- “Wood does get better with age. Most certainly when it comes to resonance. The polymerization of resins over decades, once the wood is removed from the living tree, is one of the secrets to the superior tone of antique violins and guitars. This process turns sticky tree sap into sparklingly vibrant, crystal-like transmitters of sound." - Richard Hoover, founder of Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz puts this phenomenon to practical use in their 1934 D. This instrument is crafted from old-growth Mahogany which was harvested, air-dried, and stored in the 1920s. Here's Jesse to take a crack at it. Let us know what you think!

I was fortunate for my wife and myself to soend about 3 hours with Richard in his shop about 6-7 years ago. I always said he would build me a custom guitar someday !
I’m becoming addicted to watching these reviews fo some of the most fantastic acoustic instruments I have heard or seen. I had a friend who wanted to sell me his Santa Cruz Tony Rice model almost 30 years ago for $1600 and I wish I had bought it. Fantastic instruments.
Daaaaamn.
Here we go. Im gonna have to buy one.
Good lawd that thing sounds amazing.
One of the best guitars I've ever heard
I have owned a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model for 23 years and it is a great guitar. I have played Tony's 1935 Martin D-28 several times and I like my guitar better.
Never have played or owned a Santa Cruz guitar but wow this one sounds amazing
Just killer!
@@ArtisanGuitars, what mics did you use? They totally captured the tone of the VA.
Love your videos. Question - what strings are on it? Looking at trying the SC Parabolic strings on my OM.
I've played a couple Santa Cruz guitars. This one sounds good. If it's the same guitar Trey Hensley set in fire, it's good.
Whatever. It sounds great. The only issue I have is that it doesn't sound like a bango killer to me. I dont suspect that all Martin 1934 D's were. But I am as far from a Martin expert as you can possibly get, almost.
Tony purchased the guitar from the owner of Miller Liquors in California. He didn't purchase it from Clarence.
Not sure what it is. The bracing SC uses? The dimensions ? They just sound like they are "lacking" that "something" VS a HUss & Dalton TD-R or TD-M or a Collings D2H....sounding closere to a Martin...
i prefer usiing a flat pick on my Martin HD28 for more resonance and sustain. This Santa Cruz definitely has louder highs and lows than my Martin. Possibly because it has a larger soundhole.
Novices like this fella shouldnt test drive guitars like this.
Mahogany?
Sounds like my Epiphone.😂😂😂
When nobody's playing them.
Rigghhhhhhhhht - Dr. Evil
Dull.
