@@willmartin7293 Not exactly... The soldiers at the Fort were NOT allowed to leave with their ammo. They had guns sure, but couldn't fire them.. Plus there was a massacre of the wounded inside the fort unless I'm confusing this with another. Excellent scene though. If people are watching hollyweird movies for historical accuracy though, they're looking in the wrong place :)
Edit: I'm reasonably sure about the massacre of the wounded at FWH. It's probably the 'inspiration' for the story Mel Gibson tells about Fort Wilderness in The Patriot.

@@mnelson1979 I agree with you that historical accounts of the surrender agreement required the British troops to vacate the fort without any ammo. I meant my comment to address the massacre of the British troops and colonial militia along with their dependents once they were a good distance from the French forces. I also read that this betrayal of the surrender terms negated the observance of the traditional rules of European warfare in the Colonies, and that is why subsequent battles between the French and British along with their Indian allies during this war were much more barbaric.

    • @mnelson1979

@@willmartin7293 Yeah, and the other major inaccuracy of that portrayal was Monroe getting killed. He lived for a few years and died from what we might call today a stroke that people believed was due to the stress of Webb's cowardice in not sending help to Fort William Henry.
Webb was also ultimately relieved of command because of his inaction.
It's not clear by any historical record if Montcalm engineered the native's attack (as was heavily implied in the movie with his speech to Magwa) but he was certainly aware of it and did little at all to protect the British from the massacre. The French were 'supposed' to provide some sort of escort, which they did but that escort did largely nothing to stop the massacre of the wounded men and women left at the fort, or the encampment outside the fort after the British relinquished it, or on the march to Fort Edwards.

I think it's a gen-Z thing. Their over-reliance on cellphone culture effectively spoils them for movies made prior to around 1995 when effects-heavy movies started to replace the build-up of tension/suspense, monumental sets, and practical effects that were the hallmark of older films. I think it's really quite sad, as I fear it makes it that much more difficult for them to follow complex trains of thought and to think deeply about issues.

Biss, the reason why they fought the way they did, lined up and firing all at once, was because of the type of weapons they had. They were using muskets which had a smooth bore which means they had no riflling in the barrels. Rifling is a series of spiral grooves along the inside of a gun barrel that causes the bullet to spin as it moves thru the barrel and out into the air. This spinning action makes the bullet fly farther and be much more accurate than guns without rifling, like the muskets the soldiers in this movie are using. Without rifling the muskets are very inaccurate and the large, round ammo they use didn't help matters either. The basic tactic was to have one line of soldiers in front all fire at once so that there was a line of bullets heading towards the enemy. By firing en masse, in the direction of the enemy line (and not at any one particular enemy) you were more likely to at least hit something. Then when the first line was reloading the next line would fire and so on.

I was a little disappointed with M's response but had an epiphany a short time ago. I realized that the story-telling angle in "Dances" and "Mohicans" are polar opposites. "Dances" is essentially a "chick flick". The protagonist is a sensitive figure who woos the lost woman and seeks to bring harmony between the white and indigenous worlds. "Mohicans" is as male as it gets. It's about conflict and honor. Magua is fueled by a desire for revenge for his lost family. There is a battle in the middle of nowhere between two armies led by chivalrous commanders. You easily replace the female lead with a sausage and it would not change anything. I had seen both movies and remembered how unimpressed I was with "Dances". Now I know why.

There's also an important difference this story (a historical fiction based on true events) & Dances with Wolves (a fiction set in a historic period), in that the story here is guided by real circumstances, & as such more closely reflects true human & political interactions, while DwW bears greater resemblance to a fantasy movie that draws inspiration from our world. That gave it a lot more freedom to tug on various heartstrings & instinctual sympathies without getting bogged down in the threads of the larger context that tug on it.
There's also the fact that The Last of the Mohicans is the 2nd book in a series, so it inherently hints at that larger context as well.
Coming into this story without any real grasp of the setting & general details puts one at a major disadvantage, just as much as someone who had never heard of WWII would miss a Lot about Saving Private Ryan on their first watch through.

The Last of the Mohicans is one of a series of 5 books, following the life of the main character, Natty Bumppo. The group is titled, The Leatherstocking Tales. They are, The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mochicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. That is the chronology of the story, though the installments were written in a different order. Natty is known as Leatherstocking, Hawkeye, Le Longue Carabine, and Pathfinder.
In the book, Duncan pursues Alice. Uncas pursues Cora. In the film you hear Cora referred to as "the dark one". That is not because of her hair. Cora is mulatto, being the result of her father's posting in the Carribean.

A more violent story than Dances with Wolves, but superior, in my estimation. I can't imagine things were easy. And maybe it's because I'm more of an Eastern Woodlands kind of person, or because I grew up in Virginia that I am surrounded by the vestiges of our colonial past. More importantly, when I first saw the movie, I did not have any preconceived notions, so I didn't feel "fished in" like you did. I hate that feeling :) Also, I think longer, slower scenes tend to tell us something more deeply, let the story "sink in". Perhaps this is an attention span difference that is generational.

The reason that they would fire as a group is because the british and basically all armies at the time were using amooth bore muskets. They were inaccurate after about 50 yards so they used the principal of accuracy thru volume. Put a wall of lead out and it has a better chance of hitting someone. The reason they used smoot bore muskets was because they were faster to reload than a rifle and cheaper to produce.

A British soldier of the time could load and fire his musket about 3 times per minute, whereas a rifle often took nearly a minute. Since most engagements on the European continent took place at point-blank range, using the musket made sense. In heavily wooded North America, against an enemy accustomed to raids and ambush, the normal European tactics didn’t work as well. The European pioneers, largely Ulster Scots, also came from a tradition of raid and ambush dating back 500 years to the border of Scotland and England, then later Northern Ireland. These were the folks that made up much of the militia and they were much better suited to the native type warfare.

The Seven Years War of the 1750's/60's (called the French and Indian War in the US) was, in fact a world war with all the major European powers fighting in Europe itself and globally in their colonies. Aside from the French and English, the Prussians, the Russian Empire, Sweden, Portugal, the Spanish Empire and the Austrian Empire were all fighting each other. The conflict was fought in the Caribbean, South America, India, Africa and in the Pacific---wherever the European kingdoms had set up trade/colonial interests and on the seas everywhere their ships travelled. Considering it was the age of wooden sailing ships and gunpowder, it was amazingly bloody conflict. The English came out ahead: The French had to give up Canada and India, and their possessions in the Caribbean were strengthened--the British Royal Navy emerged as the defining worldwide military force. It is unknown how many deaths there were over the 7 years of conflict, but a reasonable estimate was certainly over a half million. In the 13 English Colonies in North America, the Royal government levied what were regarded as overly burdensome taxes to pay for the war, and it was a direct cause of the American Revolution in the following decade

This war happened right before the American Revolution. Some people take this period of war as the world's first real world war. The part of it that happened in North America is generally referred to as "The French and Indian War." The Seven Years War, of which this is just the North American part, is also sometimes considered to be a part of the Second Hundred Years War. Anyway, the comment in the movie that "The whole world is on fire" seems appropriate. People who don't know history don't know how much people suffered in the past. "The Last of the Mohicans" was published in 1826, so still within the time frame where people might have remembered what really happened in the lives of those people, in that time.

Fun story: my rural Wisconsin high school band director BY EAR arranged a medley of the music for our concert band (orchestra minus strings, plus saxophones, and more of the other woodwinds and brass). She was and is amazingly talented! If she’d wanted to deal with copyright and publishers she could have gotten it published for other bands to play.

Fire!" and after the "Aim!" and just before the "Fire" they all ducked behind the trees. All the English fired and missed then had to stand in the open for the 20 seconds or before they could all reload. The Natives would then be able to stand in the open and individually fire whenever they reloaded and not have to worry about return fire.

Dances With Wolves takes place in the "Old West," which is much later and takes place on the Plains far to the West of this movie. This is roughly in New York, and that's roughly in Kansas and Colorado. No redcoats in the Old West. Just sometimes blues and greys, natives, and folks in dustier clothes out for themselves.

There have been terrible wars between the British colonists and various native American tribes. Look up King Philip's War which revolved into nothing short of a mutual attempt at genocide. There's a reason why multiple and Algonquin tribes have towns in New England named after them but are them themselves extinct. Ironically, this isn't true for the Mohicans. Likewise, resource wars between the native American tribes led to some being exterminated.
The British and American colonists would win the French and Indian War/ North American sphere of the Seven Years War , resulting in the conquest of New France by the British. This would lead to the British essentially setting a line of settlement for colonies in North America to prevent future Wars with native tribes. Between the loss of the threat of the French, a large War debt which would result in taxation from London, the fears about Canadian Catholics, and resentment over the line of proclamation, the American colonies would drift. Apart from the British. This the French and Indian War ended in 1763 and the American revolutionary War began in 1775.

Especially when it came to learn history of tribes living on the East coast & the Plains tribes. I like how you wanted the main story revolving around a Mohican narrative =) This was written a long time ago by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826. It was adapted into a screenplay & movie in 1936, when Director Michael Mann was watching it as a young kid, the tragic death of Uncas & Alice in the movie stayed with him. Michael Mann is known for his influential crime movies, most notably HEAT(1995) which I definitely recommend 👌 Last of the Mohicans was something different & a movie he's been wanting to make for awhile. I watched it really young, I would borrow the VHS 📼 from relatives from time to time Lol
Highly recommend a movie called THUNDERHEART w/ Val Kilmer, Graham Greene, & the late greats Sam Shepherd & Fred Ward. A movie that revolves around real events in American History in America's poorest Reservation, Pine Ridge. You will recognize Graham Greene, he played "Kicking Bird" on Dances With Wolves
Hope to see you react to more Michael Mann movies 👍 some of the movies he's made, are about real people & events in American History. Like the movies, Ali(2001), The Insider(1999), Public Enemies (2009)
But Definitely put the greatest crime Saga ever made on your list, HEAT(1995) Great Cast & soundtrack 👌 Michael Mann's best.

I enjoy the movie enough, but really it is the music of this movie that I remember most and still listen to from time to time.

I was in North Carolina when they made this movie just outside of Boone, North Carolina. The story is a love story about different backgrounds.

Sorry you didn’t find this as great as some of your subscribers, I have suggested this numerous times 🙂… This is probably my favorite movie, at least in the number of times I’ve watched it, I really enjoy the cinematography, the locations they shot at were so beautifully executed, it felt like you were in 17th century America…:) The novel this was adapted from and you were talking about almost reading is considered America’s first great novel, written long ago. You are correct in that it can be slow at times. Thanks for the honest reaction..:)

The movie depicts the end of the bloodline… and also takes the title from the classic book by James Fenimore Cooper. cinematically/cinematographically I think it’s a masterpiece.
No pitchforks though! You should check out the filmographies of Daniel Day-Lewis and Wes Studi - both are impressive! Actually Wes Studi was in Dances with Wolves so you’ve started already 😁
Daniel Day-Lewis (an English actor… was thinking that when you mentioned his character’s appearance, prior to learning he’s adopted) has done a lot of period pieces - but a lot of variety regarding the time and place

I respected it, yet was not blown away, it took the 3rd viewing to love it.

You don't have to be sorry. This was YOUR rating, not mine. I agree that the beginning is very slow. If you were not captured by the cinematography, the beauty of the country, and the closeness of the people to the land, then it wasn't for you. To me the scene that was fundamental for getting the feeling of this film was when our three heroes visited the cabin of the family at the beginning. This told us so much about ALL the characters and their way of life. I think one reason why I like it so much was that I got to see it in a theater. The cinematography was a big part of this film, and that rarely comes across on a small computer monitor. I've spent a little bit of time in the mountainous areas of Transylvania outside of Cluj. The scenery in some parts is a bit similar.
The way these people lived was much more primitive than the white people in Dances with Wolves. This was more than a century before. This was before the United States was even a country. They would declare themselves independent of the British about 20 years later. Dances with Wolves was during our Civil War in the 1860s not before the Revolutionary War in the 1770s. There were no trains or roads, and definitely not many big cities. The French, after helping the Americans earn independence, defended Eastern Canada from the British - Quebec, Montreal, etc. This is why Canada is bi-lingual.
The other thing that probably was hard to get when you are surrounded by modern technology was the performance of Daniel Day Lewis. He's known as being one of the most "Method" actors out there. If I remember, he spent a lot of time before filming living as his character in the wilderness. He does that with all of his roles. He's known for "becoming" his characters.
Another thing that's hard with this movie is all the different Native tribes. As you noted there were a couple in Dances with Wolves. In this movie there were 3 primary tribes: the Mohawks, Huron and Mohicans. And there were at least 4 more mentioned in passing. I was impressed by how closely you were able to follow much of the very confusing list of characters and their backgrounds, but you did miss a couple things that were important. I think that's another reason why you weren't able to get into the plot and immersed in the characters.
All in all, I love your reactions! My favorite is Up! When you react it's always authentic. You give us what you got. That's all I ask. 😘

I grew up in the country side surrounded my mountains my grandma baking bread in the outside oven, my dad is a hunter we work the land I will be honest with you forest and mountain do not really surprise me or impress me as I see them all the time !
The movie had great moments but for me It was a bad start the title let me think the movie was about something else but not a romance .
I understand this movie is so dear to peoples hard but so is my channel and I want to be true to it to ! I will not like every movie I react to BUT i will watch it and treat it with respect

The story is based on The Deerslayer, an 1841 novel somewhat based on legendary American frontiersmen who led the way in the settling the United States. That novel is considered to be an expression of the formation of the American character. Maybe it takes a better understanding of it's importance to appreciate the story. There is still more to a movie than the story and I'd say this is still a pretty good movie for other reasons but I thought you should know the importance of this story to generations of Americans.

Wes Studi, who plays Magua (the Huron pretending to be a Mohican) here, also played the "Toughest Pawnee" (that was his character name) in the battle between the Sioux and Pawnee in Dances With Wolves. Altogether, he has 114 IMDb acting credits.

Early muskets were inaccurate and slow to load. They lined up and all fired at once to maximize their collective firepower and have the best chance of hitting. It wasn’t until much later that accuracy and speed made it less necessary…not to mention the evolution of field artillery.

Nathaniel was the child of white parents. He was adopted by Chingachcook and grew up among Delaware Indians. So he is 100% white, but is also a member of Chingachcook's tribe.
