- Celebrating the halfway mark of the project (in number only), this special episode goes into showing how the research, ski community and planning come together to make each line successful. Diving into the applications, websites, people and decision making process days before even arriving to a zone, the process behind the scenes is shown to highlight some of the resources necessary to make this project feasible. Joined by Tucker Patton, guide / owner of Triple Point Expeditions and photographer Ming Poon, the crew makes a blitz to Idaho and tackles an iconic couloir in the Sawtooth Mountains.
This is Episode 25 for The FIFTY, and line 25 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

That drop in technique would have me trembling like a leaf. Maximum respect.
yeah!!!!!! I will s.....my pants and 1,000 prayers........and still s...again!
I love seeing how this project has developed from the first episode to now. Info is on point, editing is on point. It's fun to see how you have been developing as a ski mountaineer. Shout out to Bjarne for holding this whole thing together. Legend.
Yeah Bjarne and I have both learned a ton along the way. From the skiing to the storytelling, it's been a massive learning process. Thanks for noticing!
Definitely NOT "too Inside Baseball" for your hardcore followers! Thanks again for the insights. Stay well! Stay safe!
Cody awesome job with this! This is really useful information and opens the door to accessibility! Ive been ice climbing a few years now, I ski groomers occasionally but that's pretty much it for skiing! I rock climb, through-hike, mountain bike, and kayak! I've always wanted to extend my winter adventures so I can be doing cool things all year round! I started watching your Fifty series and have been really motivated to organize my gear and continue to learn about backcountry skiing! It's tremendously helpful when you open these paths of information that I can go and expand on with research! Episodes like this and your gear show-and-tells are always appreciated! Thanks and stay safe! Oh Shout-out to Bjarne, of course, you're also the man for essentially bringing us this content!
Snowmobiles. Nice. I did this in April or May some 20+ years ago with a buddy. The flats from Stanley Lake campground were all melted out and flooded. We spent hours crossing logs in our telemark boots over swampland just to the get the base of the climb.
By the way, Cody. My kids (age 7 & 9) and I regularly watch the resort segment from Days of Our Youth to get stoked. They jokingly call you the "nerd guy" in the video. Thought you'd enjoy.
It was an instant classic for sure
Joep VN I agree, one of my favorite ski videos of all time
Cody and Bjarne - the isolation heroes we deserve
What's more important than skiing the line? Skiing the next line!
I _LOVE_ this insight into your daily processes on skiing these lines!
Please share more of this in every episode!!!
Loved that format for #25! Love the somewhat reckless willow hops and "oh shit" parts on the bottom lol I wrap myself up in that shit at steamboat all the time
I really liked the "how-to'" part at the beginning - thanks for sharing that! And nice job on the line too!
Best. Epic. Yet. Knowledge is Power, and this is what you demonstrate. Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You give me as any Irish man inspirations to follow my mountain dreams.
Working from home, watching the 50...
Fave quote from this one. “oh god!”
Loved the intro on this video. Really love getting to understand the process.
Awesome, thank you!
Awesome, loved all the extra info!
There's no way I would've straight lined that narrow couloir with all those rocks on either side. That's why you guys are you and I'm me :)
I like how we get to see Cody get in there, and then watch Tucker, who is merely a very highly skilled mortal tackle the same. I think I may have made a diamond.
Thanks Cody for doing this.
Love the details on trip planning and execution!
Thanks Cody for that info on choosing routes and timing.
These series are well done, been enjoying them all
Solid work Cody. Congrats on 25, stay safe and work hard on the remainder. You'll get it
another great episode. I can’t get enough of these.
Great stuff, as always.
This was great. Love the explanation of logistics.
Congrats on 25!
Man, watching the top of that I'm glad I turned around on that thing, A friend and I were out there a week or two before you and the snow was pretty gnar.
Yeh! Great video guys. Keep it up
Magnificent project. Great documentation. Good tips. This is YES!
I love this! Amazing job
Nice dude. You're cranking through these lines. Fun to watch.
Amazing ! 25 ! Thank you for bringing some sunshine in this somewhat darker time ! Cheers !
Great job with the Production! Loved this episode for how you explained how you do things. I can’t wait for the next episode.
Another great video man!! Been here from the beginning and going to be till the end!!
Well done on 25! Can’t wait to watch the next 25 when the time is right. Stay safe!
25! Props dudes. You guys are actually so sick! You got it boys, I believe.
I'm obsessed with this series. So sick
Another awesome video! I absolutely love hearing from the locals about their area of expertise. I’d love to see more of that for sure! Also Bjarne is crushing!
That was really awesome!
TWENTY FIVE MAAAANNN!! Well done!!! I was waiting for a cold cheering beer at the end. This project is so great! Keep it up Cody!
Might be my favorite one yet! Nice work! Love the planning/prep discussion, it's great that you focused on the safety aspect of outdoor adventures. What a cool project y'all are working on. Cheers!
The extra technical info is great, I'd love to see more in videos to come.
Best series on UA-cam for people who love mountains and riding. Thanks for showing the realistic approach and minor details. Keep up the awesome work!
Really interesting! I love your series!
I'm digging the Bivy map layout before the attempts. Great job with this project!
Congratulations Cody and Bjarne!
Having pretty much closed up here in Canada in prime time and big mountain ski season, this made my week. Thanks Cody and Bjarne. Stay safe and healthy!
Huge thumbs up, another outstanding episode characterised by your signature values, transparency and integrity.
Avi aware and how you care ... Thank You for so many top tips.
I'm glad you were on the mountain when you were and not yesterday. There was a 6.5 earthquake really close to the mountain.
Favorite episode yet, I loved the behind the scenes part at the beginning, and the Sawtooths are awesome. I’m a junior in HS and was looking forward to a ski mountaineering camp with SMG this April, until it was canceled due to Covid-19. Happy to live vicariously through your awesome adventure, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is my favourite content channel I've found in a long time. This episode was especially interesting. Tons of respect Cody & gang.
Excellent story, great spirit and vibe and very good insights into ski mountaineering. Very well done. Keep it up.
Much appreciated!
Just found this channel, such a gem
Cody and Bjarne, thanks a bunch for making this, big inspiration for me and this project really embodies my love of the mountains. Enjoying watching this during quarantine, and this vlog is a real blessing for me and my family to watch and see all the cool shit you do.
I really like and enjoy how Cody explain what happens before each climb, all the info is crucial! Thank you guys!
Great episode! And am glad that Ming also got the orange jacket memo......
Hey Cody, love this series, I am just getting into mountaineering and want to start ski mountaineering as I am more comfortable on skis than my own feet. Haha. But I guess this year isn't the year, so I'm working on building my van up for living in, and watching your videos for inspiration. Keep it up man, stay healthy, and keep making good informed decisions. 👊
Great work. I'm loving this series. Stay safe. Looking forward to when you can continue the project!
Thanks. Looking forward so much too.
Cody, best series ever, made me get the shivers every episode. Keep it up and thanks to Bjarne for bringing it to us, Outstanding.
Congrats boys, big accomplishment. Keep it up can't wait for more edits!
Please make sure you do one on Bjorne’s work ! And keep showing us how you make the decisions, etc. It’s important for the amateur and wannados like me to be reminded of the need to plan, study and plan, and stay flexible. Day beprocess, all the way through, makes this special. Thx from all of us over here.
This has been very useful.
Love the "inside baseball"! That's what makes this series better than the rest. I love that it's not just so-called "ski porn."
Bravo Cody....eres grande,bro.
From Spain.....with agry feeling by pandemia, your adventures and your way of live give us the freedon that we need in that time.
Congrat and keep safe please.
I’m always impressed how much vert you climb, and always seem unphased!
Fire!!!!
Solid line. Glad you made it to my backyard. Love skiing the Sawtooths. Enjoy beautiful Idaho.
Thanks again!
Hey Cody and Bjarne, I am a huge fan of yours!
I am from Valle di Fassa from north Italy. After skiing from when I was 5 years old - now I am 26 - I finally pulled the trigger and bought the ski touring equipment also because of the huge inspiration you guys bring me.
Could you please go a little bit through the clothing layering options you go thought one of your ski tours?
Hard shells, soft shells, and what not, to approach a peak expedition.
Thanks again for your great content and thoughts, it really is something fresh and new to experience in the world of videography and freeskiing.
Please keep up with the great work you are doing!
Thanks man. Yeah clothing episode could be in the works!
The technology @ our disposal these days is amazing. Far cry from calling the Forcast Center every morning before cell phones and climbing in leather, three pins and skinny boards. You got this. YEW!
Stoked for you guys to be at 25, respect! Looked super gnarly up top and really fun and playful powder down under. Love the "The FIFTY" a bummer that this virus paused it, we'll have to wait this one out, stay safe everyone!
Stone ground.. always wondered how that started. Epic talents lads.
It's so great to get up on that mountain when on a stay at home order,,, Thank you!!!!
Especially since it was a month ago before we were all locked at home and the Sawtooths didn't have massive earthquakes.
Critical video drop timing 👌
U little sandbaggers! I thought I was gonna have to wait till next year for another episode 👍
i really envy ur life, keep kicking butt cody!
good job ,cool ! looked like some poor snow ! in search of the perfect turn
Amazing you guys! Lots of acknowledgment, lots of research and info! But also a lot of guts on these steep chutes! One mistake can ruin the whole experience!
I love all the explanation and background! wish every video had that :-D
Great Inside Baseball segment. I first learned about the Fifty from my AIARE 1 instructors who pointed to it as a way to see snow science in practice. Oh, and more Elyse please.
More vids like this please!
"This is where it's going to get tricky." Oh man!
Hi Tucker, way to go! Hope you and the Fam are. well?!
Climbed this in Summer 07 or 08. Talk about an incredible view!
I. Love. It.
Cool line Cody
This is good. Now when people ask about planning your trips you can just send them to this episode. Great series, thanks.
So true
Very informative, I liked this format. Stay safe till you can start again. Love the bonus episodes, hint.
Thanks, will do!
Awesome video, thanks. The road you snowmobiled goes by mountain bike later in the Spring.
Yes it does
Never thought I would say this to another dude, Love the Socks man! The episodes are cool too :)
Glad you like them and it's okay, no judgement...;)
hell ya, thanks!
Really excellent vid @Cody_Townsend hopefully worth it for you to do the extra lift on the checklist. Def not too much inside baseball, as you can tell the people love it.
Like it or lump it your vids have become a defacto resource for others who may not be as knowledgeable about BC travel, so providing the extra content is in a real way contributing to a safer backcountry. And honestly if you were to need content for down days of COVID you've got more on the table with safety topics that help people better prepare for, survive in, and safety practices while SkiMo'ing. Your channel now has the audience & appetite for further collabs and bonus episodes with Forecasters, beacon practice techniques, BC technologies. Some of that goes beyond your sponsorships (or opens doors to new ones) but it's an interesting way to think of reaching your audience beyond the 50 gnar. Speaking of, can't believe you're a pro... I'm so much radder than you.
agree man. well expect for the end. But everything else is what I'm looking to do with Bonus Episodes down the line.
Really enjoyed the planning and safety routines that you explained! I feel that for future episodes including in-field observations of the snowpack might be very useful for an audience trying to get experience of what signs of instability can look like. Thank you!
Agreed, it's just sometimes that's not always pertinent and sometimes the struggle, the challenge, the humor or something else is the dominant storyline and ultimately I'm trying to tell stories with this video project, not necessarily always be educational. It's a look inside to what we do, but by no means a guide to what you should do.
@@CodyTownsend
So far, your stories are extremely educational! Keep 'em coming!
So sick
Have you thought of hosting events/talks/forums in the towns you visit? You’ve got a lot of fans down here in Sun Valley area who would have loved to hear you and your team talk about the project (when we’re not sheltering in place that is). Just a thought. Keep up the good work!
Yeah totally, I’m actually looking into a live presentation event with a small paywall to raise money for food banks and COVID-19 related financial assistance. Trying to set that up.
@@CodyTownsend Right on! I hope it comes together...we'll be there. Take care!
Sick episode Cody. Really enjoy seeing the process, also as a non American having the map animation gives me a bit more context to where you guys are. My Dad is now hooked on this series, next season might be the season to get him on some skins 🤞
Homeboy's got a toque on!
yeaaaa tahoe represent!!
Hey it’s another Tucker! We are a rare bunch and all oddly look alike
Hey! Love the episodes. Ever skied Grand Targhee? Fun easy skiing but always great snow.
Congratulations on the 25 milestone and thanks for the awesome series! Loved the "how-to" part of this video, as well.
Anyway, I just hope that the current situation doesn't impact you and the series too badly, especially with many lines probably sitting in good condition out there... Remember that videos like this are a real solace for people who don't have the pleasure of living anywhere near mountains and are just stuck at home right now.
So, yay to 25 and wishing you an even better other 25! (That must've actually been my first comment on YT, damn this quarantine situation)
Oh no, it's impacted us greatly. In the middle of the prime time of our season, the time of year when all the big, scary, hard lines come into condition...we're sitting at home like the rest of you. It sucks but there are a lot bigger problems in the world right now so it's small potatoes in the scheme of things.
@@CodyTownsend That's what I figured, but this situation might ironically benefit your channel. More people staying home (including outdoorsy people) means more people watching videos - a friend working at Vimeo says usage has surged big. You're a great speaker and have a lot to teach or just chat about, many super-cool friends to interview remotely and whatnot...
If there's ever a moment when many of us have spare time for storytelling or how-to videos from your home or backyard, that moment must be now.
Bring back the "It's called backcountry skiing" vibes by filming something with your wife, show how you train, chat to famous or not-so-famous friends or whatever. I'm absolutely no expert, but I figure none of this can hurt the channel :)
Good luck!
@@CodyTownsend There are no small potatoes in Idaho! Thanks and keep well.
