Bushman/Slyder Prescribed Fire: April 11, 2019

- On April 11, 2019 Gettysburg NMP conducted a successful prescribed fire on the southern portion of the battlefleld near the Bushman and Slyder farms. Gen. Hood's Confederate division marched through this area on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 and Gen. Farnsworth's Union cavalry brigade conducted an ill-fated attack against Gen. Law's division (after Gen. Hood's wounding) in this area on July 3, 1863.
Our overall objectives are to maintain the conditions of the battlefield as experienced by the soldiers who fought here; perpetuate the open space character of the landscape; maintain wildlife habitat; control exotic invasive species; reduce shrub and woody species components; and reduce fuels in wooded areas to reduce fire hazard.
Thanks to all of you for working so hard to care for this place so generations of Americans can appreciate it!

My grandfather Joseph W.Urner was the sculptor for the ALABAMA MONUMENT and I visit Gettysburg quite often and have witnessed and experienced some unexplainable happenings there ! On particular one was at his Alabama monument were I had ridden my Harley up there and got off briefly with it still running and was taking a few pics of it when outta the blue a young couple mid 20's in period attire/ hoop skirt and all saw me and walked behind the monument and after a few seconds it hit me that WHERE THE HELL DID THEY JUST GO ??? I looked behind the monument and it would've been impossible for the lady to even walk through the brush behind the monument let alone in a hoop skirt ! I was like WTF what did I just see and where did they just vanish too ?? Still cant figure that one out other than they were ghosts? They looked exactly like living PEOPLE walking but obviously they weren't!
Goes to show that not all fires are bad.
Prescribed fire for what?

Got it. Intros invasive species and control brush and shrubbery. Without farm animals to control brush and ticks plus seamy places making it impossible to use a brush hog this is the only way
