    To me, it's difficult to say that Lucian is a villain. Yes he is against Selene in the beginning, but he is fighting to restore the Lycans and bring down the vampires a peg or 5. If anything he is a sympathetic villain. The real villains in my mind is Kraven and Viktor...

      Lucian isn't really the Villain at all, you are right that Viktor and Kraven are, the only reason it even looks like Lucian is, is because it's from Selene's pov and she was brainwashed by Viktor (unless he was letting Singe kill the Corvin's, then he's a fallen one)

      Lucian may be a bit of an antagonist figure for much of the film, but that doesn’t technically make him a villain. The distinction basically lies in a given character’s intentions and actions in relation to the protagonist. Spending time as an opposing force pushes one toward an antagonistic position, but as Lucian did not have malicious intent-instead only hurting those who had enacted countless cruelties and violences upon himself and his kind for many centuries, and trying to end the painful conflict and tyranny-Lucian was not inherently villainous. He essentially sought peace and unity through crossing the bloodlines. Basically a Romeo and Juliet type of thing, had Romeo and Juliet been emotionally mature and stable enough to navigate their challenges without impetuously resorting to manslaughter/murder (Romeo) and suicide (Romeo and Juliet both). (I would say something about spoilers, but that story is around 700 years old, and I imagine most of us learned it in school. If anyone watching this video is too young to know Romeo and Juliet, they’re too young to be watching a movie like this. And yes, I am aware of what I just implied about suicide. Mental health disorders or not, most people don’t self-terminate when they’re in control of their emotions.) Compare this to the intentions and actions of the ruling vampires-the sadistic legacy of enslavement, torture, persecution, genocide, and hard telling what else-and the contrast is quite clear. Hell, Lucian’s scarcely any more villainous than Selene, who was unknowingly aiding in such a dark and depraved conquest until she finally learned the truth. (On that note, you could maybe even argue that this antagonist is *less* villainous than our protagonist. I’m not calling Selene a villain, but technically her hands are far from clean because of who she served for so long, and the things she likely did in service to her dark overlords.)
      Conclusion: Lucian was not a villain.

    I love the biological aspect of this series! in so many vampire/werewolf movies their origins are tied to magic or other supernatural forces. This series did a great job in rooting the vampire & lycans' history, anatomy & abilities in a more (lack of a better term) "realistic" sense, in that they appear as something akin to a newly discovered species rather than a mystery that defies natural law.

      @@dre3k78 There are species that can revert to a baby-like state and grow up all over again repeatedly and are therefore biologically immortal meaning they can't die from age but can still die to predators. It's not unrealistic for a species to remain the same age especially with the buffed healing factor. Also if we consider the possibility that the virus changed their cells to function like a virus then they would be immune to aging since viruses don't age in the same way biological matter does since it uses other hosts to reproduce which could also explain the need for blood, blood being the host material to fuel their sustained and constant cellular division.

    To be fair, there really isn't one version of vampires. I've seen versions where they can be pregnant and be born as vampires (Blade for example), where they walk in the sun (Hammer Horror - sometimes), where they only be hurt by fire, where they're immune to fire, all sorts. So saying they're not true to vampire lore is perhaps a little unfair 🙂

    • @unclebounce1495
      @unclebounce1495 4 місяці тому +2

      That's just a very recently modern adaptation that makes very little sense. Mostly invented by people who want their cake and to eat it too. They also want to let them walk in the sunlight, not be dead or cold, have reflections, be fully vibrantly alive, have zero vulnerabilities or supernatural hindrances, so on. "Let's make something very different with specific drawbacks... but let's do away with the differences and remove the drawbacks so they're completely humanized. Yay, so unique!" Sooo.... it's just a human who doesn't age. gotcha. very... creative... (not) So if they have pointy teeth, they're a vampire, if they have pointy ears they're an elf... and the melodrama and over-exaggerated combat sequences stays the same for both.

    • @stephenhumphreys9149
      @stephenhumphreys9149 4 місяці тому +9

      @@unclebounce1495 Not really a modern thing. Dracula was not harmed by sunlight, just weakened. Carmilla, which was written even earlier than Dracula, also had their vampire unharmed by sunlight. The Hammer Horror films were in the seventies, so even those are half a century old now. To quote 'Vampedia', "In fact, the weakness to sunlight is a modern addition to vampire folklore and literature, which only goes back to the German film Nosferatu, making it one of the newer additions to the vampire lore." Not having a reflection seems to have started in Dracula. Point being that there really isn't much consistency with vampire lore in general.

      @@stephenhumphreys9149 I'm well aware of vampire history and the variations in different cultures. That's irrelevant and quite pathetic of you. You completely ignored the point of my comment to make some inane comment about a technicality. In every culture, the vampire is very much so inhuman. Most are more demonic or spiritual than any modern adaptation. Dracula is probably the most humanized version of non-modern mythological vampire, and it is treated very much so as an inhuman creature. Sunlight is not the significant factor. Yes, older versions are even more inhuman. That's the point. The point I made is they want to utilize a "different creature" as an element or character in a story but do not want the drawbacks and restrictions of having to actually treat them differently in the story. it's immature and lazy storytelling. It's superficial distinction and pointless. These "vampires" could just be the humans in the matrix, could be a goth version of super girl and super man, could be modernized legolas elves (Hellboy 2 did that and made them more distinct than most modern vampires), could be any pointlessly different "creature" that is just a lazily reskinned human. "humans with a disease." Riiight. Well real human diseases (autism, addictions, personality disorders, etc.) are weirder and more distinct than this "special" disease. It's the lite version of mythology. It's fake mythology. If they didn't tell you they were different creatures by using a different name, they'd be completely interchangeable with any other "cool hollywood figure" of modern times. There's nothing wrong with making your own adaptation. There IS something wrong when the distinction is so mild and pointless it might as well not be there. This is Fast and the furious with guns. matrix with fangs (that's it, nothing more). Hot topic version of legolas or Heroes or X-men - x-men usually have more distinction. Night of the living dead at turbo speed except they're not dead and the "terrible disease" lets them act completely normal with no real affect on human behavior. Vegans are weirder than most modern vampires. They're just humans with a different name and a cool superhuman power of some sort (fill in the blank). That's the problem. Lazy and immature creature design. There is no creation. It's just hissing like pissy cats and watching red liquid flow through IV tubes. Otherwise, "immortal humans" through and through. Maybe they're the last of the Dunedain, blessed with long life. lol Hopefully that's enough examples to get the point across now. Shyt creature design of Mr. Potato head version of just "ageless human" by another name, no more depth or thought than that.

      @stephenhumphreys9149 4 місяці тому +7

      @@unclebounce1495 Wow, that was pretty hostile! I was just trying to make a counterpoint as your point started with you saying that something - you didn't specify what - was 'a very modern adaptation', and I just pointed out some examples of what I had been talking about that were not particularly modern. Do some stories take the humanisation of vampires too far? Yes, obviously - the disease take isn't one I'm particularly fond of either, for example. But saying that all modern vampire stories (I'll assume you meant modern as in 'from when vampire literature first appeared', as the vampires in literature pretty much started like this) are lazy because they humanise something which in many cultures aren't particularly complicated creatures also seems a pretty basic take on things. After all, vampires have almost certainly become as popular as they are because they're so close to human, not in spite of it.
      I think that the point you're trying to make is that vampires as protagonists are sometimes treated too much like superheroes with a dietary problem, and there's some truth in that - I would definitely agree that vampires as antagonists are more interesting because by necessity you generally have to tone down the monstrous things they do if they're the 'hero' of your story as opposed to the villain.

The drinking of vampire blood to create vampires is from the Dracula origin stories (not all vampire stories have the same rules/origins. A large percentage of them don't (Twilight, Byzantium, From Dusk Till Dawn, etc.)). Pregnancy is rare in vampire movies, but they do happen (Twilight). They tend to be an exception or special cases.

No matter how fast the car, the running stuntman will always overtake the car. Genius. Stuntman walking on stilts with the knees backwards under the Lycan suit. The twist… Lucian is the hero. The sequel Underworld: Evolution ranks up there with AlienS, and T2: Judgement Day, expanding on the original with a bigger budget! The third sequel is a prequel, Lucian’s origin story, and the darkest in the franchise. The lore for Underworld is explained. It is not the ‘classic’ story of vampires, Biss. Michael would have been a MORE powerful hybrid had it been Amelia’s blood with Lucian’s bite. I have all five films in my DVD collection. I for one, love the whole franchise. The historical Corvinus was Hungarian, not Romanian. The name probably refers to Matthias Corvinus, who was King of Hungary in the mid-15th Century. Like his contemporary Vlad Tepes, he fought against the Turks, and the two were sometimes allies and sometime enemies.
    When it comes to vampire legend, the other famous Hungarian is Elizabeth Bathory who was accused of killing young peasant women and bathing in their blood to maintain her youth. Fictional vampire lineages include the names Orlok, from F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, "Noferatu," an unlicensed adaption of "Dracula," in which the name was used to avoid copyright problems with Bram Stoker, as well as the name Karnstein, which was the surname of the lesbian vampire Carmilla, from the novel of the same name by Sheridan Le Fanu, which actually predated the publication of Stoker's "Dracula" by around 25 years.

      Matei Corvin, was Romanian, descended from Ioan de Hunedoara. He Latinized his surname to be more easily accepted by the Hungarian nobility. Interestingly, he went so far as to deny his Romanian origins, starting to hate everything Romanian, one of the reasons for the imprisonment of Vlad III Dragulia (the Impaler).

    • @UmbraFulgur
      @UmbraFulgur 4 місяці тому

      Carmilla and Elizabeth Bathory are one and the same person. Those legends aren't really legends, by the way. More than 80 skeletons that were once young girls were found there. Draw your own conclusions.
      Not "Noferatu", but "Nosferatu", and the origins are Greek on the Latin branch.
      I don't know where you copied from, but you copied badly. You have a 3 in history, because you didn't study, a 3 in genealogy, for the same reason, and a 2 in philology for copying from your colleague.

    • @hanng1242
      @hanng1242 4 місяці тому

      @@UmbraFulgur Yes, "Noferatu" was a typo. It is good that you caught it because the word is so obscure that anyone reading the comment surely would have been confused but for your correction. Also, was in love with Beckinsale after that movie, how beautiful she is.
