    On the R5 1st Curtain Electronic shutter or fully mechanical is way to get longer exposures. If fully electronic shutter selected then 0.5s is the max. Caught me out initially too!

  • @richardbellomy5607

    Electronic Shutter Mode on the R5 limits you to only .5 second whereas electronic 1st curtain or mechanical shutter settings allow you to go to 30 seconds. Just the nature of the beast...

    • @fromquake
      @fromquake Рік тому +1

      Really? That’s interesting. The R6 II goes to 30” in electronic or mechanical. Looks like the R6 MKI only does .5”. That could probably be a firmware fix on canon’s end, since the sensor readout shouldn’t be a bottleneck like on the R6, but they will probably hold it for the MKII version.

      I addition to the limit of 0.5 seconds, in electric shutter mode, files are only captured in 12 bit. You have to use the other 2 shutter modes to capture 14 bit files.

      Yeah a lot of mirrorless cameras limited the low end shutter speed on electronic shutter. Gotta use mechanical shutter. 😊

      Yep. This is it. Go electronic first curtain if you need longer exposures. Also… electronic shutter only gives you 12bit raw files, vs elec 1st curtain and mechanical are proper 14bit raw files.

      That's interesting. I predominantly use ES on my X-T2 and switch only to mechanical shutter where circumstances dictate it (flash sync, rolling shutter problems etc). I wonder if there's a trade off in resolution for this strategy?

    If Chris has focus bracketing turned on, that might be why the R5 won't let him set an shutter speed longer than 1/2 second. Either that or he's using electronic shutter. If he switches to mechanical shutter or electronic first curtain shutter he'll be fine up to 30 seconds or use bulb mode for exposures longer than 30 seconds. (The R5 has a timer that can be set for bulb mode.)

    Not forced ) and great teaching moments .
    1) R5 slow shutter issue answered many times - get it to mechanical or first curtain
    2) Chris - get an L-bracket and stop hanging your vertices off the ball head and changing the parallax (?) on panoramic shots and weight shift . I have two Three Legged Thing L brackets for my R/R5/R7 and the RRS one for my R3 .
    Gavin - keep it up - love the collection of characters - you found Ben from New Jersey who shoots Leica ! - now you just need to find a Pentax K1 shooter .
    Awesomeness exemplified and here’s to more great fun .

    @5:06 The Canon R5 arbitrarily limits the electronic shutter to 0.5s. It gets right in the way of focus-stacking, amongst other things. Either use manual shutter and forego the fancy drive-modes, or... as I did, send it back.

    • @tamasnemeth2161

      Another small issue with R5 ES is that the raw file is 12 bits only, which is not really good for landscape shots. As I shoot mostly wildlife with my R5, I use the ES mode extensively, but I wouldn't do it for landscape captures. When I happen to have only my canon with me during a landscape opportunity, I always switch to other shutter mode to gain additional 2 bits.

    • @tamasnemeth2161
      @tamasnemeth2161 Рік тому

      Yes, it is very annoying that the user cannot control the shutter mode for focus stacking. Especially for product photographers using flashes it renders the camera useless.

    • @spodzone
      @spodzone Рік тому

      @@tamasnemeth2161 Oh dear. I wasn't aware that the bit-depth varied with shutter type; however I do know that it drops from 13 to 12-bit in H+ burst mode.
      I got the R5 on the assumption that it was their answer to the A7r3 (FF, 42-45MP). Not when Canon can't maintain full sensor-readout in burst mode, it isn't...

    • @spodzone
      @spodzone Рік тому

      @@tamasnemeth2161 Agreed it'll be a pain for product photography. It's also a pain for landscape - sometimes I might want to combine a 6-stop ND for long exposure with a focus-stack for DoF. Oh, and it leaves the focus beyond infinity at the end of a stack rather than resetting to where it started, but I digress...
      Suffice it to say I'm not kidding when I say I put money where mouth/keyboard is and rejected the R5 ASAP.

      There is no such setting in the R5 as focus stacking.
      There is however a setting called focus bracketing.
      I can say categorically having it turned off does not fix the 1/2 second exposure limiter in normal operational modes.

    By way of an enquiry... at around the 14:30min mark (Ben's compositional/light woes)... I know it would be a pain, but could he not merely fix his tripod, taking a couple of notes with each turn made for each separate pano shot (firstly with the background lit)... then repeat approximately the exact same shots with the rock in the foreground, lit or shadowed (as and when it looks better during the day), then combine them all together later on in post?
    I know the post processing might ruin the artistic side for a talented true e-Leicist (kidding), but is there a reason why someone would not do that, barring the faff?
    When's Hardcastle Towers returning?
    Kind regards and much respect.
