    Mum asked me to make her some new toilet brush holders since the old ones broke after four years of use. A perfect beginner lathe project, because it's basically turning a really simple bowl with no deep hollowing and very thick walls. Great to get used to the bowl gauge and learning what you can do with it.

    Lovely idea with a serious drawback for me. I have a cat who loves chewing the bristles on brushes. I even bought him own toilet brush, but he still prefers the "seasoned" one.

    Missed you! The little section about the lathe is actually a great little buyer's guide to what to look for. As a person who doesn't own a lathe it's tough to know what to look for, this will help a lot if I look into buying a lathe (and remember this!)

    I always enjoy your bloopers. I think you do them very well. A little bit of humility to temper a really well put together with serious video editing. Have you thought about doing collaborations with anyone on youtube? If so, who would you have your eye on? I think I happened upon your videos while I was looking for wooden blower impellers, from Matthias Wandel. Also I just realized how much time I have spent shuffling around these sentences to get them into a logical order, thoughtfulness breeds thoughtfulness, and thank you for yours.

    Nice project but I would think epoxy finish would be good so it could be washed. Don't think I would like getting all that junk soaking into the wood.Looks like a great place for mold to grow.

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  5 років тому +3

      Fair point. We hadn't any mold issues with the old ones though

    • @tylerpestell
      @tylerpestell 5 років тому +1

      I was thinking the same thing... though with epoxy you would see all the residue easily and you would probably want to clean it more often whereas it being unfinished allows the wood to just absorb and air dry and just kind of get a natural discolored look.
      Since you copied This old Tony go ahead and copy Matthias and experiment with one that has epoxy and one without ;-)

    Your M42 bandsaw blade was a shrewd buy.
    I don't know the German equivalent for M42 but here in the US M42 is identifies a very hard cobalt high speed tool steel noted for its resistance to chipping and hot hardness. M42 is commonly used as welded tooth tips for saw band stock: therefore, the term "bi-metal."
    I use bi-metal saw bands on my metal cutting band saw where it outlasts carbon steel 3 or 4 to 1 on scaley hot rolled structural steel. Since the bi-metal blades are only double the price of carbon steel they are certainly worth the extra cost.
    They will pay off sawing plywood (some glues are quite abrasive,) carelessly handled rough lumber with ground in dirt, re-sawing salvaged painted lumber, and high silica woods like some species of cedar and cypress and many species of tropical hardwoods. BTW, you won't be file sharpening your bi-metal blades.

    Hello Marius
    Just a little comment that I think sanding would be good for this particular use case, because I believe that a fine sanding helps the wood to be more resistant to water.
    Also what about a water resistant finish ? :)

    hmm... about the finish... I think lacquer wouldn't be a bad idea, since the toilet water dripping down the brush can now be absorbed in the wood.
    Do you also have Record power set of chisels? How do you like it? I got them with my dml305 but I guess I have to regrind the bowl gouge to the grind you have. have to find time for that... and the parting tool just sucks (it's 1cm wide...). Do you know anything about Two cherries lathe chisels? Are they any good? I can't find out if the steel is HSS or not... Does it matter anyway?
    And of course welcome back :) It's always a pleasure watching your videos. Even though there is a lot of toilet humour :)

      I hate talking about stuff like:" I'm sorry I didn't post a video for so long...now I'll post more again...etc". That's at least one minute of wasted video time and if you watch this video in a month or so, nobody will care about that. That's rather confusing and I like to make videos that also make sense in the future. So I just start with the project.
