In this video I will be sharing a building code I found that should help do it yourselfers who will be raising ceilings. Extra nails might be required when raising roof rafter ties when placing them between 1/10 and 1/3 of the lower over all heigh measurement under the roof ridge.
Here is one of the building code references.

My wife and I are "renovating" a home built by the original and only home owner in the 1960s. The load bearing wall in the living room had rotted and eaten by termites, so we took the opportunity to raise the ceiling with rafter ties. Your previous videos gave a lot of insight into the best approach to take. Now the roof structure feels much more solid and we turned 2, 14' foot rooms into 1 28' room. Funny side note on the nailing schedule. The original ceiling joists were held in with only 2, hand hammered 20d nails. 4\12 roof. 24" OC. The outside wall pulled away about 1/2" over 60 years.. only because they were not lapped sufficiently above the center wall.

Another great video. Love your content, Greg! I've learned a lot about safety and proper building codes watching your channel.

    Great information!
I'm 70 and did a lot of 'stick built or cut and stack' work in my 20s. We used 'collar ties' more it seems back in those days along with running kick-braces to stiffen up and support our work. Todays 'nail-gun' splintering of truss or rafter-joists as connected to top plates here in CA is criminal and destroys the over-all stability of the structure. A lot of the old ways have become cost-prohibitive due to labor and a lack of skilled craftsmen.
Are there still great builders out there? YES! but they're booked out 3 years in advance.

theres gotta be a better way than 51 nails! the wood would probably split before the nails give!

Very few framing nail guns are capable of shooting a 16d common nail most are 16 sinker. Engineers and builders are having a standoff. Increased use of steel connectors and increased cost. Can't help but wonder if insurance companies influence building code. Love this guys videos for practical approaches to structural problems.

Hey Greg, I have 2x6 rafter ties spanning around 20’ in my second floor ceiling. They consist of 2 2x6’s butted together with a sistering 2x6 spanning the butt joint. An engineer came out today and said we can cut the rafter ties and insert a beam and joist hanger the ties to the beam. How would I go about supporting the tension in the ties while cutting the gap for the beam to sit in?

Run 2x4 or 2x6 rat runs to temporarily pick up any loose ends until tied back into the new beam with hangers. ..support any load bearing points ..cut yourself and extra 1/8 to 1/4 inch width to fit the beam. Pocket the beam into the wall or red steel at each end.

I might categorize this under videos explaining building concepts that might not seem to make sense at first to novices.
