Anyone can do crazy, but Yuasa is among a very select few who can do crazy in an extremely meaningful way. He's easily my favorite anime director. There's true profundity in his entire body of work.
The Tatami Galaxy is probably my all-time favourite anime series. Its crazy imagery, its particular take on loneliness and self-apology, paired with one of the most satisfying endigs make it an undiscovered classic. I can't wait until you make a video about it.
I know this comment is old but I couldn't agree more! I just discovered this gem a while ago and it's immediately up there among my absolute favourite anime shows. It blew my mind.
I would have brought up Cat Soup, Kemonozume and the Kickstarter campaign for Kick-Heart, but that being said, this still covers what it covers really well.
Lu over the wall and The Night is Short, Walk On Girl are two of my favourite movies of all time, so I was really excited to see them mentioned here! Awesome video.
Tatami galaxy and the night is young are some of my favorite anime/movie of all time, their is nothing really like them but if I had to explain what they are like it’s like flcl and welcome to the nhk had a baby and then fed it crack
Though his new stuff is really good, i wish he wouldn't concern himself too much with "marketable" projects. I want to see another fully "Yuasa" project with no restraints
The Tatami Galaxy is some of the best stuff I've ever seen in animation. I know I'll be rewatching it. It's what really sold me on Yuasa. I just adore the concept and execution. And it's also really funny, as well as genuinly touching. Mind Game is absolutely fascinating. I didn't care for all the over-sexualization and perviness (some bits really felt like fetish material), but other than that, incredible. I definitely had a blast with all the artistic creativity, the mixing of different animation style and different media altogether. Lu was the first movie by him I saw, and while it was nice, I think it's not as good as some of his other works. It has some really strong bits but I felt like it sort of fell apart in the second half, idk. Yuasa is such a unique and fascinating director. I feel like all his works (that I've seen so far) are incredibly life-affirming. I'm so excited to watch more (I seriously can't wait to get my hands on Inu-Oh).
I have to admit I have been sleeping on this man and his work and I need to stop cause in this stale anime industry he is truly the breath of fresh air that we need
It's not crazy for the sake of crazy, but it's crazy because life is crazy, because the universe is crazy, and sometimes crazy is the best way to showcase what exactly is happening. Best quote for 2020😅
Arkada! I absolutely loved the piano insert I heard at the 12:33 mark, I swear Tatami Galaxy is my Top 1 anime EVER. It means a lot to me, the narrative, the characters, the soundtrack and the artstyle. I do hope you make that stand-alone Tatami video sooner than later!
I was introduced to his work thanks to that Adventure time episode, and I saw MindGame a while back on Adult Swim. I am also planning on watching Devilman Crybaby soon and maybe hunt down a copy of Night is Young. So I'm pretty sure I have found a new favorite director to keep tabs on.
Jasmine Miller make sure to watch Tatami May Galaxy before watching The Night is Short to have a greater appreciation for his works, and to watch Ping Ping the Animation too since it’s great.
Thank you very much for bringing my attention to this! I'd love to see more cult classics covered by you! Even if briefly! Have you considered doing more videos that cover different works unified by some theme, even other than sharing a director? :)
Mind Game is my favorite work of his so far, and one of my favorite movies period. Like you said, it's because it perfectly captures the craziness of life and in some ways, that makes it beautiful.
To call Yuasa “just an artiste” is kind of doing a disservice to his whole schtick. Yes, he has absurdly massive set pieces and quieter introspective works that look absurdly high art (like, seven layers of irony art), but before he started doing original works, he cut his teeth and honed his trademark anti-anime style through Crayon Shin-Chan and Chibi Marako-Chan films, two ubiquitous mainstays of Japanese culture. If I had to pin down what his whole deal is, Yuasa is a pop artist through and through. He takes low art like getting shot in the ass, explosive sex, masochistic strongmen, and mondo wet dreams, and somehow make you care about them. He directed a weird passion project funded exclusively by Kickstarter, guest animated an episode of Adventure Time, and even dropped Devilman Crybaby, an anime that reinvented the image of Netflix. While he wasn’t the first Japanese Anime director to create for the international audience in mind, he was the first to jumpstart the trend. I can’t really do justice to his entire career, but his ultimate success is due to him making works for a generation of post-modern Otaku who think FLCL is the dumbest smartest thing ever and got to see nerd culture go mainstream. Unlike any other director, he has his finger on what people think is cool and ramps it to an il/logical conclusion.
I think Ping Pong was actually the first thing I saw by him. I loved The Night is Short, Walk on Girl though, and really should go back and check out Tatami Galaxy.
HOLD UP, u played with my feelings in that last snap. Expected the screen shattering but instead my expectations got shattered. Other than that, Yuasa is awesome ty for dis vid.
I Love Masaaki Yuasa he's one of my top favorite anime directors within the industry due to his unique & highly creative abstract style of both animation and art. I like that his works differ from the normal generic cookie-cutter anime type of aesthetic or animation that isn't bonded by limitations, my most favorite movie of his is Mind Game.
Ahhh Yeah the director i liked the most over the last years. Ping Pong will be for ever my favorite anime and im honestly pretty glad that i was able to share the experience of watching the night is short with one of my best friends in the movie theater and i hope masaaki yuasa will never stop producing stuff
+Glass Reflection, Personaly after his recent work on Devilman Crybaby I'd love to see this mad man adapt one of the Go Nagai mecha series to be more specific the recent incredibly violent manga reinterpretations Mazinger Zero or Getter Robo Devoultion. Both are masive acid trips involving cosmic horror power level mecha and both make even his adaption of Devilman and even more so the source material tame and kid friendly by comparison. I read a recent intreview the man had and he did say he had intrest in doing some of Go Nagi's other work in the future after he finishes up his curent projects espacly Mazinger and Cutie Honey which disappoints me that he said he espacly intrested in doing something with Honey due to how lewd her material can get and I admit she needs a good adaptation after Cutie Honey Universe but damit I would kill to see him do Mazinger Zero or Getter Robo Devolution as I feel he's one of the few people in the modern anime industry who would know how to do the levels of brutal and bizarre violence those stories have in them right. Granted there are a few others but not many -_-
basically watch "mind game" "the night is short, walk on girl" "lu over the wall" "tatami galaxy" "devilman crybaby" they are all amazing you wont regret it
i have a hard time looking at any of masaaki yuasas work as anything more than the work of a stoner with a pen. only samurai champloo caught my interest

I come from the future. New Masaaki Yuasa anime was just announced. (Eizouken)
it looks so good!
Cool
I came for even far more far future
And the show is literally a anime production story with creativity and style and story over 9000
And it's one of the most inspirational animes I've ever seen one that utilizes it's media to basically tell you to go and do the stuff you love
I come from the even far future! There probably won't be a season 2 and the manga translations for english aren't really caught up

tru cat soup and kemonozume are one of his best but all of them are his best tbh
Also, FUNimation, where’s the Tatami Galaxy R1 physical, you cowards?
Theyre releasing a dub of nichijou even though it came out in 8 years ago, so hey , anything is possible.
I see yuasa, I like.
Everyone always forgets Kemonozume. I hope, if you review the TV shows he did, you bring it up.
Lu over the wall and The Night is Short, Walk On Girl are two of my favourite movies of all time, so I was really excited to see them mentioned here! Awesome video.
"Ride your wave"
You guys need to watch this
^ it hit really hard on me
Finally! My favorite UA-camr is talking about my favorite Director!
He is the Wes Anderson/Tarantino of anime. I love him. Tatami Galaxy is my favorite anime of all time.
Damn this is a high quality content ark keep up the good work
Tatami galaxy and the night is young are some of my favorite anime/movie of all time, their is nothing really like them but if I had to explain what they are like it’s like flcl and welcome to the nhk had a baby and then fed it crack
nice way to explain it even tho i havnt see the night is young yet

about time you made another video about a Masaaki Yuasa product, but not a whole video on all of them!
oh hey J.Deku lol

been following him since mind game (200x). never felt disappointed by his work
Really enjoyed this look at a director's body of work, would love to see more content like this.
Not to mention, he's really good at drawing
Ping Pong, The Tatami Galaxy and Kaiba were all great anime
I agree with you

Wow, I just started watching Tatami Galaxy yesterday. What perfect timing.
Did watch devil cry man, didn’t really gel with it. But recently saw mind game and Im in love just the animation is so muchhhhhhhhhhhh to enjoy.
1:13 oh!!! i didn't know that the dancing scene in eizouken is a reference to one of his previous works! definitely gotta watch his other works

I was hoping ull make a video on tatami galaxy and i still hvnt got it... man im devastated
12:18 I understood that reference. I liked the little bit of Flash Gordon I saw long ago.
Me: *Sees the cosplay.*

I think there's a lot of people can do things like this , there's plenty of animation and short films on UA-cam that show that .
Loved Mind Game.

I was actually thinking about Kaiba the moment this review began.
I had no idea HE directed Kaiba!
... you've got to review Kaiba someday...

Wooow that’s my favorite episode of adventure time!
Bro, How do you get the themes ost of “Night so short, Walk on girl “ :))
Dude i am still waiting for your review on tatami galaxy
A cig-smoking fish god... that is already intriguing!
I watched most of Masaki Yuasa’s work. The only movie I didn’t watch was the Mindgame

So... Surrealism, right?
That's what I love about his works!
I haven't watched something of Masaaki Yuasa's that I haven't enjoyed yet.
