@@darshanr2369 Raph Ravenscroft, who sadly died a few years ago, played on the Gerry Rafferty original. I suspect Matteo meant the sax player on this version.

The actual sax player was not filmed, hence someone else sat in and hid his face.

I still remember the day when I first heard Baker Street. It's one of those songs that has it all, it knocks you off your feet, you can't escape - no matter how fast you run.

This is absolutely bloody amazing! I've tried finding words for that solo at the end. There aren't any. I teach music for a living; this beast is getting shared when we eventually return to school. I love a good cover, but this is easily one of the finest I've ever heard. Stunning!

The original is one of my favourite solos, and has to be one of the most "cut-off" solos in history when played on the radio (along with Another Brick in the Wall 🙄) It was good to hear the solo being given 110% on this 👍
Yeah I agree with you completely. I get so angry when the radio cuts off the solo.
The other song that has the solo lopped off for easy listening radio is love hurts by Nazareth, sucks the life right out of the songs.

I know very little about these guys. Badly need to know more. Is Neal's guitar playing seriously underrated? So confused by that. Got to admit, i'm coming back each time just to skip to and replay the solo each time. The whole sound at that point is absolutely amazing.
@@kevinian5528 Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors. The two lead guitarists in his other bands are why he's underrated as a guitarist. He's more of a jack of all trades. Great song-writer, great producer!
He usually played rhythm lines with Spock's Beard while Alan was on leads, too. I remember really liking his Spanish guitar work in the _Beard is Out There_ version of "The Light" though. That video is on UA-cam if you want to find it.

Taking nothing away from Neal it made me appreciate how incredible Gerry Rafferty's voice was, he and Joe Egan were an amazing pair (Stealers Wheel).

Neal is a sneaky good guitar player. There are a lot of great guitar parts on his solo albums that I had assumed were guest players that wound up being him playing.

What an outstanding rendition of “Baker Street” by these guys!! I say it’s better than the original! Tremendous performance by ALL, but the axe-man and the drummer are just killing it! Superb guitar solo’s that reverberate across the galaxy and the drummer has got more moves than Lebron James! I’ve played the drums for over 40 years yet find myself in awe over some of this dudes drum fills and outstanding syncopations!! A 5 STAR winner all the way around. Yes. I thought this version had more going on with every instrument. The recording had more definition, more clarity.
F.i. I could enjoy the great bass lines better.
The downside is the vocals were _not enough_ processed. Not even reverb. I liked the smoky voice that fits the lyrics very well.

I dunno. Surely one of the best songs ever written - an utter classic. The musicianship in this cover is excellent but does it lose something of the despair and hurt of the original? Maybe I'm knit picking, maybe the drums are a little over the top. Still and all, it's pretty darned good.

Portnoy is a great drummer but is overplaying and not serving the song.
I agree. For me the perfect drummer for this reason is someone like Phil Collins, with class but inside the music and not above her.
Baker Street is one of the greatest soft rock songs in history. It is my personal favorite. Two great hook riffs (guitar and, of course, sax) in one song. Awesome lyrics. Hard to top that.
I'm pushing 80, play a little guitar, and I have to say that this is the greatest cover of a great song I've ever heard. The driving beat, the enthusiasm of the players, a great vocal that grabbed onto the meaning of the lyrics and wouldn't let go, and....quite simply...THE BEST cover guitar solo I've ever heard. How can anyone top that? Just plain effing awesome.
Hi Jim......yes indeed the energy and emotion that this version of a classic from the late 70's is beyond awesome. Mike on drums is ballistic, that bass player is ferocious and soft simultaneously, Neal nails the vocals and lead solo 2000's style, and the sax player blows it out of the park!......from George in South Australia.

Jamison Smeltz is the guy in the video, but Jim Hoke is the person playing on the actual recording. Both are terrific players!
For me, it's a rare song where the solo part completely outshines the singer. Over a decade ago at uni a cover band did the song and it was so memorable. The guitar solo at the end of this version is just out of this world. I've been listening to it for the last 20 mins to try and understand it. It's mad!
