In a time when the world is changing forever, there is one place where everyone can be free…
Welcome to the Kit Kat Club. Home to an intimate and electrifying new production of CABARET. This is Berlin. Relax. Loosen up. Be yourself.
One of the most successful musicals of all time, this new West End production features the songs Wilkommen, Don’t Tell Mama, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money and the title number Cabaret - with Berlin’s famous Kit Kat Club brought to life through the transformation of London’s Playhouse Theatre.
CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff - based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood.
I am obSESSED with Madeline as Sally Bowles. Sally was originally described as a mediocre singer and Madeline stays true to that character while presenting an incredibly captivating performanc. 13/10 for sure
What’s funny is Madeline is actually an AMAZING singer 😂 I love her performance too!
Exactly!!! She’s absolutely amazing!!
Madeline and Callum are both incredible, and delivered bone chilling performances in Cabaret '23. However, I think MB is a bit too young and youthful in appearance to be entirely convincing as the confused about love as well as vulnerable resulting from a lifetime of mediocrity. Brewer is slightly too confident and her naivity more easily excused and understood by her youth.
I actually disagree with that- I'd rather listen to a good singer if I've paid $135 than have it be soo authentic and have bad singing lol
That's an interesting take, but I would direct Sally as a mediocre singer in her cabaret performances and progress her thoughout the play, and have her singing full voice in the non-Cabaret scenes. BTW, am I the only theater kid who thought "Don't tell Mama" was Sally's backstory? So I got confused when the later dialogue contradicted the lyrics of her song.
The Emcee's dance moves constantly snaking into the shape of a swastika (in the first minute or so) are really quite genius!
literally like it’s so clever! the symbolism too makes it completely!
omg i didn’t even notice!!! so cool!!
i mean he’s using fairly standard glamour modeling/beefcake photo poses. there are really only so many shapes you can make with two arms sticking off a torso.i think this says more bout the swastika mirroring the human form than anything about the choreography
@@redpenda99o it’s mirroring a swastika as the play is set in the backdrop of the increasing nazi germany
@@redpenda99o it’s a way of foreshadowing and symbolism
I'v been down a Canaret rabbit hole all day and I think this version of Don't Tell Mama has to be the best in my opinion. I love her mix of innocent and harsh vocals and I really enjoy that she's got a lot of doll like movement that makes her look less like a baby and more like a marionette
Definitely! Very glam rock, it’s channeling Bowie and Queen for me
i gotta say though, Jessie Buckley's studio version is my favourite rendition of the song. she sounds like a woman that's pretending to be all innocent to get mummy's money and having the time of her life doing it.
I agree! I wish they had a professional recording on Apple Music or Spotify. I think her voice sounds AMAZING! Literally perfect, she doesn’t even have a hint of a off note once. I love it
the way callum says “stranger” and “stay” just itch my brain SO good!! he was brilliant in its a sin but the range he has is insane to go from shy, sad screen character to vibrant, eccentric stage character
I was blessed to see the original Broadway with Jil Hayworth and Joel Gray on a high school field trip. To say it was shocking, is the understatement of the century. It is interesting how what was only suggested in the mid-1960's original has now become quite obvious. The play is a masterpiece about intolerance. Well done, and thanks for the reminders.
Oh, to be able to see Joel Grey perform live! That is a story for your grandkids. And it's funny when you listen to his interviews, HE gets excited about the shows he got to see live.
Jill was one of my dearest friends. She was sooo incredible.
Yes the original is actually far more disturbing. Now they just play all the weirdness and it feels laboured. I thought this production was horrible, no subtlety at all and sllooooooow!
Well if you saw the original back in 1966 as I did in Boston during previews, you would agree they have turned this classic into a circus freak show.
@@dommcchesney4066oh yeah cos songs like don’t go, why should i wake up and meeskite really upped the pace of the original production
Insider to that taping: they had to do another take becuase madeline dropped her cigarette too early. The performance was amazing but still. By the time they decided it, the dancers all had changed to their street clothes and had to change back :D but the audience was lucky, we could watch it a second time :)
Wow amazing! I love that!
I’m sure this was live on new years though???
Well, it was broadcast on new years eve but taped on november 17th 2022 ;)
The one in the video is the original or the retake?
@@jaqa3712 it was the retake :)
The little "oop" when he snaps his hat is precious!
Mason Alexander Park does something similar, where they blink a little after snapping the hat, like it hurt. I do wish more Emcee actors did something like Callum and Mason did, it's a nice detail! :D
@@finleyforevermore Mason is absolutely brilliant!!!
@pechako5441 You’re absolutely right! From what I've heard, their Emcee is truly morally grey, which is always fun and fascinating to see in a portrayal!!
obsessed w the way all of the girls are their own artistic objects, theyre not all in similar sexy outfits like the movie or the og broadway version, each character is a different art piece and i LOVE IT !!! theyve even got bald babes, trans women and DEFINATELY gay ppl on here and emcee's like 'yes this is beauty, of course these girls are beautiful !!!!!!!'
It’s also important to the show because all of these groups were greatly targeted by the Nazis so it adds another layer to the show. They shut down the cabarets and shows. Many performers were arrested if they were gay men (or suspected to be). Some lesbians were but they were not prosecuted nearly as badly as gay men fortunately. In the original show, the beautiful show girls probably could have become “respectable” ladies if they left Berlin or started over and escaped Nazi persecution. But these people are “freaks.” Exactly the type of people who would be targeted as political prisoners or some other reason just to get rid of them because they went against Nazi ideals. They’d make something up if they had to.
It makes no sense. The whole point of Cabaret is that they give the audience what they want, no matter what that audience wants. So having a lineup of hot girls makes a hell of a lot more sense than whatever these are.
@@margaret6839I feel like you're contradicting yourself here, you literally say "no matter what the audience wants" and then say that it should only be hot girls. I can guarantee you that for each member of the ensemble there are plenty of people who find them attractive
@@margaret6839 but in the 1930s, Berlin was known for these kinds of night clubs/cabarets. there were live S&M shows at some places, and trans/queer folk were all over the scene. of course these would be the types of performers, and they would appeal to their audience: people came from all over the world to experience this kind of nightlife. even Cliff. he ran into his gay fling from another city at the Kit Kat Club.
Long after the angriest bunch abandoned fun art and theater, for bland and boring politics and labeling everything woke or whatever... they saw the Cast of Caberet and said, "I wish I could have some of that."
Then they saw who it was that's dancing about and having fun, so they were all "ewww, what is this, I want all hot girls, hot hot hot. Make it how I would like it"
*and then they were given that just that, to which they later said*
"Oh dear, think of the children, this smut is too much, I wish it were less provocative, leaving some room for imagination."
*so they stopped being so risque and once again, gave the audience what it wanted to which the audience barked*
"Wow, whatever happened to letting the audience have what they want? Everyone is far too sensitive these days. Try to live a little for crying out loud."
*confusion*
Madeline Brewer did the best interpretation of this song ever, I watched every one of them I could find. Here performance was incredible. Judi Dench was quite good but this was impeccable.
I absolutely agree! I see lots of people complaining about her confidence and such, but I really love her interpretation of the character.
Did anyone notice the dancers wardrobe malfunction? The one with green sleeves - one of their sleeves begins falling around 3:20 I think so they appear to take it off as they're dancing and throw it away around 3:45 in time with Madeline's singing. Blink and you'll miss it, it's such a seamless recovery!
Love how Sally is accurately portrayed as an 'ok' singer and a bit rough around the edges.
I don't know about "Ok" singer. She barely sang, it was mostly talking.
I saw a version of cabaret on stage where that was a central thing. It was meticulously directed but added a ghostly layer to the show which was on another level.
Yes, but Sally is American and she lost her American accent after the first few seconds :) Still a great performance though
@@evanhickamsally is not American, she is fully British. Mayfair is in London and they make it very clear she is English
@@joshdukie998 Baraly sang? Who the hell talk like that?
I would give ANYTHING to be in this production. This is absolutely fantastic. What a top tier revival. Cannot wait for the broadway transfer announcement
dont know if broadway deserves this production
Me too. I would love to play The Emcee. It would be amazing in Circle in the Square.
@@broadwaymike92I did play the emcee! It was such an amazing and eye opening time!
@@t3ddibearagreed
Gosh. Madeline Brewer is just breathtakingly amazing in this performance.
She's excellent
Just saw this production in London last week, Madeleine Brewer was sensational! The whole cast was very strong, and while this version is very different from the beloved film it was a wonderful take on the classic.
This can only work if you do a different aproach, because the film is too iconic. Actually my alltime favourite movie. But I've also seen a good adaptation in Germany some years ago
The film was completely different from the original stage show - this is a new take on the stage show, not the film!
The stage play came before the movie.
Saw this with Mason Alexander Park and Maude Apatow and the whole experience blew me away. The back story is darker than in the original movie and incredibly thought provoking. Loved every sexy, dark, funny, tragic second of it.
FYI the movie is not the “original” it’s based on a book by Christopher Isherwood.
Absolutely extraordinary production, utterly vibrant, provocative, and electrifying. Brimming with talent, especially Callum. Convinced me that Cabaret is actually my favorite musical
The kitkat club is utterly gorgeous. This performance is no match to watch them live especially with the stage. Of course the orchestra is beautiful!
Um.. not supposed to be...
@@edmccarthy4877What like grotty? 😂 Yeah of course it would be, it's kinda evident in clothes and their behaviour what kind of club it would be like in 30s Berlin. It's all a facade and the appeal brings people in.
It was like sensory overload in the best way humanly possible. Absolutely unforgettable!!!
*Kit Kat Klub
"even the orchestra is beeeeaaautiful!"
First time I am actually intimidated and scared by Sally Bowles!
Watching them live is something from another world. The stage, the cast, the musicians and also the pre-show dancers. Everything is extraordinary.
I wish there were more recordings of this cast!!
Brilliant. The only way to update this show is to step outside of the iconic Fosse choreography and it seems the two leads have done this. Can't wait to see it.
I keep coming back to this video at least once a month. I absolutely love this interpretation of the classic and this particular performance, simply BRAVO!
Saw this with Jake Shears and Rebecca Lucy Taylor at the Kit Kat in London and it was simply incredible. An amazing night
I saw this production a few months ago and Madeline Brewer was absolutely fantastic as Sally Bowles. One of the best theatrical performances I've ever seen.
Blown away by this, have never wanted to see a live Cabaret stage version as always thought they'd never meausre up to the film but having seen bits of the Alan Cummings and other productions I think this story will never get old sadly and also is more relevant and apposite than ever..probably always has been and always will be sadly
I would have given anything to see Eddie Redmayne in this role
I love this version! It plays up the show aspect and her roughness
No one can play the emcee like Alan Umming. Best ever.
So grotesque & beautiful - it’s amazing!
Cabaret has always been my favorite musical, and its story remains as apropos as ever. This production looks fantastic!
I’ve recently saw Cabaret for the first time. I saw the ‘93 version with Alan Cumming. But this led me down a rabbit hole of just looking up all kinds of stuff about Cabaret and all the meanings. I love how everyone looks in the production, especially Sally. She looks like such a doll or like a puppet. Gives such deeper depth to her nonchalance towards everything because she being puppeted to stay in the club. Turn a blind eye to everything because “it’s just politics”. Ugh. Gives me shivers looking at it. I love it.
this staging and concept for don’t tell mama is so clever yet simple~ love it
Wow! This casts energy is amazi ng!
Callum Scott Howells should star in a movie version...he's magnificent!
joel grey & alan cummings>>>
@@armalites9190 Letting people have their opinions >>>>
I saw it in New York 04/09 and I was mindblown. I was obsessed with the play after seeing this performance.
Alan Cumming IS the Emcee for me. Not one can surpass his performance. But I do enjoy the quirkiness of this!
I know the show is meant to be “in the round” but this traditional staging looks great with the orchestra in the back and the actors still dancing around the center. This could be a great way to stage the show for a tour!
I agree! The 2024 Tony awards performance of the Broadway transfer, and Amy Lennox's Oliver's performance also proves the show works well with "traditonal" staging! Would love to see other numbers performed this way, and other restaging ideas!
I LOVE the editorial style make-up and the choreography is incredible! ❤.
I saw this cast in November. It was fantastic!
I wish i could've seen this production. They nailed it
I got to see this live in London earlier this month, and let me just say, this became my new favorite musical from the start. Everything about it is just fucking GORGEOUS.
Gorgeous music, I have always loved this show. I just don't know why I was so caught off guard by it, but the wardrobe and makeup in this clip are surprisingly Jestercore!
Cabaret is fantastic as a story/narrative and does an incredible job of walking a tightrope line between what is eloquent and what is gruesome and obscene. The Kit Kat Club is gorgeous and mysterious, the characters are emotive, and even the orchestra is beautiful
Just heard that this was a HIGH SCHOOL production of Chicago? WOW!!! It could have been a BROADWAY version!!! That kid NEEDS to go to Broadway!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Joel Gray taught every successive actor how to plat MC. Gray's performance resonates in every one of them.
Alan Cumming surpassed Joel Grays portrayal.
The new costumes are SO GOOD
I loved it with Allan Cummings and Emma Stone
perfection one of the best kitkat cast up to date
Saw it with Eddie Redmayne and Jesse buckles and was blown away off to see it agin next month and can't wait.
I’m so sad I never saw Eddie and Jessie, love the cast recording! My first time was with Fra Fee and Amy Lennox, their combined performances alone justified the ticket price, utterly sensational
Saw this on Madeline's and Callum's opening night - fantastic cast change!
Absolutely flawless, new and retro at the same time classic
Pure genius.
the emcee is so good
Superb long take 🤩
When I tell you that im addicted to this performance I am ADDICTED. Fantastic cast.
I am so glad this exists!!! So when people ask me why I hated the Tony performance I can just show them this, how it was originally supposed to be done.
I'm glad Cabaret is being revived
seen it in LONDON wow what a show awesome
brilliant...both of them
Saw this production last week , absolutely blown away such a talented cast ❤
They are so fucking good!
The best evening I've had in any theatre just superb.
Went again to the Gala Evening and Cast after party, again fantastic
It is so worth it , I saw it yesterday and will definitely watch it again ❤
Sally frith is a delight. Such talent
I was lucky enough to sit up front for my birthday with this cast… even got a phone call 😂 It was spectacular! Truly spectacular ❤
This was fantastic! I can't remember listening to this Sally Bowles' song before, though, despite having watched both the movie and the Sam Mendes' revival version.
A thought about the MC: I find interesting that they keep casting more conventionally attractive actors in a part that was initiated by Joel Grey (who, like we Cubans like to say, nunca tuvo quince), yet Grey's iconic performance remains unrivaled.
Alan Cumming?
It's not a competition, they don't cast intending to rival Grey but give their own spin on the role.
Madeline Brewer as Sally with Eddie Redmayne as Emcee is I think best versions. Stop in at a deli get a corn beef on an onion role then walk to play after go to speakeasy drink old fashions smoke lucky strikes…. Would be best night ever
Amazing how after all that time Joel Grey still manages to electrify the stage. Him and Cumming’s interpretations bounce off each other so well
Got tickets for new year's eve. Can't wait x
Holy holy that was gut.
SLAY
Obsessed with his outfit ❤
I really want to see the show!
When i was in london, i got a chance to see this live. Me and my dad both. Had to leave early, dad got too freaked out, i was ready to stay the whole time. Amazing performance, the emcee was flawless, but each performer was awesome. Id love to see it done in the states and see if its anyhow different, either less or more showy and risque
It’s usually not as showy as this. The makeup and outfits are REALLY toned up in this revival. Usually they just are wearing normal clothing for the time. Yes, they do wear risqué outfits at the KitKat club, but all time appropriate and normal in a way. Beside the emcee’s strappy harness.
This production is way more campy and outrageous. That’s why it’s so polarizing.
@allshookup1640 Really? Hell I thought this is just how a production of Cabaret is supposed to look like, but I'm not a big Broadway guy so...
Maybe they just go harder in the UK. Either way it was an awesome experience, I can understand tho why some people would be so put off by it
@@ajcook3146 it’s not that they go harder in the UK this is just a different version. When you revive a show anywhere, you can make loads of creative changes if you’d like to for your individual production. This is just the latest revival and this what they chose to do for this individual production. Cabaret is coming back to Broadway in the US in 2024. With the same creative directors as this production, the show will be relatively the same as it is here, but they can tweak it however they choose for the Broadway version. It’s not a matter of location, it’s individual production and creative director’s choices. Broadway hasn’t had Cabaret on Broadway since 2014. It has been on Broadway and the West End several times every time it is different while the story is the same. Costumes, choreography, lighting, line delivery, makeup, hair etc.
One of my favourite versions everrrr of this song ! 💜
Going to see Eddie Redmayne & Gayle Rankin in New York on closing night for them !
Beautiful
I love this show so much, but in this rendition I cant help but see Stewart from Mad TV as one of the chorus dancers in Don't Tell Mamma.
First. This was so good
watching this after meeting callum yesterday is craaaaazy hahahah
The best production of the best show ever!
Genius.
This is outstanding.🙂😲😀
I have no words,, the costumes,, the dancing style,,,, the acting,,,
I prefer Alan Cumming in the role of Emcee (but, hey that's just me). Madeline Brewer is wonderful
Love ALAN❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂
Wonderful!!
Callum is great!!
The costumes are my favorite part of this revival! Fantastic!!
So it’s Mein Herr, and Don’t Tell Mama plus a little bit of I Can’t Do It Alone
Does anyone know where I can watch a recording of the whole production please? Callum Scott Howells is so unbelievably magnetic! I can’t (and don’t want to) look away! Would love to see the whole production and sadly missed it live.
Tickets cost half a paycheck so there will be no live recording of the full production
Reddit may be of use to you, plenty of recordings of musicals on there!!
I can't wait til it comes to Broadway, I would love to see Callum play the Emcee and maybe Mia Goth as Sally?
The thing is though, when it comes to Broadway, you wont have the full experience. If you go in the west end, there’s a whole atmosphere and pre show going on that would be really hard to replicate all over again.
I think the emcee is the most fluid and malleable character in all of Broadway. It's like New York pizza it maybe the exact same ingredients. But it is never the same flavor. The emcee is the same thing the character is same for every reading but the actors bring the flavor and life to the emcee.
❤❤❤❤❤ holy 💩this is beyond amazing‼️
This was amazing
Amazing.wonderfull♡♡
Madeline Brewer is by far the best as Sally. No other actress does something special/original with the role, they all just "sing" the song as you would expect. Madeline Brewer makes it cool and her own!
I love this.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
She kind of reminds me of what Bette Davis would sound like if she did musical therater!
Danke😅😅
I got taught by one of the dancers and omg I love them so much
Brilliant...(Who did the choreography for this production?)
