If you discover his amazing voice you have to listen to his “message d’un terrien en détresse” where he’s covering 2.5 octaves in the chorus. Definitely a monument in France regrettably lost in an accident in 1986.
I'm a 25 yo French. This song gives me goosebumps as no other song. I really love Balavoine even if I don't hear him a lot. What a singer, what an impressive men. Most beautiful thing in this world are always too short.
I am Brazilian and I completely fell in love with the voice and music of this great French singer, he is simply my favorite singer, I identify a lot with what he writes, he is the best, great reaction is how I always get goosebumps when listen to this work of art!!❤️
I love Balavoine, and I'm french, please can you heard "Dalida - Mourir sur scène" it's the best 1980 singer, in this song, she sing his Death Wish (because she was alone). Sorry for my English, but can you send me what you think about this song? Thanks
Dereck, you absolutely have to read a translation of the lyrics while listening : it'll break your heart for sure ! This is all talking about Mankind throwing tears through Space ! As a french born in the 70s, I growed up listening to Balavoine at the radio and TV, before his tragic death in 1986. :'(
He died 35 years ago, he's still a top 3 favorite singer in France And this song is his best by far imo.The way he talks about depression and suicide is incredible. And his voice is beautiful and full of emotions We miss him a lot
I too have a preference for Mon fils ma bataille. He has lots of great songs and was involved in humanitary actions (where he lost his life in an helicopter crash in Africa).
I love him ! I was 6 when he died, I was shoking because he was a great Human. He sang engaged songs like : Lady Marlène (about the Berlin Wall) "Un enfant assis attend la pluie" (this song talk about african child), etc...
Daniel was out of this world. Unfortunately he died in 86 at the age of 33 in an helicopter crash in the desert during the "Paris-Dakar race"... He was there for a humanitarian cause, Install water pumps in the desert..... Daniel Balavoine is also the first singer to have sung "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" covered by Dimash.
This is a "text" song, Balavoine was a writing jeweler, an emotion creator and experience sharer. This song must have saved hundreds, thousands of lives, it's the song that draws and screams the thin line between life and eternal darkness. This song is a lifeline. Find a translation if you can and hold on to it along Daniel's voice.
GBY
As a French native I’m deeply touched by this song, it is part of the French musical history for sure. This is very 80’s spirit and style. Good on ya for the choice 👍

I'm a french and grow-up with this period of singers like D.Balavoine, this track is intense, beginning of the music is very similar of the work of Peter Gabriel for his production of the great album of Birdy, the beautiful & poetic Alan Parker movie. Especially Quiet & Alone released in 1985.

he was a text singer, always a meaning in all his songs, a militant for human & women rights...you should listen to "L'Aziza" a song he wrote for his wife :)
For your information, Daniel was the FIRST singer of SOS (covered by Dimash), in 1979 in the best french musical STARMANIA where he was one of the principal characters.
Caught in their glass vessels The messages struggle But the waves bring them back As star dust on the rocks.
All screamings, all Sos's / fly in air / in water leave a mark / wich foam makes all the beauty / Caught in their glass vessels / messages fight but waves take them back / As star dust on the rocks

One of the most, or the most French singer of the 80's. His song are so aerial, depuis, and his voice is just heavenly!!! Thank's for triste vidéo. Merci Dereck!!!!! 😉
He's one of the French artists that I would love to meet if he was still alive, he even died helping for a good cause. This song gives me goosebumps almost crying guys. I learned this song as a lot of French kids in music class. Such a great classic.
Daniel Balavoine, my entire teenage years. I remember when I heard the news about his death, I had this cold, stuck at home, complainging to my friend about being sick when I heard the news. I burst into tears. I couldn't believe it. Balavoine, Berger and Goldman, the musical heroes of my teenage years.
It was a complete shock. I remember it very well. You could hardly believe it. It seemed impossible that a man with such vitality and promiss could just "die". And in some ways, he has not. The songs he gave us live on, a testament to his extraordinary musicianship and creativity. I recently watched a video of him explaining how he was creating this very song on his computer (in 84!!!!) Fabulous to hear his creative process. And who can listen to "Partir avant les miens" without crying, considering what happened?

Hi Dereck, it seems you never reacted to a song of Michel Polnareff. So surprised about that! :-) Why not having a try at his "Lettre à France"? You will be surprised by another French composer and singer, quite unconventional. "Lettre à France" (Letter to France) was written by him after he left France and moved to the USA. He dearly missed his homeland but had forgotten to pay government taxes... :-))
The musical part is so modern, so ahead of its time. So unique too. His high voice and the deep lyrics made it a masterpiece. Its so sad though, but my favorite Balavoine's song by far 💕
Endless, Dereck. There's a before and an after this song. more than a song, a temple. Those streams at the end, the bass, the colors. And you Dereck, in French we would say that you are "une éponge à émotions", " a sponge for emotions", but I don't think the image could work in English, but it's a compliment. You absorb musical emotions and you recreate them on the screen, and you do it so good, it's a pleasure !
@Dereck Reacts He was a friend of Jeanne Mas who covered this song in one of her album as a tribute to him. France Gall did a song called "Évidemment" (a huge hit) that talks about his death. I would recommend you his song "Vivre ou survivre". My favorite of his I think. A bittersweet song.
Just don't underestimate Daniel Balavoine, I mean, he created more and beautifull songs like l'Aziza, La vie ne m'apprend rien, Mon fils, ma bataille,... but this song Tous les cris les SOS is the most beautifull of them;
Daniel was one of the best, tragic death... He was politically "angry" and did a lot to try to change mentalities. He was a good guy. Et did quite some gems... "Lady Marlene" is one of them. He also was part of the opera rock "Starmania" (Tycoon in English), and sang "SOS d'un terrien en detresse"... A huge hit with a high amplitude of notes.
Yes ! I was going to ask if someone told Dereck Balavoine was the original interpret of "SOS d'un terrien en détresse"! I'm so happy right now, I hope there will be other reactions about him 😊
Balavoine is still unmatched up to this day. Depth of the texts, harmony of instrumentals, intelligence in climax building, adaptation and creativity... gone too young unfortunately
The only one who came to this level was Gregory Lemarchal, who suffered from systic fibrosis and died at 24 only leaving us one album, a second posthumous one and loads of 'primes' performances at 2004's Star Academy... it's kinda like their life had to be so short for it to be that much appreciated.

Derek, I've stumbled upon your channel yesterday, and I loved the candor and the joy in your reviews is very uplifting. I am french leaving abroad away from my language, so I have focused on a lot of French songs I love, but with this one, you got me and it brought me to tears...of joy, of nostalgia also, as I miss my language *so* much some time, and I miss those singers whose songs were poetry, and Balavoine had such a powerful unique instrument. You know, to this day he is probably still one of the very best male voice of French music. His tessiture (range?) was wide, and high. Try some of his others if you haven't yet...they're all amazing, powerful, emotional. He was such a kind, generous, brave and rebellious soul taken too young in a tragic accident... you have me crying, I hate you. not.
If you like this song, I’d strongly recommend “Sauver l’amour” .In my opinion, it’s not as touching as this one but still great! I’m French Canadian and Daniel has deeply touched us as well. He left this world way too soon. I’ve heard he was about to try and make it on the English market. I believe he would have been successful !
Try "Quand on arrive en ville" from the rock opera "Starmania", lyrics by Luc Plamondon and music by Michel Berger and of course Daniel Balavoine as performer.

This song is so powerful. If you ever felt truly alone, this song hit miles. If you read French, you can appreciate the strong poésie.
I was about to say the same thing. The lyrics hit very hard.

Vanishes in the air,
Leaving, in the water, a trace
Made so beautiful by its foams.
Caught in their vessel of glass,

But the waves do bring them back
As stardust upon the rocks.
And I picked up the splinters,
Put the pieces back together.
Everything was clear as water,
There's no winning against the past.
The heroes ought to be replaced
In a world where the best is
Yet to be done.

Daniel Balavoine is a monument of the french songs. No one today come closed to him. He sang with his entire soul. We miss him so much.
Hi Dereck, it seems you never reacted to a song of Michel Polnareff. So surprised about that! :-)
Why not having a try at his "Lettre à France"? You will be surprised by another French composer and singer, quite unconventional.
"Lettre à France" (Letter to France) was written by him after he left France and moved to the USA. He dearly missed his homeland but had forgotten to pay government taxes... :-))
« I though the chorus was the bridge, but the chorus is NOW ! » i love it :D
It's also a "lyrics song", like check the lyrics you'll see what I mean. It's kinda poetry.
Just don't underestimate Daniel Balavoine, I mean, he created more and beautifull songs like l'Aziza, La vie ne m'apprend rien, Mon fils, ma bataille,... but this song Tous les cris les SOS is the most beautifull of them;
Daniel was one of the best, tragic death...
Man, you are listening to one of the best French singers. He wrote and composed almost all of his songs. He is deeply missed because he was also a wonderdul soul. A legend.
I'm so happy! You've finally discovered Daniel Balavoine!!! 😍😍
I am happy too !!
This song is one of his masterpieces.
Thanks for this reaction ☺️👍
Since your reactions to Mylene Farmer, I subscribed, waiting for Daniel Balavoine !
Do you know that he's the original singer of "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" ? The famous song Dimash used to be known ?
I hope you will react to Balavoine's original version.
He was such a kind, generous, brave and rebellious soul taken too young in a tragic accident... you have me crying, I hate you. not.
He died 2 days after my birth. You should react to "Aimer est plus fort que d'être aimé" also by Daniel.
Daniel died when most of us were not born. He would had been proud of his legacy. This song was of one his very last and the most beautiful.
For me, this song is the biggest french masterpiece. The song, lyrics, voice, everything in this shit is good, nothing to discard.
Well it is your opinion and your taste, but there are many many way superior french musics than this one.
Hey Dereck! You finally made it to this one. I haven’t even watched your reaction yet but I know that you liked this song. As well as L’Aziza, you could check out Daniel singing with France Gall in the musical Starmania (Quand on a plus rien à perdre). They were very good friends and loved working together.
As i know you like ABBA, daniel balavoine was a good friend of Frida !! They recorded a cover of an ABBA song together for a french musical named "Abbacadabra" !! The title of the song is "belle" (a french cover of the Abba's song "Arrival") big succes in french chart !! He wrote also a song for Frida's solo album "shine" ....great singer gone too early 🙏thanks dereck 👍👍👍
La magie du synthé et du Fairlight
Le texte pur qui dégage une sincérité
Que dire de la voix ?
De l'aigu puissant en voix pleine
Balavoine balance ses octaves sans forcer
Respect.
Inoubliable
when you listen this song and you understand french, you cry, for all the memories there is in this song, because of all you remember when you listen to it. I was born in 1981 and just listening this voice makes tear coming... and just for information, the man that sing was just a beautiful person. if only u could understand the words :)
Such a wonderful singer and song. Daniel took us all on a journey with his music. French music in the 80s was so varied and so very very good.
