  • Rim tape is an important part of a bicycle wheel. It is a strip of material placed inside the rim, covering the spoke holes. The purpose of rim tape is to protect the inner tube from being punctured by the spoke holes. • Oh, Man, My Tire is Fl...
The spoke holes in a bicycle rim are sharp and can easily puncture an inner tube. When the inner tube is inflated, it presses against the spoke holes, and if the rim tape is not present, the sharp edges of the spoke holes can puncture the tube.
Rim tape also helps seal the rim and prevent air from leaking. This is important for both clincher tires and tubeless tires. Clincher tires have a bead that grips the rim, but if there are any gaps between the bead and the rim, air can leak out. Tubeless tires do not have an inner tube, so they rely on the rim tape to seal the rim and prevent air from leaking out.
Rim tape is relatively inexpensive and easy to install, but it can play a big role in preventing flats. If you are experiencing frequent flats, it is a good idea to check the rim tape to ensure it is in good condition and properly installed.
Here are some tips for installing rim tape:
✅ Make sure that the rim tape is the correct size for your rim.
✅ Clean the rim thoroughly before installing the rim tape.
✅ Apply the rim tape to the rim so that it covers all of the spoke holes.
✅ Press the rim tape down firmly to make sure that it is adhered to the rim.
If you are uncomfortable installing rim tape yourself, you can take your bike to a bike shop, and they will be happy to do it for you.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

I bought ican Chinese carbon rims a while back. Pumped up tires this spring and both tubes popped with in two days. Used stans tubeless tape because velox wouldn't allow tire to move on already hard to mount rim. I use velox usually but not that time.

Yeah, sometimes can be a little wider di, and makes installing tires in general challenging. Like the old Trek Metrix aero rims of the 90's. So many bloody knuckles.

I really enjoy your videos, I'm glad to see another person in the industry hanging in after all these years.
How do you evaluate used bike prices?
I'm also curious what your process is when preparing a used bike from how you decide if it's worth working on to putting it up for sale?
    Thanks for being you!

I started using Bicycle Blue Book as a reference point, but after selling a lot, you get a general sense of what you could sell it for. But my value prop is the complete tune-up, parts, and fitting when sold locally. Basically, it's the cost of the used bike plus the cost of a tune-up plus parts, which is what the selling price usually lands at. But if you are in a shop and comparing margins, used can get you 40-45 points on average vs. new has gone to 30 to less. Maybe I should have a playlist: "How to open a shop in the garage?"

wow that roll of rim tape is $300 CAD, you can get 100m of Schwalbe fabric/polyester rim tape for $80 which seems like a much more economical option.

Yes if you are doing a lot of rim tape, but the singles sets are around $12 us. But I have had this roll for 3 years now. lol amzn.to/45JZ2NH
