They need to make an anthology book about a marine from each major chapter trying to get back to their hobby. They need to finish this battle in time because they can’t miss it this week. The link, each character is playing DND via space zoom with the others. The grim darkness comes when one of the marines forgets his dice. They then have fun and drink, although slowly each member needs to leave, the black Templar has to pray, the ultra marine has organisation issue, the salamander has dinner with his parents, the space wolves get attacked, a few other need to train for battle. It ends with a timer counting down for the next session. The DM is secretly a thousand sons successor because they’re fucking needs.
The Salamanders are also famous weapon smiths & artisans, who build cool weapons or improve their armor or create various artworks like sculptures etc. And the Imperial Fists spend lots of time, building various infrastructure on the worlds they conquered. Not just fortifications, but also bridges, roads etc. etc. The Iron Hands build and/or repair all types of machinery/vehicles or go looking for lost tech from the Dark Age of Technology. The White Scars write poetry, do calligraphy, train & hunt with falcons and of course tune & race their bikes. The Blood Angels also write poetry, make sculptures, paintings and engage in other artistry. The Space Wolves are known for having big feasts where they not just eat & drink, but also sing songs and tell the stories of their fallen brothers & Leman Russ in the form of sagas, remembering their victories but also their defeats, so that they learn from them. Sometimes they even wake up Bjorn the Fellhanded, to tell the Neophytes stories from the time of the Great Crusade, Horus Heresy and when he served Leman Russ & the Allfather.

One of my favorite Night Lords in 30k and this was before they turned traitor . @@88thdeathkoregrenadier68 please, suicide charge the death guard, it’ll be a wonderful experience. almost as wonderful as spending a night with an emperors children.
I wonder if any Astartes ever just walk around for a bit, find a spot, and sit down to contemplate things. I can imagine a space marine sitting on a ledge watching a flock of birds or some other animal and then thinking to itself "What if I just fell to my death... What the fuck? why did I think that?"
There's several scenes in the Blood Angel books where Dante just stands on the walls of their fortress monastery, reminiscing on the past, contemplating the future, watching the sun set over the red sands and salt flats.
I heard of a story where a marine was on guard duty and bored, so he started calculating if he can survive the fall off the high tower he was on. His result was: fine with armor, heavily injured without. They do get weird ideas at times is what I'm saying.
In my off time, I love reading up on old strategies, when they go uncovered. When that doesn't happen, however, I make a mix between artwork and equipment.
I just love the idea of Salamanders going home to spend time with their families. There could be a big party celebrating a recruit finally making it into the Astartes with a big cake (that's on fire), occasionally visiting their aging parents and maturing nieces and nephews, until finally spending time with their extended family. A distant nephew might even make it as an Astartes, inspired by his big great uncle who taught him how to make an eldar flayer out of scrap metal
@Lucas De Araújo Marques I like to imagine that perturabo and rogal are like the clan leaders And the rest of their legions devolve into racial slurs and insults. Like a cod lobby. Only grim dark.
The Salamanders honestly have the best idea for spare time IMO. There is an episode in the latest Hero Academia season where the captain of a team of marine heroes puts emphasis on having fun in your down time because, as he puts it, heroes need to be reminded of what it is they are fighting for. I can not agree enough with this sentiment, and it is exactly what the green flamer boys are doing. I have a newfound respect for them now.
Space Wolf battle-barges are just giant party buses. When the doors and hatches open on their ships cans fall out. At least 3 mortal crew members uniforms are wrinkled and unkept as a battle brother strolls in late with a grin on his face as he clamps his helmet down. Another battle brother stands in place swaying ever so slightly trying his best to keep it together before a horrible gurgling sound is heard from him and liquid oozes from his helm's vents. For Russ and the All-Father!
I like the idea of the Blood Angels keeping themselves sane and morale high with arts and crafts. Like one whittles a cut little duck, and shows it to his brothers, and they all “Daaaw” over it. Then one of them has like a beautiful painting of Sanguinius in all his glory, and they like “Yas Brother!” Then one of them screams and starts screaming about how they’re Sanguinius, and the rest are like “Oh no.”
´Like all other neophytes, I had been exposed to the myriad avenues of artistic endeavor as part of my legion training. I had composed sonnets and symphonies, painted portraits and scenes from Baal´s history, and moulded clay and stone into heroes of the past. But like all blood angels, one art form called out to me with insistent strength, and for me that art form was glas´ This individual, Jehoel had sustained injuries over his many years of service and lost his arm which had been replaced by a mechanical. He was discouraged that he no longer had the ability to pursue his art form with the same detail and finess as he once did. But Sanguinius the caring father, gave him encouraging words and reminded him that there were those with horrific injurers that continued their respective art form - like Jophial a leviathan dreadnought that worked tirelessly at his marble from within his sarcophagus. In the short story "Better Angels - Scions of the Emperor" P:75 and 80.
The ultra marines sit quietly while G goes in-depth on the virtues of a well organized pantry, and emperor dam it stop putting the empty boxes back in the pantry Kevin.
I dont know why, but the idea of Ahruman not going all evil and shit and just settling down for a peaceful life growing grapes is just so damn wholesome. Hell, now I'm imagining him just vanishing one day and everyone panicking, only for someone to stumble on him on a small planet a few decades later and discover that the ungodly popular wines that recently made waves in the Empire came from him.
Some of the Salamanders probably have little brothers and sisters who yell "Big brother!" when they see this 7 ft tall absolute unit stroll up to the house.
I love it. Hate the idea of marines disconnecting from where they came from. After all they had parents and a family, remembering them would help resist chaos
Didn't the emperor's children leave the siege of terra specifically to have "free time" by turning the civilian population into drugs and then snorting them in giant lined across the earth while riding jetbikes? I'm sure doomrider approves.
The Blood Angels are supposed to represent the Renaissance, so that makes sense (Ultra Marines - Rome, Black templar - The Crusades/Knights templar, Dark Angels - Monks, Space Wolves - Vikings etc) PS: I'm not sure what the Imperial Fists are supposed to be though. Any ideas?
I've heard people say they're based on the Prussians or Germanic warriors in general with their emphasis on strict fire discipline and expertise with their basic bolters, unit names like "Huscarl" and character names like "Sigismund," "Fafnir," and successor chapters like the Black Templars which are most like the Germanic Knights Teutonic.
In "Legacy of Caliban" it's showed that in their free time, the regular Dark Angels like to joust and engage in duels. The ravenwing tend to their personal steeds like knights of old except it's motorcycles and land speeders instead of horses. No idea what the Deathwing do but knowing Belial they don't have much time to themselves. The inner circle in general likes plotting and hunting fallens. And Asmodai.......... Yeah, I think there's still a few fallens in the dungeon for him to play with (dude have his own tools and all)
I imagine what Salamander free time looks like is sitting around a campfire telling stories and eating Smores, and deathguard just have a fun time messing around with their favorite Nurglings and helping out Great Unclean Ones, or growing a garden
Never played a single Warhammer game, never read a single Warhammer book, never played tabletop. I mean I wouldn't mind a number of short stories just about Space Marine free time. 15 in total: 5 Loyalist, 5 Chaos, 5 fan created make it a contest. About the training schedual is it like in the codex 4 hours of sleep 2 hours shooting, or is it AM + PM? Because if it is the latter what about worlds that aren't earth?
It would be based on Terran time, as the timekeeping on Terra is considered a holy standard, although like all things in the 40k universe, this is not universal, even in the Imperium.
For the most part, I would say time is relative, but the standard 24 solar hours would be used most. So 0000 to 2359, military time for simplicity. However some worlds dont have that, like Fenris which has a 20 solar year orbit cycle, and likely has a 20-30 hour day.
5 loyalist blood angels wake up, art class, poem class, combat practice, more art and poems 5 traitor death guard: wakes up, tends their nurglite gardens, play with the nurglings, honor duels with loyalists
I always pictured the Raven Guard as poets like when they aren’t practicing stealth and dirty fighting they write like some Edgar Allen Poe type of crap

The custodes are my top fav when it comes to Warhammer period. Followed by the Salamanders, Lamenters, Sisters of battle and finally the Krieg boys. But when it comes to just plain space marines, as much as I love the Lamenters, Salamanders are just the bets imo. Even if i didn't know anything about them, the story about how the Emperor met the primarch would have been enough for me to put them high in my list. This just adds more reason why i love them.
salamanders: animal crossing (its very wholesome) black Templars: doom (sigy is basically the doom slayer) blood angels: minecraft (they would make really cool builds)
I just got this image in my mind when i read about Ultramarines playing video games i thought about like, after Guilliman had fixed everything in the Imperium him sitting down with his captains and having an Age of Empires multiplayer battle and Guilliman dominating his captains with his IRL logistical skills.
The fact that the Salamanders are the only ones that actually have vacation days tells another story that even in the grim darkness of the universe their still some good bosses who treat their underlings well

I love how this is sort of mirroring the entire miniature wargame hobby. Having a nice and wholesome community activity with tiny paintbrushes to portray the most horrific shit imaginable.
If I recall correctly, the Guardians of the Covenant are similar to the Thousand Sons pre-Heresy in that they are all big-time scholars. They spend a lot of time in their monastery practicing writing and are avid readers of ancient and lengthy tomes, usually (or exclusively?) of the sacred variety.
I imagine "Prayer time" is much like "Study time" for the military or police recruits in real life. You can study if you need to, but it's actually free time... calling it "Study time" just looks more official on an agenda, or more pious in the case of the Imperium.
Theory: Did the Emperor and Malcador create the Primarch's souls? So the number of humans in the Tau empire isn't large and they created a "greater good" demon thing that saved that ship. Compare them to Malcador and the Emperor who are both powerful psykers and also know a lot of warp hacks and exploits. Then there is the possibility of using artefacts to crank their power up to 11. There is one such artefact in a Ciaphas Cain book. It would also explain why the Primarch's are sort of an aspect of the Emperor. Edit: up *to* 11.
MK has a video on the theory that primarch souls are made of ancient warp gods which predate mankind fused to human souls/forms. Honestly the theory makes a lot of sense, and it explains why the soulless daemon primarchs aren't that powerful compared to loyalist primarchs. Though GW could release lore tomorrow that contradicts the theory.
This was so cool!! Fresh take on 40K topics!! From reading most/all the Salamander novels, 7:15 they also spend a good amount of time forging custom weapons and other jewellery/trinkets that are master crafter AF.
The downtime of the Death Guard also tend to vary based on plague company. For example, a Harbingers Vectorum would be more likely to tend to their Poxwalkers, an Inexorable would work on their vehicles inner mechanics, and the Chosen Sons are alchemists always brewing a new plague and improving on old ones.
Probably playing on East Asian stereotypes, Jaghatai Khan encouraged his White Scars sons to practice calligraphy and write poetry as a way to distance themselves from the "savage barbarian" image that Russ and his Space Wolves embrace. If you want to pile on, I imagine the Khans (senior staff of the White Scars) also play a strategy board game known as weiqi (go in Japanese), where a player tries to take more of an opponent's pieces with as few moves as possible. EDIT: Fixed typos and grammar.
The Blood Angels do that kind of stuff too, from masonry, carpentry, making stained glass mosaic telling of deeds done and battles fought. Before being reunited with Sanguinius the 9th had a... Less than favourable reputation, some lore said that they may have joined the two unknown legions in being wiped from the books.
06:15 yeah, this actually seems pretty close to life. A good command is able to prevent/keep shitty things in check. A bad command will throw everything down the gutter by being overly strict and causing disobedience and discord in the ranks. Basically moral.
It is said that one Ultramarine for being one of Guilliman's sons. has a good sense of humor. When asked how it felt to go through the Rubricon, he stated. "It's weird. One moment I'm normal and the next I'm suddenly taller."
One of the first 40k novells 3 decades ago is Spacemarine. About three Necromunda gangers turned - Spacemarine. Being of the Imperial Fist chapter their hobbies include scrimshawing. Yeah Dorn ain't coming back.
This fits very well with "Space Marines are Humanity+" idea. They aren't just mindless automatons that do war. They're people with personal interests, hobbies and dreams. It's just that they have a job to do and their duties have priority over brewing beer or painting landscapes. Space Marines are capable of just as much (if not more) emotion, passion and even cracking jokes as mortal humans. If the Emperor wanted legions of tools without their own personality, he would have commissioned a shitton of servitors...
The emperor has a very obvious love for humanity, to the point where he even crafted a spear for Valdor that was meant to enable him to retain his humanity. He's also commented on art in official works, saying that if you call the wonderful stain glass windows of a church "divine inspiration" you aren't crediting the artist's effort and hard work. But perhaps most telling, he hated being called a god despite being the very definition of a living god. I know some people say that he is secretly planning on becoming a god to fight the chaos gods on even footing, but even if that is his plan it doesn't mean he likes it.
I'm sure pilgrimages might be an option for some citizens. Even in our world, Catholic pilgrimage set up a medieval tourism industry complete with armed security, insurance, a system of credit, and vendors seeking to sell you themed knickknacks. I'd love to see the 40K version of pilgrimage.
to add to what Major Kill has already said, Pre Heresy Lunar Wolves were encouraged to take up useful hobbies in their down time so they would still be useful to the imperium after the war, the best example of this was Garviel Loken who made it a habit to read in his down time, he could be found in the company of Iterator Kyril Sindermann who Garvi shared a close Bond with.
Hey man what would be awesome is for each video of lore you do, if you make a list of suggested books and source material that would be good to check out. Would be so interested to read more about these non combat activities
So now that we know what they did in their sore time, I’m curious to how a Guardsmen’s family reacted/changed, and their life, if one was selected and/or became an Astarties

My greasy neck beard must have been shimmering the right way in the light from my computer screen or something, or the cheeto and dorito dust on my fingers must have left more than a stain on her hand when we both reached for another handful... Who knows?
I just find it sorta charming that out of ALL the things that could stop such a rage, essentially Sanguinius encouraging why some fans take up the painting aspect of the hobby. A lot of military guys take up model painting and other creative outlets to not be AS dependent on stuff like video games, smoking, and drinking to tolerate life. Hey, if you're not supposed to eat them, then why are they so delicious? Hmm?
They need to make an anthology book about a marine from each major chapter trying to get back to their hobby. They need to finish this battle in time because they can’t miss it this week.
The link, each character is playing DND via space zoom with the others.
The grim darkness comes when one of the marines forgets his dice.
They then have fun and drink, although slowly each member needs to leave, the black Templar has to pray, the ultra marine has organisation issue, the salamander has dinner with his parents, the space wolves get attacked, a few other need to train for battle.
It ends with a timer counting down for the next session.

I love that the blood angels can suppress their worst traits by arting things up and making things as beautiful as possible.
Space Wolf battle-barges are just giant party buses. When the doors and hatches open on their ships cans fall out. At least 3 mortal crew members uniforms are wrinkled and unkept as a battle brother strolls in late with a grin on his face as he clamps his helmet down.
5 loyalist blood angels wake up, art class, poem class, combat practice, more art and poems
5 traitor death guard: wakes up, tends their nurglite gardens, play with the nurglings, honor duels with loyalists

If videogames exist I wonder what each chapter would play? I bet the Ultramarines would play like, civilization, Age of Empires, or Total War.
salamanders: animal crossing (its very wholesome)
black Templars: doom (sigy is basically the doom slayer)

I just got this image in my mind when i read about Ultramarines playing video games i thought about like, after Guilliman had fixed everything in the Imperium him sitting down with his captains and having an Age of Empires multiplayer battle and Guilliman dominating his captains with his IRL logistical skills.
The fact that the Salamanders are the only ones that actually have vacation days tells another story that even in the grim darkness of the universe their still some good bosses who treat their underlings well

They aren't just mindless automatons that do war. They're people with personal interests, hobbies and dreams.
It's just that they have a job to do and their duties have priority over brewing beer or painting landscapes.
