Love alpina. They have them I them in middle at my dealer in Sweden since recently. Bmw does good fun cool cars and alpina makes them special, worth saving.
My 2011 BMW 335ix has been pretty reliable. It has 85K miles, and $8500 total maintenance costs so far (including tires and new battery, but it will need new brakes SOON). But, when my 2007 Ford Focus was recently totaled, it had 102K miles and $3600 total maintenance costs (including tires and new battery, and still had lots of life on its ORIGINAL brakes). So, the BMW is just under THREE TIMES the maintenance cost ($/mile) of my super-reliable Ford Focus (which required ZERO repairs during its life). But, isn't that to be expected in a performance sedan? Am I wrong? I really don't know . . . .
@@thepenitent2022 85K isn't a lot of miles, BMW's turn into money pits once they get much over 100K. Personally, I'd rather have a Lexus---maintenance isn't nearly as expensive, and they rarely break (even at high miles)
In difference to BMW M, Audi RS or Mercedes AMG, when you look into an Alpina's paperwork it'll say "Alpina", not BMW. Plus, at least over here in germany, they don't run BMW badges.
Hey Hoovie, have you bought a Lincoln Mark VIII? 3:50 The second time I see this white one, before that it was parked in front of your house And what about the BMW Z3M Coupe ?
Love the Alpinas. Make sure you check the supercharger, it's a bit more complicated than just that. It's actually a radial compressor, which acts as a supercharger at low revs and with a clutch, at high rpms it becomes a turbocharger. Only time this has ever been built in an Alpina, B5, B6 and B7. Before that and afterwards it's all been turbos. These things are really expensive to replace and they tend to last only around 50-100k miles. Check if the housing has any oil leakage, run your finger underneath it and see if there's an oil film, if so make sure to see if oil goes into the cooler. Check the numbers on the part, make sure it's one of the newer revisions (...781? not sure...) these engines should have next to no oil consumption, watch for that after fixing the valve stems. Also check the hose that vents the camshaft housing, not sure what it's called in English, it tends to crack, replace with latest spec. There's also the infamous water leak at the front of the engine that all V8 may suffer, just 2 rubber seals that are broken, but to replace them the engine has to come out --- or you replace it with a collapsible water pipe (google it), much easier and cheaper. When the engine is open anyways, this might be a good precaution. Also, check the throttle body, it's from an Audi A6, I believe, and has stupid plastic gears inside that age pretty badly. There are super cheap, easy to install metal replacements... My advice on this one: fix it, detail it, keep it, Alpinas tend to really go up in value.... it's a sleeper!
Please continue your content. I love your channel. Like yourself I buy vehicles that I shouldn't (I currently have 46). Unlike yourself I perform my own repairs so I spend much less money than yourself. I will continue watching. I'm waiting for you to have an uneventful drive in the '66 Corvette. Thank you much!
cheaper than I expected. My local BMW shop stated that their valve stem replacement cost ran about $7,000. Tyler should definitely have the supercharger looked at and then do a refresh on the internals due to the plastic gear bits in there wearing due to age and heat. This may help the supercharger last a bit longer. It won't be cheap to replace that if it goes out.

@@James-oo1yq 280hp is fine, dunno about 335hp in the long run though. N47 is not bad, but that is a lot of power. Cooling will surely be an issue if one presses on for a while. Depends on the driving you do I suppose.

Yes you are right Steve and then ppl are comparing this car to regular cars and thats really wrong. This car has 500 hp and 700 nm its massive engine that takes its toll on gaskets. As the owner of 2 Alpinas I know how deep you can go. 1997 B10 V8 and a 1998 B6 Touring. The thing is, they're truly worth it.
The driving experience is sublime and they are so rare that any little imperfections are forgiven.
Not a fan of BMWs but that is absolutely gorgeous. Would love to see it repaired and driven for as long as that is sustainable. All the best for the arrival of the next little Hoovie.
Why no fault code reading with the OBD-reader? 🥺🤷🏼♂️ that’s my favorite part every time
Probably because the obd system was broken too, it's a BMW after all
OBD won’t tell you you’re down on compression, have leaking stem seals or oil leaks.
It was mentioned that the mechanic had looked at the car already with the previous owner. So they are doing the things that hadn't already been done.
Davo G but what about all the warning chimes when he was driving? 😏
Loving watching all the broken BMW content when I'm sitting in the garage looking at the torn subframe outta my E36 m3
It was nice meeting you last Saturday Tyler!
If you repair the valve steam seal, i would recommend repairing the water pipe too, because it will get broke after this very fast, or is maybe already. For a cheap repair of the Water Pipe, buy the "sebek water pipe", then the repair will be alot cheaper.
I started working for a BMW dealer on 2006 i remember the e65 alpina b7 I think ours listed for around $120K at the time. Love the vids keep up the good work!
Every time you mention hood struts, I'm expecting Watch JR Go to show up and replace them with a big smile.
Same here watchjrgo
Is a pro with hood struts.
My MacGiyver fix for hood struts, as practiced in my 85 Audi 5000 turbo. Vise grip on the strut to keep it from collapsing.
@@alphakky ~ I keep a pair in the trunk, but I often just hold the hood up with my head if I'm just checking oil..
Hoovie, your videos make my Alfa feel like a Toyota.
@RPsketcher 84 Spider. If it reads little over 0 on the oil pressure during warm idle, it's operating normally for an Alfa gauge.
Nalgafria great little car and a fun one to. Had a yellow 78 and a 74 Fiat 124 Spider. That back in my college days. They broke a lot, and every time I went to pick up them from the service garage, I was decided to sell. But every time when coming back home I would decide to get the another chance. Keep that for some 6 years. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@paulog8813 That's where I am right now! I was ready to sell it, but top down with a sunny day plus the sound of the headers and straight pipe make it so difficult.
RPsketcher 159 owner here too.. Currently leaking oil like this BMW!
@@Nalgafria coudn't agree more. If I can ad something to help you: I don't regreed keeping the little convertibles for so long.
Love alpina. They have them I them in middle at my dealer in Sweden since recently. Bmw does good fun cool cars and alpina makes them special, worth saving.
Good Stuff Hoovie. Happy to see you're keeping this one running.
Very very reasonable repair costs!! Your mechanic is legit!
Please interview Johnny, at some point for us.
I'd love to know more of him.
What do you want to know about me?
Born in Albania. Moved to Us in 2005. Been working on BMW since then. Open German Motor Works about 4 months ago.
Johnny Karaj OHHH, Shqipe! Shume Forte je bre!!
That car is the most beautiful turd I've ever seen. Great cosmetic condition considering the mileage and neglect
"The dark ages of quality"----they never left, they're no better today
dark ages of design for sure as well.
And they weren't better before either, people just seem to forget the bad parts of previous ownerships.
Am I wrong? I really don't know . . . .
@@thepenitent2022 Ford is still shit tho
@@thepenitent2022 85K isn't a lot of miles, BMW's turn into money pits once they get much over 100K. Personally, I'd rather have a Lexus---maintenance isn't nearly as expensive, and they rarely break (even at high miles)
In difference to BMW M, Audi RS or Mercedes AMG, when you look into an Alpina's paperwork it'll say "Alpina", not BMW.
Plus, at least over here in germany, they don't run BMW badges.
Johnny is awesome, very honest guy. You should bring more cars to him.
Hey Hoovie, have you bought a Lincoln Mark VIII? 3:50 The second time I see this white one, before that it was parked in front of your house
And what about the BMW Z3M Coupe ?
Ooo I hope so, it's on *my* ridiculous hooptie shopping list. (that or an Aurora)
I have been asking for a mark 8 for awhile!
I used to own a ‘97 Mark VIII LSC, loved it and miss it dearly. It’s on my list of shouldn’t have sold, and want to own again
“It’s a BMW.” Truer words have never been spoken.
But they still keep selling and selling and selling,WOW..
Everyone, including Hoovie, was shocked at how low the price was.
13:18 I love how frank he is about it. "It's a BMW!" said the BMW repair tech. It sure is.
13:13 mark
Tyler: its gonna break again after you put everything back in right?
Johnny: It's a bmw man!
Me: LMFAO most accurate comment from Johnny
"it's a bmw" - any mechanic that knows bmws and their inevitable break downs
BMW sucks.
BMW : BROKE MY WALLET.
I had a low mileage E46, and can attest to this fact.
Why would anyone buy a used one for more than scrap value?
I ve owned an E46, E60 and F10. If you look after them, there great cars.
I use this channel as financial advise thanks Hoovie...
Love that 2002 in the background! I've got one just like it.
Johnny always seems so happy, and for the life of me I can't figure out why?
Because Tyler keeps buying BMWs. Steady stream of revenue.
Johnny is happy because he fixes BMW's and doesn't own one.
Johnny does like german cars he owns a Volkswagon.
Because he's taking huge chunks of money from fools who buy BMWs
I'm happy because we only live once.
And I own 3 BMW and 3 Volkswagen

Every time you post one of these diagnosis videos I just think back to how you sold a totally sorted Cayenne and then topped that and sold a totally sorted freakin Land Cruiser lol. You truly are the Ultimate UA-cam Automotive Masochist
Glad you're getting it fixed, it definitely deserves to be sorted. Such a cool car. Didn't realize Alpina did all the stuff on the underbody as well. Very cool, great review!
"Yes yes, I know you are very broken"
>proceeds to rev the engine in the next clip
7:34 is when the inspection starts, you're welcome
Alpina works alongside BMW in the same factory. I have an 08 D3 Bi-Turbo, and would love to see one get upgraded Turbos...but don't want to regret it. I think you should do it first 🙄
one guy got about 335hp with stock turbos and different fuel pump, is that enough power for you from a diesel 4 banger?
jaboxs Plenty.
Stock fuel pump max seems to be about 270 hp with changed intercooler.
Bet you didnt expect this answer on one of this kind of videos, huh?
jaboxs Thanks. That's pretty much the figure I expected. I think BMW quotes 285hp, but I've had a pump/turbo upgrade in mind for a year now, but the car has been so reliable for this era of BMW I don't want to risk that.
@@James-oo1yq 280hp is fine, dunno about 335hp in the long run though. N47 is not bad, but that is a lot of power. Cooling will surely be an issue if one presses on for a while. Depends on the driving you do I suppose.

It’s junk
Don’t get me wrong they were amazing new but after 3 years they are garbage. Best bmw is a base model
So true
Very true. My mom has a problem-free base model E60. She’s had it since new. 130K miles with routine maintenance.
Only their smaller cars are reliable. I’ve had multiple 3 series cars and the were actually reliable. The bigger cars and the X series are just piles of junk.
Best BMW is one you get to drive, but owned by someone else.
MAD MADOC MAN actually, the best BMW is the one you don’t buy. ;)
You're not going to faint are you? -
GOD, I love Hoove's Mechanics!
They're the straight men to his crazy antics that make his videos so entertaining.......at least until he declares bankruptcy..... better incorporate this business soon!
Seems like an expensive way to do stem seals, plenty of BMW dealers even do N62 stem seals with the heads on.
Might be a good time to do the valley plate and cooling pipes if they're coming off though.
Spend the 5k and dont worry we are the ones who pay for covering your disasters and nightmares
When these engines lose a lot of oil the vanos adjusters advance and can't retreat. Hence misfires.
Yeagh vanos seal failure common
That is exactly right.
@@derekmcfadyen127 Not a vanos seal problem. I've replaced vanos seals on my 540i with a M62tu, this car has an N62 non-tu
I would also check the vacuum pump seals on this engine.
I don't get it. I mean, I too like joking about the questionable reliability. But I mean.. if someone drove 170,000 MILES, not even KM, it's gotta be somewhat reliable. I mean.. I guess it just became neglected at the end of its ownership?
Yea... it looks great and if its comfortable and handles good it will have a good motor for less than 10 grand? What the hell ... go for it!!
This is what every used BMW shopper is thinking
Cars really should be able to go to 200,000 miles without major issues. Many do (Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Porsche, etc).
Yes you are right Steve and then ppl are comparing this car to regular cars and thats really wrong. This car has 500 hp and 700 nm its massive engine that takes its toll on gaskets. Probably had some previous owners not maintain it properly and you can see that in the engine bay and how the engine looks like. Makes me cry! I have a B5 S and know what I talk about, you need to change oil regulary. Im going to change gaskets on my car too becaue of minor leaks and that something you have to be prepared if you buy this kind of car. If you buy a cheap ordinary familycar then this kind of money is too much regarding the walue of the car. If he fix this B7 it will keep him happy for a long time and the value will only rise as it ages when its in good condition.
This guy is an honest mechanic. period.
Oh man, memories of an 850i 6MT that I bought cheap. 2 years later, needed to change the intake gaskets. 4 of them. For $300 each.
Between that car and this channel, I can't seem to let my 90 mile-round-trip daily driver FR-S go and get something more family-friendly like a 3 wagon.
