You should see the video when he was the first white person on soul train. It was the best video ever, even if he was stoned. Lol. I'm not racist and I'm glad he did so I could see variety in that show when I was born. Lol. I used to watch it all the time and I didn't know he he been on there til 2016.

As a testament to your enduring legacy, your wish has been granted. You did become a teacher....and your class room encompassed the world of creative, intellectual, multiplicity. The level and dimension of your artistic mentorship across the public cultural sphere, is simply staggering, by virtue of your unparalleled, and pioneering career trajectory. Your insatiable curiosity, aesthetic eclecticism, and prolific body of work will continue to influence and impact contemporary cultural literacy as we know it, for generations to follow. You were the last renaissance man standing...and how boldly and graciously you shattered the common disparity between intellect and character. I am so grateful and privileged to have lived during the Bowie era.

+Ineffable Oracular well said...he truly was / is a very real human being. I could listen to him forever as a life coach, he really had his act together with all his changes and such charisma he very well was a teacher in life! But in a classroom as a teacher he'd excel as he did in life with everything. His writings are so inspirational to me anyway and his curiosity with everything life has to offer. Yes he did quit smoking..... he just got dealt his card and he handled it on his terms with Blackstar. Bless that Starman for being a part of my life, i'm so happy he fell to earth during my time....and i saw him Live in the 70s and don't remember a thing....haaa he quotes he remembers nothing either .... love the man, he is so missed.

+Karen Katz It's very possible….he might have contracted Hepatitis C,w which is very common in his age group, especially amongst people who indulged a lot, and is often associated with liver cancer-or he might have had a primary lung cancer from his smoking that spread to his liver. However, he must have had a wonderful constitution to come back in such a strong way after the 1970's.

9:58 "I want it to be just like that until death strikes". So prescient, and I am happy that he got his wish. He was creating and full of ideas right up until it struck, and maintained that close family life too, all the things he was talking about here, nearly 20 years ago.

+lestrange I'm still so sad that he's gone, but it does my heart good to look back at these old interviews and see how many of the things Bowie wished for that he was able to accomplish in his life. In this interview he spoke so movingly about his relationships with his beloved family, and his ideals about artistic integrity and never shutting out new ideas, and his joy in sharing new ideas with other people. These were clearly his favorite things, and he had a life so full of them. In earlier interviews he said he hoped that his work would be meaningful to people, that he wanted to keep trying different things whether it meant losing fans or not, even specific things like he wanted to write a musical someday and he wanted to have an exhibition of paintings and he wanted to visit Indonesia. He did all of it. All his wishes came true.

fyi---This clip SEEMS to have been a TAVIS SMILEY show introduction of the Bowie/Charlie Rose interviews from 1996...and from 1998. I wonder if Charlie was unavailable to make the clip for the death announcement and the pulling together of these exerpted clips...? I 'm in NYC...used to see Boie in books sotres and record stores...ALL the time. Never acknowledged his celebirty...and ALWAYS gave him space. I was a long-time fan...especially in the NEW WAVE era.

I'm not immune to your consultations, but this definitely ran on Charlie's show on PBS. I saw it and recorded it. Charlie was off duty that night. Tavis Smiley was one of several substitutes. Other guest hosts took care of politics and such. I'm happy folks are enjoying this clip. David Bowie was a major talent. I like how he and John Lennon teamed up and made good use of their fame on "Fame."

+Sean Daly Nice lyrical reference. Amazing to hear him so blatantly admit that after 1987, he thought he was writing crap, and writing for the audience. That kind of awareness is what made him a genius.
This was just the intro to Tavis' show a couple of days after Bowie died. The clips were from Charlie Rose in the 90's.

+Glenn Leahey Your exactly why he probably chose to live in NYC. He had the freedom that he probably couldn't find anywhere else. I think John Lennon was of the same mind. ( Unfortunately, an asshole from outside New York sought him out.) I don't know if I could have resisted like you did. He is my favorite artist of all time. I probably would have been too awed to approach him-so, I would have left him alone for that reason. I think New Yorkers are so busy trying to survive in such and expensive place, they don't have time to worry about a celebrity in their midst. Anyway, that's my useless opinion.

He said that culture/art was irrational. That humans only needed to provide shelter and food. Anything else was extra. But I think that culture/art is what makes us human. It's the choices that we make that aren't necessary that determines us as individuals and as societies. If there is anything that lifts us above just being animals it is culture/art. And it has been with us even when we were at our most primitive. Humans think and create. We explore the unknown and manipulate our environment. We go beyond surviving. And that bit that is irrational makes all the difference. So celebrate it. Do something creative today. Get inspired. You don't need applause for it. Just do it because you can. Because you want to. Because you need to. Because you are human.

Bowie's poetry, the music he created, the revolutionary approach, his knowledge of literature, music, culture, art, and intellectual capacities are more than genious. Bowie's sophistication is reflected in his eyes, facial expression, diction, etc, etc. „When we were casting The Prestige, we had gotten very stuck on the character of Nikola Tesla. Tesla was this other-worldly, ahead-of-his-time figure, and at some point it occurred to me he was the original Man Who Fell to Earth. As someone who was the biggest Bowie fan in the world, once I made that connection, he seemed to be the only actor capable of playing the part. He had that requisite iconic status, and he was a figure as mysterious as Tesla needed to be. It took me a while to convince him, though-he turned down the part the first time. It was the only time I can ever remember trying again with an actor who passed on me. I petitioned to let me explain why he was the right actor for it. In total honesty, I told him if he didn’t agree to do the part, I had no idea where I would go from there. I would say I begged him.„ Christopher Nolan . Chao chao jealous boy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes lately, David Bowie strikes an emotional cord in me when listening to him. He sounded so genuine when he talked about wanting to be a teacher. How he loved giving that "gift" to others, the greatest gift in his opinion.
David has left an amazing legacy, and most importantly a reminder to live life on YOUR terms. Don't give a crap about what others think. Look like how you want, love who you love. Sure, he talked about his straying in the 1980s. But that just made him find himself again. Live life on your own terms, if you're lucky to be able to, because you never know when life is over. And who the hell wants to look back thinking "I wish I had..."? No one! Thank you David Bowie for reminding me of that!! I could even say that I love you for it. Wherever you are, black star.

+My Biz He does come off as genuine and even self-deprecating to a point. A real human being! Go figure. Would have loved to have met the man as he is my favorite individual artist of all time. I saw the "Serous Moonlight" tour of which he toured off of Let's Dance. It was an absolutely stellar show. I saw him 4 times and that was the most comprehensive and best of the 4. He may have not been happy with that period but I believe he gained so many new fans from that tour. I had already been a fan since the early 70s and had seen him at smaller venues than the open stadiums of "Serous Moonlight", but that show was something else. He's the only celebrity in my life whose death affected me on a very emotional level. Even when John Lennon was shot, I didn't have the reaction I did when David died. Will miss him for sure.

sad to c him smoking. i wonder if he had ever quit & if so, was it long before he was diagnosed w/cancer? or did he choose the patrick swayze way of denying it affected his chances of recovering? what i admire even more than his incredible musical talent is his relationship w/his wife. another paul & linda mccartney type of marriage. & his devotion to his family. great guy. i miss him.

+mjt11860 liver cancer is not really associated with cigarette smoking. tobacco probably did cause his heart disease, which he did survive. liver cancer can be associated with many things (like hepatitis C) or can just arise spontaneously. I'm an oncology nurse, by the way.

+mjt11860 Yes he quit after his daughter was born, because he didn't want to have to go outside to smoke all the time. And I am sure the heart attack made him want to take better care of himself.

Looking at the life of many celebrities and their stories.
I know nothing much about their personal life...However, their work life (tempted to say world life..)
Well, prince worked a 80 hour week.
Is that unusual? No Oprah works 80 hours a week.
Prince..40 hours spent on music, 40 hours spent on the business. according to people who knew him (read it or video.) Everyone can look at this, its all online...
I dont see many people working 80 hour weeks and lasting long. looking at other professions.
Oh fun music and dancing? :D (for 50 years, it just becomes another job. With world wide consequences if you fail too much. :D )
    Lot of stress.
Life young, die long. That is my motto. I like to last for my grandchildren at least. Career is not worth it. Even at that price. I would have loved to have BOWIE, PRINCE, LEMMY!
Even if for only a decade more. :D
I dont think it was the drugs, i think it was a long and hard life style lived in the public eye. (look at history, things have changed and are much softer.)
    Look at the beatles...
I wish all these people could have been around longer, but they lived it, made the choices and left as happy looking as they came in. What more can you ask from ANYONE? Even if they dont live long enough to appreciate them fully?
    I dont know.

I will always appreciate Bowie and the rest of the heros. Without them life would be much poorer and that is my only complaint of all that have died this year.
And i hope to see them again, next reincarnation . Fuck yeah!
