@@joshuawilliams124 Come to think of it, I do notice it in the pre-chorus now. 4:02 is definitely noticeable in Daniel's mix. I just never really heard it in the original mix.
Some people are going to say that this sounds better just because "different" always sounds better when you are used to the original. However, in this case, that's not true. In this mix, he was able to enhance everything (not just 1 track, bass for example) so that the final mix, in my opinion, sounds even better than the original. I don't think the equipment is the reason, it's his ear. It was obvious to me in the first 10 seconds of the video that all of his equipment is just an extension of his brain...and he is the master of it. In his final mix, everything is more clear. The lead vocals are more out front, yet they don't drown out any of the other tracks. I can hear the lead guitar and bass more clearly also. Fantastic job Daniel..... you nailed it dude!
I keep coming back to this cause it's such an amazing example of understanding how to mix such an amazing song with so many layers and still staying true to the band. Fucking epic work
This song will forever remind me of going to Europe with 30 other students from my high school in April ‘83. Specifically riding the tube in London, playing this song over & over again on my Walkman.
That was like watching magic. Reminds me when I stood behind the sound engineer during Def Leppard at Fox Fest (Mud Fest) Seabird Iskand. 72 channels of magic. Back stage I witnessed (A few of us) Mr. Savage slip off stage during a song, and piss into a garbage can filled with ice and Snapple, and slip back on stage in time for his solo. A minute later the Stage Manager walks over and digs threw the snapple, grabs one, POP, chug. Pause..... smells his hand, bottle, hears us busting with laughter and he runs off. True story. Thanks for this video. Brought back awesome memories for me.
I’m 50, but remember the very first time I ever heard this song. I was 15, school had just let out, and I was home with my boom box tuned to WMMS in Cleveland, OH. The DJ talked about some festival in Europe where Def Leppard and their new album and single had been the hit of the show. Then that first guitar string sound followed by that classic riff. Then when you combined that hard rock guitar sound with the harmonies in the chorus. A new age had begun. It enraptured me instantly like no other song ever has.
There are VERY few mixes from the 80s that hold up against the standard of today, not so much the techniques but the gear has just got better by a mile.
Mike Shipley would have been super proud (RIP) the original engineer. I watched several of your videos, I love it. A real console with real classic outboard. Not 400 tracks but 24 to 32 which is more than enough. This mix is phenomenon top notch.. I had to listen and watch this video 4 times. This my favorite record by def leppard. Before the drummer lost his arm in that car accident. I have got to get me some distressors now as well as fatso, I love the LA3 and LA4. Many people are not hip to the LA4. The kick drum sound awesome. The vocals are upfront and clear. BRAVO BRAVO. thanks Daniel for sharing your mixing skills. Awesome.
You don’t know how happy this video has made me. This is my all time favorite Def Leppard song and to clearly hear all the different channel and that ending instead of the fade out was simply amazing!
Daniel Duskin you're a master engineer dude !! Great demo. I grew up on reel to reel masters in my dad's studio, it is absolutely THE manual transmission of recording engineering equivalent. Your skills are admirable. On a slight note my 13 year old asked if I knew about Equalization.... Boy ! We went into room sizes, carpet, concrete, wood rooms... Size of the room...acoustics..lows..highs..mids..decibels..hertz...megahertz...lol.... I said go to school if you're interested....a person who can EQ can have a job in any studio...
I had the great pleasure of working with the late great Mike Shipley who mixed all this stuff. Mutt worked with multiple slave reels and chances are good that these tracks were highly polished by the time these tracks were compiled. Sounds great but a lot of work went into prep before this stage was arrived at.
Me thinks someone used to be a live concert engineer… this reminds me of doing soundcheck on a new FOH console from scratch, sometimes the actual show in a festival slot! (without the muting). These days in my home studio, I don’t work NEARLY this fast unless under an extreme time constraint. Great job!! Excellent balances.
Final mix is at 8:36, for anyone who wants to come back and just enjoy that part. This is great, by the way! I think I agree with what others are saying in that this is a better mix than even the original, which is not a low bar by any means! I heard things in this mix that I had no idea even existed in the original, and the last 30 seconds or so was just absolutely phenomenal and makes me wish the album had this mix in it. Also, I am holding you personally responsible for any hearing damage I sustain from now on after finding this, because it is impossible to not turn this one up loud and rock out. I am joking of course! Keep up the good work!
The drums were sampled and played via a Fairlight CMI. They were not played live in the studio. The tempo is some weird 123.44 due to normal sync tape timing variations.
