Great comparison. I like that he’s not just playing a bunch of fast bluegrass runs and instead allowing the audience to hear the nuance of attack, fundamental, overtone and decay.
On a slow piece like this, rosewood every time. The wider dynamic range and complex mix of reverb and overtones that rosewood gives you, really shines where the notes have space and time to breathe. It's also a much better rhythm guitar than mahogany, but I love mahogany for fast leads on fiddle tunes. That's where the simple, direct, projecting nature of mahogany is right at home.
This guy is a good player. He knows how to get tone out of a guitar. Best guitars being made right now but the key element is the musician. A mediocre player could make these guitars sound mediocre. Most people can't afford these guitars. Focus more on your playing and your guitar will sound MUCH better.
It's obvious they are both great and it is very hard to compare two guitars that are different volumes (the rosewood seems louder here to me). In addition, with both guitars being the same quality it is easy to say that one is not better than the other and the choice is ultimately person preference. I like the mahogany, it is sweeter, warmer and very fundamental; whereas, the rosewood has complexity but is slightly harsher. I'm new to acoustic guitars, so I wonder if the German spruce is the key?
You're right, it's a very tough "comparison" given the inherent differences of the tonewoods. Maybe we should have called this a side-by-side! German and other European spruces, which sit between Sitka and Adirondack on the stiffness scale, are generally known for having a great balance of dynamic range, as well as warmth and responsiveness, so you may be right!

Love videos comparing woods on high end acoustics. Getting a side by side with this level of guitar is special. Thank you
We're glad to hear you find them as helpful as we do!

Those are all great points! Thanks for sharing!
Great job. Brazilian (to my ear) has a dark and smokey tone. Both guitars are beautiful and sound as good as they look. Subscribed.
Gosh, that is a pile of money right there.... and worth every penny. Prob. the best acoustics in the world right here.
No way to go wrong on either!
You can certainly see why one is 10,000 more expensive. It is not only that Brazilian RW is rare. The sound speaks for itself.
Fascinating. Both superb!
Thanks, Paul!

Totalmente acertado
lovely playing, the mahogany version sounds better to me
Glad you enjoyed it!

Brazilian gets all the hype, but there’s something about the warmth and immediacy of Mahogany I keep going back to.
i got rosewood D half a year ago ( furch) its great, but i must admit it might be too much for the bigger body. yeah the gas is back.
We agree! Mahogany deserves more hype.
Agreed. I'm definitely a mahogany guy. Rosewood is a bit too complex for my simple ears.
