens in direct comparison to each other.
The Coles 4038 are some very colouring ribbon mic with tons of low end and big low mids vs. the extra shiny MXL 603s which i usually use in my bands rehearsal room and my budget tip the Shure PGA 181. They are all setup in a classic overhead spaced pair position about 1m away from the center of the snare. The AKG D112 is placed inside the kick drum about half way in, looking between center and shell. The other both outside mics are not used, they are muted. Of course i did some post processing, but nothing fancy. The Coles got a boost at 10k of 10dB and some lower mid cut out. MXL and Shure got only some mid cut off and some saturation from plugin because the Coles are running through my Warm Audio WA273 mic preamp and get some saturation from it.
I play my trusty Ludwig Classic Maple in 24x14, 13x09, 16x16 Configuration and the Snare is a Ludwig Raw Brass in 14x6,5.
    All cymbals are Zildjian.
Heads are Remo Vintage Coateted Emperor on Toms, Coated PS3 on Bass Drum and a Emperor Dot X on Snare Top.
Hope you enjoy, feel free to comment what is your favourite overhead mic or ask any questions.
