On Australia Day this year I spent the day on the James Craig sailing ship, Australia's largest surviving sailing ship from the late 1800s. The crew are all volunteers, and at times during the day when they started pulling the lines to hoist the sails I happened to be at the right place at the right time to assist the crew with the lines, and it was great to be allowed to get hands on with the sailing experience, rather than being told to get out of the crew's way. My height and build came in handy to help the crew with getting the gangplank and stairs down and put in place when we docked at Circular Quay during the day for about 2 hours. And I had the crew in stitches by insisting they talk like 1800s sailors and sing old shanties. Since I knew this one from beginning to end, I led and got the crew all involved. Not long after had about 6 crew members separately coming up to me trying to convince me to sign up to be a volunteer on the ship for whenever it goes out on the water - public holidays, or even on trips where it goes out on open sea to Tasmania or New Zealand (it was recently in Tasmania for a heritage sailing ship event). They could see I genuinely wanted to be there and get hands on with assisting when needed (and no it wasnt like one of those stupid things where they ask for a volunteer from the audience and everyone desperately shoves their hands up in the air, most of the others on board were just there because they like "old timey ships" but not genuinely interested in assisting the crew, just wanting to sit and get plonked. Have since done the necessary courses and am now a member of that crew, not bad considering it has all happened since January 26 this year. Didnt realize this was something I would like to be a part of until I was on the ship on Australia Day and the crew worked on convincing me to join

I'll sing you a song 'o' the fish 'o' the sea
Way hey blow the man down
Come all ye young sailormen listen to me
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Now first came the herrings saying I'm king 'o' the seas
Way hey blow the man down
He jumped on the poop, oh the captain I'll be
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Next came the flat fish they call him a skate
Way hey blow the man down
If yeel be the captain well den I'm the mate
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Next came the hake he was black as a rook
Way hey blow the man down
Says he I'm no sailor I'll ship as the cook
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Next came the shark with his two rows of teeth
Way hey blow the man down
Cook mind you the cabbage and I'll mind the beef
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Then came the eel with his slippery tail
Way hey blow the man down
He climbed up aloft and he cast off each sail
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Then came the mackerel with his pretty stripped back
Way hey blow the man down
He hauled off his sheath and he boarded each tack
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Then came the whale the biggest in the sea
Way hey blow the man down
Shouting haul in your head sheets now hellums a lee
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Then came the sprat he was smallest of all
Way hey blow the man down
He jumped on the poop pry and main tops aye ho
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
Blow the man down bullies, blow the man down
Way hey blow the man down
Blow the man down bullies, blow the man down
Oh give us some time to blow the man down
I don't understand the whale and sprat parts
Anybody here older than Spongebob and older than vsauce... And even OLDER THAN THE INTERNET?!
Still, lively old songs carry on.
But what the hell, I still think it's weird that I was taught 1800s sea shanties as a city kid in the 1970s!
I LOVE that good songs prevail and carry on, but it's still weird. 2020.
from the word "look"
Randomly this popped into my head . So hear I am lol
It's incredible how Vsauce can unite people from all over the world in a random youtube video.
Which vsauce video?

Once heard from the Big Bang Theory long ago today I was watching Dungeons And Dragons Honour Among Thieves and then their song kept me wondering like Sheldon Earworm episode I stumbled upon here...
Brilliant fun.
Cripps rocking it on the harmonica.

Same, that is the only reason I know of this song.

In modern terms, blow the man takes on a whole new meaning hahaha.
In old versions,it does mean what you think, with lyrics about bullies(English sailors)meeting milkmaids or ‘ladies’ and warning not to be totally ‘depleted’, to concentrate on sailing!😂

I miss the little nautical details in SpongeBob to give off the feeling that what you are watching is set in the sea.
