FULL CIRCLE MOMENT this past weekend. To begin, I never leave the state, unless it's for work-- poetry and teaching has brought me to many places and has given me great experiences. The last time I was in Massachussetts was in 2017, when I went to Hawley with my MFA cohort for a weekend retreat. I was still pretty green and learning where I fit in the community. It's at that retreat where I wrote some poems like "Papi Pichón Develops Habichuelology" and "Papi Pichón Authenticates 'Puerto Rican' Through the Sonnet". Before then, I never had such a process where I simply sat with my work without the subconscious meanderings of time and outside responsibilities. Now, during #nationalpoetrymonth in 2024, I was invited to Amherst College to perform poetry from my new book, where these poems were written so many years ago. This event was put together by student-led organizations across the campus and it was lovely to see our young people put together such a lovely weekend for poets like us.
