Thanks so much for your demo. I had heard of color harmony but this is the first time I actually saw it applied. It was fantastic to see you mix your colors, try your values, decide you wanted something different and then work it until you got what you wanted. It showed that painting takes thought and planning, and then adjusting your plan when you see that you’re not getting quite the result you want. It was also great to watch your work pay off when you finished. Quite a beautiful color study!
The lesson explains so well the lights and darks process’ application and also how to work with 2 complementary colors And not getting muddy colors😭, it is a class to watch over and over again! This was a master class. Thank you very much!
I love your choices of colors and combinations to create contrast and value! A Master Class! I live in Denver, grew up in El Paso, and enjoy the rich colors of sunset in New Mexico. Thank you! ❤️
So glad I discovered you. Your style is right up my alley as I live in Tucson. Absolutely appreciate your work & consideration towards those of us who wish to learn. BTW, those mountains look a lot like our Catalina Mountains!
Very informative and helpful. I am really enjoying your videos, from learning about other artists to process videos. As others have said, seeing your reference photo would be extremely valuable in seeing your choices, especially as regards to value. Keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you Phil. I enjoyed watching this video. I enjoyed also the extra comments about two sky holes is better than 50. Look forward to the next video.
So glad found this post. Another informative one. Thank you. BTW, think this plenty good for finished pic. Larger one might get too fussy but then you are the professional. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Phil! You've helped me break through barriers in my understanding that have been keeping me stuck for years. I'm curious... would you be able to upload the original picture you worked from here? Thanks for sharing your abilities with us!
Just loved it! As I have others. Can I assume you live out west? I live, now, in Farmington, NM and enjoy the San Juan Basin and the San Juan Mountains. Thanks again so much.
This is just a color study, not a finished painting. My videos are meant to be instructional, not gallery finished paintings. My gallery paintings are much larger and take longer to produce. With these color studies it allows me to get the instructional point across in a reasonable amount of time. Then you can take these principles and apply them to your own paintings. Thanks for watching!
I do soften some of the edges but not too much, I want a strong separation of the dark and the light. I usually use a flat synthetic brush to soften some fo the edges.
This is so incredibly beautiful! I am going to re-watch it so that I can absorb as much as possible. My only concern is that I don’t think it needed any more detail for such a small painting. The fence posts and the gate may have been too much. What do you think is the best way to decide how much detail to add to a painting, especially a small one? This is in no way a negative comment on your incredibly beautiful work!
Thanks, no offense taken. It is hard to know when to stop. I will usually finish the focal point first then as I move out I try to suggest instead of being too detailed.
I love watching your videos and explanations. One thing I struggle with in this one is that I have no reference to see how what you are doing is different from what you are seeing - or perhaps how you are accomplishing it. It is strange. I'm only 8 minutes in but have turned it off several times already and looked at the end of the video and then come back. Hmmm... I understand the point of the demo but no reference means I'm not seeing why you are doing what you are doing.
I love the way you paint the clouds and how you don't edit the video excessively and let us watch your painting strokes in real time.
Thanks Cynthia!

Phil, can you include your reference material at some point? This would make it easier to see the value choices. Thanks.
Thanks Brent, I've had several suggestions for that. I'll start attaching them.

I love how you explain everything, so many things to remember to do I will have to put a list next to my paintings
Thankyou
Thats a good idea, thanks
I also love to see paint strokes in real time. Is there any way you can post your reference, so we can see what you're interpreting as you go? Thanks!
Yes, doing better with that now
Great demo! 😊
thanks Bonnie!

Very helpful channel. Thanks.
Glad you think so!

I did live in Tucson, AZ but moved to Georgia recently. I do a lot of painting in New Mexico though
I'm a subscriber. Like your content. Great videos, but I don't know if you should post ones like this where the painting just didn't get there.

Thank you for the demo. Do you knock down the ridges of the thick paint before you finish the color study? If so, how?
I do soften some of the edges but not too much, I want a strong separation of the dark and the light. I usually use a flat synthetic brush to soften some fo the edges.

Great study. Are you using oils or acrylic?
Thanks, Oils
What medium are you using?
I don't use any medium, just paint thinner. I will use Liquin if I'm glazing or scumbling.
I get it but why didn’t this one work? How many studies will you make for a big painting?
I love watching your videos and explanations. One thing I struggle with in this one is that I have no reference to see how what you are doing is different from what you are seeing - or perhaps how you are accomplishing it. It is strange. Thanks Kathleen, That is a good point. I will look into adding the photo to the video
Painting did not seem to work. The orange tree appeared far too large and unfortunately , for me, dominated the scene.
Thanks!
Thank you!
