I think season 5 pretty much said: "Sometimes, dealing with our problems by ourselves is too much and we need help from other people. There's nothing wrong about seeking help"
But what do u do if all the help u can get either wants a check and doesn't care or just plainly doesn't care I wish they would've touched on that a theme that I never see talked much about imo

@@dromany5894 probably because someone actually do care. Even if you don't realize it there is or there will be someone who will are for you. Making a story with a character that doesn't realize it and doesn't seek help. That's starts with and addiction and ends with an addiction without a proper character development would be pretty boring. In the end there will be someone, the only way I can see a story where the mc has all characters who doesn't care at all about helping him/her and don't ask help at people like psychologist, for example, turn out to be good is showing how this person realize how to end his problems by himself but in truth sometimes you can't do it and also in the end you are the one who stops it, the others just push you towards it but doesn't save you, they can help you showing the way, a way you will travel yourself

When PC tells bojack to be his character, then take off the costume and stop being the toxic person he is. In most of the season, he keeps his Philbert costume on. An interesting thing I didn’t notice till now. He’s hiding behind the costume because he’s afraid to change

Jungaro there’s no such thing as reading into Bojack “too much” I think that’s the point of the show. It’s really deep and meant to be looked into. The writers don’t just slam stuff in your face, the make you figure it out a bit

@Kuala06 Ayyye wassup. Btw I dont recommend watching Shadys video on BoJack. He fails to understand season 5 and 6 of the show. Watch this youtuber called Johnny2Cellos. Hes much better at understanding the show than Shady
Addiction is a coping mechanism, like any other destructive behavior. BoJack attempted to eliminate his primary means of coping without developing a healthier alternative behavior. It's not enough to simply stop doing the bad thing, he needs to address the root cause of the impulse that drives that behavior and redirect it towards more constructive emotional outcomes. As Todd told him in season 3 -- "It's you."

I think a strong theme of this season was relapse and how (not) to handle it. Everybody ends up relapsing into old behaviours at some point: Princess Carolyn stubborning choosing to raise her child alone, Diane's moralizing and hypocrisy harming the people around her and herself, Todd breaking up with his girlfriend and unable to work out a compromise with Emily. My hope is that in the next season, the others will also realize they haven't addressed the core of these problems and that they'll figure out better ways to handle it.

I’d like to add Mr Peanutbutter into the conversation too, as he fell back into his cycle of dating younger women with Pickles, and also goes back to Diane after they divorce.
@Graphiar the creators and writers really want to sell that he is indeed, biologically asexual, as they have stated in interviews, they have worked with asexual writers to try to get this right. the confusion is either a. lack of quality writing on their part or b. general confusion on what asexuality is from the audience.

One detail you missed in the season is near midway the end of the season, Bojack doesn’t take off his costume in the opening. This shows that he doesn’t know what’s real life and what’s not anymore
Its also after he started on the narcotics and he just floats along between his home and the identically designed film set. His perception of reality is gone
Season 5 just has a grim feeling to it. And I realized it’s because the mane 5 characters don’t really interact with each other, they’re pretty much on their own 90% of the time. You can even kinda feel the isolation while you watch it
Shady if u see this since ur doing a video on BoJack’s arc in Season 5 does that mean you’ve warmed up to the season more, or do you still feel the same?
Some people have made some arguments that have lightened up my opinion on various parts of season 5, however, I overall still feel the same way.
I don't know; with the exception of Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter the main characters also didn't interact much in season 4 and that one didn't feel nearly as grim.
Julia 713 And that’s why the season has such an emotional impact. The loneliness is palpable. Everyone is isolated. It’s not an original theme but they do it well and I think it works.
@@ShadyDoorags Season 5 is the darkest season ever. When BoJack's mother died, everything is worse... I knew the final two episodes of season 5 was the beginning of the end, and saying goes: "What could go wrong, can go wrong." I feel the same way, too.

I noticed that every time BoJack does something horrible, he feels bad about it. He needs to realize that he doesn’t hurt people on purpose. However, I also noticed when he’s not an addicted, he can still be an asshole because he lets his pride take over. E.g, when he lets all that money burn on Mr. Peanut Butter’s show instead of answering the question correctly and letting the money go to charity. He needs to recognize his pride comes from not getting enough recognition from parents. I’m really excited about season 6!
The way I see, he's not hurting people by accident. He does that he knows or should know will hurt others because those things make him feel better in the short term. Not that he usually wants to hurt people; he's just willing to hurt others for the sake of a short-term relief from his own pain. Of course the guilt means that when he hurts others he usually hurts himself as well and thus makes things worse himself in the long run, but giving up short term benefits for long term ones can be very difficult.

Wow... I never even realized Bojack drove into traffic because he wanted to get hurt to get medicine. I thought he was just sobering up and freaking out. I gasped.
That's way Beatrice's death impact BoJack's life (everything is worse), and second, his TV career went down the drain because of the choking incident. That's what you get for taking too many painkillers!

I too think it will be back. Like, a very famous show that references a shitty thing that happened wich the people involved WILL recognize (fuck u Diane for doing that btw). I have this theory that Penny will watch the show, feel bad about that and Charlotte will come to LA and kill Bojack. I don't think this is what will happen, but its a dumb, funny thing I like to think about. But yeah, I can see the New Mexico thing coming back, even tho..its not that big of a deal

Murillo Ferreira yeah, also Diane is indirectly responsible for the whole scenario, as she triggered the breakup with Wanda. What I think will happen so that the media will start pulling the string on the incident and that would cause Bojack to get arrested, and worse of all, severely digging Charlotte into deeper shit as the media paints the picture of Charlotte’s family as something they aren’t, and something that they don’t and never want to be.
Another really cool detail is that in the first episode, PC tells Bojack to put on the costume, be the character and then take off the costume.
In episode 9, he had the costume on the whole time.
I wanted Copernicus (The improv cat) to be at the funeral in Free Churro. "I'm not gonna lie, if he made all that up that's good improv, game recognize game."
This show keeps getting better and better. The monologue episode was the best. Thank you for your analysis video.

Okay so I have a possible theory for what bojack season 6 could be about.
Just hear me out it’s a long explanation.
When bojack and Diane are fighting bojack says “I’ll tell you whatever you want, and while I’m at it(...) or what happened to cherona the makeup lady on horsin’ around?” And in the very next episode during his drug musical at directly 19:44 if you look on the left side of the screen when its showing bojacks worst mistakes you can see him at a mirror with what looks like the same makeup lady from episode eight of season one! I think two coincidental references in bojack horseman is enough evidence for me. So my theory is that cherona the makeup lady who has only appeared in two scenes in one episode, will have a much bigger role in season 6 as maybe an addict in rehab or a worker for rehab.
Even if she isn’t there in the flesh, Bojack could recount the story in full via flashback while in rehab

Shady dorags I just wanna say thank you for the videos you make, I came upon your channel 3 days ago and I have watched alot of your videos to the point of going to watch bojack horseman now I'm almost finished with season 1 .. Thank you so much!! Never stop making these analysis
I have a different read on this. At the end of season 4 Bojack is in a good place headed in a good direction. He's not making all the right choices, but he's making alot of better choices consistently. Heck, when Diane and Mr PB break up he looks after her pretty lovingly even, rejecting her advances on him gently when it wasn't that long ago he wanted to date her, because by his own words he knew she was still in love with Mr PB. Incoming pain train though.
Bojack does start feeling lonely, but he's coping and he's still progressing. The show then starts reminding him of who he is trying to escape which puts pressure on him, but it's not pressure he can't handle. A pep talk from Carolyn gets him back on the right path. At this point Carolyn is still mostly in the picture doing her job. Then his mom dies and that shakes him alot. He NEEDS to talk to someone about it and he both tries to reach out and push Diane away at the same time. Diane is fully aware he needs help, but she's too messed up herself with her own dissolving life to be there for Bojack like he just was for her. I don't blame Diane for that, but sucks for Bojack that he's finally trying to reach out in his own shitty way and the person who could provide him what he needs currently cannot.
This is when things take a really nasty turn. Bojack takes Diane's advice and starts getting help from a Therapist, but in shitty Bojack fashion he tries to pretend it's not him going to therapy. But he is and he totally understands it. You know this by when Diane jumps in and he says he's emotionally naked. This is not an accident. The Nasty turn is Diane's hypocrisy. Diane says he should get therapy, Bojack does, then Diane tells him he's not allowed to get therapy from HER therapist. This is not her call to make, it's the therapist's. Bojack keeps seeing her though so Diane fully steps into villain level hypocrisy and crashes his therapy session. For someone like Diane who's gone to therapy for 7 years and values it...this is really REALLY bad.
After calming down Diane tells him he should go back, but she knows he won't at this point. She basically burnt his bridge. It's an empty gesture. She just wants to have the "high ground" again because she knows she fucked up and she doesn't want to feel bad about her own actions. After getting in an argument with Bojack about it she, again as someone with 7 years of therapy experience, intentionally gaslights Bojack into reliving one of the moment he's so ashamed of he won't even tell her, and he's told her about everything else so she knows how bad he feels about it. This reliving Bojack is forced to do is what finally breaks his grip on reality and he starts losing track of who the character of Philbert is and who Bojack Horseman is. Bojack is in really bad shape at this point, but he's still hanging on.
Then Bojack has an accident on set because Princess Carolyn neglected her job, being far too busy with her own personal life. A big deal was made out of showing that she was NOT successfully juggling both her job and trying to get a child, with her failing on both ends. It's an understandable mistake on PCs part, but the accident is what introduces Bojack to the pills at a time when he's extremely vulnerable. Though Bojack was in control of his drinking he was not prepared for the addictiveness of the pills and begins to slowly succumb to using them to escape from his pain. He's got a new addiction at this point to replace his drinking, going as far as to intentionally get into an accident to get more pills because he was unwilling to directly betray his promise to Hollyhock.
Finally we have Diane come in and deliver the coup de grace. Diane once again on her hypocritical high horse is not ok with Bojack not being tormented by the success of the film. She wrote the script to gaslight him and intentionally harm him and him seemingly being ok (but totally not being ok under the surface) enrages her. She's also extremely hurt that Bojack has kept tsomethign important from her and she's plainly taking out that frustration on him. Diane wants Bojack to admit he's wrong and say he needs her, she's looking for validation both of her past terrible actions AND almost completely opposed validation as Bojack's friend. So Diane directly asks him, IN PUBLIC with people walking by, about the thing he feels so bad about he woudln't tell even her. She, as someone with 7 years of therapy, demands he give her this answer in public even as they have to stop to address people continually walking by. She even twists it to point out if he's done bad things it'll look badly on her while also trying to appeal to him as a friend....two conflicting approaches. When blocked and Bojack suggests that he feels pain and guilt for the things he's done Diane attacks. She goes right for the throat with the biggest sore point she knows Bojack has, Sarah Lynn. She pretty directly outright blames him for her decline and death. But Diane is being very hypocritical/hurtful. Her own words. "You are not responsible for the dysfunction of others." She's said that many times herself, but if we follow this rhetoric then Bojack was not responsible for Sarah Lynn. But it serves her purpose in this argument, so she ignores that mantra for this argument.
Furthermore she tries once again to play the moral high ground. Still claiming she just wants to help him despite all the shit she's intentionally done to tear him down and in direct conflict with the idea of helping him. She tries to flip the situation back around so once more she's the good guy and he's "being a total asshole" despite the fact she's repeatedly attacking him about his deepest insecurities, once again in public and once again as someone who's gone to therapy for 7 years. She knows better. She doesn't care. She needs to validate herself. Even if that's at Bojack's expense. As her final hail mary she basically throws their friendship on the fire as an ultimatum to "win" the argument.
Bojack values their friendship so as she goes to walk off he confides in her. Despite this she goes to walk out on him without giving him anything back. The reason I keep bringing up her 7 years of therapy is that it sets the framing for all of this. She knows how vulnerable he is about all the things she attacks. She knew how crucial him seeing a therapist was. She knows how important it is for her to respond to him about him confiding in her and how big of a move it is for Bojack. But Diane doesn't care. She's a selfish Hypocrite through and through. She has all the knowledge and experience with which to do the right thing and instead she weaponizes it to use against Bojack for self gain...or rather self enabling of her own mental issues.
Bojack is a shitty person who is all the things that is wrong with him. But in season 5 alot of major life events went very poorly for Bojack. Events outside of his control. Despite that he had a grip on it, until Diane. Diane managed to be the hands down worst and most nasty character in the show. Bojack had a fighting chance, and for her own ego Diane went against everything she says she stands for and burned him down all season, eventually leading to him completely breaking. If Bojack is responsible for Sarah Lynn, Diane is responsible for Bojack. If Bojack is not responsible for Sarah Lynn then Diane is an utterly repulsive human being. Personally I lean towards the latter one and I think the show does too. In the final episode of the season Diane herself admits that she is a hypocrite and that she makes herself and everyone around her miserable. The biggest irony here is that Stefani Stilton, the owner of GirlCroosh, successfully takes the high ground vs Diane. Stefani points out how Diane holds everyone to an impossible standard, including herself, nobody is capable or meeting and that it destroys her life and others. But Stefani never pretends to be what she's not, when Diane tries to throw it back at her (using a passive tone) about not writing so many takedowns Stefani just tut tuts her. She doesn't deny anything, she's running a business and she's drawn a clear line between personal and business.
I fully believe that without Diane's constant petty vengeful sabotaging Bojack would have come out the end of this season in just as good or better of a place than he went into it. At the very least not near as bad of a place. She was the main driving force in his devolving into madness by blocking his attempts to help himself and actively sabotaging him and attacking him throughout the season.
Jesus fuck, I thought Diane was just some scrappy little documentary writer this whole time, this is just maddening. I hope Bojack continues and doesn't wind up like Tuca and Bertie so we can have a content Horseman at the end.
"You are not responsible for the dysfunction of others" is something that was said by Diane's therapist, not Diane herself. And if she she sometimes talks to her therapist about her frustrations with Bojack, why is she wrong to feel uncomfortable with Bojack seeing the same therapist? I'm not saying it was her decision to make, but she couldn't help that the situation made her feel uncomfortable and thus made her feel the need to stop seeing that therapist. Besides, Bojack knew it was Diane's therapist and went to see her for that reason. He didn't have to do that; he could have seen any other therapist instead.
I didn't like Diane much during the fight either since she did start it in a needlessly aggressive and confrontational way ("I don't even know you any more" and almost demanding to know what happened in New Mexico) and then told him he was being "a total asshole". Still, the reason she brought up Sarah Lynn is because Bojack had just claimed that he was the one suffered "THE MOST!" from his own actions, which was clearly not true and even kind of disrespectful to Sarah Lynn's memory given his contribution to her death. And while he wasn't SOLELY responsible for Sarah Lynn (she did quickly agree to the bender, after all), it was wrong for him to tempt a drug addict to get back on drugs again.

@@jayjay86443 It's important to remember that Diane is just as fucked up as Bojack. To the point where she was commonly referenced as "the female Bojack" by alot of the community. Though support of her has grown as the exact kind of hypocrite she represents in society has become more commonplace in the last 5 years.
"Everyone is the hero of their own story." as the quote goes. We interpret our experiences and actions through our own self serving and distorted lens. You can see Diane struggling with that lens for 5 seasons. She knows she's fucked up, but she has difficulty stopping herself. Just like Bojack knows he's fucked up but has difficulty stopping himself. Neither is evil, both are messed up broken people who's brokeness displays in different ways.
The reason I'll be more harsh on Diane though is because what we know about her past creating the broken person she is now vs Bojack. Bojack plainly and objectively had a way WAY worse childhood that started him down the fucked up path than Diane's that started her down the fucked up path.
As well Diane has the benefit of 7 years of therapy, and a loving marriage from a supportive (but also broken person) in Mr Peanutbutter. Hell as we saw last season she's had Bojack too more recently as he's the one who took care of her quite lovingly, especially for him. Seriously go rewatch when Bojack goes and yanks her out of her place and then watches over her. It was so wholesome I'd say it's almost out of character for Bojack if not for how he also took care of her when she ran away from Cordovia and hid from Mr Peanutbutter and the world at his place for a really long time.
In the past Diane has been a good friend to Bojack several times as well, worth pointing out. Again she's not evil, she's broken. It's why I hate her personally but she's a fantastically written character. The fact that people try to excuse either Bojack or Diane and vilify the other only shows how strongly people connect with them because of how relatably broken they are.
@@adamdavis1648 Actually Diane has said that phrase many times. Yes, she was told it by her therapist but she adopted the mantra (where convenient).
You cannot excuse Diane for the therapist arc. As the "better" person and as the person who was fully informed about therapy and how it works and what you should do Diane knowingly made mistakes that, if done to her, she would consider borderline unforgiveable. Both in trying to active block someone in a very personal manner from getting the help she knew they needed AND for violating the sacred trust of therapy sessions. Basically, she knew better but did it anyways and that makes all the difference.
As far as Bojack suffering the most? I think that may actually be a fair statement. Remember, we've been inside Bojack's head for an episode. He spends literally his entire day shitting on himself for everything he's ever done. He's broken, he has quite severe depression. He feels guilt for his every action good/bad and yet he also feels helpless to stop it. Bojack's life as depicted in the series has been largely one of continued suffering and depression despite having money and fame.
And again, if you want to say Bojack is responsible for Sarah Lynn's death or "contributed" to it then you have to start saying Diane is responsible for the strangling or at contributed to it. Both the idea he contributed and the idea that "you are not responsible for the dysfunction of others" are both valid answers as it's essentially a difference in philosophical viewpoint. But they are mutually exclusive so you have to pick one.
I personally lean towards personal responsibility since blaming your actions on others makes it easy for people to excuse and enable themselves and prevent themselves from walking forwards.
Also it should be noted that if Bojack is partially responsible for Sarah Lynn's death and Diane is partially responsible for Bojack's strangling then Bojack and Diane's parent's are partially responsible for how fuck up they are. You can see how you can keep doing this to spread out the responsibility and make excuses. "I'm only this way because of my fucked up childhood" would be entirely congruent with that philosophy. Hence my issue with it. It's a philosophy that begs for slippery slopes.
IMO Biojck is responsible only for his behavior around Sarah Lynn. He's responsible for not having been a better friend. He's not responsible for her death. Likewise I say the same of Diane with Bojack's strangling. They are grown adult people, they are the ones that choose who they listen to + associate with and the responsibility for those choices is theirs. I say this as someone who has completely cut off half my family because they are bad people who had a bad influence on me and my life. They are not evil people, just very selfish and always lying/manipulating because of that. Often without realizing they are.
It's just funny how yesterday I was thinking in the video you make of the things you didn't like about season five, and how one of the points was the difference between bojack at the end of season four and the beginning of season five, and I realized that it was the first time bojack was alone in the series, and today you upload a video just saying that. I think what's really going to happen in the end, maybe next season, is that Bojack is going to stop most uses of drugs and alcohol or something's going to change that's going to immerse him in reality. Bojack will turn live action, and he'll see the world as it really is. That and/or he will die alone.

Shady Doorags well the way i see it the fact that you were able to recognise all this stuff proves what they were going for was clear even if season 5 wasn't perfect, I mean i liked it when I first watched it but then you started releasing all these videos pointing out what the season did wrong and you made your points well I got what you were saying and watching the season again i was aware of all those problems, any time i did disagree with you i mentioned it in the comments of that video, I kinda feel you were to hard on diane and the Philbert debate but that's just in hindsight when I first saw that episode i didn't get why she reacted like that either but since then I've been reluctantly put in a similar situation over some stupid joke on rick and morty about autism and I see it from her point of view now, I mean you can say death of the author and sure i get that but it's tough knowing how dangerous a certain misunderstanding of a work of fiction can be and it's hard when no one else listens to you, to be honest when I first saw the trailer i was worried season 5 was gonna screw over season 4 and now I'm worried the same about season 6, I guess I mentally prepared myself for the worst before the season started, all that said I liked the season cause though it made mistakes i feel like their was a good message in there one that i interpreted from that running sloth all those years ago and have used as a personal motto a lot recently and the fact that you were aware that's what the season was trying to say even if you didn't think they delivered it well or don't agree with the message is to me an acknowledgement of what the season did right even if you don't see it that way

There's another thing going on : Todd and PC have taken their distances from Bojack and hardly talk with him anymore, this also isolated him a bit more and put all the pressure of his relationships on Diane who was herself in bad place after the divorce...
Philbert was also an allegory for BJH as a show and some of the fandom. It's like when people say they relate to and take pride in being like Rick from Rick and Morty and other similar characters as well. "That's not the point of the show".

Okay, but Beatrice called Bojack in secound season and told him "I am sorry". It's not enough too, but it is something? She wasn't nice in this conversation, but I think her apologize was honest. Why everybody don't remember that?
People do remember that, and she wasn't apologizing for what she did, she was apologizing that Bojack was doomed to be miserable. Even in trying to help him, she was still telling him that he didn't deserve to exist and that he couldn't be happy.

And she is sorry for this situation, she is aware that situation made him broken. But maybe I misunderstoot it. And sorry if my english is bad.

She almost hinted at the latter, but she never explicitly said it. It's like she was TRYING to do the right thing, but she couldn't bring herself to actually say "I'm sorry for how treated you" because she was too afraid and/or prideful.

What about Diane? She helps Bojack in the end and that's what she was always trying to do but I feel like she was a big factor to Bojack spiraling out of control because of the stunts she pulled on Philbert.

Bojack horseman has a theme every season were each season a new important woman character enters bojack’s life. The characters are Wanda, Ana Spanikopita, hollyhock, Gina. These women who arrive on the new season are important and teach bojack some kind of lesson. I don’t know if the show writers intended to be important to the story or not, but very interesting nevertheless. If a new important female character is introduced in season 6 then we’ll know if it’s important

Diane this season kinda reminded me of Danaerys's downward spiral in s8 of game of thrones...both of them started of as powerful women who wanted to change the world but something or the other causes them to snap and do something bad without remorse.... Danaerys destroying Kings Landing and Diane taunting Bojack with the whole Philbert thing...since they were put through so much...this broke them and caused these two to have a face-heel turn. And both Diane and Danaerys saw their actions as good.
Thats kind of like marceline. She wants to become human because after a thousand years she was still " messed up" but she ended up dealing with the trouble she really had through BMO and the gang.
I NEED season 6
My favorite line in this season (aside from Bojack's eulogy) is the thing he says before he checks into rehab
"Hello, I am Bojack Horseman. Obviously you know who I am because I'm very famous, and also we called ahead, and I am here because... I need help."
What struck me the most about the end of this season particularly the last scene of the last episode is how it looks like Diane and Bojack may have completed their purposes in each others lives. The last scene looked like Diane was not only leaving Bojack at rehab but possibly leaving him behind altogether. I think she needed to be away from him just as much as he needed to go to rehab. It seems like Diane taking him to rehab was her way of ending the toxicity of their relationship. Their dynamic should be interesting in the next season.
Season 5 episode 6 really got to me.
Yeah, then we'll have to see how he is able to deal with Diane's death when coming out of rehab.
I predict he'll start seeing her ghost like Philbert was seeing Fritz

I hope not. Maybe the writers let that "driving trough a tunel" thing so people makes theories like this. Besides they already made the 'died in a crash" "unexpected death" and "dying after chronical decease" plots. If Diane dies (that I don't think will happen) they need another idea.

I feel to be honest Beatrice is kind of a toxic person who in many ways exhibits the need to be validated even though she has no spine in a lot of the early conversation she has with both Shack comes off as though he’s a means to an end and not actual romantic care for each other I bet if they were never actors she would’ve had a real interest for Bojak as a person.
I just want to make a point, that the only reason Bojack and Gina went out was because of bojacks pill addiction.
And watching him choking Gina is hard to watch. Oh god. I'm sorry, but that's just so wrong... 😮😯
The other major stressor that was left out of the list was The Lightbulb Scene, both the episode and the scene it's self. During the episode, Bojack tells Flip: Philbert's writer, to change one of the show's nude scenes because it makes Gina uncomfortable. Flip changes it to feature Bojack nude instead. Bojack refuses to do it and Flip starts fighting with him and trying to tear Bojack's robe (which Bojack is naked under) open. The entire scene plays out and sounds uncomfortably close to a sexual assault attempt. While Bojack does eventually agree to do the scene and Flip does kind of apologize. This situation was and probably still is on some level very stressful for Bojack. Many survivers of sexual assault and abuse do end up developing addictions as a result of the trama they've been through. Not saying this excuses any of the things Bojack has done but I thought it was worth noting.
