Congrats on your 500th video Chris.
Congrats on the 500th. Episode! :)
I love that you test capacitors for drifting values… in computing those drifting values matter
It looks great Doc and grats on 500 Episodes!
and i just watched the ep where you got this and the other one delivered!
Nice repair Chris. I learn much more from your videos. Thankx for sharing. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands. Now iam working on a Amiga 500
500 already, well done mate!
Thanks for the video Dr Chris 👍🏻 Congrats on the 500 episode 🎉 I must have missed a few episodes 🤔 Cheers 🍻
The metal I reckon looks better than when the machine was bought from the shop.
Can Confirm! :D
Jeebus, that thng looks preme-o now. I'm back on the step where u deal with contention issues betwixt DF0 drive and scsi HD0 drive. Unplug Scsi , it boots from floppy fine. remove floppy ribbon connect scsi ribbon, it eventually boots HD0 fine. Connect both drives, rarely boots up. (usually gotta do the pre-boot environment mousebutton trick)
I can't remember what model drive was in my A3000 so my anecdote may not apply to this one. I had a problem where the head wouldn't start seeking, and I think it went through a whiirrr clunk phase as well. I ended up taking the lid off and I found that the rubber bump stop that the head arm rests against when "off" had turned into a gooey mess. This caused the arm to stick to it and the voice coil wasn't strong enough to free it. I ended up gently freeing the arm from the stop without letting the heads crash together or placing them on to the platter, then I removed the rubber stop and replaced it. I didn't have anything suitable hanging around, so I used some layers of heatshrink. It worked, the drive spun up and I was able to image it.
It's been a few years since I did it so I can't say whether it's a long term fix, taking the top off a hard disk outside of a clean booth is never a good idea, but it should be good enough to at least image a drive.
Dr Chris sent the drives back to me and I would really love to recover the data from them so I may try the approach you suggest here! Thanks for the tip! 👍🙂
Another great vid =) maybe that 040 card needs additional power cable!?
its missing a chip. still working on it, i did get the fan fixed
Uh oh, I’ve heard that hard drive noise before; she’s dead, Jim. At least with my thick Quantum drive, it's a hot running drive.
I have little hope of recovering the data on those drives but at some point I may put them on the bench and see if I can coax them to run just long enough to image them!
@VernGraner you can also plug them into the zulu i put in there and unplug the amiga hdd. Only power and scsi to the drive. Flip the init switch. Install a empty fat32 formatted card and turn it on. It will image the entire disk to the card. Bad sectors and all. You can then attempt to mess w it in winuae without harming your amiga
Luv it.
Another happy customer gets a working Amiga, nice job. Have you every had to fix a Video Toaster?
nope. why do you have a broken one?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Last I checked it was OK, you had a Toaster card in the video and I was wondering if you had ever needed to repair one. 🙂
@@DarrenJCrawford oh that was the users. I have like 4 of them, (3) 2000 and (1) 4000, i used it a long time ago, but the one i had borks out when hot. since theres really no use for it anymore with modern linear editors its more of a nich thing, cable nightmare. but fun to make kiki wiggle through the scenes.
Do you want a Taco Bell “AAAAHHGGGH” sound
Great video as usual! 👍 👍 Just one question: Why not replace the hard disks with a much simpler compact flash? And second question.. 😅 Do you know the Halifax UA-cam channel, specialized Amiga repairer in France? Nice job! Congratulations...
i replaced it with a zulu rp2040
👍🏾
If you weren't so far away I'd ask you to have a go to find out how I killed my 500 (rev 5) when no bloodsugar me (brain plain not working at all) goofed the soldering up to upgrade kick 2.04 to 3.1.
just a rom jumper from pin 1 to 31 makes it work on a r5, no goofy pin lift or adaptors needed
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Yeah, I didn't know that at the time. Now the board is dead, I have no idea what happened.
it will only pop the rom, do you have another kickstart rom to try?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I put the old 2.04 back in after and it's still dead.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I swapped the CIAs and I got some life in it. Normal gray screens up to boot screen but that's about it. Floppy non-responsive, not even a click. Damndest thing, I lifted on the CPU and put it back in and after that it's dead again.
I have an immaculate original 3000D, what would you recommend I do to it preemptively? Everything works great on it.
I also have an 040 A4000D, I suppose I should test out the 040 card in the working 3000…
Enjoy it. are you asking about upgrades or what to do?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration recommendations to keep it operating another 30 years.
the main killer is a battery. if its in there, snip it out and neutralize it all with vinegar/ipa and a good ipa wipe rinse. the scsi can be converted to a Zuluscsi that uses hard disk images, easier to back up and restore to a SD card than a old scsi hard disk. upgrades exsist galore for video and network cards and many many things. the only limiting factor is your budget.
Where do you get that AUI to RJ45 from ??
anywhere, its a Centrecom 210T ethernet AUI tranciever, usually about 10-25USD on ebooger heres a gen search i use www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1311&_nkw=centrecom+210ts&_sacat=0
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thank you for the quick answer😀
