      It is. But I think they just use other stuff to tell you it’s 1830s, they still used old timey clothes and brown colors. Anacronistic but it makes the time period clear. Theater is 50% make belief anyways, it’s not like movies were they actually use lost of visuals and costumes and props to make you feel like you ARE in that time and that world. Although to be fair, movies use a lot of historical myths and inaccurate costuming too.

      @@stahppls2293 it seems like they brainlessly applied glitter everywhere and made themselves look androgynous like kids in 2024 because someone told them CABARET was edgy. Will this help with the storytelling? I dont think so. It just looks inappropriate historically.

    • @Nico-Callahan
      @Nico-Callahan 3 місяці тому +37

      @@Mister_Listener while I see your point, I’d like to disagree. The colors in the costumes contrast drastically from what is actually happening outside of Cabaret. This show is obviously during the holocaust, and to fill the space and color and glitter is contrasting exponentially. I think it really adds to the musical, and it makes you think about the way people make their life seem glamorous to ignore the hell that is happening around them.

    • @Mister_Listener
      @Mister_Listener 3 місяці тому +3

      @@Nico-Callahan valid point but that’s kind of a weak device to use for the purposes you describe, and the audience might not perceive anything except inappropriate. Esp since the audience already suspends disbelief that ALL the German characters plus Cliff & Sally speak to one another in English instead of German. Why wouldnt they be dressed in period clothing, is my sticking point. But. I am sure it looks pretty and, maybe there are lighting and costume fx beyond glitter that i am unaware of since i havent seen this version? Such a great discussion, thank you for sharing. Truth is, the piece is SO STRONG it can really sustain a ton of different interpretations. Hugs!

    It presents the same attitude that a 2024 revival of HAiR would project: historical cluelessness. Watching a fresh take on tragic history presented by “kids today” makes me feel somewhat off kilter. This happens in musicals a lot. This one is actually a good example of what “camp” is. Being of German heritage, this is not the same as traditional Germany cabarets. This is westernised. Germans would have a chuckle, at the poor accents to: it’s a hard one to imitate - Germans would not appreciate this cabaret all round. Perhaps westerners would, Hollywood would, enjoy! - but do not try and state it’s the way German cabarets should be or are as it’s simply not true and arrogant.
    It is an Americanised version. Akin to Oktoberfest, you will not find traditional Germans celebrating there anymore, mainly tourists - apart from those Germans working there, they stay at home, as it has been overtaken with loud drunken Americans and Australians etc. If you know the German culture they detest loud and fake people who are over the top. As this cabaret was. American and western audiences enjoy!

      @yucol5661 3 місяці тому +2

      What historical aspect? It’s ww2 Germany, you just need to make it clear it’s Nazis and that’s as much history you need to get across. This is not like a period drama were you want to be immersed in history and enjoy the historical visuals, this is literally about society slipping into violence and people ignoring it with fun. Works with any time period.
      But go look at pictures of the original 1966 production. They really did not go for historical accuracy

      No es una historia feliz. Es más de terror suspenso. Por eso el maquillaje tiene que dar miedo pero no es sangre o oscuro. Fue muy controversial hace 50 años cuando salió porque en esa época los musicales eran casi todos muy felices y optimistas y los temas de la segunda guerra mundial, el sexo y la violencia eran censurados hasta en los países con más libertad. Deberías leer de que es la trama.
