The FIFTY - Line 26/50 - Marriage Test in the Mountains - The Sickle, ID

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The classic line call "The Sickle" in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho is a ski line that at first sight, just begs to be skied. It's a visual beacon that draws all eyes in with its dramatic, arcing, cleave in the side of Hortsmann Peak. This steep and narrow line combined with an adventurous and arduous approach served to be the perfect line for Cody Townsend to introduce the world of ice axes, crampons and laboriously long ski tours to his award winning, world champion, professional freeride skier wife, Elyse Saugstad. Though decorated as one of the most accomplished freeskiers of all time, the world of ski mountaineering is completely new to Saugstad and served up a day in the mountains that was the ultimate test of a marriage.
This is Episode 26 for The FIFTY, and line 26 of 50 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Sandbagging your loved ones, into longer than advertised adventures, is one of the great joys in life!
Well said. And it's even better when they come back with a smile on their face.
@@CodyTownsend that's the confirmation of the right choice. That's how I chose my wife;)
Hahaha.. sand bagging SOB.
My husband does this to me all the time. 5 more minutes... 5 miles later...
"No trust me, it's ONLY like another 30min, max!"
"It's called skiing... because you have skis on." Truer words have never been spoken.
Best one liner of the series?
And related: "It's called mountain biking because you are bringing your bike along."
"There's no pride lost in sideslipping." - Cody Townsend
This was my biggest takeaway from this episode! "Cody says it's ok"
@@cjohns716 Honesty, Cody's emphasis on bailing on a climb if conditions are shit, surviving the climb is more important than getting the perfect clip, and putting this series on hold because of the pandemic are really awesome to see. A lot of people watch these videos, and getting messages like that into people's heads is really great to see.
Great project. Seemed ok at the bottom. Gets cold there huh!
“I’m a professional skier, Duh. I’m not a professional walker. Let’s be real, we walked 14 miles to side slip down...halfway down a couloir” #forthewin
It's the best quote of the project so far.
Cody Townsend mic drop moment for sure. Still laughing
@@CodyTownsend Close second from the episode was "It's called skiing because you have skis on."
@@andrewtuegel7407 yeah, id buy a t shirt w that on it lmao
Exactly. And this kind of crap is all over UA-cam. Not bad people. Just questionable motivation and accomplishment factor.
Dude the fact that your wife came out of all of that with a smile on her face is awesome. Lucky dude
Oh the joy of a scalped couloir, and being on skis longer than everyone who’s already made an icy trench in it.... hahaha. Thanks for showing UA-cam it’s not all about powder and backflips!
So true! It sucks when you're the guy on 192's and everyone else was on 178's. That bridging was sketchy for me!
“It’s uphill both ways, you ski terrible snow, it’s super sketchy.... and then you go home” Elyse just got the full indoctrination for sure! Loved this episode!!
wait for a powder and that's when its good
"It's called skiing cause you have skis on!" Love it. Also
Yes. I am going skiing now. In my living room, in isolation. But I will have skis on so, all good.
If I wasn't watching this video two years after the fact, I would be starting a "we want more Elyse" campaign. These are so well done.
It so great and refreshing to see raw footage like this exposing normal feelings and fears of pro skiers while skiing. Rather than the polished quick cut films just showing the money shots. It helps us non-pros feel like these goals are attainable with focus and hard work and not beyond the grasp of us mere mortals. Thanks!
That's cause we ain't super humans cut from a different cloth or DNA. We're just normal people doing what we love.
i would sell my first born son for snow like this on the east coast lol
Hunter Brown dyin man....I was thinking the same thing. I was like...look at all that NOT ice. Haha.
Elyse is my hero!! I admire her positivity throughout it all and that bit about smiling. We want more Elyse!!
This video is the definition of type 2 fun
That squeaking snow gives me goosebumps even as I sit in my cozy arm chair. Also dig that you include the lame parts where you're just side slipping and the danger, need more of that in videos.
I wish this series could go on forever
"It's called skiing because you have skis on" is the most ski mountaineering thing to say
For the record, I was not surprised she could do it. I have followed her for a long long time. It was so cute when you were worried for her, but I was like, "she's skiing it better than Cody." Great Episode! Love you two!
I really appreciate the overhead drone shot with muted skinning noises. That kind of editing makes it feel so natural and it’s so easy to overlook.
So great to have a woman on and also show the reality of couloir skiing which is often funky snow like this one. Loved it.
Snowboarder here, i'm loving this project and the content you're putting out Cody. It's helping keep the stoke alive while we're on lockdown here in Scotland and missing out on hitting our mountains. Good fart by the way👍
🤘🏻😂
The couple that ski together stay together. Bonding in mountains! What more could you ask for.
Perfectly titled episode! I feel like missions like this are a marriage rite of passage. I'll just remember to smile next time I'm bitching at husband, lol!
Another awesome episode, Elyse is a badass
Im a snowboarder and I love these videos. Absolutely love watching mountaineering.
Awesome episode, despite the crappiest snow of the whole series! Mister Cody Townsend, you are one lucky man. Your wife is a true BADASS!
So stoked to be watching this particular episode from my sofa. My goodness, unbelievably ridiculous.
Look at that nice wide open field off the back! You guys are nuts!
This video just saved Wednesday. Maybe April.
Beats getting the Covid 19 Virus!
They're typically several months behind on releasing these. It takes time to do all of the cutting, audio processing, voiceovers, color matching, re-rendering, etc., and the Bjarne / Cody team can make a shitload of footage in a few days.
"Sickle line"....shorten that to just "Sick"..that was epic! Elyse owned that line...Respect! that was one steep rocky, tight snow crack in the mountain...I was concerned for all you guys...edge of my seat! to date my best marriage test was taking my wife on a canoe trip, we survived it but this test of yours is on an entirely different level..stay safe!
Awesome. Good for you two. Peace and stay healthy!
Another sick Idaho lines!
I got so excited when I saw that Alyeska sticker on Elyse's helmet.
Best episode yet, so good thanks.
Cody: "Call it skiing because you have skis on"
Kilian Jornet on Troll Wall: Same
Can't believe you took her down the most rogue line yet dude haha
Yeah pretty ironic how that worked out.
You are a hell of a lucky guy that Elise is such a fighter and so incredibly though. I saw man sleeping in front of the bedroom for way less sandbagging.
@@CodyTownsend It's pretty unnerving to think that a pre-release would have sent her rag-dolling down that rocky couloir! Do you guys lock out your toes for these sort of "no-fall" lines? Also I'm curious why you're not using SHIFT bindings for any of these lines. Thanks!
love the Alyeska sticker on her helmet, my hometown mountain!
Easy to tell why you and Elyse are pro skiers (and walkers), your positive attitudes in the craziest conditions yet is impressive. Based on how this vid was portrayed I felt Sickle was the highest pucker factor yet, my heart rate was climbing at each crux. Plus, I used to camp at Redfish lake every year and know the spot. Incredible place in the summer, in the winter :mindblown:
Thanks. Yeah it actually wasn't the highest pucker factor yet. Just sort of looks that way.
@@CodyTownsend Either your friends at the Chop Shop have done you a disservice by making other lines look easy, or the WAG factor dialed up the pucker. BTW you undersold Elyse skills a bit at the start with all that accomplished talk, her skiing did the talking for her, dang.
Great episode, was so warming to see how much you care about wifey! Couldn’t stop smiling hope all is as well as can be with you guys!
Thanks Cody and wife - the Fifty is lifting my spirits in these turbulent times. Love to you both.
What a couple! Loved this video - to me, it felt like a very accurate representation of a true, typipcal backcountry skiing experience (at least from out here in the Adironacks). And you two got along beautifully the whole time!
Thumbs up for your wife. She is a champion!
Elyse is awesome! Smiling on that route? Damn! Way to get after it.
She is awesome! He wasn't kidding when he said she is a professional skier.

Definite slide for life material. Well done.
"Theo, Good boi" That's how professional skiers classify their pets.
In these times, your videos are really something to look forward to! Thanks
Glad you like them!
To those who Tumbs Down...I salute you. As you must have already completed The Fifty and have all the experience to say "Nah". = }
Impressed to watch your crew and (accomplished) life partner boot up and drop in with you!
You got yourself a keeper Cody. Strong work, both of you.
Strong work to you all on that mission ..... and thats great the wife went along with you, thanks for vids !!
Thanks 👍
Best ski-series ever.
Why thank you.
One of my favorite episodes so far! Thanks Elyse for joining Cody! (And Cody for somehow convincing her to go - Maybe a better line next time? There will be a next time, right??)
Imagine being so competent at a task they just achieved that you could do it w/o the some times very necessary “stoke factor”.
Like you don’t even have to love it fully, can make fun of the process, and just deal with the pain.
Great job Elyse. You guys rule. And performing a feat with aplomb like that!
That trip is what I'd call initiation lol, true a true rep of your beer sponsor! Great video. My girlfriend said the same thing "you didnt tell me it'd be this hard" on our last snow hike.
The lines in the background at 17:37 look pretty interesting...
Yeah, and the bowls on the backside of the saddle look like a big playground.
Dang, just looked at a map, and I was nearly there during the “Y2K” New Years panic. At the Bench hut. Did a “dawn patrol” run New Years morning, saw lights still on in Stanley, so we figured the world didn’t fall apart.
Had we known about this then...
Nothing to see here...
you two are a great couple. I don't know you both but you two are great!!
Thanks for taking me along on your amazing adventure
Sheila Vancouver BC Canada
P>S Shucksan Mount Baker is an amazing mountain and I watched your video. Narly
Thanks so much!
THANK YOU for making these videos and sharing! ❤️ your doggie!
Great per usual! Craziest moment 19:13!
This was fucking awesome. The editing, the footage, the views, the marital dialogue. Wow. Just Wow.
You skiers man... y’all “send it” like none other, and you get yourselves into some f-king icy gnarly shiz... as a snowboarder, there is just terrain that’s a no-no, but you skiers always seem to be able to find amazing places. High 🖐
Hahaha… she corrects him on the “she said”/“he said”. That is great
Best episode so far!
Many great mini lessons here about steep skiing and being safe while descending sketch snow.
Might be one of my favorite episode! Great vibe, scary line and all around fun
What a great episode! Elyse is an absolute doll! And a pretty darn good skier too! ; P
I'm from NH, right next to Wash, and I might get $"!+ for saying this... But, man, this is the best episode.
Love it. She rocks and should be on many more episodes!
Might not have convinced her well with this one. The good thing is it can only get better!
Love that Alyeska sticker Elyse! Love following the 50 journey.
Yeah Cody
Brigthend up my mood
Thanks
Was really hoping to watch her self-arrest practice before you went up. Those are always fun to watch.
Ok first off, the Fifty Project is AMAZING! I love it...second and more importantly you have an amazing wife (i'm sure that's old news to you hahaha!). Anyone who has watched a freeride ski video knows who she is but they don't usually show who someone "is" only how great they ski! You and Elyse are so genuine (not something you can fake given the difficulty faced of these lines, exposes your character real quick!) it awesome to see! keep up the good work and stay safe!!! Oh ya, Bjarne!!! your awsome!!! keep up the great work!
Thanks so much Derald
come for the skiing stay for the fart jokes
You guys are so frikkin' awesome. And inspiring. Best UA-cam series ever. Be well.
Awesome. Just want to add that my UA-cam auto titles translate the sound of the skis in snow as “applause.” It was applauding you the entire way. Thanks for this.
I love your adventures! Now that is living!
Awesome episode as always, you are such a beautiful couple . My compliments to Elyse she is just so precious!
Dude, personally this was the most anticipated episode of the series. Like checking youtube first thing every morning hoping for the new episode to drop. Highlight of the week! Got my fix, all good now ;)
Definitely one of the best The Fifty episodes! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just gave it a thumbs up and I haven’t even started watching it yet. So good to be able to watch another episode.
Ya got me, great content on awful snow, that's not easy! 24 to go, you got this!!!
This looks amazing! Wish I was out on the slopes but we all can’t go outside. This is one of my favorite series on UA-cam. Keep up the good work man.
Doing stuff like this with family. Doesn't get any better.
You guys bring a lot of positivity with you. That was a long day but a great episode. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you! Will do!
"It's so funny, because I literally thought the going up was going to be the worst part, . . . that is going to be the worst part. "
* she points to the skiing part of the trip *
Great video, wholesome and happy.
Sometimes it just more about who you have to be to get out and accomplish something than the quality of skiing. It's the opportunity to take on the unknown and slay whatever dragons you encounter.
Loved every minute.
Sporting dueling Idols there, I see. As much work of carbon fiber art as they are functional ice axe. So sweet!
They’re quite insane...and beautiful as you said
Can't wait to get back out there next year 🔥
"It's uphill both ways ... the line's behind us and we've got 5.5 miles ahead of us"
Thanks for sharing what you do...
Elyse: "You did not tell me it was gonna be that kind of day."
Cody: "Ehhhsss....essss..eh"
dude! sooooo awes(om)e in so many ways! one tuff Lady you got there! that was no joke! head bowed bowed from SW Colorado...
Awesome episode. Thanks you guys. Skiing feels so far away already.
Love this channel thanks for working so hard to post the fifty
Great stuff as always, thank you. You guys make it real for your viewers. The only thing I subscribe to on YT!
Cody, Your'e probably the luckyiest man on earth as your wife's able to follow you in a so steep line and endure a 12hours tour on top. What I don't understand is why she doesn't like your way to prevent bears/pumas attacks, "dropping" your "marks" along the way... even if it stinks a bit. LoL ;-) Anyway this made my day !!! Many, many, many thanks for this, the lockdown is much more easy to live with these little moments. #StaySafeStayHome
PS : Congrats to Elyse, she's truly impressive, for a first time she killed it !
Haha. Yeah, she just doesn't understand my techniques.
Seriously impressed with your lady. Charger!
Powder, a foreign substance. Love the vids man congratulations on halfway.
Appreciate it!
Really tempting to belay down that top stuff
this was honestly one of my fav vids in the series
Cody...who was the single planker at the top ? Was he with you the whole tour ? Oh...that wife of yours is a keeper.
Epic! Drone footage at 19:37 says it all. Nice job by all.
