What an awesome video!! Man, I grew up with The Band. Levon Helm is one of the greatest singers/drummers ever. He and The Band shall always be remembered with smiles on our faces. MadMark
Together with the late Richie Hayward of Little Feat, Levon Helm is amoung all time best drummers - and he can still sing like noone else... great great video !!!
levon..awesome as usual..if you haven't seen one of his rambles in woodstock, do it... danko..goose bumps...you and richard are sorely missed...rest in peace boys...one of the greatest bands of all time...period, amen.. anyone that would argue, doesn't know much about music...
Since I first discovered Larry Carlton playing drums on this Vid, and being a Carlton fan, I've watched several uploads of Carlton interviews and guitar lessons on UA-cam. Despite being a guitarist, in his lessons, he teaches novice guitarists to pay significant attention to the drummer. In his interviews he describes one particular drummer as so outstanding that when he hears him play to anything, he hears more than simply the sound of drums & symbols, but a sound similar to playing notes.
Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for the piano part for The Band's "The Weight" - which was played by Garth Hudson - can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
I love the way Rick Danko always sort of hopped around when he played. You could always tell he was into it. And Levon Helm is just legendary. HUGE influence on my drumming.
You know the reunited version released three albums, right? That's hardly just playing the same old songs; they're allowed to play these incredible things from their back catalogue.
It's about a man being given a task to meeting a series of people, on behalf of a woman named Fannie. The Weight, is the task itself. All the people mentioned in the song were inspired by people the members of The Band knew at one point. Crazy Chester was really crazy. But the visit to Nazareth is fictional. Hope that helps.
The final version of The Band: OF COURSE, the Legendary Garth Hudson on Piano (normally their organist, and the best you'll ever hear...it's a shame that he needs introduction); Jim Weider on guitar (fine replacement musically for Robbie); Randy Ciarlante on drums (he sang some of Richard Manuel's parts in this version of The Band); and I'm assuming Richard Bell on organ (normally their pianist, and a great one at that; he died a couple of years ago of cancer).
the oldschool production techniques and live sound equipment from the era of the bands heyday also lent itself to the raw rocking feel of the band. its almost like the clarity of modern sound gear sweetens it up too much or something.
Garth Hudson is officially a keyboard/organ playing maniac. Playing two keyboards at once when one is behind him? How is he one of the least remembered members of The Band?
@29cherokee29 - Yup & he never paid back my Uncle Charlie Halbert from West Helena, Arkansas who helped out Ronnie Hawkins, Levon Helm & The Band before they hit it big with Dylan & went out on their own!
@LavaEagle "I think that second drummer has a lot of potential for a good band." ROFLMAO!!! If Larry Carlton knew what you said about his playing drums, he'd mention that he made his bones and still makes beautiful music with the best musicians, with his Gibson 335. He is "Mr. 335"
this is a powerful performance. the soul of the band was not robbie robertson. it was richard and levon and rick. and the post-richard albums, especially jericho and jubilation, can take their place respectably in the band canon.
Needless to say, the rest of The Band weren't in a foreign country when Robbie was so busy screwing them over with royalties. He was living with them in NY. If Levon was so pissed about it then why did he wait 30 years to say anything? Levon always referred to RR as the Band's songwriter in those days. Why has he changed his stance now?
I have known Levon Rick an Garth and Richard since 1980. You can search for me on facebook to see the sculptures i made for them. Levon has his in his studio on the fireplace mantle. kitrick short originals.
@Chefdeangolf he wrote this song. without him The Band would never be as famous as they are. so relax on the anti robertson talk. helm and robertson were both brilliant in their time.
one of the greatest American musical voices, Levon Helm and Rick Danko. Love them!
withot doubt the best anyplace in the universe
What an awesome video!!
Man, I grew up with The Band.
Levon Helm is one of the greatest singers/drummers ever.
He and The Band shall always be remembered with smiles on our faces.
MadMark

Together with the late Richie Hayward of Little Feat, Levon Helm is amoung all time best drummers - and he can still sing like noone else... great great video !!!
One of the greatest R&R Bands of All Time.....RIP Rick Danko...Levon is A National Treasure!!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. It has a combination of so many types of music.
Best song. thanks very much for sharing and posting it up.
Watched the Last Waltz 100s of times when it came out.. a fitting tribute to masters of music
abousoltly amazing, love The Band, still sounding great as they did years and years ago!
This was nothing less than amazing! Levon sounded awesome along with everyone else. Long live The Band!
I love these old men! I loved the young ones too.
One of the most surprising and best Commercial I have ever seen
The Band used to practice at my Uncle's home in West Helena, Arkansas. He is mentioned in Levon's book "This Wheel Is On Fire"
Thanks for posting this! Danko lived some years in Norway at the end, met him a couple of times
Ow, great music , great memories,
THANKS !
levon..awesome as usual..if you haven't seen one of his rambles in woodstock, do it... danko..goose bumps...you and richard are sorely missed...rest in peace boys...one of the greatest bands of all time...period, amen.. anyone that would argue, doesn't know much about music...
You were right from your side; and I was right from mine. I saw Danko and Levon in 1983. THAT'S how I want to remember them.
RIP LEVON........ SING IN HEAVENS CHOIR!
thank you john Hamilton. thx. missing Robbie but his words are here. great track.
The Band is the best
great lyrics, Robbie. man, great lyrics.

Levon Helm, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, all from Arkansas. What amazing, super talents.
Yessir, goose flesh indeed. What great memories this conjures up.
In the early to mid-1990's. A tragedy but his soul was always there.
love the band..
@JPD767075 his name is randy ciarlante (sp) he was part of the group 88-00 when the group ended when rick died.
Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for the piano part for The Band's "The Weight" - which was played by Garth Hudson - can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

And Levon Helm is just legendary. HUGE influence on my drumming.
Levon Helm stilll has the best voice in rock n' roll'! Amazing song.
Best song, best feeling, best Movie : The Easy Rider
i really love the piano solo..wish it was longer..and where the hell is Robbie..don't tell me that's him
Classic! thanks
@thisismyidgdi I totally agree with you on this. I love this song and this is my favourite version. what a song. WHAO.
two singing drummers in the same band!!!!
that's awesome :)
great great great great song.
Great song, Great band!
That is the exact phrase I was looking for...commom sense. Thanks
You know the reunited version released three albums, right? That's hardly just playing the same old songs; they're allowed to play these incredible things from their back catalogue.
love to hear they're still going on strong on 60 something !
This is a great performance.
Music don't get better this this!
God bless Levon
Great song!!

The coolest most talented band ever
Can t get enough
GARTH with the GREASE!!!
I can only find this live on here. I've never liked anything live on UA-cam.
5 friggin stars baby !!!!!
@29cherokee29 - Thank you Cherokee, My Uncle also helped Elvis, Conway Twitty & many others!
actually no that's Richard Bell (of Janis' Full Tilt Boogie Band fame) on piano.
it's sad that Robbie never does anything "Band" related
. Happy Birthday Garth!!!
Randy Ciarliante (I think that's how it's spelled). He played on the last two Band albums.
@SupRep Yes, unfortunately. He died in December 1999 and Richard died in March 1986
Garth Hudson on organ is also from the original band.
the best song ever! rip levon
aguante the band. por la memoria de rick danko y richard manuel.
And this is the top song sung by a Canadian artist according to et on this New Year's Eve thing?! Confused
CAn i say that is a super song ? Neh, that would be an understatement.
AMEN to that
Anybody notice that it's the late Rick Danko on bass? He died Dec. 30, 1999. Just missed the new millenium! Rest his troubled soul.
@SupRep He's not dead... He has an album coming out this year actually. Rick and Richard are dead, a lot of R's there but not Robbie
I know it is missing that old woodsy roots sound, but I like this one too.
sounds great!
OK, Doc this ones for you......no heavy guitars here...."He aint heavy, he's my Brother"...Love you Brother Rustyt
the oldschool production techniques and live sound equipment from the era of the bands heyday also lent itself to the raw rocking feel of the band. its almost like the clarity of modern sound gear sweetens it up too much or something.
Rick Danko on bass brings a tear to my eye.
love this a lot. anyway, is mr helm having a cold or something? oh, who cares, his voice is a treasure anyway.
Garth Hudson is officially a keyboard/organ playing maniac. Playing two keyboards at once when one is behind him? How is he one of the least remembered members of The Band?
@JPD767075 "Is that Jackson Brown on the drums?"
Nope. Unbelievably, it's actually Larry Carlton!!! No shit.
Awesome performance, I wish Robbie was there but I would rather have Danko there then Robbie.
Didn't Levon Helm play the preacher man in "Fire Down Below"?
@29cherokee29 - Yup & he never paid back my Uncle Charlie Halbert from West Helena, Arkansas who helped out Ronnie Hawkins, Levon Helm & The Band before they hit it big with Dylan & went out on their own!
@LavaEagle "I think that second drummer has a lot of potential for a good band."

nice version!
Anybody got a date on this?
How goods Danko
priceless!
you should read Levon's biography "This Wheel's On Fire". Levon absolutely hates the movie the Last Waltz.
Top tune
Basta non guardare il video... grande musica! Per il resto, evoca grande malinconia...

Garth's amazing.
Like the eighth dwarf.
But it sounded so much better when they were young. I believe rock and roll has youth DNA
How come under artist here, it says "Carl Perkins"?
Levon a legend
Is that Jackson Brown on the drums?
I agree
What year was this? great sound quality, strong vocal by Levon.
This thread is finished. I think we made both our points.
Con
@Chefdeangolf he wrote this song. without him The Band would never be as famous as they are. so relax on the anti robertson talk. helm and robertson were both brilliant in their time.
60 y/o and still fucking jamming thats gonna be me 1 day
I think it took a while for the camera crew to realize that that the drummer is the singer, haha.
heartbreaking to see richard not there..
