The Menstrual Cycle | 3D Animation (2/2)

- This 3D animation explains the hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle begins with menstrual bleeding, marking the follicular phase’s first day. When the follicular phase begins, levels of estrogen and progesterone are low. As a result, the top layers of the uterus’s thickened lining break down and are shed, and menstrual bleeding occurs.
About this time, the pituitary gland starts sending follicle-stimulating hormone to your ovaries, stimulating the development of 5 to 20 follicles in the ovaries. Each follicle contains an immature egg and produces estrogen. One follicle will soon begin to grow faster than others. This is called the dominant follicle. As the follicle grows, the levels of estrogen in the blood rise significantly. This increase in estrogen begins to inhibit the secretion of the follicle-stimulating hormone. The fall in follicle-stimulating hormone allows smaller follicles to die off. They are, in effect, "starved" of follicle-stimulating hormone.
The increasing amount of estrogen in your body also ensures that the lining of your womb thickens with nutrients and blood. This is so that if you do get pregnant, the fertilized egg will have everything it needs to grow.
The ovulatory phase begins with a rise in the levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. The surge in the luteinizing hormone triggers one of the most prominent follicles to pop open and release its egg, which heads into the fallopian tube and starts its journey toward the uterus. Ovulation usually occurs 16 to 32 hours after the beginning of the surge, around day 14 of the menstrual cycle.
During the luteal phase, the levels of the luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone decrease. The ruptured follicle closes after releasing the egg and forms a corpus luteum, which produces estrogen and progesterone, which cause the lining of the uterus to thicken even more. If an egg is fertilized, progesterone supports early pregnancy. But if no fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum will break down between 9 and 11 days after ovulation. This results in a drop in estrogen and progesterone levels, bringing us back to the first stage of menstruation if no pregnancy has occurred.

Have been searching for videos to explain this whole Menstrual cycle and yours is by FAR the BEST - so easy to understand/ incredibly informative and so helpful it's animated (the others just skip steps/ too complex) - thank you, thank you!! :)
literally haven't understood the menstrual cycle for 2 years, and now I understood it in 2 min.
Absolutely fantastic content!
Thanks! 😍
This video made me understand this in just 2 mins what our teacher couldn't explain in 2 hours. Now the whole cycle is imprinted in my brain. 😅 Outstanding animation, hats off to the creator for making such amazing content ❤😊👏🏻
Keep making more of these as they're so helpful 😀

Thank you so much. Good luck with the MCAT! 💪
OMG. It's amazing that you spent merely two and a half minutes to explain all the contents in a 2-hour lecture. I don't even need to look at the text to explain the hormonal changes during the whole cycle simply just because I watched this!
You've just made my day! Thanks! :-)

Follicular phase start with the egg or the menstruation the breakdown i want to know the starting point which you said in the first video that it begins with mestriation and 'marking the follicular phase day 1' so the beginning is the maturity of the egg
@@marivicveloso1074 the maturation of the egg in the ovary, yes.
The good explanations can be found anywhere, but seldom does a student stumble upon such an effectively designed animation, which is enough in itself to have the cycle embedded in our memory. Hats off to the creators. Your effort is appreciated greatly!

I have a silly question. Could the luteinizing hormone (that pops open the egg by softening the membrane) also be the hormone that softens the hip joints right before giving birth? And that being said, could it theoretically cause a hernia in the spinal cord?
This is not a silly question at all. Yes, LH has a certain role in associated with softening pelvic tissues during pregnancy (I'm not sure if it softens the hip joints specifically). As far as I know, LH cannot be directly responsible for causing hernias in the spinal cord.
Thank you Doctor!

Make a " why some females get pain and some not?
so basically this happens because the inside assumes an egg may start growing but when it doesn't that protective layer is shed so a new one can start again otherwise it's used to protect the growing egg that becomes a baby

How can i memories this? Its on my test and i cant memories the phases
im in pain and decided to understand why im going through this pain
How do we know this? I'm not doubting it, but which studies and scientists can we attribute it to? It's incredibly interesting.
Good question. I've never really thought about that. I assume through lots of bloodwork (keep tracking of the rise and fall of hormones) + they already knew - out of experience - that there was a cycle that repeated itself every +- 28 days.
@@dr.paulinemoyaert Gotcha. That makes sense. I just wish we knew the names of the people who worked to figure it out because, obviously, it's very important and they deserve credit. Cheers, doctor.
@@bobobandy9382it's not the name of a few. This resulting knowledge is the results of decades of studies.
@@bobobandy9382 The list of scientists and doctors who have now worked on this over the last century and are still working on this to get the numerous unseen and unmentioned strands of the theory of this phenomenon accurately in place so that they can use this scientific knowledge to not only understand it but to prevent or treat medical conditions arising from it must now be running into the thousands.
If you Google something like "scientific papers on the menstrual cycle" or "medical papers on the menstrual cycle" you will surely come up with a very long list of papers which will list their authors!
You can then track back to the earliest ones available if that's what you want to do ...
Is the secondary oocyte an immature ova ? When it does not fertilize?

Can you get pregnant couple days after menstruation? I mean is it theoretically possible? Does uterus have acidic environment, or the sperm cell can survive there for 15 days until a new egg is produced?
Yes, sperm can live up to 5 days. So if you have sex right after your wife's period and she ovulates on day 10, your wife can get pregnant (5 days of period, you have sex on day 5, sperm can live for 5 days, so it can fertilize the egg that has been released on day 10). This is only possible if the woman ovulates (very) early.
-- The cervix/vagina has an acidic environment, not the uterus
- Sperm cell cannot survive for 15 days, max. 5 days
Is it possible for multiple eggs to be released?
Only one ovulation can happen per cycle. You can, however, ovulate two (or more) eggs at the same time. When this happens, there is the potential to conceive fraternal (non-identical) twins if both eggs are fertilized.
Having two separate eggs released at different times within the same cycle doesn't happen.
If you are on birth control because it stops the egg coming down, do you still have a period
Yes, you will still have your period.
@@dr.paulinemoyaert how
Yes you do but it depends on the birth control method.
Mam there is a not specific time of my periods month there is clotting also in blood
That sounds normal, don't worry too much about it. If you really do worry, I would advise you to see a doctor.
@@dr.paulinemoyaert thank you
I'm not getting period this month
Crazy I was curious about how the , period blood forms
👍😊
Does the unfertlised ova come out with the menses or not ?
Yes
@dr.paulinemoyaert how? I thought it d*es during its passage in the fallopian tube ? Can u explain it to me more please?
Is there a way that i can stop my period temporarily?
You can take the pill continuously (without stopping - no planned hormone-free breaks). This is a good option. (Yes, skipping periods is safe)
Or you can go for a hormonal IUD, they lessen the number of periods you get and some people stop getting their periods altogether. More information about IUDs can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/frCnYufoKU0/v-deo.html

And now after 1 month my is 6 days late and my stomach keeps paining, my discharge is coming regularly too much.

I have irregular periods . The last time I had it was last week. But the last time prior to that was last year March (so it’s been a total year).
Question:What could be the cause?
Has my uterine lining been building up for a year and something finally triggered it to come down?
It can be PCOS. This is something you should discuss with your family doctor.
