    We have kept our hibiscus plant/tree for almost 30 years. The last couple of years had minimal blooms. Being that we could not recall when we last refreshed the soil, this last Spring I took outside to repot. Well to say it was rootbound would be an understatement. The roots were thicker than most of the trunk and branches. There was no "teasing out" the roots to be done. So, I sprayed all of the potting mix out and off the roots as possible with the hose. Put fresh potting mix in the pot and replanted her. She was left outside all Spring and Summer, dropping leaves from the high winds and watered every couple of days due to drought conditions. Before Labor Day she was sprayed off to get any dust and bugs off then a little insecticidal soap, then brought indoors.
    Now, she is at the front entrance of the house blooming like she has never bloomed before! I was doubtful she would ever bloom again after such rough treatment. We were so concerned that we took half a dozen cuttings in case she but the dust. Well now I have 6 plants growing nicely in containers alongside the "mother tree."

      This is super hopeful for me! I just got my fathers hibiscus plant because he hasn’t been getting any blooms off of it for almost a year maybe more now. So I’m researching and researching to see what could be wrong! He was also on city water so I wonder if just after some time city water, it’s just struggling now. The leaves are also turning yellow and some are turning brown. So I wonder if the plant is lacking a nutrient.

    Good info on the hibiscus! Yes, they are sensitive to water requirements. I learned of a very easy and inexpensive method to remove chlorine etc from regular tap water from a gardening You-Tuber: water conditioner for fish aquariums. Need ONE DROP per gallon of regular water. I purchased an 16 oz bottle of TAP water conditioner from Amazon for about $8. I put some into a dropper bottle to add to my watering can each time I water -- this bottle will last forever. And results have proven to me that it works for all my house plants and outdoor potted plants.

    Excellent advice. My Mum has had a hibiscus since before I was born and we're still using healthy cuttings from it! We live in the UK and have them indoors from October to early May, but in summer they love it outdoors...except if it's windy! If you leave them outdoors in extended strong wind, the leaves get limp and even shredded from drying and flapping and the flowers don't stand a chance. I always think of them as a tropical forest plant, hence them not needing too much extended sun and not liking the wind.

      Thank you. That's so cool that you guys are able to do that. I love hibiscus plants. Their flowers are just as pretty as a rose or an orchid. Definitely more colorful. I currently have two in a 6 in pot that are hanging out in my grow room under the LED. They're right at home. You should check out hidden valley hibiscus online. They have soooooo much information on hibiscus care and a huge online shop that you can purchase beautiful plants from at cheap prices too. I've gotten two from them and once spring hits I'm gonna buy more. Thanks for telling me about the wind. Generally I keep my smaller ones on the porch hidden by the house but the larger ones are out in the yard left to their own devices.

    In regards to watering with hard water.... would it be helpful to give my hibiscus (about the size of yours) a gallon of distilled water every couple of weeks, and the rest of the time continue watering with my hose (which might have hard water). Also do you know if this would be helpful for my other plants as well, to occasionally give them a good watering with distilled water? Thanks so much for this super helpful video.

    • @831mrscardoso

      I no longer water any of my plants but my money tree with tap water. Ever since I've started using distilled water my plants have flourished and not one has died or been sick. I'd say stick to distilled and not use hard water on your plants. You can even set up some pots/containers to catch rain water and use that as well.

      I believe you're supposed to stop fertilizing during the winter and resume in the spring. I buy the gallon bottles of water that are no more than $1.35 each or cheaper. Usually one whole bottle will be sufficient for a medium to large hibiscus plant per week.

    Spider mites always used to get my mom and dad's.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому

      Scale, mealy bugs, and spider mites are the devils trifecta when it comes to pests. Scale is almost impenetrable, mealy bugs wont go away unless you get chemicals involved like rubbing alcohol, and Spider mites spread like the wind. If you don't catch them fast enough you could have an infestation in no time flat. Fortunately they are sometimes the easiest to remove. Simply spray them off out back with the garden hose or do it in your bathtub and the water generally knocks them off. If it is an infestation, you can rub the plant down with neem oil or rubbing alcohol on a wash cloth to knock off the stragglers.

    I just watched a few videos on hibiscus care and I am very confused as some of you guys say that the highest number on the fertiliser should be for phosphorus in order for hibiscus to bloom and of course you say it is potassium... what should I do? Please comment

    • @patriciam3079
      @patriciam3079 3 роки тому +1

      This is in a previous post: "Hibiscus enjoy high amounts of potassium, moderate amounts of nitrogen and low amounts of Phosphorus in their fertilizers. With water it's not uncommon for growers to water their plant up to two or three times in one day when temperatures are over 100. Look your plant over too. They could end up having an minor infestation that will stress em out and prevent flowering. If you monitor these steps your plant should flower, a lot."

      I would. I would remove any infected leaves and either burn them or throw them in a ziplock bag and then throw them in the trash. I wouldn't compost either, though many pathogens rarely survive this process. If the infested leaves touch others they could spread fairly easily, especially if its fungi, so be careful when pruning. After removing I would treat with a copper fungicide too. In the future don't get much water on the leaves or any place that had it.

The other option is a gallon of distilled a week but I feel like the larger volume of distilled water once a month might be better because it would penetrate deep down into the roots. • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому +1

      It really could be any number of reasons. The first would be that one of the two was not a healthy specimen. Sickly or stressed out plants are an all you can eat buffet for pests and diseases. Check your weaker plant out with a bright light. Look over and under every leaf, stem, flower and over the soil too. Do you see anything, any discoloration? If so you can use rubbing alcohol on a wash cloth or some neem oil and apply fairly liberally. Though be careful if you use neem oil, it does smell a little. The next reason would be how you are caring for them both. What are you feeding them and how often? How often do you water? How much light are they both getting? What size containers are they in? Where are you located? Let me know and I'll see what we are up against.

      Just depends on the size of the plant, smaller ones can go in a 6 inch pot for a year. The larger ones can be in a 10 inch pot for a couple of years. Of course larger pots can be ok too as long as they aren't considerably larger than the plant. At most you only want to jump two pot sizes from the current pot it was in when you bought it.

    Please watch your cat not getting onto the street and get hit by a car. You live on a very busy street. Thanks for the Video!

      Lol I used to live off of a super busy road. We tried to adjust the EQ to make it more tolerable and edit around it but it was almost impossible. I recently moved away from the city though so it should no longer be a problem!

      Perhaps it'd be worth buying a lavalier mic? The background noise made it difficult to watch.
