eyyyyyyyy. i made an AMV of this awhile ago, love this movie
Mind Game really is the kind of "we have one shot to make this; let's make it count" kind of anime production that we never get anymore. Yuasa is definitely one of the most important and visionary directors in the industry, and I can't wait to see his new film Inu-Oh.
it was a rarity back then tooo really only possible because it was cheap and a producer and founder of a studio wanted it made
I always forget that he’s one of my favorite animators/directors. Cat Soup has always had some sort of profound space in my heart. Need to take time and binge up all of his works. They bring a beautiful catharsis to everything in animation and life. Reminding you what it all can be and what’s possible. What freedom, meaning and truth look like in a way that jolts you back to life and makes you feel less constrained as a human just by watching them.
Absolutely this. Only… I never forgot. I have a freakin Yuasa bluray collection. I rarely buy physical media anymore besides books
Remember watching this on Toonami, as an April fools prank, all Japanese dubbed, and with subtitles to boot
At first I was weirded out about it all, but when it all came together in the end, it became one of the most magical experiences I had gotten through
huh thats a strange kinda joke lol
It's pretty sad that the movie was sold as a "prank." It's one of the best animated films of the 21st century.
We watched it for the first time together and we never knew it. Cryptic
There aren’t enough video essays on this magnificent film. I watched this movie for the first time at the beginning of the pandemic and it did a number on me. Just saw it at the right time I guess.
a while back it was a lot harder to find, but since the kickstarter not so much a lot copies about
haven't watched the video yet but this film means a lot to me bc I watched it when I was in a situation that I didn't want to be in, won't go into details it's personal. So to me, Mind Game isn't just a very weird out there anime movie, it's more personal to me.
Glad to see you covering it.
Free jazz of animation is the best term for that final sequenve for sure
Mind Game is the most Yuasa we'll ever have! This movie is so insane it made me forget they were in a whale.
He actually said in an interview it directly changed his approach to animation because he realised he'd went too far away from the commercial idea and wouldn't keep s career if kept this up lol
Mindgame is probably my favorite movie ever, period. It deserves way more attention that it has. Thank you for the great video!
no probs
Im sooo glad you covered this! Yuasa has always been one of my favorite artists. Mind Game was such an experiencial watch. Yuasa's directing really stressed on a whole new definition of movement and visual language, it continues to push me to feel weird goosebumps up to now. Im always glad to see where he takes his works even if he's stretching himself to be more "marketable". Whatever yuasa works on always has this distinct touch that you can trace back to his influences and it just makes it seem like he loves doing and learning about his job.
Well he had finally hit it big I hear there's a new movie out somewhere of his although think it's still on the movie festival run
@@Stevem oh yeah! I saw him talk about that somewhere. I think it was called Inu-oh. Maybe yuasa was doing a "one for you-one for me" type of thing with Netflix in order to get enough for something he can go all in on.
i think his style has just changed over time really, he now has to think beyond himself because of the company he create, i hope his new project is good
Oh damn, of course you’ve seen that “doodling with Yuasa” chat too
I love this film so much. Seen it countless times. It‘s always my no. 1 recommendation when someone asks for my favorite animated movie.
HAHA, finally this movie gets the recognition it deserves. Thank you for covering it. I think this is my favourite anime movie of all time.
Thank you for deciding to highlight studio 4c’s work. I’ve been a fan of their work for more then a decade. I try to recommend their films whenever I can to whoever will listen to mixed results. I allways slip at least one of their films into anime nights where I can. I love that they take big risks on experimental anime considering the budgets involved. Their films are always filled with eye candy and are almost psychedelic on first viewing. Their animations have an experiential feeling to them and can alter the mind in their full context. Their a spotlight for the insane talent that can exist when artists go full force on their weirdest inspirations.
especially pre morimoto departure afterwards i have a more mixed perspective on their output
Absolutely love this movie. An artsy guy showed it to me and it’s been my favorite anime movie since. Even more than perfect blue. Watched probably 5 times and I never get bored.
Wonderful! I'm so happy to see you cover Mind Game! Thank you
Fabulous work!
Been wanting you to cover Mind Game for a long time, it was worth waiting~!
I saw this film two years ago on New Years Eve, was talking it up big to a few people who's opinions on art I respected. Kind of forgot about it until this video showed up in my sub feed, glad you are introducing it to people.
Just watched it last night. Absolutely loved it! I have been thinking about metaphysics a lot and had gotten to this level of writing about it in stories. And it was similar to stuff I started writing about levels of conscientious & reality. It’s beautiful!
I legit was thinking about this movie and wanted to see this again but I didn't remember the name so thanks for this.
One of the best finales in cinema
It's pretty wild
What is to FEEL love? What is to FEEL be loved? What is to FEEL be running? What is to FEEL scared? What is to FEEL sad? What is to FEEL angry? What is to FEEL be dreaming? What is to FEEL happy? What is to FEEL dead? What is to FEEL live?
That's Mind Game! FEEL❗FEEL above all, FEEL beyond everything. Thank you, mr. Yuasa, to teach us how to FEEL
(you say you have seen many animes?.......you ain't seen NOTHING YET)
Yuasa is such an interesting talent. I love how experimental the style is, I love the creatives behind this project
It's one of those how does this movie exist kinda projects
I love this movie, for all its craziness.
agreed. it's one of my fave movies ever
Simply my favorite film
I'm so happy we're covering Mind Games. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this film.
Must be pretty rewatchable
I love you Stevem
I love Mind Game, I watched it last year and its my favorite animated movie right after Redline.
i watched this once years ago, i dont think i could watch it a second time, my god it is alot.
It can be quite exhausting
One of my favorite things ever
Mind Game and Tekkon Kinkreet are both just the most beautiful pieces of animation ever made. Growing up watching typical shonen anime and reading very similar looking manga, these 2 movies change everything for me.
Mind Game is definitely something else. We need more abstract animations like it.
Ah you did it actually :) I don't know how i missed it. Thank you :D. It's the best!
copyright claim ahhaah
One of my favourite movies. When I first watched it I thought it was going to be an easy and exciting adventure movie or something, but the extreme discomfort and shock I felt watching the first few minutes jolted me to attention. Came away afterwards with such a bizarre feeling of confusion and conflicting emotions that no other film has ever had a similar effect on me, barring maybe Gaspar Noe's Enter The Void - but I don't like that film anywhere near as much as Mind Game. Great video mate.
Finally that awesome Yuasa guy!
he has a new movie coming out called Inu-oh and i am sooooo excited
Never seen this one but it looks beyond interesting definitely will be giving this a go
Never been easier to get it now
Holy Cannoli… this studio is amazing… has been and still is. That DC work … I hope they lined their pockets.
These videos are really good… I’ve been watch for a while , and these seem extra exciting. Keep’m comin’
Trying to!
@@Stevem seriously, whatever Team thing you have going… it’s sweet 😘
@@StephenRansom47 no team just me
@@Stevem I’ve been watch this channel Hazel… She’s out there, just kicking shit around but it’s cute and fun…
You and Beyond Ghibli are so polished. It’s like Ben Burn or something.
This ‘pool party’ is great 👍 while it lasts.
joe from beyond ghibli is a nice dude
i guess i should watch the movie again.
Yeah that's a mind trip and a delight to watch, it is wild, so Genius Party next? please?
It won't be next but I'll probs have a video on both at them towards the end
This film and Tatami Galaxy made me a Yuasa junkie
Oh God. This movie
Aye, 1001 Nights is EXACTLY what came to mind when first saw it.
Yeah that level of abstraction with mind game taking it further in a different way
BRO WHEN THEY HAVE PALMTREE PANIC GOOD FUTURE JP IN THE BEGGINING OF THE VIDEO, THATS HOW YOU KNOW ITS GONNA BE GOOD
The best
Yuasa is great, and this film is incredible. Though Japan Sinks 2020 was horrendous.
What's the deal with the theatrical version of that
@@Stevem I had no idea such a thing even existed, sufficed to say I won't be watching that thing...
More yuasa videos from you stevem
Yuasa only did one more thing at 4c if I recall
oh shit i'm about to watch this one; wild
Every one is the best! (Except for night is short walk on girl, that one is best best) But holy fuck, I'm excited to see someone delve into Yuasa!
And none of them would exist without this one
@@Stevem Yes, that is correct. The masterpiece that started it all. Yuasa to me has always had an interesting style, where he wants you to know that it's not live-action, even with his more realistic looking ones like this or ping pong. It's a breath of fresh air in anime.
Really awesome animation, borderline experimental if you will!
art house as fuck
mind gamer epic moment swag
Truuuuuuu
Hey, every Masaaki Yuasa movie is the best Masaaki Yuasa Movie!!
Yeah, that's pretty much true. His series are great, too. Like Satoshi Kon, he's consistently interesting and has a visual style that you can clock instantly. I'd say Walk On, Girl is my favorite work of his, but it's such a close race. His series Kaiba also really sticks out in my memory.
@@SIDEKICKDUSTY seems kon was a fan too even though he didn't really watch anime post directing career
that title is a bold statement
Bold statements make people click
@@Stevem and it worked you swindler
Disclaimer : this video was made prior to the release of Inu-Oh.
I would do anything to find quality Inu-oh videos like this one but there seems to be none currently unfortunately
This is his 2nd best movie :0
Based Yuasa enjoyer
-Play Chad musical track-
Still find it weird that Yuasa has a UA-cam channel for random animations
He uploads to Twitter random animations too his fantastic planet one is pretty great
watched this when i was watching all of yuasa's animated series/films/shorts, don't dislike it, the animation is something else, but definetly wouldn't watch again out of enjoyment. Still, i'd say to everyone interested in 4c and Yuasa's works to watch at least once.
its an acquired taste im sure in comparison to his other stuff
@@Stevem agreed!
Will you talk about the berserk movie trilogy
Yeah I watched them the other day, I have things to say about them from a 4c perspective there's a fair bit to bring up among how it compares to other adaptations
@@Stevem wow that was fast
Yuasa and watanabe work in this, hum gona check it out then
Watanabe was something who used to always give yuasa work so you can see them going back and forth they met when Watanabe was in the Animatrix
@@Stevem yes he directed Two shorts there if i'm not mistaken
You mean the best movie
Shrug
Mind Games was a complete Mind F****k
In the name lol
@@Stevem Yeah the title delivered on the promise.
Where can I watch it?
where can i watch mind game?
No way. "Lu Over the Wall" is the best. "Mind Game" is hurt badly by an ending that feels like a big build up to nothing.
Honestly, I hate this movie...
Lol
I love you Stevem
