  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're doing something special. I had the opportunity to sit down, use, review, and discuss the history of the Nintendo Playstation prototype, AKA the SNES CD.
Thanks for Terry Diebold for making this possible.
Update 1, the prototype has since been sold.
Update 2, Terry has since passed away.

What really makes this console special is it involves two of the Biggest gaming companies in the industry. Two companies that have survived so many generations. This box is technically a generation 4 system. It's also the only Nintendo affiliated system that actually plays audio CDs. The GameCube, Wii & Wii can only play games and not CDs or DVDs. Someone should write a book about this thing so we all can own some part of it. SNES Play Station the Holy Grail of gaming.

Would Nintendo in their next hardware have gone the disc route? And would the PlayStation as we know it been made a Nintendo/Sony console? Man just thinking what that means, Final Fantasy 7-9, MGS, Crash, Spyro... and more on a Nintendo console in the 90s. That just seems odd.

Sadly if this was ever released it would have been too expensive to sell well. Cartridge was King in 1991-92. The Sega CD & Turbo Graffix CD did sell as well as the Genesis & SNES. Most people would only buy the core unit, very few would buy add ons. Even now a base console will sell more that the enhanced versions. The SNES Play Station like the SEGA CD was too ahead of its time. Gamers want one format, disc or cart. A unit that plays both will be more expensive to produce.
