The Grateful Dead has a massive catalog. This song was probably their most “pop” radio played song. A real jam band and it’s a culture. These guys are very talented musicians. ❤️
More Dead!!! You need to check out “Fire on the Mountain” “Scarlett Begonias” and “Sugar Magnolia”. Honestly though just listen to more Dead. Don’t be afraid of the live videos, that’s where they shine. This band has had a more profound effect on me than any other artist
Grateful Dead were all about spreading positive vibes, even though the skulls and band name might suggest otherwise. A lot of people don’t like them but they were the top grossing tour band for a number of years, so they apparently were doing something right ! A good Dead show was a real bump up for one’s spirit - they had the ability to connect with people on a deep level when they were “on”.
This is a memory and a half. Learned these lyrics with my dad when I was too young to understand them, dancing on his feet. Actually made me cry a little.
This guy gets it. Tbf, this is the most commercially successful Grateful Dead song that launched them into being one of the biggest drawing touring acts by the end of the 1980's. There's so much to say about this band to someone who has never listened before. Glad you enjoyed this song. The Dead are best known for their live shows and recordings where they blend basically every genre of American music and musically improvise the performances of their songs night after night with ever changing setlists. They also have lots of great studio tracks and while I don't discourage you from listening to their big studio tracks like "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," "Dire Wolf," "Box of Rain," Friend of the Devil," "Ripple," "Brokedown Palace," "Terrapin Station", etc. I would definitely suggest checking out some of the high quality live recordings that are available online or streaming platforms. Try typing in Europe 72 on youtube and check out some of the songs on that album, which is probably their most well-known and beloved live album. You can't go wrong with the Grateful Dead. They played for 30 years so they have a massive catalog of music to explore. One of the most fulfilling deep-dive bands there is.
Definitely. I would suggest you watch them do "Not Fade Away" live at Orchard Park NY. Or just listen to anything off "Working Man's Dead" or "American Beauty". I don't think you'll be disappointed.
This song caused a re-energizing of the Deadhead phenomenon. Touch Of Grey was the Grateful Dead's one and only top ten hit, it spawned an MTV video that is a lot of fun to watch, but it was a very different song from a lot of their material. And they do have A LOT of material. Well over 400 songs played on stage, over thirty years of touring and thousands of shows in front of millions of people, even me. Here's a few: U.S. Blues, Deal, Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream, Scarlet Begonias/Fire On The Mountain(aka Scarlet/Fire), Estimated Prophet/Eyes Of The World (aka Estimated/Eyes), Morning Dew, One More Saturday Night, Standing On The Moon, The Other One, Terrapin Station, Turn on Your Lovelight, Greatest Story Ever Told, etc.
"Oh well a touch of grey kinda suits you anyway." I always saw this song as a sort of embrace of aging, mortality, and the fact that nobody gets every single one of their dreams fulfilled--there's always something left on the table. At least, that's how I interpret the laundry list of things broken (rent not paid, dog not fed, etc.). The band was middle-aged when this song came out, and they had the literal "touch of grey" in their hair. If you ever see the video, they take it further visually by being portrayed as skeleton puppets (obviously also a play on the band's name). It's a song that affirms life without being sentimental about it or being bothered that it doesn't last forever.
Uh oh. You could go down that road forever. They've got there own sound and even culture. Like them or not, they're one of the most important bands in music history. Cheers
I remember when this came out. As far as I recall, it was the Dead’s first MTV style video, 1987. (I’m probably wrong.) You definitely should listen to some stuff from way before this. Wikipedia says they were “active” since 1965. “Sugar Magnolia” “US Blues” “Casey Jones” “Truckin’” “Uncle John’s Band” “Scarlet Begonias”
When I heard it on the radio, I was like, wtf? 1: Dead were NEVER on radio 2: I already knew the song 3: Didn't know title til then And, as usual, no printed lyrics - an unthinkable concept now.
Grew up watching this video on MTV in the 80’s. Definitely check it out lol. What a song. I think this is their biggest hit and they’ve been making music since the 60’s. They’ve had a “long strange trip” ... a very interesting story.

I love the "breathing room," in most Grateful Dead songs. Like this one, for example, follows a standard pop structure...expect instead of a "middle 8" it has a "middle 32", so you get to chill out for a bit to the instrumentals, and a laid back guitar solo. It really affects the pace of the whole thing.
Yessss! This has always been one of my favorite aspects of the Dead. It’s so ridiculously palpable when you see them live. You can feel the space in the music, it seems like it’s really alive and breathing, they are playing around each other instead of on top or even with each other. So hard to describe but an unmistakable feeling.

This song is awesome! I also love the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor Cherry Garcia and the The Jerry Garcia Company that specializes in neckties inspired by the art of Jerry Garcia.
I think of Jerry Garcia whenever I listen to this song. Having diabetes myself, I always paid close attention to news about Jerry and his diabetes. It almost took him so many times and was deeply saddened when a heart attack finally did. Thanks for your reaction, J..... Looking forward to more as it looks like you might be on the brink of becoming a Deadhead. lol Take care and be well. Peace.
React to more dead!!! They are the only ones who do what they do! They’ve brought so much joy and clarity through us “deadheads”. Their lyrics give you so much motivation and love! Definitely get more into it! :)
My brother took me to see the Dead in concert in 1987 when I was 21 at Park West outside SLC, UT, for the first time. I was on crutches due to a major sprain. Going up the mountain hurt like hell at the beginning. Due to the herbal refreshment being passed around, going down the mountain at the end wasn't nearly as bad!
The Dead were/are incredibly VERSATILE! They have so many different sounds that they can't be judged on the basis of one song. If you listen to "Ripple", "Throwing Stones" and "Shakedown Street" (just f'rinstance), it's hard to believe they are all the same band.

Grateful Dead were famous for basically being on tour for literally THREE decades. "Deadheads" weren't just fans, they'd follow the band around on tour. Ultimate drug concerts, really. (Just pot.) One of my favourite stickers ever was on the back of VW van that said "Who are the Grateful Dead and why are they following me?" I always laugh at that one. From the Guardian Newspaper: "While some bands are known for being studioheads, others have made a career out of being on the road, only stopping occasionally (if at all) to record the obligatory album to keep the record companies happy. The obvious extreme would be the Grateful Dead, who with the exception of 1975, when the band was on hiatus, and a few foreign sojourns, pretty much toured the US constantly from the winter of 1965 until summer 1995, when Jerry Garcia went to the great commune in the sky." And the Grateful Dead are also known for playing the longest concerts. One lasted over 5 hours.
This is an amazing song, but I do guarantee you need to see the music video for this one. It is quite the experience, and it adds so much to the song. :)
True story: My wife's mother (God be good to her) was rather apprehensive when we told her that some of the music at our wedding (some 30+ years ago) would be the Dead. A friend had made a tape that would be played over the PA system while guests were arriving and being seated. So my wife is getting dressed, "Ripple" comes on, and she looks over to see her mother swaying back & forth with the music. So much for her apprehension! ; - D
Every silver lining’s got a touch of grey. Normally the silver lining is associated with something potentially positive that can come out of thing that may not be very good but even that isn’t necessarily all good, hence the “every silver linings got a touch of grey(ambiguity). Nothing is all good and nothing is all bad. It’s better to just let go and ride each moment without judgement just letting every situation just come and go without clinging to good moments or resisting bad moments.
Wow!! I think you're a Dead Head Jay. Lots of people back in the day would follow them around and were fans called Dead Heads. Fun stuff and great music.
I watch a lot of reaction videos on UA-cam and you consistently get it. Also, you seem geniune. So much better than a lot of the other self absorbed UA-camrs that talk too much but have nothing really to say. 😎
Hey Javon, it's great that you're checking out the Grateful Dead. They are a world unto themselves. Two things.....they're meant to be listened to live. The studio is just a laboratory for their live stuff. They often change the way they play a song from show to show. They do great covers of other people's stuff too. Second, they have many, many better songs than this. This was their one journey into the world of MTV. They rarely play this one live. It does have that typicak Jerry sound and Phil's bass as always is perfect. You want an eye opener and to get a feel for the band and their fans? There was a film made called Sunshine and Daydreams about their 1972 show in Veneta, Oregon. Jack Straw or China Cat Sunflower. Not the usual line up because one of their drummers was on sabbatical to kick heroin.
The Grateful Dead has a massive catalog. This song was probably their most “pop” radio played song. A real jam band and it’s a culture. These guys are very talented musicians. ❤️

"While some bands are known for being studioheads, others have made a career out of being on the road, only stopping occasionally (if at all) to record the obligatory album to keep the record companies happy. The obvious extreme would be the Grateful Dead, who with the exception of 1975, when the band was on hiatus, and a few foreign sojourns, pretty much toured the US constantly from the winter of 1965 until summer 1995, when Jerry Garcia went to the great commune in the sky."
And the Grateful Dead are also known for playing the longest concerts. One lasted over 5 hours.
My senior class song!
You're awesome! How about honoring the best female, American jazz singer of all time: Miss Sarah Vaughn performing "Misty" "live from Sweden.
Really surprised that you haven't done The Grateful Dead before.
Jerry Garcia used custom-made guitars, that's why they always sounded different from most guitars.
Wonderful DEAD song.
Ripple...listen to it. The best.
Brown eyed women for the storytelling. Eyes of the world for the jamz
RIP Jerry Garcia....thanks J....
This is an amazing song, but I do guarantee you need to see the music video for this one. It is quite the experience, and it adds so much to the song. :)
I second Sugar Magnolia. Great tune
The Grateful Dead are my favorite band ever Iam a Deadhead
You are my favorite “reactor”!!!
This was a really good reaction. More Dead please.
Ripple. One of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded.
Lots of truth in these lyrics...
I watch a lot of reaction videos on UA-cam and you consistently get it. Also, you seem geniune. So much better than a lot of the other self absorbed UA-camrs that talk too much but have nothing really to say. 😎
"Hell in a Bucket", "Truckin", "Sugar Magnolia"....there's a might big list!
Haven't seen anyone mention "Me and My Uncle" yet!
Great song Jay🌹❤️
Always bizarre whenever I'm in a supermarket and hear this issuing from the house P.A.
You should really go back and find the real reason Mickey Hart left the grateful dead in 1971... it was not heroin
The video for this one is fun if you ever want to check it out in your spare time. :)
I give it a 10 cuz you can dance to it🐓
