    You have the most clear, well/explained tutorials and the most explanatory videos I have seen on the field. Just by watching few videos of yours it already cleared my mind from questions I've been carrying for quite some time on printing workflow, monitor calibration and monitor/paper calibrators. I also think I am now understanding the potential of my BenQ monitor. Thank you for sharing your expertise in such a nice, straightforward way.
    I am spreading the word about your channel.

    Big thanks for making this video and including links to the previous versions of Palette Master.. I just installed the default program on a windows 10 machine with an i1 Display Pro, and then immediately "upgraded" at the prompt to version 1.3.12. That was a major mistake... All I got when trying to calibrate was windows 10 crashes with a white screen, and I could not recover the system without a hard reboot. This continued till I found your link and installed 1.3.11.. Now life is good!

I am connecting my 2015 macbook air to my benq sw270c with a displayport cable. I also connected the usb cable for hardware calibration. After calibration, can I only use the displayport cable and leave the usb cable disconnected if I'm not use the monitor's SD card reader or usb inputs? Is there any benefit to leaving the usb cable connected after calibration other than gaining access to the monitor's SD card reader and usb input? Thank you!!

    Hi Art!
    Thanks a lot for all the great videos, which I have been consuming voraciously since I got my SW 270C 2 weeks ago. I just got a SpyderX Elite 2 days ago and did my first ever hardware calibration using your older video on this topic. Everything went great and I am very happy with the results.
    Question is this - Can I create a Custom Color Mode using my hardware calibration results, which will then allow me to adjust the brightness of the monitor, to account for the ambient light at different times of the day. Because of course the Calibration slots do not allow for brightness adjustments.
    If yes, how do I create the Custom settings?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 роки тому +1

      That is not possible, and when it comes to display the brightness of it should not change with the environment throughout the day, otherwise you are editing your work to a moving target. It is not advised at all. This is one of those feature that color engineers come up with to sell a product but have less practical use in real life. The issues is that many of these color engineers are great at what they do but they are not photographers per say, so these disconnect do happen.

    • @stephanmaxreinhold3639

      @@ArtIsRight Right. I understand. I try to keep my photo editing very consistent, including ambient light.
      But if I am outside Photoshop, for instance, sometimes web pages are simply too bright. And I would like to be able to adjust my brightness in those situations.
      Is it not possible to take the info from the calibration report and use that to create an accurate Custom Color profile to use outside of Photoshop, one where I can control the brightness?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 роки тому

      How bright are you calibrating your display to? I mean what you can do is switch to another color mode, i.e. Adobe RGB and then you can control the brightness that way, here's a hack how to set the luminance on those color modes ua-cam.com/video/TE5zsrOAH6M/v-deo.html And if anything you can just create another custom calibration for Web with a darker luminance setting.

      1) Do i have to calibrate monitor separately for website, general use or others used not for print?
      - You can but that gets complicated. No need to. I don't and have not done that at all in my over 2 decades doing this...
      (2) or Can I use same I calibrated monitor for especially Print in website or general use?
      - I recommend this, keep it simple!
      (3) Do I need change any settings in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop and Normally Lightroom and photoshop comes with Adobe RGB or Prophoto? If yes the how?
      LR and LRC it is what it is, the app manages it all. PS yes there is a way to change this. I should make a video on this but have not yet. The beginning of this video will show you 1 method that you can use ua-cam.com/video/Gu1nqEf8vzg/v-deo.html
      (4) in Calibrate monitor my all raw photos look flat or very less contrast and less saturated? Do you have any Ideas?
      - You are seeing honestly what your images look like and it is is telling you that you need to push your editing further.
      Do I separately calibrate Monitor for Print, website, social media, client delivery and other general use???
      - like stated above... no
      What is best Luminance value for website or general used if like calibrate monitor???
      - Shoot for print value which can varies between 80-120 nits based on environment and taste.
      My picture looks less contrast and saturate means for me lifeless picture.
      - it is not lifeless. You rather have it be lifeless now then the display not telling you what your image actually looks like and have it be lifeless else where. Push hard on editing make if lively here and it will be lively else where.

    This is my first time calibrating a monitor and i followed your guide exactly to calibrating my SW320.
    As this is my first time i just wanted to ask, post calibration is the monitor suppose to look less bright and vibrant? (i used luminance value 80).
    I did this as i want to use this profile to best match what i get on screen to paper print, and to my knowledge the luminance value is suppose to be low as paper is quite dull and not vibrant?
    The screen however now does not look as attractive as if i had left it on adobe RGB color profile. This is normal right?

    Hi Art! Thanks so much for all the tutorials. I have the Spyder5Pro and BenQ SW2700PT monitor that I use with the new Mac Studio M1 Max and have been running some calibrations. I've managed to get the colors very close to perfect but I can't seem to get the black levels as good as the default Adobe RGB colour profile. With the default Adobe RGB profile the colours are not as perfect but in this mode I can make out the difference of black levels all the way to 0 and 1(I have the brightness set to 20). When calibrated though (using 0.5 blackpoint, also tried 0.3) I can only make out the difference between 4 and 5. 1 to 3 are all black. I also tried calibrating with 0.8 but that didn't help. Any advice on how I could achieve the desired black levels? And another question should one be able to make out the difference in the highlights all the way to 255? I can only differentiate 233 but not further. I'm using Palette Master V1.3.17 and my monitor MFG is Jan 2018. Calibrating settings: D65, Panel Native, 2.2. Thank you!

      That a side effect of the Spyder 5, black tones does not scale well. 0.8 would be a step in the right direction but that it may not be for the specific device. As far as white point, ideally you should be able to discern 250 and higher, so 233 is rather low. Remember that Spyder 5 is an older device with inferior sensor. I would consider upgrading to Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro.

      I do demo on PC as well but not as much, the process is the same really and this video also shows a demo on PC as well. Either way use Palette Master Element with SW240 Go to this link to download the latest version www.benq.com/en-us/support/downloads-faq/products/monitor/palette-master-element/software-driver.html Laptop and desktop cables are the same. On your PC depending on what display output you have I might try HDMI first and see if you can get it to pass calibration if yes then good, if not then choose to use display port (DP), you might have to buy a full size DP to DP. Eitherway, desktop or laptop, it does not matter. For the calibrator if you have one keep it, if you don't get Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro or ColorChecker Display Plus these are great devices. And you can just plug those in the the regular USB. And the ports on the Mac and PC are technically the same and as well as Laptop vs Desktop, no need for distinction really, some minor variation but that is a given. You don't have to be on a Mac to get this done. Or call BenQ, they will tell you what I told you.

There are multiple colormodes e.g. Adobe RGB, sRGB and red.709; In what color mode should I put the monitor if I want to switch between sRGB and red.709? Hardware calibration (HWC) = fixed brightness for best and optimal outcome. if they allowed you to change the brightness, technically you would need to accompany that with a different icc profile and calibration since at every luminance point the specific colors being measured would change in output.
      You can't change HWC brightness, what you can do is calibrate 1 slot to a brightness value and use the other slot to set a difference luminance value. Outlined here ua-cam.com/video/Cgo2p7jF3n0/v-deo.html

    I have a Benq sw 270C monitor, I calibrate it with an X-rite display pro. Most of the time I work on the web, so I set srgb as my primary setting. What I do with the calibration: srgb, 6500k, luminance: 140, Black point: 0.3. profile v2, 16bit lut path size large. And the result is a darker screen, white rather than white is more gray. The colors are perfect anyway. In this case, should the color management in the windows remain the calibrated icc profile and the monitor on calibration 1? or switch to factory default setting on the monitor? (what if you went to calibration 2 in an adobe rgb mode, do i always have to change the windows color management icc?)

For button 2, I'd like to have a setting that allows me to preview what my images will look like to other people when viewing on the web, and for general office work. I bypass my graphics card using a video interface to feed a clean signal directly into my reference monitor for color grading, and I'm worried that the palette master software calibration program will be skewed by its test signals being processed through the computer's graphics card, if that is indeed what's happening. For this what you should is run a hardware calibration with PME using REC 709 with the brightness and gamma setting that you want without the video interface box. Once you are done with the calibration then put the video interface in.

    Hi Art,
    I have followed all the required steps to calibrate my SW270C and so far everything’s great.
    I do have one question though.
    I work primarily with work to be consumed on the web and I mix between photography and video. So, I need both srgb and rec 709. What do you recommend in my situation?
    Do I hardware calibrate for Native Panel to get the widest gamut and select srgb and rec 709 respectively on my monitor as I need it?
    O do I do a separate hardware calibration for each use i.e. calibrate using Srgb gamma 2.2 in custom calibration 1 and Rec709 gamma 2.4 in custom calibration 2 and have separate icc profiles for both uses?
    I am running a Macbook pro 2015 using a Usb-c to the display.
    Hope you see this. And thank you in advance.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому

      Do you grade with Resolve? If yes then REC 709, Gamma 2.4, D65, Relative Black. If not then a single calibration with sRGB would be fine. Unless you want a custom gamma of 2.4, to be honest a gamma of 2.2 vs 2.4 is really a slight different visually. And if you want to get the most out of the display and all of your programs are color aware, I would just calibrate your display to Panel Native.
      Panel Native on BenQ SW is a slightly larger Adobe RGB. Since this color space is larger than sRGB and REC 709, if you are using a color aware program, Color Management Module, CMM, will do all of the color translation in the background in realtime for you. So at any given point if you are viewing an image tagged with sRGB on a Panel Native calibration, you will be setting a translated sRGB image as it should look not Panel Native. This is the same for video as well, which is why it is not really necessary to calibrate the smaller color space. The exception of course being Resolved.
      You can have 2 calibration with 2 separate icc profile, but I would just defer you to the paragraph above about cmm.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi Art, your videos have got me a long way, but with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro, Palette Master 3.10, and SW2700PT, I still haven't got a passing validation. The average Delta E does pass, but one or two shades of gray register at about 4.69 or so. I've tried both the Panel Native, 16-bit Lut, relative black (all the other settings as recommended and Kelvin always does test close to 6500), and also the safe settings: Abobe RGB, matrix, relative black. I'm using an Asus Vivobook 15 with AMD graphics, which by what I've read, doesn't have the 160-235 limitation. Am using an HDMI cable, since the laptop has no USB-C with display signal. Did try absolute black at least once. Do you have any idea what might be the problem? I did upload the drivers form BenQ. Thanks.

    1) I've just bought the SW721 - and I'm learning to optimise the coolers. My primary monitor before this is an Eizo CG234W. The calibration software for this monitor is no longer updated for OS - therefore I'm calibrating this monitor with the standard Datacolor software and the SpyderX. And now - the question: Can I keep the Datacolor software on my computer for calibrating the Eizo - and still do a correct and independant calibration of the SW721 using the Palette Master Element software? Or will the Datacolor Software disrupt the PME calibration?
    2) In one of your videos you mentioned an issue about an unwanted orange toning on the BenQ-screens after calibrating - and how to work around this. I've not been able to find this video. Could you please send me the link for the video presenting the solution on this issue?

    Hi. First of all, thank you for your videos - really helpful to set up my new SW270C, I'm interested in the reasons for using a luminance of 80 here, as you previously used 120. When I set up my old NEC Multisync with IProfiler, I used 80. As I recall, I read an article that said if you are working in a dimly lit room (which I am) , you should use 80 rather than 120, is that the case?
    I did run Pallette Master using the best settings and a luminance of 120, and I got a validation where the highest delta E was 1.1 I think. Just interested to know what your opinion on luminance values was. Thanks again.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому

      In most of my videos, I recommend a luminance range between 80-120. My personal number is 80 nits all the time for my own calibration. 120 was used for demo purposes only. Regardless of the lighting in the room I always calibrate mine to 80 nits. But this range works well for all type of work which is why I recommend it. 80 is too dim for some while 120 is still too bright for others. Your ∆E value is great! Have fun editing.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому

      That is a good test chart but what the lab is asking anyone to do with the chart on the display is somewhat arbitrary. The white that you may not see in the first few spots is not necessary a brightness issues, it can be but 9 times out of 10 it is not. It has more to do with gamma and contrast set on the display. Gamma is a function of the calibrate and yes the default at 2.2 is the best for photography work. I would not use the chart to determined brightness of the display. So like I said before I set my display to 80 nits and it has been matching prints just fine. This brightness value is not absolute either, it would mostly depend on the printing that you do, choosing a value based on others may not produce the best result with your work. This is the fine tuned part.

    • @peterpage597
      @peterpage597 4 роки тому

      I've tried different luminance values and I've found that setting a higher value misleads the eye and results in prints that are too dark. For the same reason, I generally work on a light background in Photoshop as a darker value makes the image look brighter and again results in prints that are too dark.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому

      Perception can change the way how an image look. Additionally, if you calibrate it brighter, it does play with your eyes but more so what you are seeing on the display at higher luminance value is just simply brighter than a printed image.

    As far as I understand, over time displays develop some shift in colors, and regular recalibration ensures we correct for these shifts. But if the calibration is saved into "Calibration 1", that means that the factory sRGB mode stays uncorrected, and over time it becomes more and more incorrect?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 роки тому +2

      This video will help explain why ua-cam.com/video/Ipuaf5yHrog/v-deo.html but TLDR version of it is that if you custom calibration then that won't be an issue, since the calibration would accommodate for the shift over time. These newer LED backlight, don't shift very much if at all, so you should be good for quite sometime. The preset color mode are lock once the display left the factory there's no adjusting them. Which is why there are 3 calibration slots on your displays, these are writable LUT slots so that PME can write the setting to the display, this is regardless of the RGB Primary that you choose during calibration. And since you custom calibration those preset modes are of no consequences to you.
      Now moving to Windows 10, it does not color manage at the OS Level, and yes you do choose a profile but that profile is really not for the OS, but more so for the programs that uses color management so that they know which profile to use. Because of this, when changing profile you might not see a difference at all. In addition PME generated profile only contained color gamut info and no color remapping which also reemphasize why there are no color changes when you change profile. Hope this helps

    Thanks very much for your video, just calibrated for the first time and it all worked and was validated ok. A couple of questions though.
    x-rite i1Display Pro / SW270C / WindowsPC / Panel Native setting / switched off all monitor auto light settings before calibrating.
    1. The target temperature was 6500K yet the achieved temperature is 7221K (same result when I tried again) that's quite a large difference, will it make a significant difference to the viewed colours?
    2. Once calibrated to "calibration1" slot, do the other color modes I then select (sRGB, AdobeRGB, DisplayP3) take their instructions from the new calibration settings which were saved to the "calibration1" slot?
    Because after calibration, if I select the "calibration1" color mode, the colors are way too saturated overall to use as a reference for color-grading, they are completely over the top (especially the reds) But if I select the sRGB or DisplayP3 for instance, they look correct - more like as seen on all my other displays/phones/tablets. (And those three color modes/spaces now look slightly different after the calibration than what they did with the factory settings, although interestingly the sRGB selection looks different each time compared to if I calibrate specifically for sRGB rather than Panel Native)

      It does not work because i1Display Studio is X-Rite entry calibration device and even-though it look similar to the pro one, i1Display Studio is software lock to i1Studio software only and X-Rite does not provide 3rd party developers with a Software Development Kit (SDK) for that specific device. Hello Art, Just had a query .. I was planning to go for SW2700PT.. Alongside we are also planning to buy a central server with graphics card to manage our data for our entire office. The server company when asked, said there is no need for graphics card on individual PCs if there is one installed on the central as the server will handle the computing load.. But my question is whether the absence or presence of graphics card in the PC that this monitor is connected to will influence the colors on monitor.. We are into print design and accurate colors are the most important, the very reason for going with Benq Monitor.. Can you advise me on whether I should have the graphics card installed on my system , the individual PC or its ok if I have one on the central server.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому

      If you have individual PC, those PC would contain a GPU of some sort no doubt. If you do print design, I am not sure why having a server with a strong GPU will help you. It does not make sense, I deploy and consult for pro setup and that is not something that I would advise. The only time where that make sense is that your server is a rendering farm and is constantly working footage. If that is not the case then putting the good GPU in the server is not useful. For the individual PC you can run on the integrated GPU and get decent result but if it is an intel integrated GPU then you are only going to be getting 8 bit color output. To get 10 bit you need a dedicated GPU such as the Nvidia and you have to use their studio driver. If you can tell me more what your server does this would help. From what you are telling me and what you described you do, it seems that the primary function of your server is for file storage, to which I would forego the video card on that system and install them in the work station. If you like to consult further with me, you may. You can reach out to me on Facebook or instagram as well as email.

    • @manishjain9728
      @manishjain9728 3 роки тому

      @@ArtIsRight Thanks a lot. Yes, the Primary function of the server is the file storage and management. But they suggested that all the stations can connect remotely from that server i.e say 4 pcs connected to server and thus using the server resources, the PC would just be acting as a User Interface. Would this affect the color on the display. This was scenario 1 however. The Scenario 2 would be just buying a NAS ( Network Access Storage) and then buying 4 high end workstations with GPU alongside other high end components. Which one would you suggest ?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 роки тому

      So this sounds like you are using remote session on the server to pool the resources, the thing is that the individual thin machine as I'll call your work station setup still needs to be individually calibrated. The question is are you using Windows Server and doing a remote session in using Remote Desktop or remote login and running the software on the server or just the local machine. Either way you still need to calibrate the local display on each thin machine individually, the how depends on the setup. I think the company that you are working with is, like many company are great at computer, but does not understand the need of creative. Personally I would recommend a NAS, if you do video you want more power on each machine, server will quickly choke with video rendering and slow down the entire team. With a NAS I would use a 10 Gbe networking on both Nas and user machine and get a more powerful work station. What type of creative work does your company do? I can answer your questions better understanding this.

I'm getting ready to connect SW240 up to my Win 7 PC via second DVI port and will connect X-Rite to a PC USB port, not the monitor, after I run the 3.3.0 setup file. A couple more queries on the correct order to do things if I may:
    1. Do I have to connect the USB cable to the monitor if I have an external card reader and don't want / need to use the monitor USB port
    s
    2. Should I run the X-Rite 3.3.0 setup file as first step then connect i1 Display Pro to my PC USB
    . I will also be reconnecting my existing monitor (Hanns-G) to it's original (1st DVI) port after SW240 is calibrated
    3. Do I need to load anything from the SW240 supplied DVD, like drivers etc & when do I run this
    4. Should I run PME 1.3.10 setup first, then connect the monitor (2nd DVI port) & power it up
    5. Can I keep the existing factory set colour calibration (in case I need to fall back on it for some reason) and run PME / i1 Display Pro on a different calibration port setting, say 2
    6. At 18:42; mention of initial pre-calibration of colormonki, my i1 Display Pro is brand new, does it need to be pre-calibrated before I continue with PME
    .
    I hope it's not too much to ask but I know things can go wrong when they are out of sequence.

      Give this video a look too it will help avoid issues ua-cam.com/video/PDoDwMIFpeM/v-deo.html
      1. Yes you still need the USB for hardware calibration, it will not work otherwise.
      2. Probably a good idea to install the software first. But if you want to start fresh with BenQ, then I would just install PME, plug in the device and calibrate. You have leave both display plugged in, but unplugging the other non BenQ is a sure way to guarantee non conflicts.
      3. No you just need PME>
      4. The sequence does not matter in this situation.
      5. Factory color mode will always remain, you can't change those. Your calibration will come in on either slot 1 or 2, choose one or the other won't change any factory calibration.
      6. So that device is an i1Studio and it is a color spectrophotometer. For these type of devices, you will need to pre-calibrate the device, the software will walk you through this. You have an i1Display Pro which is a colorimeter, if you keep watching until the part where I calibrate the PC, you will see there no pre-calibration. Follow the prompt on PME.

      Flickering is not the bug, color shift in adobe product is the bug. Flicking I am not sure what is causing that on your end. If you use 16 BIT LUT as the icc profile type that might be the issue, recommend setting that to matrix.

      @@ArtIsRight Thank you. I am using Matrix and I think following your recommendations in the video. Is Adobe working on the color shift issue or do I have the wrong display for working with Adobe products ? Repeated calibrations using colorchecker display pro gave one PASS that was not saved and four FAILS that were saved. Continue to retry and have turned off all the automatic color adjustments I can find including ones in Accessibility on my iMac 27" 5K display. Thank you again.

      Color shift issues has been limited for more than a year now. As far as flicking that could be the result of the GPU in your iMac and not the display. When in doubt do A/B testing, test the display with another machine to see if the issue persists. Or it could be the cable but if it is Lightroom Specific then it is more likely the GPU.

    So if I do both photo and video, could I do 2 different calibrations like one gamma 2.2 panel native for photo and another gamma 2.4 and rec 709 roe Resolve? and then switch accordingly between the 2 (on a SW series monitor)?

      @@ArtIsRight Thank you so much, your channel is great. Many colourist use an I/O card such the Blackmagic UltraStudio 4k. How would it work in that case with the SW series?

      With USB you need to use the USB Uplink cable as well. Also if you don't have an SW line don't use Palette Master Element, but if you do, you are using the right app
