Thanks for this. I'm a 62 yr old engineer who can't quit . When I tell people what I did in my life they say, "Oh.Cool'" They have no idea.
Tell us.
Any tips?
The sounds they captured in the recording are so good. The arrangement is a masterpiece.
I can't even begin to express how amazing it is to be able to see your mixing art again!
Thank you! Cheers!
He is mixing backwards, first guitars, bass, overheads, then adding details of the drums. And finally vocals. Great to see how a nice and warm bath is created where the vocals get their treat.
It's probably because he sharply got the sound in his head, such a legendary song. So he goes with the order of frequency spectrum heavy instruments first.
Man, I'm living my failed dreams through these videos... Spent my teens teaching myself production and recording bands, started on a cassette 4-track, got my hands on a 16-track reel-to-reel then later at uni ADAT to Cubase to Nuendo, even got to use a RADAR system at a project studio. But I didnt dare to go the tea boy tape op route and became a electronic engineer instead. Although I did spend 5 years making hifi. But it didn't pay well so I'm in semiconductors now.
Thanks for kindling the memories and for the wonderful listening experience! Sounds superb on my ATC SCM40s.
Did you end up studying Music Production or Audio Engineering?
I can relate ❤
I never realized there were gang vocals on this song… wow
right
Same
Wow indeed... amazing
…amazing👍👍👍
Yes amazing ! I don't think is kept on the record though
I don't care if these are stems or how close it is to the original. I just absolutely love seeing people who know their own gear and are super comfortable with their own setup creating really solid output. Thank you for sharing.
This intro launch me in space melancholic rip Mr Cornell 🙏🫶
there was only One. Damn, do I wish we still had him.
Thanks for coming back... those of us ITB now, but who grew up on consoles, enjoy this more than you know.
Please. Begging you. Dissect more Soundgarden. This is just the best. The real justice for this is found in headphones at a very loud volume 🙏🙏🙏
This song is a testament to the band and Brendan O'Brian's original mix. What a legend.
Absolutely!
Loved this! Great mix! Don't forget about the amazing tracking of Jason Corsaro. RIP. Why not pan the OHs? I have to raz you about pulling down that master fader so much but we know how that goes lol. Beautiful studio and great outboard. Oh and can you send me the PT files pretty please 🙏🏼. Subscribed!
The dual wield pultec swish and flick will never cease to satisfy
The satisfaction is real.
the king returns again ❤
never clicked so fast on a video... Sir Duskin, you have been an inspiration to me and a distant partner in my mixing process and learning journey ! Thanks for posting again on this channel, it feels good to be back in the studio with you !
Great to hear!
Dude, same! ("Never clicked so fast on a video...")
Amazing, when the Distressors are put into the signal path!
You Tube randomly put this video on my feed im glad it did awesome studio and awesome mixing thanks 🙏
Awesome! Thank you!
this is one of the most fascinating things i've ever witnessed
As someone who only gets to mix in the box these days, this was therapy. An interesting take too showing there is no ‘right’ - this quick mix sounds more raw, slightly more open and live.
Wow I Just literally acquired a used SSL Aws 948 Delta in mint condition for around $45,000 plus shipping from an estate sale. It’s currently in storage and waiting the completion of my studio I am setting up in my guest house. Can’t wait to get it finished. 👌🏾💪🏾
These videos get me so excited… Great stuff man
Stereo channels! Lucky!
As a vocalist i appreciate this absolutely stunning and wide mix. And of course the louder vocals 🧞
So deeply satisfying watching the mix thicken up as the video goes on, knowing what goes into getting your ears tuned to this kind of quick decision making.
The sheer amount of energy you got out of that song is amazing! Few things sounding a little harsh when comparing to modern digital mixes but man! That power!
@4:33 when that screaming guitar fill kicks in...I never heard it like that, so warm and pronounced. Absolutely wonderful!
This really changed my mind about the Clariphonic parallel equalizer. Like night and day.
Brother this is God Tier mixing! I can feel the confidence through the screen. I pray I reach this level of expertise in my lifetime. Much Respect !! ☝🏾❤
I loved every single second of this. I could live in this track for another 15 minutes or more. I really fucking miss Chris Cornell.
Please more!!!!! I love your videos ❤❤❤❤ much love!❤
0:45 is a UBK Clariphonic (a parallel high-boosting EQ)
11:40 is a Maag EQ4 (a wide band EQ with an air band)
I do use an exciter at 0:45 on the bass guitar, but it's not on the whole mix.
What did you use the Maag on? Thank you for the great video!
I miss Chris and Soundgarden😢 Awesome video. Their music was out of this world. Thank you for this ❤
This is what I normally try to do (in my mind) with every song I love or beat me straight in my stomach and heart. I try to listen every single part of the track searching for the less evident ones..the sticks in “Paranoid Android” for example.
I watched this video at least 3 times in a row, and it’s an amazing job! The analog mixing ART is so fascinating. I hope to see more videos like this. Thanks a lot
Holy Shitballs! No idea what you are doing but hearing the depth of tracks in this mix is amazing! Thank you so much.
Please do more. We will pay!
I love this song and its amazing to hear it dissected like this.
Goes to show what’s not in the original mix that made it what we know and love, and loving the elements with all the brightness and clarity which you were able to put a modern spin on that made this such an interesting video to watch in its entirety. Thank you
Dude, you’ve single handedly caused my GAS to explode. Thanks for sharing and showing what / when you are doing things. Very cool of you!
Take care-
That crowd singing backing was ace to hear as I hadn't heard it by itself before. To also hear the full ending unlike the version on the album was also a really nice thing to catch. PS: I haven't stopped dribbling over all your outboard gear...
Really just goes to show if you play good and record well on the way in that it doesn't really need much. Oh to have this quality before mixing! Sounds awesome! Love these videos.
What does Soundgarden think about this?
It's better than the original mix because the instruments, especially vocals and drums, are clearer.
Greater sound volume
Incredible!
Don't stop, we want more videos from great artists
Ok, this one gets saved into my 'Must See TV' playlist now - this is just one of 'those' records. Awesome seeing you sprint mix this and hearing the parts isolated.
What an ear you have, you are a master at mixing!
Appreciate that
most of the work was already done.
I've been hoping you were going to post on this channel again. I love watching this process, and Even though it's not 100% (About 98%), It still sounds great! Look forward to seeing more!
Greatest rock snare drum tone in history.
You're crazy friend.
Dude. You gotta stop making me cry! Brilliant! Can’t wait for the next one!
So happy to move you! But let's face it, its all about Chris Cornell.
@@DanDuskin For sure! And Matt! Your mix-throughs give us all an added perspective about how to arrive at a similar place; and during your process, at least in my experience, our brains are completely tickled all along the journey! H/T! So glad you’re back!
For all those ignorant commenters. Yes, acrobatic mixing is a thing, and it does produce superior sound quality. It is not a coincidence that bar mixers perform in a similar fashion. Also, yes, turning those knobs a microdegree seemingly randomly has a massive effect on the music. This guy is a pro, that's how he got his Apple Vision Pro in the first place, which is just the best way to make youtube videos, giving us the finest details of his head movements.
What an artwork that truly is, never realized it from that point of view
Hey Dan, it's Rob Hill here!!! Glad I ran into this video.
Wow, Rob! Killer!
This is so incredibly insightful, I never realized even half of what was going on in the mix, even though black hole sun is one of my favorite songs of all time. This channel is such a golden nugget!
20 mins of black hole sun is heaven sent
one of the most beautiful and haunting songs to ever be written.
this is excellent. you have a great outboard collection and a even better taste on how to use those machines. love what the dbx and AMS are doing with that snare.
ART at very high level... 👌
I just want to hop there and mix a 12 minutes extended version. What a wonderful insight of this classic.
You are incredibly talented, keep up the good work!
Thank you! Will do!
Thosecrowd chants are INSANE

I heard that also
First time here. I'll be back for sure!
It's not about doing it better, making it better, being better than someone else, it's about looking at it from a different angle, adding some different shades and highlights to what was already a masterpiece! It's art, it has techniques and technology, of course, but the result is pure art!
I like your mix even more cause it just sounds so real!
Such a joy watching you work. Your mixes are incredible. Thanks for sharing! 🙏
Glad you enjoy it!
I’m such a huge Brendan O’Brien fan that I thought for sure I would hate whatever you did because you are walking on sacred ground, but you surprised me. I dig it. I do slightly prefer the sound of those weird SSL B style (feedback) modules on drum buss that Brendan uses just cuz I’ve listened to his records so many times that it has become what sounds “right” to me on rock drums, but your mix is cool. It’s wider and more open for sure. Outstanding job!
Incredible.
Nice! I can hear the backing vocal harmony, it sounds so good. 😊
Glad you like it!
Bringing in The Beatles box at 12:32 seems to be doing a lot of heavy lifting here....
Opened the voices, I cries
Very Very beautiful
So nice! Masterpiece! Thanks for mixing my favorite track!
The sounds on each track that comprise the song are epic on their own
Hell yeah! I was just rewatching your doobie brothers mix, pleasant surprise to see you uploading still!
This was absolutely amazing to watch!!!
Sounds great! OG mix was like 56 tracks. They tracked on 3 Studers if I recall. Something like 2-16's and a 24". That AWS looks so fun and fast
Definitely been waiting for another video!!!! So glad to see you back. We have missed seeing you and your process. LOVE IT!!!!
Honestly this is like visual ASMR
Thats awesome I never realized how well mixed this song is.
that alternative ending is the best! thank you!
I'm glad you posted again! Brilliant skills man❤
Intriguing to listen to the individual tracks! The record was produced by Michael Beinhorn but mixed by Brendan O'Brien.
Congrats.
This drummer is so so good. The sound of this record is mind blowing.
Nice 👍🏼 mix ! Love the use of clariphonic and the AMS so huge Tom’s spread on the stereo field !!
Thanks for listening
Insane 🤯
Those BV's are crazy! sounds like 30 people. Loved this Video. Analog life 4 ever
We need more of these!!!!
Really love the punchy feel of ths drum group, and it seems vocals have been compressed pretty well!
I can say for sure that I clearly prefer this mix compared to the original Daniel! It is brighter and punchier, has more wide perspective.
Impressive how many details exist that we cannot hear, unless we take each channel seperately!
Excellent work! 🖤🤘
crazy hearing this in my listening position... hearing things turn on, off, pan etc! better than any roller coaster!!!
Ha! Love it!
OH YOU ARE BACK BACK!! LETS GOOOO!!!!!!
Love listening to the raw mix when you have everything playing at once. Such an incredible track. I wish I the group BV was was a bit louder in the original mix though, that was really cool to hear.
No words, I just want to thank you for that! 1000% inspiration!🙌
Matt Cameron FTW.
Those ghost notes. Delicious
Incredible to hear this great tune polished up like you did it.. every tune should be mixed like this! (subbed) ✌
Imagine that? No Autotune, no vocal alignment, no "magic" plugins, no manipulation. Just a great song, a good performance, and an outstanding mix.
MASTER OF REALITY 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You've brought this song to a new whole level. Good job!
THE BEST DRUM SOUND EVER
A competência para fazer bem feito, eu admiro 🤌👏👏👏👍🏻

Same 😊
Whaou 🤩 SSL, Summit, Lexicon, disstressor, etc. And Soundgarden 🤤
This is awesome, and super cool you show us what different gear/values and tracks do to the sound!
This was dope!
Sure is good to see you doing your thing again. I enjoy thinking of the next move and you nail it once in a blue. Stoked on the New apple vision too. Really cool content you got here.
Thanks for the voting system man. As a student of music, this makes my day. Keep it up!
damn Chris's voice sounds great on this.
Nice mix bro. I like the harmonies a little louder like you did, sounds great. Definitely sounds bigger and brighter!! i miss great music.
What a pleasure to listen to Mr Duskin mixing in my control room... A dream came true! Last time I was wondering how cool it would be to have all this magnificent gear and here I am, elbows on my console, watching Daniel switching off the Bypass on his pair of Distressors and watching my own pair in my rack and saying "hey I've got these too now!! 😅"
So cool you're posting again! Awesome videos
your use of the pultecs and the gbuss are fantastic dude
This is extraordinary to see, thank you.
