I enjoy your videos. Regarding adaptive cruise, at the 3:30 mark, you said one click up or down will adjust the speed one mph and click/hold will adjust in 5 mph increments. My 2021 Outback is the exact opposite. Click up or down to adjust by 5mph hold up or down for 1 mph adjustments.
@@alexpmo actually we have this issue in our 2022 Ascent and 2022 Forrester - one is click up/down change 5 mph and the other is hold and 5 mph change, makes it confusing as we switch back and forth between cars LOL we absolute love the adaptive cruise control! We do lots of long road trips and it is a game changer. We also use X Mode and AVH all the time because of where we live - my Ascent has the manual button for AVH and stays on when I start... so I always forget to turn it on in the Forrester!
I learned something the other day. My blind spot warning wasn’t working and I couldn’t figure out why. I finally figured out it. I had been moving my mirrors. Instead of putting that knob back in the center after adjusting each mirror i left it pointed to the right mirror. When i moved it back to center, my blindspot feature started working again.
I'm not sure about that..I always have my mirror control set for the right side since I adjust it more often..it doesn't affect blind spot warning at all..I have a '23 forester
Reverse auto braking is startling. It felt like I hit something. It is not shy about slamming on the brake. But I loved it when it saved me from backing into a post. Big smile when I realized what had happened.
My month-old car I thought I hit something and crapped my pants I dreaded looking at the back bumper so I drove for a couple of minutes till I could pull over and do my happiness I saw nothing and realized the reverse Auto braking did its job
I had a bike rack on the back. As soon as I tried to back up it slammed on the brakes. I freaked out! It took me a while to realize the bike was blocking the camera.
It's SUPER startling when it brakes for shadows!! I have to pay attention to notice if there are shadows in the backup camera and I have to turn it off otherwise it will scare the crap out of me when it brakes for nothing!!
I just got a Subaru outback with this feature. I was backing out of parallel and it slammmmmmmmmed the break and it sounded terrible? Like cranking gears. Should I have it check out???
I'm in Japan and just purchased a 2018 Forester, the model that came out in August of 2018 so it has the 2019 model type. It has all these features in it.
Two days ago I bought my first ever Subaru. It's a 2024 Forester Wilderness. I've pretty much driven VW's. going all the way back to my high school days in the mid 70's. I've had a few Toyota's here and there, but never a Subaru. Now in my 60's the larger windows and driving assists are great. Vehicles sure have come along way from my first ever new car, a 1974 VW Beetle.

Off subject, but,... a very important setting for your Subaru is the TIRE PRESSURES. Subaru door sticker(on my 2017 Outback) states 32psi - front and 30 psi - rear. Out here, in West Texas, it can go from 75° to - 2° in one day. I have found that I can set my tire pressures higher, and just compute the ratio to keep them in sync. I run 38psi - front and 36.5psi - rear. My fuel consumption from West Texas to Iowa averaged 29.7mpg. I LOVE MY OUTBACK. 3rd one!
Driving my 2023 Ascent North on a steep downhill section of Highway 5 towards Ashland Oregon with cruise control and lane centering on and a light one-handed touch on the steering wheel, I discovered that in a sharper than usual curve, Lane Centering will automatically shut off. So there I am in a sharper than usual left curve when, Yikes! Lane centering is gone and suddenly I am speeding towards the shoulder with steep cliff in front of me. I quickly grip the wheel with both hands while tapping the brakes and correcting my direction. So far, so good, except tapping the brakes turned off the cruise control so now I've entered a steep, sharper than usual right curve at 75 MPH while gaining speed and rapidly closing on the tail of a slow moving big rig. Luckily, I had space to swing around the big rig. My advice, use cruise control and lane centering for long flat sections and shut it off in the mountains. Other than that, I have had this car for 9 months and absolutely love it. It is a joy to drive, especially on long trips.
Dynamic Cruise Control in the mtns is fine and safe, but relying on the lane centering on curvy roads is not recommneded. I've been using the DCC thru the mountians for years now, but I never rely on lane centering, in fact I find it annoying and don't use it at all.
Also, never rely on any of the driver assist features when driving in heavy rain. This includes the DCC, which can turn off if the cameras struggle to see thru the heavy rain.
It depends on the speed too, itll work fine on sharp curves if you're going not too fast. If you're going too fast + a sharp curve, the cameras wont be able to keep up
Alex, you are the bomb! Our Subaru dealer uses your videos for training on new cars. We just got a new 2025 ONYX. Please remind people if their AVH is on and they go into a car wash with a belt drive and you put your car in neutral, AVH MUST be turned off! I've had this happen twice and the car starts shuddering, all kinds of lights come on, and the car wash attendant stops the belt, looks at me, then yells , “Do you know how to put your car in neutral?!!” Duh, yes, but I didn't realize the first time why it happened. Learned my lesson!! Keep up the great videos!!
Here's a tip I have discovered. I like having the cruise control acceleration on comfort. When a car in front of me starts to move over, and I'm following at 2 or 3 bars, I click the follow distance down to minimum as they get out of the way. Then bump it back up after they have moved over. This way my OB starts accelerating sooner instead of faster, and I still stay comfortable, safe, and better gas mileage.
Auto start stop eliminator is a must buy. You will never have to push the button again. It's a super easy install under the diver seat. Worth every penny.
The toughest thing w adaptive cruise control is when cars are exiting on a ramp, my car will slam on the brakes to slow me, sighting the exiting vehicle. I try my best to move over a lane to avoid the braking.
You can press the accelerator (gently) to counteract the cars deceleration to avoid this. Then once it's clear just let back of the accelerator and it resumes doing it's thing.
I love your knowledge and assistance. I'm on my third Subaru Forester and I wasn't aware of some of the things you talk about. Probably because the manual is as thick as a dictionary. That's the one thing they should work on because it's hard to find what you are looking for.
Great explanation of these functions. I am so glad that all of the functions had not moved to the touchscreen on my 2022 Forester. Eliminates the self-doubt that maybe I should've waited to get a 2023 or 2024.
2023 Subaru forester touring: the auto stop/start default is to turn the engine off when braking to stop. If I step hard on the brake the engine stops. In the same default mode, I've discovered I can lightly step on the brake and stop the car and the engine stays on. The only time I step hard on the brake is when there is an obvious lengthy stop such as passing train. I don't like the feel of the motor stopping and starting up.
same on the 2020 - i liken this function to a digital camera that has a slight detent in the shutter button that will display all info in viewfinder but not take the photo - once you get the feel of the pedal… it becomes 2nd nature to press harder to shut engine or lightly at a 4 way stop - good point !!
I hate auto start stop. I live in an area where there are a lot of stop signs. So you are only stopped for a second. The car turns off and on again almost immediately. The car shudders. This can’t be good. I wish we could default it off. I believe California and perhaps some other states require it which is ,I suspect, the real reason Subaru has it. I have to train myself to shut it off every time I start the car.
I agree. I have to always push that button when I start my car. I like my subaru, but all the electronic crap is pathetic and unnecessary. When you buy your subaru you are invited to go to a class in order to learn how to drive it.

If you use the auto vehicle hold in a drive thru it will turn the emergency brake if you have to open your door. This happened to me in a Walgreens drive thru because I’m short I had to open the door to reach. Now I only use this in a traffic situation.

I learned new things after owning my 2022 Outback Wilderness for 2 1/2 years. I didn't know I could set lane keep assist while cruise control was turned off. I knew I could set the distance to the car in front while in cruise control, but I didn't know I could change the acceleration setting or turn it off. I didn't realize cruise control could be set as low as 20 mph. I did not know X-mode could keep a slow descent on a hill. I was not aware that features on the screen could be moved with a touch of a finger. I was not aware how much I did not know about my own car.
Great vid as always. We own 4 Subaru's. I honestly dont find the majority of the modes the least bit helpful. I hate the auto start and the second I am done buckling my belt I shut it off. The reverse breaking is great. I have used the adaptive cruise control a few times on longer trips and really dont like being paced by whatever is in front of you. My 2 biggest gripes are the lane assist and the eye sight technology. If I am tired I will throw on the lane assist but really dont like the feeling of having the wheel pulling away from you. We have an off camber corner about 2 miles from our house. In all the 4 cars we have if the lane assist is on the wheel literally jerks away from you in the WRONG direction. Its crazy. It wants to pull you into oncoming traffic. I have spoken with the service center who tells me they get complaints from time to time regarding this. They have confirmed my settings are all correct. It must be reading the lines wrong? Last is the eyesight crash technology. Lets say you are moving down the high way in the middle lane at 65. The guy in the left decides he is going to try to ctach the exit all the way over to the right and crosses in front of you. Under normal circumstances you would let off the gas and slightly brake. With eyesight if he is close enough it slams the brakes on giving you and everyone behind you some fun to deal with. Sam ething if you are in the right lane and want to pass to the left. If you swipe too close to the rear of the car you are passing it will slam the brakes on. Not much fun. I turn just about everything off. I think the safety, reliability and high mileage capability outweighs the "nanny" switches.
The old way of putting your Subie into Xmode is SOOO much easier. In my wife’s Outback, you simply push 1 buttons. In my Forester Touring, I simply rotate the dial. I do like the newer system that it will disengage at above 25mph and then reengage when you get to 25mph or below. On our Subie’s we have to engage it Every time and in my Forester it won’t engage unless I’m going Under 10mph.
Just received my 2024 forester touring Blue and I’m very happy with the design. Had a 2014 and enjoyed so much that decided to get the 2024. Looking forward to watching your videos and applying it to real driving. Thanks for all the great content, ❤❤
That Auto Stop Start is such a pain in the ass. You have to disable the app Every time you start your car. I’m quite sure that the amount of gasoline that you save will NOT save you enough fuel for the cost of a new starter.
A/S/S is a pain in the a** but when you use AVH it's a joy. As far as starter reliability, Toyota (owns 100% of Subaru) throws a CEL after 384.000 starts, fix is to replace the starter and reset counter. 20+ starts a day for 50 years.
@@lukasware Actually Toyota only owns 40% of Subaru. If Toyota owned all of Subaru then Toyota would start using Subaru’s symmetrical AWD systems in their AWD vehicles because it’s superior over everyone else’s AWD systems, except for Audi’s Quattro AWD system. Subaru went into bed with Toyota because Subaru doesn’t have enough knowledge on how to produce a reliable hybrid system or an EV system.
Leave it off next time you drive. When you come to a complete stop, DON'T try to push the break pedal thru the floor. Just put enough pressure on it to keep you from creeping forward .....the auto start/stop shouldn't engage. It takes some getting use to, but with my '21 Limited, I've got it down to a science. 😉

Really appreciate your videos here in Australia. Bizarrely Subaru Australia only provides a hard copy stack of manuals, no PDFs. These are impossible to use with small text etc. I just use your videos when I want to check how to use a function. Now on a MY23 Touring, took our MY21 Touring across the Nullarbor and throughout the Outback, amazing. Gave it to our daughter for her growing family and picked up the MY23 from our fave dealer without a test drive. Quick trick I found out the hard way. Steering lock activated when parked in the middle of nowhere, fix is to have foot on brake and jiggle the steering wheel whilst pressing the start button. Luckily we had a SatPhone to call our dealer.
Absolutely wonderful videos and understandable presentations. I never knew the Adaptive Cruise Control "distance" marks indicated increments of one second! Makes sense, and thanks again!
Just picked up a 2024 Crosstrek limited I love it... I almost broke down and spent the HUNDO to defeat the Auto Stop/Start 😁 but Cash is tight so I'm committing it to memory every time I start the car otherwise it's been flawless
So I saw this UA-cam video, and several others, criticise the allegedly under powered engine on this 2.0R Crosstrek. Then I drove 2 of these cars. A friends, and then a demo car at a Dealer. I literally laughed and came to conclusion ALL of these car reviewers are petrol heads who want a racing car and routinely speed on Aussie roads. This car is no petrol gusssling racer but has more than adequate power and acceleration for the average driver. It doesn't need a 2.5L engine. I wouldn't recommend this car for a family of 4 but it's great as is for a single person or couple. Contrary to this review it's also quiet, doesn't whine and has excellent boot space. After laughing at this review I bought the 2.0R Crosstrek :)
So far I have not seen any videos that mention when you go through a car wash, you can NOT have the AVH on. I learned this the hard way. I had our 2025 Outback in neutral, but the car acted like it was in park. Luckily the attendant told me what was wrong. I had to keep my foot on the brake as I pushed AVH to get it off. Fortunately, no damage done.
When adaptive cruise control is engaged on my 2019 Impreza, the car will beep every time it detects a new car immediately in front of it.. and then again when the car in front of it is no longer in front of it. This results in constant needless beeping that can be annoying. How can I disable this needless beeping?
I don't believe you can turn it off but you can lower the volume mine is on mid and I don't find it annoying but just enough. Tap 🚗, go to more settings, and select warning volume, min, mid, or max

I have a 2023 Crosstrek premium with no other options. I think all the whistles and bells are more of a distraction like reading or texting while driving. How many times do you take your eyes off the road trying to adjust, turn on of off some of these features. Other than that I like the car.
Thank you for not making me feel like I was the only person that thinks this way! This is some engineers idea to bilk people. Without these unnecessary devices- the Crosstrek is a 20,000 dollar car. ❤
@@raymonddeflaviis2306I hear you. With the hardware in place, most of these features are just software so cost Subaru very little to include. Of course we can choose to only use the ones we like, but every extra button to ignore or avoid strips a little joy from the user experience. Great User interface design is hard.

Great channel. Here in Canada the trim levels have different names, but features available more or less the same, so the info you give is very helpful.
I would like to point out a caution when using adaptive cruise without cruise on. Most people know not to use cruise when snowy or ice conditions are present. But using adaptive cruise without speed control in snowy conditions can cause this feature to malfunction. When passing a semi coming from the opposite direction the snow it kicks up will cause your car to apply the brakes very hard, harder than I would in normal winter conditions. When it does this it is hard to judge keeping the vehicle straight and also keeps you in the snow cloud much longer. The other thing that is very stressful is the fear of being rear ended. They would not expect or be aware of the vehicle in front of them suddenly doing half the highway speed.
I just purchased a 2024 Outback package option 21. We were driving on a 55mph highway with minimal hills and no traffic. My husband used the cruise for the first time. With the cruise on the engine RPM was changing nonstop. With cruise off the RPM held steady and didn’t fluctuate. At this point we feel that we can’t use the cruise. It wouldn’t be economical. We don’t want a vehicle that you can’t use the cruise on.
Love the videos! I just bought a 2024 Forester (from a 2009 Forester that is going to my 16 year old niece). The features between the two are...pretty different, haha. The videos have been a bit help.
Great channel!! Just purchased our first Subaru. It’s nice to learn about all these features on my timeline. It’s to much to take in during the 15 minute orientation. Plus I’ve shown a couple. Of the salespeople features they did not know about. It’s a good channel for them to recommend to new and prospective owners.

I've had my Forester Sport for two months now and I'm appreciating these videos. I've noticed that the cruise control lane centering likes to place my car very close to the right line at the side of the road, even on a long straightaway. If I let it do what it wants, there's about 4-5 times more space on the drivers side than the passenger side which I'm sure annoys the heck out of drivers in the lane to the right of me and I'm annoyed that it keeps dragging me off center. Is the centering technology adjustable so that I can get it set to center me with equal space on both sides of the car? If not, I'm going to quit using it unless I plan to stay in the slow lane.
I was so excited to have the lane centering feature on my ‘20 Outback but sadly ran in to the exact same thing. My arms would get tired from how much I kept having to pull the car to the left to stop it from being right on the right line.

adaptive cruise is great on two lane no pass mtn roads if the car ahead of you is not as sure as you. the car tracks at the distance you select and controls the speed accordingly. im not in a hurry anyway since the only thing i have to look forward to is a dead end so i get to enjoy the ride up or down the mountain road.
AVH is the best. Even happier that they allowed it to be added to the Home Screen after the latest update so You don’t have to go digging for it under the car settings every time you start up the car. ❤
I'm glad crosstrek has it, I've rented cars with it and it's fantastic. One reason we just bought the crosstrek sport. The price was great with all wheel drive included
Alex, I bought a 2024 Outlook last month. After owning it for about a week, I noticed that the red light for the alarm is always on, with the car unlocked. I took it to the dealer and the service writer told me the alarm light is supposed to be on all the time. I have owned a number of cars and the only time that alarm light is on is when car is locked. Is alarm light supposed to be on constantly? If not, how do I set it so that it only lights when the car is locked.
The cruise control is great in heavy traffic!! You can forget breaking and when the traffic starts to move you push the knob up and starts with cruise control again!! ❤❤❤
Alex. I have a 2023 Subaru Forester. If I have only conventional cruise control on does the Pre-Collision Braking activate if the Forester gets too close too the vehicle in front (i.e. no collision distant is set) ? Secondly does the Pre-Collision Braking activate if driving with no cruise control on and you are approaching too close to the vehicle in front (car in front makes abrupt stop) ? Can I assume the Eyesight cameras are always on and working unless I specifically deactivate the pre-collision braking manually with the deactivate button. Thanks
I have a 19 forester sport. I saw at a car show they had the headlights strobe from end to end, like the light moved up and down the led bar. Do you know how to access that feature. It seemed to work on all the led headlight Subaru’s on display.
I have found that using X-mode in the winter does nothing if you're using all season tires. If you're on a snowy incline and all four wheels don't have traction, you're not going anywhere. The owner's manual states that you should use snow tires in the winter which pretty much eliminates the need for X-mode.
I have a 2024 outback wilderness. I stopped using the lane departure assist because i live in the city and its always picking up on cracks in the road, which makes it feel unsafe when that happens going around a turn and the steering wheel tightens up. My question is will the auto start stop shut off the engine if the turbo has not cooled down to an acceptable temperature?
Hi Alex, great videos! My dad just bought a 2024 crosstrek and was driving it for the first time at night. He was really bothered by the brightness of both the center dashboard (above the steering wheel) and the brightness of the touchscreen area when the map was being displayed. Do you have any videos that show how to modify the brightness of those things? Thanks!
Great vid! I always turn on AVH whenever I am in my car. EDIT: I've never used X Mode. You suggested to use it when the weather might cause the roads to be slippery, I'll try that. I was under the impression X Mode is for off-roading, but it's OK to use in normal everyday driving if conditions are bad?
thank you for your videos I have learned a lot. We got a 2025 forester touring, and really enjoy the tech. I have to say i like both the stop and hold and the engine off features [boy not everyone does tho LOL] but... it seems to not want to turn off, and i think part of it is i'm using the hold feature. I think once maybe it both turned off the engine and put on the brake, but mostly it brakes... and the engine runs.... I know you can fiddle with pushing the brake harder but that does not seem to engage the engine off feature.

One side is yellow and the other side is green. How does seeing this indicator help me drive to get better mileage? Is this indicator necessary? Can I get rid of it? Thanks
I just encountered this last night. Didn't scrape the frost from my windshield well enough, and cruise wouldn't work until defrosters fixed it. Now I know how to turn it on!
I have a 2022 Forester PREMIUM. As I have been reading online, a lot of people are having issues with Starlink and Apple Car Play. When using Car Play and maps for navigation, it starts up fine, then shuts down. Comes back on, shuts down. Last time, the entire screen was inaccessible with the radio still playing,but all control was gone. Couldn’t use volume or even turn it off. I have read this is a big issues with a couple of years models. Any real fixes for this? It did have the update last year, but that did not fix anything.

Oops! I totally forgot to mention this changed for 2023 and newer Subarus. Prior years were opposite just like yours

I keep the mirror adjustment knob on my 22 WRX turned to the left most of the time, and I've never had the blind spot monitoring light issue either.
Reverse auto braking is startling. It felt like I hit something. It is not shy about slamming on the brake. But I loved it when it saved me from backing into a post. Big smile when I realized what had happened.
My month-old car I thought I hit something and crapped my pants I dreaded looking at the back bumper so I drove for a couple of minutes till I could pull over and do my happiness I saw nothing and realized the reverse Auto braking did its job
Learning experience for me: turn off RAB when backing a trailer! RAB thinks you are going to hit it, and brakes hard.
I had a bike rack on the back. As soon as I tried to back up it slammed on the brakes. I freaked out! It took me a while to realize the bike was blocking the camera.
It's SUPER startling when it brakes for shadows!! I have to pay attention to notice if there are shadows in the backup camera and I have to turn it off otherwise it will scare the crap out of me when it brakes for nothing!!
I just got a Subaru outback with this feature. I was backing out of parallel and it slammmmmmmmmed the break and it sounded terrible? Like cranking gears. Should I have it check out???
I'm in Japan and just purchased a 2018 Forester, the model that came out in August of 2018 so it has the 2019 model type. It has all these features in it.
Two days ago I bought my first ever Subaru. It's a 2024 Forester Wilderness. I've pretty much driven VW's. going all the way back to my high school days in the mid 70's. I've had a few Toyota's here and there, but never a Subaru. Now in my 60's the larger windows and driving assists are great. Vehicles sure have come along way from my first ever new car, a 1974 VW Beetle.
Subarus are great. I also used to drive VWs, I now have a 22 outback and love how safe subbies are

Off subject, but,... a very important setting for your Subaru is the TIRE PRESSURES.
Subaru door sticker(on my 2017 Outback) states 32psi - front and 30 psi - rear.
Out here, in West Texas, it can go from 75° to - 2° in one day.
I have found that I can set my tire pressures higher, and just compute the ratio to keep them in sync.
I run 38psi - front and 36.5psi - rear. My fuel consumption from West Texas to Iowa averaged 29.7mpg.
I LOVE MY OUTBACK. 3rd one!

Driving my 2023 Ascent North on a steep downhill section of Highway 5 towards Ashland Oregon with cruise control and lane centering on and a light one-handed touch on the steering wheel, I discovered that in a sharper than usual curve, Lane Centering will automatically shut off. So there I am in a sharper than usual left curve when, Yikes! Lane centering is gone and suddenly I am speeding towards the shoulder with steep cliff in front of me. I quickly grip the wheel with both hands while tapping the brakes and correcting my direction. So far, so good, except tapping the brakes turned off the cruise control so now I've entered a steep, sharper than usual right curve at 75 MPH while gaining speed and rapidly closing on the tail of a slow moving big rig. Luckily, I had space to swing around the big rig. My advice, use cruise control and lane centering for long flat sections and shut it off in the mountains. Other than that, I have had this car for 9 months and absolutely love it. It is a joy to drive, especially on long trips.
Dynamic Cruise Control in the mtns is fine and safe, but relying on the lane centering on curvy roads is not recommneded. I've been using the DCC thru the mountians for years now, but I never rely on lane centering, in fact I find it annoying and don't use it at all.
Also, never rely on any of the driver assist features when driving in heavy rain. This includes the DCC, which can turn off if the cameras struggle to see thru the heavy rain.
@@SM-McKraken The same applies for any conditions that limit visibility, e.g. heavy fog, snow, smoke, etc.
It depends on the speed too, itll work fine on sharp curves if you're going not too fast. If you're going too fast + a sharp curve, the cameras wont be able to keep up
Alex, you are the bomb! Our Subaru dealer uses your videos for training on new cars. We just got a new 2025 ONYX. Please remind people if their AVH is on and they go into a car wash with a belt drive and you put your car in neutral, AVH MUST be turned off! I've had this happen twice and the car starts shuddering, all kinds of lights come on, and the car wash attendant stops the belt, looks at me, then yells , “Do you know how to put your car in neutral?!!” Duh, yes, but I didn't realize the first time why it happened.
Learned my lesson!!

Here's a tip I have discovered. I like having the cruise control acceleration on comfort. When a car in front of me starts to move over, and I'm following at 2 or 3 bars, I click the follow distance down to minimum as they get out of the way. Then bump it back up after they have moved over. This way my OB starts accelerating sooner instead of faster, and I still stay comfortable, safe, and better gas mileage.
Auto start stop eliminator is a must buy. You will never have to push the button again. It's a super easy install under the diver seat. Worth every penny.

The toughest thing w adaptive cruise control is when cars are exiting on a ramp, my car will slam on the brakes to slow me, sighting the exiting vehicle. I try my best to move over a lane to avoid the braking.
turn it off for a minute
You can press the accelerator (gently) to counteract the cars deceleration to avoid this. Then once it's clear just let back of the accelerator and it resumes doing it's thing.

I love your knowledge and assistance. I'm on my third Subaru Forester and I wasn't aware of some of the things you talk about. Probably because the manual is as thick as a dictionary. That's the one thing they should work on because it's hard to find what you are looking for.
I love the base model because it has a key start . I never liked push button start.

Push button start/stop is an adjustment....a couple of weeks and you'll forget you ever had a key ignition.
We used X-mode in our Crosstrek once going down a steep, slippery, very rutty hill. It was amazing. The car took us down slowly and smoothly.

Traded in my 10 year old Subaru for a new one. So many features are new to me and your videos are very helpful.
2023 Subaru forester touring: the auto stop/start default is to turn the engine off when braking to stop. If I step hard on the brake the engine stops. In the same default mode, I've discovered I can lightly step on the brake and stop the car and the engine stays on. The only time I step hard on the brake is when there is an obvious lengthy stop such as passing train. I don't like the feel of the motor stopping and starting up.
During an obvious lengthy stop like a train you should be in Park.
same on the 2020 - i liken this function to a digital camera that has a slight detent in the shutter button that will display all info in viewfinder but not take the photo - once you get the feel of the pedal… it becomes 2nd nature to press harder to shut engine or lightly at a 4 way stop - good point !!
I hate auto start stop. I live in an area where there are a lot of stop signs. So you are only stopped for a second. The car turns off and on again almost immediately. The car shudders. This can’t be good. I wish we could default it off. I believe California and perhaps some other states require it which is ,I suspect, the real reason Subaru has it. I have to train myself to shut it off every time I start the car.

If you use the auto vehicle hold in a drive thru it will turn the emergency brake if you have to open your door. This happened to me in a Walgreens drive thru because I’m short I had to open the door to reach. Now I only use this in a traffic situation.

I learned new things after owning my 2022 Outback Wilderness for 2 1/2 years. I didn't know I could set lane keep assist while cruise control was turned off. I knew I could set the distance to the car in front while in cruise control, but I didn't know I could change the acceleration setting or turn it off. I didn't realize cruise control could be set as low as 20 mph. I did not know X-mode could keep a slow descent on a hill. I was not aware that features on the screen could be moved with a touch of a finger. I was not aware how much I did not know about my own car.
Great vid as always. We own 4 Subaru's. I honestly dont find the majority of the modes the least bit helpful. I hate the auto start and the second I am done buckling my belt I shut it off. The reverse breaking is great. I have used the adaptive cruise control a few times on longer trips and really dont like being paced by whatever is in front of you. My 2 biggest gripes are the lane assist and the eye sight technology. If I am tired I will throw on the lane assist but really dont like the feeling of having the wheel pulling away from you. We have an off camber corner about 2 miles from our house. In all the 4 cars we have if the lane assist is on the wheel literally jerks away from you in the WRONG direction. Its crazy. It wants to pull you into oncoming traffic. I have spoken with the service center who tells me they get complaints from time to time regarding this. They have confirmed my settings are all correct. It must be reading the lines wrong? Last is the eyesight crash technology. Lets say you are moving down the high way in the middle lane at 65. The guy in the left decides he is going to try to ctach the exit all the way over to the right and crosses in front of you. Under normal circumstances you would let off the gas and slightly brake. With eyesight if he is close enough it slams the brakes on giving you and everyone behind you some fun to deal with. Sam ething if you are in the right lane and want to pass to the left. If you swipe too close to the rear of the car you are passing it will slam the brakes on. Not much fun. I turn just about everything off. I think the safety, reliability and high mileage capability outweighs the "nanny" switches.
The old way of putting your Subie into Xmode is SOOO much easier. In my wife’s Outback, you simply push 1 buttons.
In my Forester Touring, I simply rotate the dial.
I do like the newer system that it will disengage at above 25mph and then reengage when you get to 25mph or below.
On our Subie’s we have to engage it Every time and in my Forester it won’t engage unless I’m going Under 10mph.
Just received my 2024 forester touring Blue and I’m very happy with the design. Had a 2014 and enjoyed so much that decided to get the 2024. Looking forward to watching your videos and applying it to real driving. Thanks for all the great content, ❤❤
That Auto Stop Start is such a pain in the ass.
You have to disable the app Every time you start your car.
I’m quite sure that the amount of gasoline that you save will NOT save you enough fuel for the cost of a new starter.
A/S/S is a pain in the a** but when you use AVH it's a joy. As far as starter reliability, Toyota (owns 100% of Subaru) throws a CEL after 384.000 starts, fix is to replace the starter and reset counter. 20+ starts a day for 50 years.

@@lukasware Actually Toyota only owns 40% of Subaru. If Toyota owned all of Subaru then Toyota would start using Subaru’s symmetrical AWD systems in their AWD vehicles because it’s superior over everyone else’s AWD systems, except for Audi’s Quattro AWD system.
Subaru went into bed with Toyota because Subaru doesn’t have enough knowledge on how to produce a reliable hybrid system or an EV system.

When you come to a complete stop, DON'T try to push the break pedal thru the floor. Just put enough pressure on it to keep you from creeping forward .....the auto start/stop shouldn't engage.
It takes some getting use to, but with my '21 Limited, I've got it down to a science. 😉

Really appreciate your videos here in Australia. Bizarrely Subaru Australia only provides a hard copy stack of manuals, no PDFs. These are impossible to use with small text etc. I just use your videos when I want to check how to use a function. Now on a MY23 Touring, took our MY21 Touring across the Nullarbor and throughout the Outback, amazing. Gave it to our daughter for her growing family and picked up the MY23 from our fave dealer without a test drive. Quick trick I found out the hard way. Steering lock activated when parked in the middle of nowhere, fix is to have foot on brake and jiggle the steering wheel whilst pressing the start button. Luckily we had a SatPhone to call our dealer.

Just picked up a 2024 Crosstrek limited I love it... I almost broke down and spent the HUNDO to defeat the Auto Stop/Start 😁 but Cash is tight so I'm committing it to memory every time I start the car otherwise it's been flawless
So I saw this UA-cam video, and several others, criticise the allegedly under powered engine on this 2.0R Crosstrek. Then I drove 2 of these cars. A friends, and then a demo car at a Dealer. I literally laughed and came to conclusion ALL of these car reviewers are petrol heads who want a racing car and routinely speed on Aussie roads. This car is no petrol gusssling racer but has more than adequate power and acceleration for the average driver. It doesn't need a 2.5L engine. I wouldn't recommend this car for a family of 4 but it's great as is for a single person or couple. Contrary to this review it's also quiet, doesn't whine and has excellent boot space. After laughing at this review I bought the 2.0R Crosstrek :)
So far I have not seen any videos that mention when you go through a car wash, you can NOT have the AVH on. I learned this the hard way. I had our 2025 Outback in neutral, but the car acted like it was in park. Luckily the attendant told me what was wrong. I had to keep my foot on the brake as I pushed AVH to get it off. Fortunately, no damage done.
When adaptive cruise control is engaged on my 2019 Impreza, the car will beep every time it detects a new car immediately in front of it.. and then again when the car in front of it is no longer in front of it. This results in constant needless beeping that can be annoying.
How can I disable this needless beeping?
I don't believe you can turn it off but you can lower the volume mine is on mid and I don't find it annoying but just enough. Tap 🚗, go to more settings, and select warning volume, min, mid, or max

I have a 2023 Crosstrek premium with no other options. I think all the whistles and bells are more of a distraction like reading or texting while driving. How many times do you take your eyes off the road trying to adjust, turn on of off some of these features. Other than that I like the car.

Of course we can choose to only use the ones we like, but every extra button to ignore or avoid strips a little joy from the user experience. Great User interface design is hard.

It's funny how he assumes everyone in the world uses miles and gallons when it's just the U. S.
I would like to point out a caution when using adaptive cruise without cruise on. Most people know not to use cruise when snowy or ice conditions are present. But using adaptive cruise without speed control in snowy conditions can cause this feature to malfunction. When passing a semi coming from the opposite direction the snow it kicks up will cause your car to apply the brakes very hard, harder than I would in normal winter conditions. When it does this it is hard to judge keeping the vehicle straight and also keeps you in the snow cloud much longer. The other thing that is very stressful is the fear of being rear ended. They would not expect or be aware of the vehicle in front of them suddenly doing half the highway speed.
I just purchased a 2024 Outback package option 21. We were driving on a 55mph highway with minimal hills and no traffic. My husband used the cruise for the first time. With the cruise on the engine RPM was changing nonstop. With cruise off the RPM held steady and didn’t fluctuate. At this point we feel that we can’t use the cruise. It wouldn’t be economical. We don’t want a vehicle that you can’t use the cruise on.

I've had my Forester Sport for two months now and I'm appreciating these videos.
I've noticed that the cruise control lane centering likes to place my car very close to the right line at the side of the road, even on a long straightaway. If I let it do what it wants, there's about 4-5 times more space on the drivers side than the passenger side which I'm sure annoys the heck out of drivers in the lane to the right of me and I'm annoyed that it keeps dragging me off center.
Is the centering technology adjustable so that I can get it set to center me with equal space on both sides of the car? If not, I'm going to quit using it unless I plan to stay in the slow lane.
Yes mine does the same! It's really bad when you're next to a semi with the long spikes on the wheel hubs. Freaks me out.
I was so excited to have the lane centering feature on my ‘20 Outback but sadly ran in to the exact same thing. My arms would get tired from how much I kept having to pull the car to the left to stop it from being right on the right line.

adaptive cruise is great on two lane no pass mtn roads if the car ahead of you is not as sure as you. the car tracks at the distance you select and controls the speed accordingly. im not in a hurry anyway since the only thing i have to look forward to is a dead end so i get to enjoy the ride up or down the mountain road.
When in AVH is engaged, are the break lights on?
If not, this situation is an accident waiting to happen.

Alex, I bought a 2024 Outlook last month. After owning it for about a week, I noticed that the red light for the alarm is always on, with the car unlocked. I took it to the dealer and the service writer told me the alarm light is supposed to be on all the time. I have owned a number of cars and the only time that alarm light is on is when car is locked. Is alarm light supposed to be on constantly? If not, how do I set it so that it only lights when the car is locked.

Alex. I have a 2023 Subaru Forester. If I have only conventional cruise control on does the Pre-Collision Braking activate if the Forester gets too close too the vehicle in front (i.e. no collision distant is set) ? Secondly does the Pre-Collision Braking activate if driving with no cruise control on and you are approaching too close to the vehicle in front (car in front makes abrupt stop) ? Can I assume the Eyesight cameras are always on and working unless I specifically deactivate the pre-collision braking manually with the deactivate button. Thanks

I have a 19 forester sport. I saw at a car show they had the headlights strobe from end to end, like the light moved up and down the led bar. Do you know how to access that feature. It seemed to work on all the led headlight Subaru’s on display.
I have found that using X-mode in the winter does nothing if you're using all season tires. If you're on a snowy incline and all four wheels don't have traction, you're not going anywhere. The owner's manual states that you should use snow tires in the winter which pretty much eliminates the need for X-mode.
I own a 2021 Subaru cross track sport and it does not have auto light high beams. What’s up with that?

I stopped using the lane departure assist because i live in the city and its always picking up on cracks in the road, which makes it feel unsafe when that happens going around a turn and the steering wheel tightens up. My question is will the auto start stop shut off the engine if the turbo has not cooled down to an acceptable temperature?

EDIT: I've never used X Mode. You suggested to use it when the weather might cause the roads to be slippery, I'll try that.
I was under the impression X Mode is for off-roading, but it's OK to use in normal everyday driving if conditions are bad?
thank you for your videos I have learned a lot. We got a 2025 forester touring, and really enjoy the tech. I have to say i like both the stop and hold and the engine off features [boy not everyone does tho LOL] but... it seems to not want to turn off, and i think part of it is i'm using the hold feature. I think once maybe it both turned off the engine and put on the brake, but mostly it brakes... and the engine runs.... I know you can fiddle with pushing the brake harder but that does not seem to engage the engine off feature.

Hi Alex, we like the advanced cruise control but hate the warning beeps when a car enters or exits within our set range. Is there anyway to silenced it?

I checked this theory. Even a 2 pound reduction in my Legacy, resulted in a smoother ride, & better handling. It is a strange balance.

Alex, have you done a vehicle on cleaning the interior of these subies? I just bought a 24 obw and need recommendations on what kinds of supplies I should be using. Like how do people clean that dash when it gets dusty?
Someone recommended you use one of those swiffers you know those anti-static dusters I've used it once and it's worked very well
Swiffer. And once the dust is gone use a lens cleaner to finish.
I use a microfiber cloth either dry or slightly damp. I keep one in my car for touch ups when I am sitting in the car while waiting.

I have a 2023 Forester and thank you for your teaching videos. You may have covered this topic before, however my question is what is the benefit of the mpg bar above the speed limit indicator? One side is yellow and the other side is green. How does seeing this indicator help me drive to get better mileage? Is this indicator necessary? Can I get rid of it? Thanks

I hate it when eyesite shuts down due to snow or rain and it disabled Cruise with it.
I just encountered this last night. Didn't scrape the frost from my windshield well enough, and cruise wouldn't work until defrosters fixed it. Now I know how to turn it on!
I have a 2022 Forester PREMIUM. As I have been reading online, a lot of people are having issues with Starlink and Apple Car Play. When using Car Play and maps for navigation, it starts up fine, then shuts down. Comes back on, shuts down. Last time, the entire screen was inaccessible with the radio still playing,but all control was gone. Couldn’t use volume or even turn it off. I have read this is a big issues with a couple of years models. Any real fixes for this? It did have the update last year, but that did not fix anything.
