Any French knows how to sing this song at the top of his lungs without the slightest shame
:-) I found his position too conservatives, sometimes nationalist, for me. But true, he's a famous singer in France. One cannot be liked by every ones.
Wow, I’m from Connemara in ireland and never realised just how popular this song was in France
It is !!!
Also very big in Belgium
A VERY popular song in France indeed, as well as in the French-speaking part of Belgium. And it is why when we French people go to Ireland, visiting the Connemara is an absolute must.
This song is so popular in France we can’t even start to describe how much like can you be French if you don’t know it😂
A must here in France. Beautiful Ireland
To listen to bagpipes in a great French hit, I suggest "Manau - La tribu de Dana"
oh oui !!
OUI
MAIS OUI C'EST CLAIR
Oui oui oui ouiii
Tellement! La tribu de Dana by Manau is such a beautiful song! An hymn to the ancient Celts. And we don't even need to be drunk to sing it. Ahah!
As a French girl with Irish roots I have my own interpretation of that particular song. It is all about Irish independence and the scars from the civil war. Michel Sardou used to write very political songs. He has been involved in many polemics because of his political opinions and many songs are to listen ( read) « second degree » as they are mostly sarcastic like « the old time of colonies » that is a denunciation of what happened there. About « les lacs du Connemara » it is a painting of life in Ireland at the early 80’s, a romantic place with a dark past and the physical wound in the north ( black clouds coming from the north) if you need an explained translation just ask me !
I am very emotional with this song as it is a bridge between the two parts in me the French singer, the Irish history and music. And you can believe me it was not simple to find a song with my very Irish name in France (and also someone saying my name correctly 🤪)

In Belgium we play that song at weddings. We all start waving our hanky
Hi. Listen "Vladimir Ilitch" from Sardou. Great orchestral song too and the lyrics are about how soviets became fools. I'm a folk metal guy but Sardou 70's/80's songs are greats and Vladimir Ilitch is just awsome title.

Tout à fait d'accord avec vous
You should try "Je vais t'aimer" from Michel Sardou, a true masterpiece 👌
Before covid, this song was the signal to climb on the tables and "sing our bananas off".
Miss those times.
Yeaaaaah! You've fallen down the rabbit hole, Dereck, by discovering our National Treasure, Michel Sardou! HE is to French pop music what Mozart was to classical music 👍👍👍
he was the biggest french star with Johnny Hallyday. If you beguin with him, you can listen 50 top songs from him minimum :)
Biggest ?
Sure ?
No please.
Love your reaction.
Not easy to explain in short lines how this song has deep connections with french people.
One region in France, known as Brittany, has their own language and culture.
Their songs have a celtic sound, with bagpipes and binious (Breton bagpipes) and sea shanties.
Some success Breton songs in France:
French lyrics:
Hugues Aufray - Santiano (1961)
Tri Yann - la jument de michao (1973)
Manau - La tribu de Dana (1998 Pop)
Breton lyrics:
Nolwenn Leroy - Tri Martolod (2011 - traditional breton song remastered)
Bro Gozh ma Zadoù (National Anthem of Brittany)
An hini a garan - Denez Prigent (ballad)
Cool reaction as always.
"Bagpipes, who would have thought that was gonna happen ?"
Well... it shouldn't have been a surprise, given the title... ^^
Michel Sardou has a powerful voice. Love his song Beethoven and the video...
Hi Dereck, this song is an hymn dedicated to Ireland, its scenery, its people. The colour of this song (its tempo as you said) is very Irish, very rhythmic...
I was completely stunned when I heard it as a child. Also I. NL a huge hit… I went bananas on this one..even before Dereck was born…
I like how you seem so serious in every reaction! xD Finally this song. Kind of an anthem for us Frenchs, so powerful, when you hear it everyone is forced to sing it. A song to know!
the song that any French person knows perfectly and that we sing at the end of the evening! it’s almost a French evening anthem!
I love how you are sooooo not ready for the rest of the song on the beginning. us French, we know this by HEART and it's a freakin' Anthem.
More Michel Sardou Derek!!!
un hymne à nos traditions celtiques
This song brings back memories, he his very famous in France
So cool to see you react to french music ! If you like old french songs, I'm sure you could enjoy Michel Polnareff's "Lettre à France", mindblowing song from 1978 ;)
Well done ! Good choice with Michel Sardou and this song. « Chanteur de Jazz » should be listened too.
The more beautiful french voice !
Ah, i see you’ve found our national anthem
Oh My God, this song is fantastic. We sings this shit everywhere !! Every french person know this song. It's like a song who keep people together, like a big hug for 5min, I love this song !
(From a french girl)
michel Sardou is one of the best singers in France. Old generation but this voice is just waouh. His songs have become classics . try : Afrique adieu, Vladimir ilitch, musulmanes, je vais t'aimer, tous les bateaux s'envolent, les ricains (about American GI who came in normandy to deliver France from the nazis), la maladie d'amour, femmes des années 80, les deux écoles, France (about our most famous cruiser, which became Norway). Les lacs du Connemara are incredible. I come from Brittany and Irish people are cousins (we have many people here who have Irish ancestors; I discovered some in my geneaogy), so this song is very very appreciated here.
one of my favorites :
Michel Sardou - Musulmanes (1987)
This artist are exceptionnel... Merci Michel Sardou... And where the Cathédrales.... Exceptionnel...
Since I am not from France, I don't have the cultural background of parties with this song as many people seem to have! It was the first time in a long time (30 years, maybe?) that I listen to it. I had goosebumps for most of the song, and it is the first time I don't find bagpipes overpowering (the fact that the said bagpipes are not right beside me could play in that feeling! lol)
After a long road trip in 1981 to his home at St. George Motel (France) Michel Sardou wanted to write a song about Scotland because somewhere he had heard bagpipes. He didn´t know anything about Scotlan though, so his friend and lyrics writer of the song, Pierre Delanoe went to the local library to do research on Scotland. He found nothing but returned with a tourist brochure on Ireland and specifically the Connemara region. And so the song was born. Some feathers were ruffled as part of the song talks about a Catholic wedding, when the problems in Ireland between Catholics and Protestants were particularly intense at the time.
Typical and traditional song for carnival organise party everywhere in french speakers south part in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, french part of Zwitzerland, also mariages etc, and all the local pub :)
C.U.L.T.E !!!!!!!! 💗💗💗
Et le restera 😀
Eternal song !
It's about Ireland. That's why the bagpipes and the tempo. You should hear his other songs: Elle court, la maladie d'amour; les vieux mariés; Une lettre
à ma femme, etc.
This song used to be played in most French weddings. Altough lyrics are about Ireland.
Un grand artiste Français....
Thank you for your comments about French songs ! 👌
What you called bagpipes is actually in French an instrument called bignou.
If you want to lose your bananas, at least with Johnny Hallyday, listen to "Que je t'aime", "Toute la musique que j'aime", et "Vivre pour le meilleur". Just to choose those three, but there so much more.
Allumer le feu 🔥
@@lemoussaillon That's the one I was thinking.
Dude, les lacs du connemara is probably his most popular song, but he has so many more iconic songs.
You can see the single "c'est ta chance " (it is your luck) of JJG. It is juste pertfect.
The lyrics are mostly about a romanticised version of the life of people in Ireland (specifically in the Connemara region) and the rhythm you hear throughout the song is very typical of traditional irish/celtic music.
Dereck, with Michel Sardou you could alors listen the song "Afrique Adieu" . This is a hudge hit in France and the music is so Good.
One think important : the composers of this song wrote few ways ago a song called "Comme d'habitude", sung by Claude François. This song, thanks Paul Anka is known now as "my way"
I like as well « je viens du Sud » or « la rivière de notre enfance » by Michel Sardou songs i picked up during my holidays in France.
hey! I love your videos! and I really advise you to make a video with another song by Michel Sardou which was a phenomenal success in France!
title: "la Java de Broadway"
It's so weird to see someone listening to this song while sober XD
🤣🤣🤣 yes a classic french song about Ireland 🤣🤣 go figure ( beautiful country btw!!!)
It s the french song for tell « the party is off end 😂 » avouez que tout les étudiants utilisent cette chanson mtn dans leurs soirée 😂

That's the typicall french party music when youre drunk
Merci Dereck 👍🏻
The final of this song is so POWERFUUUUULLLL :o
Listen "le France" by Sardou, it's a song for the french boat "France" ! Great video against
Hi, in France this song are the last off many club earlier closed and go home. Sorry for my english i'm french 😂
That is THE classic French song that everybody sings during parties in France ;)
Connemara is a part of Ireland he visited and loved, he made a song about how it was beautiful and the people are defiant of the Englishmen etc
Sardou is back on stage !
that is the typical end of drunk night song in France !
Dereck, you really have to listen to the song: l'aigle noir also sung by Michel Sardou. It is awesome as well. It's hard to find though...
Please react to "Etre une femme" (being a woman) by the same artist. This dates back from 1981 and depicts what is being a "modern" woman in the 80's. This is very, VERY dancy.
And very, very sexist. 👎🏼👎🏼
@@veroniquelebeau2692 Non !
I remember when i went to visit Ireland (I'm French btw), we played this music 10 times when we went to visit the Conemara lakes.
Le joie des bals :D
Derek I recommand you strongly the best song of Michel Sardou:
Elle court elle court la maladie d'amour.
It's wonderful!
you should listen to "le France" by Sardou she is as beautiful as the ship
It's not really classical meets rock. There is a lot going on, but a lot of it can be linked to traditional French and Irish music (mostly Irish though). Sardou, although not my favourite singer, delivered quite a number of hits and sometimes is unorthodox. He was not afraid to use old rythms with a layer of modernity. Good on him, that's what Malicorne did and 40 years later people still come listen to the same songs (and they also still sing Les Lacs du Connemara in bars).
He is a husky tenor. I grew up 🎶 listening to his music in Haiti.
It's even better when everyone is tipsy and all generations join, in a big circle typically at a French wedding. Kind of a hokey cokey effect but with proper music.
Hello, i'm french. Another song : Michel Sardou " Afrique Adieu" . 🙏🏼🙏🏼😊
You have to picture yourself singing to this completely drunk at 5am lol
In France when the pub's or night club will closed , lac du Connemara are played
Hello Dereck !
How many songs did he write ?
My favorite are J'accuse ( earth love).
Have a nice day 👍😉
he is a singer not a writer of lyrics or a compositor.
His instrument is his voice.
Great video again. You should try "ma peine maximum" from the "10 commandements". That's a rly great song that many people like in France from the beginning of 2000s
it is a standard in France
On ne part pas sans le Connemara !
Hello Dereck from France !
Your videos are so good ! 👍
I think you will like to react to "Les vieux mariés" , a song from the same singer Michel Sardou 😊
It is different but so emotional... You have to read the lyrics (translated 😉)
Genius
Hey listen « JE VAIS T’AIMER » from MICHEL SARDOU ...
I LOVE THIS SONG !!!
You should listen to "je vais t'aimer" by Michel Sardou. It's very impressive !
Hey ! Today you were on French TV ! =)
Listen Serge Gainsbourg and his "initials B B"...
