    Museum worker here: There are museums out there with lots of usable computers and playable video games. But they are constantly needing repair. Because anything the public can touch, the public will break. In almost all cases it's not because they intend to, but because things wear out with use. There's even those people with no self-awareness, no understanding of boundaries, or pure malevolence who will cross any boundary you put out to play with artifacts they can't immediately touch. I've had the public try to open locked vitrines to try to touch things, and they usually genuinely have no idea that THEY shouldn't touch things. Other people obviously shouldn't touch, but they aren't aware that the same rules apply to them. I've had former auto plant workers break into cars on display but "it's OK, man, I built that car." The pure malevolence is usually teenagers in groups; individually, they're perfectly fine. But a group is deadly.

    As someone who did go to the Franklin Institute for the video game exhibit that happened a couple years back I must say it was quite disappointing in practice as it felt like very little was actually provided in terms of historical, textual information about the games, designers, etc and it felt more like a video game playground for kids who were yanking the chair of the Outrun, sit-down variant they had rather than actually providing an in-depth look at gaming's history. Although awesome conceptually, I do think that museums should be more text based or at least up the age restriction to ensure that guests are not abusing the equipment or at least parents should better monitor their children (which is very unlikely, unfortunately). But overall, would love to see gaming to be featured more in museums in the coming years. Just curious did anyone else go to the Franklin Institute for the gaming exhibit and if so how was your experience after all this was my perspective.

    Greed is one hell of a thing, had a price of 1.2 million for this thing but instead of going for that they put it online thinking they'll get a better price for it, being more than 1.2 but sadly it was not. Anyway $360k is still a lot of money but 1.2 million wouldve been way better but everything happens for a reason and the only good takeaway is that the new owner wants to put this thing and other rare things like it in a museum for everyone to see instead of on his shelf in his home.

    From the photos of this thing, it's kinda interesting that I've never seen any Nintendo branding on the console at all... at least from the angles we've been shown.
    Makes me wonder if the plan was for Sony to market and distribute it themselves. It would make good business sense. If it was a success, Nintendo stood to benefit from increased Super Famicom cart sales. If it flopped they would have only suffered a minor financial loss (if any) as it would be Sony's issue to deal with.

    • @gibmeaway100

      Nintendo generally don't brand their prototype or beta builds of consoles, that happens way later in production. Look up the "Ultra 64" or check out the Hard4Games channel to see what I mean. This Nintendo Playstation was just one of the few created in the prototyping phase before the project was canned by Nintendo.

    What the seller should have done, something scummy:
    Make that crowd-funded offer sign a contract, no matter what, the offered price will not change, the bidder or someone the bidder knows will bid the original offer so the bid stays locked as the minimum. The contract states that they may not drop their price, and if the auction doesn’t go smoothly, then the item is theirs (crowd finders). Failure to meet the offered amount will result in forfeit of the item to the second highest bidder (even if they offer them more than the second highest but less than the original offer). This would be a scare tactic to make them not back-out. In agreement for signing the contract, he would use some of the earnings to personally provide aid in making sure it goes somewhere for the public as the crowd funders wanted.

    That is what greed gets you, if the rumor is true about someone offering 1.2m, then they dropped the ball.

  • @eagle2032
    @eagle2032 4 роки тому

    $1.2m was most likely a lie. If so, seller would have had a minimum reserve on the auction sale closer to that number.

    at least someone that respects videogame history and will still work out ways for people that love vintage videogames to still get to see it. Worst case scenario would of been if some random rich dude bought it and put it on a shelf to never see the light of day again, or packed away in a basement like the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark...
