    BenQ SW Series Pre-Calibrated Build-In Color Mode Explained!
    BenQ SW displays line are pre-calibrated from the factory with various hardware color mode. One of the most common questions about this is, "can I use these display right out of the box without custom calibrating it?" The short answer to this question is "yes, you are able to," but the main question here is, should you? This video will explain what these color mode are, why they are there, how to use them etc. If you own a BenQ SW and have any questions about these color mode this video will explain everything that you need to know.

      @@ArtIsRight I'm confused on what you said about video card output. Isn't the video output of, say, DisplayPort, digital? I'm expecting this message to be ignored again rather than an acknowledgement of say, you don't know the answer or I've given you food for thought. Signals may definitely be different, but the 1s and 0s interpreted are the same, so shouldn't two different computers outputting Adobe RGB 1998 profiles show exactly the same image on the same monitor (connected separately) or, as the monitors are factory calibrated, the two different computers should display exactly the same image on two different factory calibrated displays (of the same model) using the same hardware colour mode?

    Hi Art! Thanks for all your answers!! After watch almost all your videos, I can conclude that after changing the Color Mode in the monitor (sw270c) YOU MUST change the ICC profile. Example: If I choose Adobe RGB in the monitor I must select Adobe RGB (1998) in my mac settings. If I choose Calibration 1 in the monitor, I need to select the corresponding ICC created with Palette Master Element. Color Mode in monitor must match with the icc profile? I'm right? Thanks!

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому +2

      Yes that is correct. Also when you are in Adobe RGB and choose Adobe RGB, the color are approximate only because your computer output is not at reference. The best thing to do is use the profile from PME and custom PME calibration

    Hi Art, I am so thankful for your work and your channel! Its so awesome. Everything about BenQ monitors can be found on your channel! Great! Thx a lot.
    I wrote you an email a week ago or so. Thx for your help there! It was about the sw2700pt and old FW on the new M1 Macs.
    I thought about using the inbuilt adobeRGB calibration + adobe RGB output as a workaround until pallets master works fine on M1's. From my first tests its looks as the best solution for the moment? Do you have any thoughts about it?
    I am really happy with my monitor now, as I watched so many videos from you. But I really think if BenQ is the future way to go, with all there bugs and problems in the pallets master software, it is really a mess. And if you wouldn't do all that great videos I had already sold that monitor.

    Currently, we would set the monitor to the color mode we're working on (ie: Adobe RGB) and anything of smaller gamut like sRGB would be handled by the application (ie: Most Adobe apps). And not change it on the operating system.
    Would you have to change both the color mode on the monitor and operating system when working on specific color modes every single time (If you don't choose to calibrate)? Would that also apply if you choose to hardware calibrate?
    In many cases we use different MacBook Pros and Windows based laptop to connect to a monitor, it seems that hardware calibrating the monitor would not benefit since we use different machines, is that correct?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому +1

      @Harold Urquiola, as mentioned in the video these color mode are really for approximating what color will look like in a respective gamut. It does not matter what or how many machine you use, the best recommendation to get the best color possible is still to run a custom hardware calibration with PME. Your BenQ display should have at least 2 if not 3 hardware calibration slots, so you can assign a slot for Mac, a slot of PC, etc. And yes all of them would have to use the respective icc profile that was generate from PME after the calibration on each respective matching for the best result.
      To answer another part of your question, you can use the color mode like in Method 1 without matching the profile. Method 2 is not really recommend. And what you really need to do is a custom hardware calibration and then make sure that the proper icc profile is used every time. Watch my calibration guide here ua-cam.com/video/bz9y3db9vRI/v-deo.html

    Thanks Art for all your hard work at putting these together. Finally pulled the trigger on SW271c based on your videos. Question on gamut from iMac to monitor. Based on all the reading and watching your videos, I "think" after you colour calibrate the monitor, and you choose the newly created ICC profile created from PME (SW271C D65 Adobe RGB), AND you use the Calibration 1 monitor setting, you are getting the most accurate colour profile available. With that combination, you cannot adjust brightness. If I keep the ICC profile (SW271C D65 Adobe RGB) selected, and then use the monitor Colour Mode Adobe RGB, is this still considered better than the out of the box factory ICC calibration? There is a noticeable difference in saturation going between the two. With the monitor Colour Mode Adobe RGB, you can change the brightness which is needed for my work location.

      -Yes and no, that Adobe RGB color mode is technically for reference only. And it is not as precise as the custom calibration. If you need to calibrate different brightness just run the calibration in another slot. Watch this video for further explanation ua-cam.com/video/Cgo2p7jF3n0/v-deo.html

      - Watch the video linked here and calibrate to luminance. There's no need to change ICC when you do this, hence what I've gone over in the video

    Hello! First of all thank you for such a well explained video! I had a question, I'm using a Benq SW240 monitor display. It doesn't have a m-book mode and my monitor display is different from my mac book even though both are in sRGB mode. I wanted to calibrate as such that both the displays are same and I can share the images with my clients who probably use sRGB colour mode. I'm not talking from a print perspective. Help me out! Thanks again!

      Watch this ua-cam.com/video/NxTNSkxgVP8/v-deo.html and then this ua-cam.com/video/QmyDEHNB1pQ/v-deo.html
      In short it can't be done, even with Apple own displays.
      M-Book does help but not as much. And calibration should not be done for the sake of matching, because it will never work that way.
      MacBook Display are technically all P3, unless you have the Liquid Retina XDR inside the 14 and 16" MBP, those can be set to sRGB. But then again the LCD panel and back light is different.
      The other thing is that clients even though they are in sRGB, if you don't calibrate, they'll see something different. If they use a cheap monitor even in sRGB, it will show up different. It is a can of worms that you don't want to open. Best that you can do is get things looking right on your end.
      If you think most of your clients are Mac then just edit on the Mac for color, not what I recommend but you can do that. Personally what I would do is a hardware calibration on the BenQ SW240 edit to that and let the images fall where it may on other displays.

    Another brilliant video. However, at 11:18 - it's stated that M-Book Mode will sllow you to see what users of Mac products will see on their end. Is this under straight out of the box settings only? What happens to that mode once custom calibration takes place? Does the mode get affected/ changed after custom calibration is done? If it does get changed, should it still be called M-Book Mode because it will no longer be what Mac users are seeing?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому

      @3-Piece, thank you. So about that when you custom calibrate your BenQ SW displays then you'll be using either calibration 1, 2 or 3 and the rest are unaffected so the color mode would remain the same. In the event that you should do a software calibration in m-book color mode then that color will change based on the icc profile output from the system. For the color modes that comes with the display, nothing will change on the display hardware side even with hardware calibration. The only thing that will cause this to change is software calibration. Hope this helps!

      So there are a few SW in 27" size, model specific please. Also when you say that you can't find the Adobe RGB in the software do you mean PME? And if so, the only option that you have in Panel Native, does this sound about right? If so, you have a SW2700PT with one of the firmware version that can only do Panel Native RGB primary, which is like a slightly larger Adobe RGB, nothing wrong with the display.

    Hi Art, Thanks for your great videos and really helpful responses. I am coming up to speed using my SW270c. I feel this may be a really stupid question and perhaps so stupid it is the reason why I cant find the answer anywhere but am I correct in assuming that when I am grading a photo or a video for UA-cam I need to use the Rec 709 Color Mode on the monitor and any adjustments I make in my software (Photoshop or Premiere Pro) to lift the levels, saturation, contrast to make the image better etc (like how it appears in RGB mode) will be close to what would be represented on UA-cam when it is published. I am finding that the end result is not that close. Note that I am yet to get delivery of my Calibrator and know (from this great video) that I do need to calibrate my Monitor to my PC and also adjust the PC settings to match the monito setting.

      REC 709 would be a good color mode to use for what you are doing. This said, because you have not custom calibrated the display yet, this may be the reason why the colors are off. If you can tell me what is not correct about them and how you are proofing, I would have a better idea.

    I intend to do a custom profile of my MacBook Pro M1 and of the new BenQ SW270C with X-Rite i1 Studio. Previously, always had separate MBP and iMac, profiled each separately, each automatically selected their own profile, never connected.
    Now, do I first profile MBP, then connect to monitor and do another profile? If so, how does the monitor profile get selected (vs the MBP internal profile) when I connect the MBP to the monitor? When using the Benq as a reference monitor through Davinci and Desktop Video Setup with an Ultrastudio Mini Monitor, I am unable to run the Palette Master software. For reasons I am still trying to understand, I am having difficulty running DisplayCal in coordination with Davinci on the Benq. This means that I am only able to run PME with a simple HDMI feed directly from the computer, not through the Ultrastudio. Wouldn't this mean that my custom calibration created in PME (using a simple HDMI which compensates for my computer's GPU) will be MORE accurate without the clean reference feed from Davinci using an Ultrastudio? Very confused by this! Thank you!

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 роки тому

      I am unable to comment on Display Cal. But for this scenario you would have to calibrate the display with PME to the setting and gamma that you want with PME without the Mini Monitor and then once the calibration is done, add that back in and use it with the hardware calibration that you just done

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 роки тому

      Not necessary for this scenario. In this case you are pairing the hardware of the display to the output of the computer based on your specific parameter (PME setting). Adding the mini link in afterwards will just neutralize the signal coming from the computer in a way but still respect the calibration parameter that you defined during hardware calibration. Factory preset mode does not allow for this.

With regards to the color setting on your system the best thing to do is use the calibrate profile. So it to the icc profile that you either generate it through PME or i1Profiler.

    The sRGB IEC61966-2.1 is present but I do not see Adobe RGB 1998 is not in the list of my icc profiles in the Associate Color Profile.
    Have been unable to download it from Adobe even when signed in to my Adobe account. I do have the current subscription to Photoshop/Lightroom/Bridge cc 2021. How do I download Adobe RGB 1998 to my Windows 10. Using the BenQ puck RGB setting, I did successfully execute a 1.3.8 version calibration with your very helpful video on it.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому

      For some reasons Adobe no longer distribute that. Either way when you are using the preset mode it is still not the best idea to match the preset mode with the reference profile, remember your computer does not output reference color. So the best thing is choose the color mode and then run a software calibration to get a custom profile for each of the specific color mode that you want to use. Personally, I would not recommend do this or even what you have described, I would just calibrate with PME and call it the day. If you want to see what your image would look like in another color space I would just do soft proofing, faster because you don't have to change the preset color mode and then the icc profile and then quit and restart all of your color aware application so that it takes on the changed icc profile. The story is as follows, all displays are pre-calibrated from the factory. It is just how rigorous that calibration is. Pro display spends a lot of time in the calibration phase of manufacturing compared to non pro ones. The other thing too is that gamut coverage does not equate to accuracy within that gamut. And also the advantage of Pro displays is that usually they would get the top yield panel in them compared to more other ordinary displays.

Can they be used in that scenario yes. But you will need to either get a Blackmagic deckling or something along that line that go between the display and computer for it to be treated that way. Once you run and have a successful calibration(following your advice my calibration settings: RGB Primary Panel Native, D 65 White Point, 100 luminance, 2.2 gamma, Relative Black Point, and Profile Type Matrix, passing validation with excellent Delta E average 0.73, Maximum 1.39 and 6515K Achieved Temp.), do you do all editing with Benq SW270C(Lightroom Classic) in the calibration 1 slot or since the Benq is now calibrated do the preset Adobe, SRGB modes now incorporate the hardware settings so that you can edit in the specific color mode you need for your work flow. As a beginner what might be simple to understand is hard for us to get our heads around. Thanks.....

      The best thing to do is calibrate and leave your display in Panel Native, not need to calibrate or proof color in other spaces. CMM will take care of everything. This video will explain why ua-cam.com/video/Yvu-sgddna0/v-deo.html

      @@ArtIsRight Art thank you for your reply. I did study video you left link for but still cant get my head around it. My calibration lies in the Calibration 1(Panel Native). When you say CMM will take care of everything do you mean once I should chose Adobe CMM when editing with preference for Adobe it will take of everything , DCI P3 when preference for DCI Pe , SRGB, etc. or do i edit leaving BenQ in Calibration 1 mode. Can't quite visualize it. Thanks..

    • @ArtIsRight

      So CMM runs in real time, you don’t have to do anything. All Adobe Programs use Adobe Color Engine (ACE for short) this is Adobe’s version of CMM and with this you don’t have to set anything. So essentially what this means is that even if your display is calibrated to Panel Native (PN), if you load in an image that is tagged with sRGB into PS for instance, what you will see on your display color wise would be sRGB, no display Panel Native. This happens because ACE is loading in the sRGB color gamut tagged from the image, it is using the display PN profile to render the preview and while it is doing that it is doing a gamut translation from Panel Native to sRGB and it is displaying sRGB this way you see the correct color at any point of your edit. What I am saying here is that if your image is tagged with sRGB it will looks the same when you view it in Panel Native Calibration or sRGB Calibration. And to further answer your question, the build in preset color modes will not at any point incorporate your current calibration. This is the reason why you choose an RGB primary in PME when calibrating and the slot for the Calibration to go into. This is the way how you incorporate color gamut chosen with your current calibration setting. Hope this helps, feel free to follow up. And with this in mind, it is the reason why sticking with 1 color space that is the largest works in every one benefit. :)

    Thanks for all the videos Art. I've watched several, and they have been very helpful. However, I have a fundamental question that I've not seen answered anywhere; can you help? I have calibrated my BenQ SW270C on a MacBook pro using PME and a SpyderX Pro (Panel Native, D65, L120, large etc). This successfully made a color profile that was automatically installed and selected on the BenQ. HOWEVER, it is also installed on the mac, made selectable as a display profile in Display Profile, and auto-selected. That is, the new profile is selected on BOTH the monitor and the mac, and looks TERRIBLE; very washed out and undersaturated. It seems to me that what I SHOULD be doing is to select the newly created calibration profile on the monitor, but just the standard BenQ SW270C profile on the mac. This is also in accord with what BenQ technical support told me: "Please use the calibration profile saved on the monitor only as its a hardware calibrated profile. It would give better colour viewing experience.". Is this what you advise? It certainly produces a much better saturated result.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому

      That is not the correct advice. About what you are seeing have you turned off HDR in display preferences for the SW270C already? It is not supposed to look wash out. The generic profile that the OS created is not the correct one to be using on a hardware calibrated display.

    • @paulcally739

      @@ArtIsRight HDR is turned off. I have done this calibration several times, with slightly different calibration setting, and alway the same unsaturated result.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому

      Unsaturated relative to what display? If you are talking about the MacBook Pro then that is a not a good comparison to make. Glossy / reflective display will have higher contrast and more saturation that is the nature of it. Matted display like all of the SW and most of the other matted display out there will have duller color when compared to those glass cover glossy display. Color that are edited to look good with nice saturation on the SW will look even better on the glossy display. The default profile that macOS generate gives you more saturation because the gamut in the profile vs the gamut used in the display is mismatch. I would trust the profile that PME generated and use that with the calibration slot.

    I have an SW 271, and for the life of me I can't get the Mbook color mode to work (I got the monitor in May 2021). If I follow the video at 11:05 I get 3 different levels of B&W. The levels of Color Mode I have are Adobe 1998, sRGB, B&W, Rec. 709, etc. B+W is the only one that has three options in the next window to the right. Many wide gamut displays offer optional preset color space modes, but with these displays they are usually emulated. I thought if a wide gamut display can be hardware calibrated like the Benq, that would make each color mode native to the monitor, but I'm not certain.

      It is native, if you run a calibration in said color mode the profile coordinates and shape would matches that of the color mode that you set it to. i.e. sRGB would come out as sRGB, and it is native.

    Now that I got the BenQ monitor calibrated to Adobe1998, as well as my 4-yr old NEC EA275UHD monitor, there is a clear difference in the whites (they are sided by side, and set to Extended Displays in Windows 10). I then calibrated the older NEC monitor using their SpectraView II and Spyder 5, and got a resulting ICC profile. Again, the BenQ is considerably bluer than the NEC.
    So I tried your directions, and set the BenQ to use the NEC's ICC profile as its default...and nothing happened with the BenQ. At all. I have checked and checked, and BenQ's default is the same as the NEC's, but they are glaringly different. How is this even possible with the same (nVidia) video card?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 роки тому

      Different LED panel, different black light technology, different manufacture. Yes this is highly possible. The NEC that you have is software calibration only even when you run SpectraView II it is doing software calibration only. The panel can only show 78.1% Adobe RGB. Now what you didn't tell me is which BenQ Display model you got. If it is the SW or PD I would trust that more than the NEC that you have. This is a situation where this new display does not match up with what you are used to (which could be based on a non suitable reference), it does not mean that the new display is showing the colors incorrectly, it just means that you to adjust to the new more accurate way.

      @@ArtIsRight Thank you so much for your answer. The BenQ is an SW271. It never occurred to me that the BenQ is less accurate: I would assume that since the NEC is four years older that the BenQ is more accurate. The colors don't look that far off from each other, but the white does. Is there a tutorial for adjusting the white point for PC and adjusting other colors by eye that you know of? I'm an artist and quite familiar with Photoshop and RAW, so my eye is fairly well-trained.

      On the NEC, what white point did you use for calibration? I would try calibrating D65 or even 7000K to match that of the BenQ. The variation in LCD panel and back light is the cause of the issue. Alternatively, you can calibrate your BenQ at a temp lower than D65 like 6000K. but I would rather do the adjustment on the NEC than on the BenQ. Give this a try and let me know how it goes.

      I went to the manual controls for the NEC's white point and got a very close match. The white point for the Black Body ended up being 2500K (!); the Red was 205, Green 224, and Blue 255.
      When I tried to save this I got the warning from NEC's SpectraView: "The white point coordinates entered are outside the normal range of values and may cause the calibration to fail. Are you sure you want to use these values?" I clicked Yes, and sure enough, the calibration failed. I can send you a screenshot, but I don't know how to do that with UA-cam.

      Also, I tried BenQ's Palette Master again, and got the error message: "A connection to a BenQ display cannot be established. Please make sure the the USB cable is connected and that the FTDI drivers are working," and it looks like I should have received some sort of controller with the monitor. Perhaps I'm losing my mind. Should there have been some sort of device that came with the BenQ SW271 monitor that did not, and is that the source of all these problems?

      - 2 different concepts all together. Changes that you made will reflect in the export. As far as how accurate the changes in luminance and colors goes without profiling, can be ok or questionable.
      So I have to change windows display setting in order to get the Adobe RGB changes in my capture one editor to get them in the file for export to print.
      Not necessary. You can change the Windows profile setting but then the question is to what? If you don't profile this does not make a lot of sense to change this and I would not touch it.
      If you have the SW240 I would calibration the Palette Master Element, you can find the walk through on my channel from there the program would setup the windows settings fro you automatically.
