This engine also had issues with the chains stretching and the primary tensioners were plastic too. I believe it's recommended for those 2001 and 2002 3.9 V8's to have all four chains and tensioners replaced with the new style/upgraded chains and tensioner sets.
Is there any difference in tensioners between the 2000-2002 and the 2003-2005 3.9 v8s or do they both share the same problem and the same parts ? Thank you Matt. Excellent video !
02 3.9 Thunderbird...Same garbage tensioners...Same garbage valve cover/spark plug tube gasket kit. The revision would have been after the 02 model year.
Great video good work! where are you located? I have 01 LS bought new. 78k miles when guide snapped. In Palm Springs Ca if you have recommendations. Thanks Mathew
What are the Ford part numbers for the upgraded oem timing tensioners that you showed in this video? Are they originally meant for a 00-02 or the refreshed 03-06 LS? Thanks!
I'm buying exactly the same car with the same issue. Great video. How much will cost a job like that? I'm in Fontana CA. Any recommendations about a good mechanics. Thanks
How many miles are on this LS? When or how many miles do these tend to fail? Agreed, both sides should be done, not just the one. Also, camshaft bearing caps need to be loosened evenly amount all of them until all of the valve spring tension is removed from the camshaft. If not, you risk the valve spring tension to be uneven and break the cam in half.
It's 180 degrees out of time. The crankshaft turns 2 times to 1 rotation of the cams. So, just turn the crankshaft one more full rotation (180 degrees of cam) will bring the milled flats to the top.
Great content on your page! Would you be able to help me by answering a few questions about the timing process? I’ve had my 2002 Ls at the mechanic shop since last may. He can’t figure out the timing. I’ve bought all the tools and have had online mechanic services call him and walk him through it but we seem to be missing a step somewhere. When he goes to manually turn the crank to ensure proper timing it locks after about a quarter turn. I would gladly cashapp or Venmo you your asking fee. But I really need help with this issue and have exhausted all options other than sending the car to the dealership.
You more than likely hit valves, these are interference engines, if it jumps 2 teeth on the gear it's over, have them stick a bore scope in the cylinder and check the valves
You gotta get a new engine - or at least a new ( or rebuilt) head with cams. At least one piston is shot and most likely the cylinder walls are damaged beyond repair. Best bet is to find a low-mileage used engine or complete rebuild.

Where do I get those from
Question!!DIY..... How to remove the oil dipstick tube. In order to remove the valve cover
Finally. Thanks for the video bro.
you are welcome.

Yes, 2003 and up have the new tensioners. Some very late 2002's have them.

Does the 2003 Lincoln LS 3.9 (.jag motor) have timing marks anywhere on the crankshaft pulley if not where are they. Does it have any ?

Do the flat parts stay facing up at all times ? Or do they rotate because mine are facing down

NOTE TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY
PLASTIC AND HIGH HEAT W/FRICTION DONT MIX USE 100%Metal Tensioners!!!!! SMDH
What do you do when the exhaust cam chain brake
Pray!!! Need to check engine for internal damage to valves.

What is the torque on the cam bearing caps and how can you tell the left and right tensioner
Unless it snaps your secondary timing chain. Happened the second day after owning it. Ugh.
ohh no!! i gotta be honest it just does not all of a sudden snap the chain. takes some time for that to happen.
can it still be done if the chain snaps? or is it worth it?
Sometimes the secondary tensioner plastic parts drop down into the primary chain sprocket and take out the primary chains too.
@Matt Hodnick These engines are NON clearance which means, pistons will hit the valves if the cams get too out of time.
