From my understanding, meditation was used to train the mind to remain calm during actual fighting so that you could think clearly about what you were doing. I once while just lightly kicking a concrete block managed to break it into two parts. I tried again with other blocks but all I got was a bruised foot. From watching my uncle, a brickmason split bricks with a trowel, I understood it had to do with the angle and not the force of a blow which tends to break a hard object.
2:43 - "I focused my chi into my jaw, and two minutes later I had this beard. However, I need to practice more on the concentration of my chi, as this tiny mustache was an unintended side-effect. Now, if you will excuse me, I must go and shave using the air currents from my hand movements so that I may try again."
i love how the person in the video says: "All you have to do is hit your skull with your palm for 2 hours, and then bang your head against the sandbag for 2 hours" as if its nothing :P
i admire their dedication, the will and the power they have ova their body!!! so awesome QUESTIONS: can girls do this too? if not then why not? ,do this boys eva get married? why nt? what happened to all of this boys when they get older? where do they go? I know it says at the begining that its a lifestyle is it then how they live their life always? do they ever get to go home? how are they choose to be in the school? and who decides and what age to go school? GREETINGS FROM DOWNEY CALIFORNIA
@Pr0b3U the sounds are real, the reason they dont match in time the visual picture is because the picture is slowed down but the sound is left in it's original speed. It's a kinda immature editing "mistake", but they might have done it on purpose, so that the sound doesnt get distorted.
@skydreampirate Yeah, the horse stance is probably one of the most painful to endure over long periods of time, the average person can't hold it for for than a few minutes. I know masters have to be able to hold it for hours. The strain it puts on your thighs is incredible.
As I undertsand it. You can most likely be taught kung fu but not become a monk and that is because to be a monk you go through rigouus testing as a child and only a few are selected to become warrior monks...the rest simply become monks...it is also literally a life time dedicataion...but u can learn shaolin style kung fu at the temple...well a center near it anyways
I really respect the hard qi gong masters, but I think they got one thing wrong... Their skulls definitely look more than just four times harder compared to a normal skull...
@aqstoy not familiar with exact rules of shaolin monks.. but i'll answer in general so that u can get a basic idea about the lifestyle of a monk.. girls can learn kung fu but i dont think they are allowed to be at the shaolin temple. and no you can't get married while you're a monk because the whole idea of being a monk is to be rid of all the worldly desires and seek out the "Truth". they'll just spend their life as monks.. and ur question about home falls under worldly desires too..
I have to jump in regarding their skull hardening exercises, I will be having my fourth brain surgery next year (2 in 1979, 1 in 1993, and my next in 12012) so I would HIGHLY recommend against skull hardening!! I put my info in to let everyone to know brain surgery aint' fun, and it always comes with some kind of damage!! Do they understand about the brain inside the skull, it ain't going to get to get tougher, you are jusd hing ho un on ro roblems... ralway'w!!
@DUNiT718 just because an army has soldiers who can shoot well and know kung fu does not make it powerful. air power determines dominance on the modern battlefield.
break sticks, bang your head...? and those sounds every time they move...?! when he says that I got the impression he's mocking them, like why would a sane man do that?? I think this documentary misses the spiritual part of shaolin...it'l like something made by Hollywood *shudders*, flashy... I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that those who made the documentary show enough respect for shaolin...
i know what you mean, but i think you misunderstand kungfu. at least in shaolin, kunfu was invented for two reasons, 1 fight for security, 2 keep healthy because monks have to sit long time every day for praying. i also believe this is why chinese kungfu is superior to japan and korean, because it is much more than just fighting.
i dont think people really understand these guys.. lets say they sleep for 7 hours a day... that means there training for the other 17 hours... are you? my moneys on the monks
I realize this is youtube and the world is full of immature punks but making some of these comments show your true ignorance. Good Luck In Life. But im not putting up with it. Comments are disabled.
The discipline and strength of these people are remarkable!

@rax7 its the ledge it leaning agaisnt whih gave it the perfect cut, because it just bent next to it with enough force to break,.
So they train themselves hard for fighting in the beginning, then just get into different kinds of dance forms towards retirement?
i love how the person in the video says: "All you have to do is hit your skull with your palm for 2 hours, and then bang your head against the sandbag for 2 hours" as if its nothing :P

@shannonjazz Well, one of the most popular stances is a basic boxing stances called the "cat stance" Shaolin Kung fu uses that stance as well..

I really respect the hard qi gong masters, but I think they got one thing wrong...
Their skulls definitely look more than just four times harder compared to a normal skull...
It is a shame how a bullet can make all those years of training go to waste.

place a piece of paper on a wal, punch it for two hours without stopping ... the wall may deteriorate :))
@Ichthyologistic the sounds aren't real, man. How could you have the same sounds in slow motion.
@mahmymy i would lovee to learn kung fu but im only 14 and would like to learn it from the comfort of my home..
yes, for sure, but the problem is, you have to go the temple and seek the teaching.
lol how do you put a person's "neck" in an "armlock"
They shud keep the tradition and make all shoalin kung fu learners baldies.
at 1:59, that's like fake..look at that thing, it;s like it's been cut. so perfectly straight when it breaks.

way to put subtitles on top of subtitles so no one can read it...
